Our Trust increased Balint group provision, relocating virtually for psychiatry doctors to explore the emotional impact of clinical practice and doctor-patient relationships, during unfamiliar challenges of the pandemic. This unique context allowed comparison of multiple virtual and face-to-face (F2F) Balint-type group experiences for participants and facilitators.

In March 2020, existing core trainee (CT) year 1 and 2, higher trainee (ST) and consultant Balint groups became virtual, with new CT3 and Speciality Doctor and Associate Specialist (SAS) virtual Balint groups established.

All 57 participants and 5 facilitators were sent an anonymous electronic survey to retrospectively rate virtual Balint (March-August 2020) and their preceding F2F Balint group (suggesting September 2019-February 2020) experience.

The response rate was 89% for participants (51 respondents) and 100% for facilitators (5 respondents).

For group participants, 90% (virtual) and 78% (F2F) agreed or strongly agreed that Balint group provided an opportunity to explore challenging aspects of clinical work. 76% (virtual) and 71% (F2F) agreed or strongly agreed that it made them feel more supported. Almost 50% agreed or strongly agreed that virtual and F2F Balint group helped work feel less stressful. Both ratings and free-text feedback emphasised virtual Balint attendance being easier.

Facilitators rated virtual and F2F formats similarly highly with regards to exploring difficult doctor-patient interactions, richness of discussions and their enjoyment. Facilitators felt virtual attendance was easier but more draining, with more difficult adherence to Balint group etiquette and boundaries.

82% of participants and 75% of facilitators agreed or strongly agreed that virtual format made them more likely to attend future Balint groups. The rich pool of free-text comments received were predominantly positive, whilst noting challenges during virtual Balint in remaining present, with more distractions (for participants) and additional difficulty accessing group dynamics (for facilitators).

Participant and facilitator responses indicate Balint-type groups being professionally and clinically beneficial across different psychiatrist grades, and promoting clinician wellbeing when both F2F and virtual during pandemic-related restrictions. Facilitator ratings (unlike participants) suggested specific virtual process challenges such as feeling more drained, perhaps in part due to technical application issues around this emerging format.

Both participants and facilitators reported attendance being easier when virtual. Although some suggested returning to F2F post-COVID, more preferred to continue virtually or utilise a blended format. This was particularly for non-CT groups where geographical challenges (e.g. region-wide ST Balint) or competing clinical demands (e.g. consultant/SAS Balint) made regular commitment and attendance more difficult.

To evaluate the provision of services to patients with challenging behaviour in East Lothian Community Learning Disability population with and without specialist behaviour support team.

Behaviour that proves to be a challenge to manage (Challenging behaviour) is not uncommon in adults with intellectual disability and has a reported prevalence of 10–15%.1,2

Positive behaviour support (PBS) is recommended as evidence-based intervention for adults with intellectual disability who have challenging behaviour. East Lothian community learning disability team (CLDT) underwent a change in service model for people with challenging behaviour. This change followed a Health and Social care partnership agreement that behaviour support and management could be provided by multidisciplinary CLDT rather than region-wide specialist team.

Data collection was split into two cycles. First cycle looked retrospectively at six months prior to exit of Specialist Positive Behaviour Support Team (SPBST). Second cycle looked prospectively at 6 months after exit of SPBST.

In first cycle, data were collected doing retrospective review of cases known and referred to SPBST. This included calculating time spent on each individual case by SPBST and by CLDT. SPBST provided information in the form of hours spent on each individual case for patients identified by them. For CLDT, electronic medical records system (TRAK) was used by looking at appointment entries on TRAK. For second cycle, newly developed Complex Behaviour pathway was used to identify the patients. Data were collected by using TRAK system as in the first cycle for CLDT.

Data collected in both cycles was compared at the end of second cycle.

In first cycle, 5 patients were managed jointly by SPBST and CLDT in 96.4 hours over six months and average clinical time spent on each patient was 19 hours. SPBST spent a total of 59 hours and CLDT spent 40 clinical hours. In second cycle, 12 patients were managed by CLDT alone in 130 hours over six months and average clinical time spent on each patient was nearly 11 hours.

