The effect of increasing non-protein energy level in a 40% protein diet on the voluntary feed intake (VFI) was investigated in juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Fish were fed to satiety using two different methods, hand feeding or time restricted self-feeding. Regardless of the feeding methods, the VFI ind the feed: gain ratio was always significantly higher for the fish fed the low energy diet than for those fed the high energy diet. In addition, no effect of the diet on the specific growth rate could be detected. It is concluded that fish were able to regulate with a great accuracy their feed intake when fed either by hand or by self-feeders. This regulation was precise enough to satisfy their energy needs and led fish fed the two different experimental diets to reach identical growth performance, regardless of the feeding technique.

To evaluate the population structure of Ucides cordatus in the Caeté estuary, crabs were sampled bimonthly over 13 months in three Rhizophora mangle forest stands that differed in their accessibility and fishing history. Additionally, sex- and size composition of the commercial catch and catch per unit of effort (CPUE – the number of crabs captured per fisherman per day) were monitored between 1997 and 2003. Average and maximum crab sizes (carapace width, CW) from all three sampling sites combined were 6.1 cm and 8.8 cm in males, respectively, and 5.5 and 7.3 cm in females. Crabs were largest at the site that had been reportedly less exploited in the past. The overall sex ratio was skewed towards males (53−62%). Egg carrying females were only encountered during the rainy season. Mean crab abundance and biomass was 1.7 specimens m−2 and 142 g m−2 fresh mass. Only large males were commercially harvested (98% ≥ 6.5 cm CW). Their biomass was 53 g m−2 and the Caeté estuary yields an annual production of 1200 t of these large specimens. This is approximately the quantity that is currently being harvested. CPUE was similar in 1997 and 1998, then decreased by 15% until 2000 and stabilized for the rest of the study period. Mean capture size (cm CW) ranged between 7.2 ± 0.5 and 7.5 ± 0.2 and was above the size of 50% (and even 100%) male maturity and the legal minimum capture size. There is no evidence that the Caeté crab population is overfished, despite over 30 years of de facto open access exploitation. Apparently, the selectivity of fishermen and consumers for large male crabs as well as the local artisanal capture techniques are key factors in preventing an overfishing of the Caeté crab population until today. Our results suggest that the economic and social sustainability of this fishery will be affected well before the biological one, which should be considered in the recently proposed coastal co-management plan for the region.

French mollusc production is based mainly on the Pacific cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas. Since 1991, annual mass mortality of juveniles has been reported during summer months. These recurring episodes concern professionals who fear that like Portugese oyster, C. angulata, C. gigas could in turn disappear following one of these epizooties. Previously, bacteriological analysis of moribund oyster juveniles yielded an isolate of a Vibrio splendidus biovar II strain, named TNEMF6. This isolate was demonstrated to be pathogenic to Crassostrea gigas spat by experimental challenge. To study the association between summer oyster mortality and presence of TNEMF6 cluster strains, Vibrionaceae fauna were isolated from infected spat along the French Atlantic coast between 1997-1998. Strains related to V. splendidus biovar II were selected. Comparison with TNEMF6 was performed by classical biochemical tests and polymerase chain reaction – restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) of SSU rDNA, rpoD, and gyrB genes. Genomic similarities were confirmed by DNA/DNA hybridization. Only one strain out of 14, TNNIII7, was found to be closely related to the pathogenic bacteria. Neither the phenotypic nor the genotypic markers used in this study were able to distinguish pathogenic from non-pathogenic strains of the widespread V. splendidus. However, future genetic comparisons of TNEMF6 and TNNIII7 is likely to reveal genes involved in pathogenicity.

Inshore marine areas host key habitats for the biological cycle of many marine populations, but are subject to strong anthropogenic pressure. Uses of inshore areas are multiple and often give rise to conflicting interests. In this context, marine protected areas (MPAs) and artificial reefs (ARs) are increasingly regarded as interesting management measures, in that they contribute to ecosystem conservation, fisheries sustainability, and because they can be helpful in zoning coastal areas in order to reduce conflicts between users. Beyond these expected benefits, it is important to appraise whether MPAs and ARs meet managers' objectives. This review focuses on the interaction between ecological sciences and management in the purpose of establishing or monitoring MPAs and ARs. We first