Results of this evaluation suggest that SPBST had been providing significant contribution to East Lothian CLDT not only with their expertise but also with clinical time. More than 50 % of total clinical time spent on the patients with challenging behaviour in first cycle, was provided by SPBST. This is also evidenced in second cycle where there is an increase in clinical time of some professions when SPBST was withdrawn.

COVID-19 has resurfaced health inequalities but also provides new opportunities for remote healthcare. Minority ethnic service users (SUs) are substantially under-represented in secondary mental health services due to gaps in understanding needs of this priority group. We aimed to assess and identify any differences in characteristics and acceptability, with a focus on minority ethnic mental health SUs.

A prospective, online feedback questionnaire was developed with the help of SUs. This was built into video consultations (VCs), using the secure Attend Anywhere platform through a survey link. We present results between July 2020 and January 2022, during which, a total of 2,565 SUs completed the online questionnaire after VCs. SPSS (version 27) was used for descriptive statistical analysis. Chi-squared test, using 5% level of significance, was conducted to test differences between the two (minority Vs majority ethnic) SU groups.

Of 2,565 SUs, 119 (4.6%) were from minority ethnic groups (Asian British, Mixed/multiple, Black British, and Other), 2,398 (93.5%) were White British, and 48 (1.9%) preferred not to disclose. A higher percentage of SUs were females from both minority (55.6%) and White British (66.1%) ethnic groups (ϰ2=5.476, p < 0.05). By age group, almost half (48.7%) of minority ethnic SUs were less than 25 years old, compared with those from White British ethnicity (29.2%). In contrast, only 2.5% minority ethnic SUs were aged ≥65 years with none ≥80 years old (ϰ2 Likelihood Ratio = 27.11, p < 0.001).

No significant differences were found for video technical quality, such as waiting area, joining the video call, sound, and video quality. Similar findings were observed for video care delivery aspects with no significant differences between (minority ethnic and White British) SUs. Overall, both groups felt comfortable during the video call (ϰ2=0.137, p > 0.05), their needs were met (ϰ2=0.384, p > 0.05) and felt supported (ϰ2=0.164, p > 0.05). However, according to care team, a significantly higher percentage of minority ethnic SUs (43%) had remotely consulted Specialist (Eating disorders, Well-being/IAPT) services compared with those of majority ethnicity (29%) (ϰ2 Likelihood Ratio = 21.936, p < 0.05).

Both minority ethnic and White British SUs found video care to be acceptable, with positive experiences. A significantly high proportion of minority ethnic SUs was younger and had remotely consulted Specialist services, with none in the 80-plus age group. These findings highlight priority areas to address among this massively underrepresented group in mental healthcare services.

To establish a multidisciplinary diagnostic autism assessment clinic in primary healthcare so as to reduce lengthening waiting lists for specialist hospital based services, to increase efficiencies and improve the patient journey and clinical outcome. Timely diagnosis and early access to community based early intervention services optimizes outcomes.

Waiting time for specialist hospital based services were increasing in number. Analysis of the data revealed that 42.9% of all referrals were autism related and 75.5% of these referrals were for autism assessments in under six-year-olds. Bottlenecks were found in the current system. In collaboration with primary healthcare colleagues, a new pathway was developed with paediatricians, social workers and primary healthcare physicians completing a comprehensive initial assessment including conducting a Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS). Each of the three hospital based child psychiatrists then ran a diagnostic autism clinic in the primary healthcare setting once a month (so three clinics in total) to review the initial assessment, meet the child and family/carers and then to confirm the diagnosis and write a medical report for community based services as appropriate. Follow-up care remained in primary healthcare unless there was diagnostic uncertainty, significant behavioural difficulties or comorbidities requiring medication. The project timeline started with one and gradually increased to four diagnostic assessments in each clinic, that is, twelve per month.

57 diagnostic assessments were completed in first eight month period. Waiting times for diagnostic assessments in under six-year-olds were reduced from two to four months to only one to two weeks. Medical reports were issued within five working days. Under six-year-olds and their parents no longer had to attend busy, less child friendly hospital settings but rather were able to attend a purpose build early intervention centre within the primary healthcare setting.

In conclusion, this is an example of a successful quality improvement project embracing the efficiencies of integrated models of care between primary, secondary and tertiary services. Critical success factors included strong leadership support, compelling rationale and purpose, clear clinical pathways and clear roles and responsibilities. It was presented as part of the hospital wide quality meetings in November 2021.

Many studies have found an association between mood-disorder-related traits and endometriosis and adenomyosis. However, the cause–effect relationship remains unclear.

We conducted Mendelian randomisation analyses to evaluate any causal relationship between mood disorders and endometriosis as well as different sites of endometriosis.

Summary-level statistics for mood-disorder-related traits and endometriosis (8288 cases, 68 969 controls) in European populations were derived from large-scale data-sets of genome-wide association studies. A two-sample Mendelian randomisation was performed using the inverse-variance weighted and weight median methods. Further sensitivity analyses, including heterogeneity, pleiotropy and leave-one-out analyses, were conducted to test the consistency of the results.

Genetically determined mood swings (odds ratio = 2.557, 95% CI: 1.192–5.483, P = 0.016) and major depression (odds ratio = 1.233, 95% CI: 1.019–1.493, P = 0.031) were causally associated with an increased risk of endometriosis. Mood swings (odds ratio = 4.238, 95% CI: 1.194–15.048, P = 0.025) and major depression (odds ratio = 1.512, 95% CI: 1.052–2.173, P = 0.025) were also causally associated with the risk of adenomyosis. Sensitivity analyses confirmed the reliability of the results.

Our results suggest that mood-disorder-related traits increase the risk of endometriosis and adenomyosis. This study provides new insights into the potential pathogenesis of endometriosis and adenomyosis, and highlights the importance of preventing endometriosis and adenomyosis in patients with mood-disorder-related traits.

A rise in loneliness among older adults since the COVID-19 outbreak, even after vaccination, has been highlighted. Loneliness has deleterious consequences, with specific effects on perceptions of the ageing process during the COVID-19 pandemic. Coping with stressful life events and the challenges of ageing may result in a perception of acceleration of this process.

Studies have shown a buffering effect of an internal locus of control in the relationship between COVID-19 stress and mental distress. The current study examined whether loneliness predicts subjective accelerated ageing and whether internal locus of control moderates this relationship.

Two waves of community-dwelling older adults (M = 70.44, s.d. = 5.95; age range 61–88 years), vaccinated three times, were sampled by a web-survey company. Participants completed the questionnaire after the beginning of the third vaccination campaign and reported again 4 months later on loneliness, internal locus of control and subjective accelerated ageing level in the second wave.

Participants with higher levels of loneliness presented 4 months later with higher subjective accelerated ageing. Participants with a low level of internal locus of control presented 4 months later with high subjective accelerated ageing, regardless of their loneliness level. Participants with a high level of internal locus of control and a low level of loneliness presented with the lowest subjective accelerated ageing 4 months later.

The findings emphasise the deleterious effects of loneliness and low internal locus of control on older adults’ perception of their ageing process. Practitioners should focus their interventions not only on loneliness but also on improving the sense of internal locus of control to improve subjective accelerated ageing.

Emotional and behavioural disturbances accompanying neurocognitive disorders may sometimes lead to a criminal offence. Our knowledge of this specific forensic subpopulation is lagging behind the knowledge on, and attention for, ‘classic’ psychiatric disorders in forensic populations.

To gain knowledge on the prevalence and characteristics of individuals with neurocognitive disorders in the forensic population.

This retrospective database study uses an anonymised data-set of the National Database of penitentiary psychiatric centres (PPC) (N = 8391), which collects data on all patients admitted to one of the four PPCs (mental health clinics within the prison system) in The Netherlands since May 2013. Inclusion criterion for this study was the presence of a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition, text revision (DSM-IV-TR) or Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5) diagnostic code belonging to the category of neurocognitive disorders.

A DSM-IV-TR or DSM-5 diagnostic code of a neurocognitive disorder was classified in 254 out of 8391 unique individuals, resulting in a prevalence of 3.0% in the total PPC population. The most prevalent diagnosis was unspecified neurocognitive disorder (59.1%). The neurocognitive disorder group significantly differed from a random control group from the database (n = 762) on demographic, clinical and criminological variables.

The prevalence of neurocognitive disorders in this real-world clinical sample is remarkably lower than in two earlier studies in similar populations. Also remarkable is the relatively high prevalence of an unspecified neurocognitive disorder. These findings lead us to hypothesise that neurocognitive disorders may be underdiagnosed in this population. Forensic psychiatric settings should evaluate whether they have sufficient expertise available in neuropsychological assessment.

Anxiety affects around one in five women during pregnancy and after birth. However, there is no systematic information on the proportion of women with perinatal anxiety disorders who want or receive treatment.

To examine (a) the prevalence of anxiety disorders during pregnancy and after birth in a population-based sample, and (b) the proportion of women with anxiety disorders who want treatment and receive treatment.

This study conducted 403 diagnostic interviews in early pregnancy (n = 102), mid-pregnancy (n = 99), late pregnancy (n = 102) or postpartum (n = 100). Participants also completed self-report measures of previous/current mental health problems and desire for treatment at every time point.

The prevalence of anxiety disorders over all time points combined was 19.9% (95% CI 16.1–24.1), with greatest prevalence in early pregnancy (25.5%, 95% CI 17.4–35.1). The most prevalent disorders were obsessive–compulsive disorder (8.2%, 95% CI 5.7–11.3) and generalised anxiety disorder (5.7%, 95% CI 3.7–8.4). The majority of women with anxiety disorders did not want professional help or treatment (79.8%). Most women with anxiety disorders who did want treatment (20.2%) were receiving treatment. The majority of participants with anxiety disorders had a history of mental health problems (64.6%).

Prevalence rates overall are consistent with previous research, lending validity to the findings. However, findings challenge the assumption that everyone with a psychological disorder wants treatment. These findings highlight the importance of relationship-based care, where individual needs and contextual barriers to treatment can be explored.

Autism spectrum disorders have recently encountered a change in how they are perceived, since what used to be a narrowly defined rare disorder of childhood is now recognized as a fairly common heterogeneous disorder, which may receive a first-diagnosis during adolescence and adulthood, yet, a common scenario within this age group is that either the diagnosis is missed or misdiagnosed with other psychiatric disorders. Nevertheless, relatively little has been published about the prevalence of autistic traits in adolescent and young adults, and specifically in those investigated for psychiatric conditions.In the present study, we explore the prevalence of autistic traits among 170 adolescents and young adults who were referred to the outpatient psychiatry clinic “Centro Giovani Ponti” in Milan, Italy between September 2021 and March 2022.

Socio-demographic information was collected and all participants completed the following questionnaires; (1) The Autism Quotient (AQ), (2) The Ritvo Autism Asperger Diagnostic Scale-Revised (RAADS-R), (3) The Sensory Perception Quotient (SPQ) and (4) The Empathy Quotient (EQ).

Out of 170 participants, a striking 103 (60.6%) of the subjects scored above the cut-off in RAADS-R, and 31 (18.2%) of the subjects scored above the cut-off in AQ. Furthermore, 99 (58.2%) participants were in the medium range and 47 (27.6%) were in the low empathy category according to EQ results. A significant sensory sensitivity was measured with an SPQ total score of 55.25 (SD = 17.76). Finally, gender difference was of significance in the RAADS-R, EQ and SPQ, but not in the AQ. In the RAADS-R, non-binary subjects (128.60) scored higher than females (78.68). Whereas, in the SPQ female (57.39) participants scored higher than non-binary subjects (40.30). Furthermore, females scored significantly higher compared to males in the EQ total score with values of 42.56 and 35.89, respectively.

To conclude, we report that a significant proportion of adolescents and young adults seeking psychiatric care have unrecognized autistic traits and that an impact of gender is observed. This so called ‘lost generation’ is attributed to be created by the complex phenotypic presentations, changes in diagnostic criteria and associated diagnostic difficulties. It is of utmost importance to clarify the prevalence of autistic traits within this age range and to increase awareness among clinicians, since establishing the true diagnosis, which is commonly complicated by the high rates of psychiatric comorbidity or overlapping mental health symptoms, will reduce the burden on patients, their families, clinicians, and the society.

To assess whether direct access to a 45 minute screen appointment in a Consultant Psychiatric clinic, based in General Practice, affects; the number of contacts patients have with secondary care pre and post being seen; whether the General Practitioner (GP) would have referred to secondary services if the clinic had not been in operation; the GPs’ views on how helpful the clinic was in understanding the patients’ problems and managing the problems outside of secondary care.

A Consultant Psychiatrist in Leeds offered bespoke 45 minute screening appointment clinics in three sister GP practices, accepting direct referrals from GPs without requiring referrals to the local Community Mental Health Team (CMHT). This model was created to reduce the number of patients moving repeatedly between GP and secondary mental health services as this was leading to patient dissatisfaction and increased GP and CMHT workloads.

We compared the number of mental health contacts (per month), for each of the 57 patients who had been referred to the clinic, in the months pre and post being seen in the clinic. We also asked the involved GPs to complete a brief survey for each patient who had been referred to determine whether, they would otherwise have been referred to the CMHT and whether the clinic has helped with their understanding and management of the patients’ problems.

The mean number of contacts with secondary services before being seen in clinic was 3.30 per month compared to 0.44 after being seen. The mean difference of 2.86 is statistically significant on a paired-test with a P Value of 0.0149 (95% confidence intervals of 0.58 to 5.13). We received 22 survey responses from GPs of patients referred to the clinic including for patients who did not attend. All 22 responses indicated that the patient would have been referred to the CMHT if the clinic had not been available. 95% were rated as being very helpful or moderately helpful in understanding the patient's problems. 91% were rated as very helpful or moderately helpful in managing the patients’ problems outside secondary care.

Our evaluation has demonstrated that a model of direct access for GPs to a Consultant Psychiatric clinic can reduce referrals and patient contacts with secondary mental health services. GPs have found this model helpful in understanding patients’ problems and managing the problems outside of secondary care.

This poster aims to examine the impact of social cognitive deficits on psychosocial functioning in depressed patients, as well as summarise the utility of various evidence-based therapeutic interventions employed to target these deficits. The stated hypotheses were twofold: (1) that social cognitive impairment in major depressive disorder will correlate with poorer psychosocial functioning; and (2) that these deficits will respond to existing anti-depressant therapies.

Social cognition is an important adaptive trait that incorporates the identification, perception and interpretation of socially relevant information from the external world. It is frequently affected in major depressive disorder such that depressed patien

A review of the existing literature was performed in order to test the stated hypotheses. Pertinent sources were identified via the MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar databases. A total of 107 studies met inclusion criteria for review.

Impaired social cognitive performance in depressed patients correlated with poorer psychosocial functioning across the key domains of general cognitive functioning and quality of life. Many current anti-depressant therapies were found to have a normalising effect on the social cognitive abilities of depressed subjects, both at a neural and functional level. Anti-depressant medications, in particular citalopram and reboxetine, appeared to correct facial affect recognition deficits, while a psychotherapeutic approach demonstrated improvements in theory of mind and negative interpretive bias. Data relating to other common treatments, such as electroconvulsive therapy, are limited.

The impact and treatment of social cognitive deficits in major depressive disorder is an important emerging field. The social cognitive deficits evident in depressed patients are sometimes subtle, but afford a significant functional impact. Additionally, it appears these impairments are at least partially reversible using anti-depressants or psychotherapy.

Transference-focused psychotherapy (TFP) is a manualized evidence-based treatment for severe personality disorders (PDs) based on a psychodynamic approach that focuses on object relations theory. It has been used as a teaching tool in different psychiatric settings. Psychiatry trainees are often the “first-responders” in multiple services, and they have to deal with patients with PDs in various settings. Yet there is a documented gap in psychiatry trainees’ education regarding the assessment and management of patients with PD pathology. The aim of our study was to evaluate whether a series of teaching sessions on TFP theory and techniques as applied to PD could improve the attitude and technical confidence of psychiatric trainees in the clinical encounter of a patient with a PD.

Two cohorts of psychiatry trainees in Tower Hamlet's East London Foundation Trust received four teaching sessions, each of one hour duration, on TFP theory and techniques. All the sessions were delivered online, using video teleconferencing software. 14 Trainees completed 2 questionnaires, pre- and post-teaching: the Attitude to Personality Disorder Questionnaire (APDQ) and the Clinical Confidence with Personality Disorder Questionnaire (CCPDQ). The APDQ asks the responder to score from 1–6 the frequency they experience certain feelings towards patients with PD. In the absence of a suitable instrument, we developed the CCPDQ consisting of a set of 13 questions rated on a 6-point Likert scale addressing key issues identified in TFP including establishing and maintaining the treatment frame and in implementing the 4 main techniques. We also conducted a 1-hour focus group post teaching which was videorecorded, transcribed, and analysed thematically.

On quantitative analysis, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test indicated statistically significant improvements in the total APDQ score (P = 0.003, r = 0.81) and in the CCPDQ questionnaires (P = 0.001, r = 0.88).

The thematic analysis showed an overall positive effect of the TFP teaching on trainees’ attitude and confidence: they felt it improved their understanding of the nature of personality disorder, their awareness and management of countertransference, awareness of object relations and relation dyads at play in the encounter.

Training junior doctors about TFP theory and techniques as applied to PD can significantly improve their attitude towards these patients and their technical confidence in the clinical encounter. Of note, our workshop is resource light and can easily be delivered by remote teaching. Based on these findings, teaching of TFP in the core psychiatric training curriculum should be considered.

This study aimed to evaluate the patterns of antipsychotic prescribing in patients with first episode psychosis (FEP) at the time of their initial treatment and over the first year with the Early Intervention Service (EIS). It was hypothesised that different care teams would have a preference for certain antipsychotic medications and that initial medication choice would be continued through the first year.

Research indicates that with the exception of clozapine, all antipsychotics are equally as effective. However, anecdotally it has been observed that inpatient and crisis teams and EIS have differing initial medication choices.

An analysis of the North West Sussex EIS caseload (n = 67) was conducted. The first antipsychotic prescribed and initiating team was recorded. Prescribed medication for those that had completed 12 months (n = 43) with EIS after initial prescription was recorded. An analysis was performed of prescribing choice by initial care team (acute vs EIS vs other community services) with the frequency with which medication was changed during treatment.

97% (n = 65) of patients were started on an antipsychotic. Initial medication choice was olanzapine (44.8%, n = 30), aripiprazole (22.4%, n = 15), risperidone (20.9%, n = 14), quetiapine (6%, n = 4) and zuclopenthixol were least common (1.5%, n = 2). At the 12 month point 51.2% (n = 22 of 43) had switched and 16.3% (n = 7 of 43) had discontinued.

The most common medication started by acute services was olanzapine (56.0%, n = 28 of 50), though of those who completed 12 months this had been switched in 53% of cases (n = 9 of 17). EIS most commonly initiated aripiprazole or risperidone (37.5% each n = 4). At 6 and 12 month follow-up by EIS, the most commonly prescribed antipsychotic was aripiprazole (24 patients 40.7%, and 14 patients 32.6% respectively).

There was a clear preference for olanzapine as initial treatment of First Episode of Psychosis in the region. On breakdown it was apparent that there was a split in prescribing choices between more sedating medication in acute services and less sedating medication in EIS. Given that most patients changed to less sedating and less metabolic active medications over their first year it is not clear why alternative options are not used at the start of treatment. Future research will focus on clinician's rationale for initial prescribing choice. This will look for any underlying bias toward specific medications.

The dearth of emotional intelligence leads to medical students’ inability to handle the pressures of medical education, sub-sequently causing burnout and mental illnesses. Poor emotional intelligence in young doctors also begets increased mistrust from the public, lowering the quality of healthcare delivery. Emotional intelligence of Pakistani students, similar to global context, is impacted by a myriad of psycho-socio-economic factors. It is pertinent to find out the detrimental and/or protective factors, and design interventions to enhance emotional intelligence as a soft skill. With this aim in mind, we explored the relationship of emotional intelligence with adverse childhood experiences and prevalent mental illnesses (depression and anxiety) amongst the medical students of one of the most populous cities of Pakistan; Lahore.

A cross-sectional study was conducted including currently enrolled MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery) students from first year to final year in 2 medical schools of Lahore. An online google form was constructed by combining Modified Adverse Childhood Experiences Score Scale (ACES), Brief Emotional Intelligence Scale (BEIS-10) and Hospital Depression and Anxiety Scale (HADS). Data were exported to SPSS version 25.0 for descriptive and analytical analysis. Pearson's chi-square analysis and logistic regression analysis were used to study the association between the outcome and dependent variables; Odd's ratio (OR) with 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) were calculated.

Participants (N = 324) belonging to two different medical colleges in Lahore, namely King Edward Medical College (public) and Shalamar Medical and Dental College (private), took part in the study.

Pearson's chi-square showed significant association of emotional intelligence with early private schooling (p = 0.029), nuclear family system (0.044) and the presence of symptoms of depression (0.005). The adjusted logistic regression model showed that people who studied in a private sector school (OR: 2.12, CI: 1.01–4.45) and people who lived in a nuclear family (OR: 2.02, CI: 1.00–4.08) had significantly twice the likelihood of having high emotional intelligence. Also noteworthy is that respondents who were depressed according to HADS showed significantly lower emotional intelligence (OR: 0.37, CI: 0.16–0.86)

Emotional intelligence is now being recognized as an important life skill for healthcare providers. Emotional intelligence of medical undergraduates is influenced by a number of factors such as early schooling, family's living situation, current mental health and adverse childhood experiences. More prospective researches should be conducted to evaluate these relationships. Carefully crafted interventions for improving emotional intelligence for medical students must be implied at an early level to achieve better outcomes from medical education.

Cognitive impairments are well-established features of psychotic disorders and are present when individuals are at ultra-high risk for psychosis. However, few interventions target cognitive functioning in this population.

To investigate whether omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (n−3 PUFA) supplementation improves cognitive functioning among individuals at ultra-high risk for psychosis.

Data (N = 225) from an international, multi-site, randomised controlled trial (NEURAPRO) were analysed. Participants were given omega-3 supplementation (eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid) or placebo over 6 months. Cognitive functioning was assessed with the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia (BACS). Mixed two-way analyses of variance were computed to compare the change in cognitive performance between omega-3 supplementation and placebo over 6 months. An additional biomarker analysis explored whether change in erythrocyte n−3 PUFA levels predicted change in cognitive performance.

The placebo group showed a modest greater improvement over time than the omega-3 supplementation group for motor speed (ηp2 = 0.09) and BACS composite score (ηp2 = 0.21). After repeating the analyses without individuals who transitioned, motor speed was no longer significant (ηp2 = 0.02), but the composite score remained significant (ηp2 = 0.02). Change in erythrocyte n-3 PUFA levels did not predict change in cognitive performance over 6 months.

We found no evidence to support the use of omega-3 supplementation to improve cognitive functioning in ultra-high risk individuals. The biomarker analysis suggests that this finding is unlikely to be attributed to poor adherence or consumption of non-trial n−3 PUFAs.

The aim of this study is to assess the level of alexithymia, coping strategies and stress contribution to illness in patients with psoriasis and atopic dermatitis in order to increase effectiveness of dermatological treatment.

59 patients with atopic dermatitis, 67 with psoriasis and 65 healthy control group individuals were included in the cross-sectional study. Predominant complains of the patients: itching, widespread rashes and rashes on the open areas of the skin. In 85% patients with skin pathology onset of the disease and relapses were associated with stress, in 15% other factors.

“The 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale” was used to assess alexithymia. “The Ways of Coping Checklist, Lazarus” was used to assess coping-strategies. “The Holmes and Rage Stress Inventory” was used to assess stress contribution to illness. Significance level: p < 0,05.

The levels of alexithymia (p = 0.002), difficulty identifying feelings subscale (p = 0.02) and externally-oriented thinking subscale (p = 0.002) in patients with skin pathology (especially in those with psoriasis) were higher than in the control group.

Patients with skin pathology turned out to be more susceptible to stress factors (p = 0.025) and less often use coping strategy “seeking social support” (p = 0.037).

Patients with skin pathology with high levels of alexithymia and difficulty identifying feelings subscale more likely to use maladaptive “escape-avoidance” coping (p = 0.001).

Patients with atopic dermatitis who find difficult to describe feelings are more likely to use maladaptive coping “distancing”(p = 0.002).

In patients with psoriasis high levels of alexithymia and externally-oriented thinking subscale scores are associated with less common use of the adaptive coping “problem solving”(p = 0.001). Moreover, in patients with psoriasis high levels of difficulty identifying feelings subscale are associated with more common use of maladaptive “escape-avoidance” coping (p = 0.001).

The results of the study confirm the need to include psychological assessment and psychotherapy in the treatment plan for patients with psoriasis and atopic dermatitis in order to improve emotional awareness and to develop more adaptive coping-strategies in patients.

The objectives/aims of the Audit include:

1. 1. To standardize and implement ICP for service users attending DNCC CAMHS team in accordance with the established policy.

2. 2. To achieve greater involvement of service users/parents in ICP.

3. 3. To standardize and improve treatment of care involving all members of one team.

Every patient should have a care plan. Each care plan has a set of needs and goals. These are agreed between the service user and key worker and are assessed and measured frequently. Consultation with each service user/parents, as far as practicable is important. Specification of treatment and care required in accordance with best practice should be recorded. Identification of the necessary resources should be recorded and discussed with service user and key worker. Records kept in one composite set of documentation, and a signed copy should be made available to the service user/parents.

First Cycle commenced 15th October 2019. 166 files were selected from CAMHS team. Data were collected from clinical records from time of admission into CAMHS service to the time of audit. The audit report was prepared on the 6th December 2019, and intervention discussed at the multidisciplinary team meeting and wider DNCC CAMHS academic meeting. Second Cycle 23rd March 2020. 30 files randomly selected and audited. Data were collected by Dr Uchechukwu Egbuta, Mr Cillian Howley, Dr Anitha Selvarajoo, under supervision of Dr Muhammad Iqbal and Dr Diana Meskauskaite.

Method of data input/analysis is IBM SPSS.

For each ICP, the following were looked at: Files with ICP, Identifiable key worker, Formulation, Goals, Action plan, Copy of ICP to young person/parents, Next Review Date, Projected discharge date.

Overall compliance shows 62% in first cycle, and 68% in second cycle after intervention.

There was a 6% quality improvement of ICPs in terms of overall compliance in applying the various components of ICP.

Each service user should have an individual care plan. Each individual care plan should be measured regularly. To develop a therapeutic individual care plan, a formulation of the case from history taking is essential looking at the bio-psychosocial model and should be service user focused. Care plans are part of clinical governance, therefore continuous re-audit every three months was recommended. The follow-up audit will be carried out by the multidisciplinary team members.

A significant rise in mental health disorders was expected during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, referrals to mental health services dropped for several months before rising to pre-pandemic levels.

To identify trajectories of incidence and risk factors for common mental disorders among the general population during 14 months of the COVID-19 pandemic, to inform potential mental health service needs.

A cohort of 33 703 adults in England in the University College London COVID-19 Social Study provided data from March 2020 to May 2021. Growth mixture modelling was used to identify trajectories based on the probability of participants reporting symptoms of depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9) or anxiety (Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7) in the clinical range, for each month. Sociodemographic and personality-related characteristics associated with each trajectory class were explored.

Five trajectory classes were identified for depression and anxiety. Participants in the largest class (62%) were very unlikely to report clinically significant symptom levels. Other trajectories represented participants with a high likelihood of clinically significant symptoms throughout, early clinically significant symptoms that reduced over time, clinically significant symptoms that emerged as the pandemic unfolded and a moderate likelihood of clinically significant symptoms throughout. Females, younger adults, carers, those with existing mental health diagnoses, those that socialised frequently pre-pandemic and those with higher neuroticism scores were more likely to experience depression or anxiety.

Nearly 40% of participants followed trajectories indicating risk of clinically significant symptoms of depression or anxiety. The identified risk factors could inform public health interventions to target individuals at risk in future health emergencies.

Young people's mental health and well-being is an important concern in the UK. Provision of education and support to schools has been highlighted as an area for improvement; however, evidence-based programmes are scarce and costly.

To provide an acceptable education programme to improve pupils' confidence and knowledge of mental health and well-being. It covered the mental and emotional well-being outcomes set by the Scottish Government in their schools' curriculum.

Lessons were designed by A.P. and delivered by volunteer doctors and medical students, and supervised by a psychiatrist. Outcomes were measured using questionnaires before and after lessons with optional comments.

PsychEd was piloted in 2016 in six schools to pupils between the ages of 11 and 18. There was a statistically significant improvement in pupil confidence and knowledge after the lessons (P < 0.001). Of the pupils 84% felt that having lessons on mental health was useful. Qualitative feedback was also collected and coded into positive, constructive and negative comments. In total, 72% of pupil comments were positive.

PsychEd showed promising results. Future areas of development include reaching a greater number of local authority schools, longer training for volunteers and provision of teaching materials to teachers for their own use.
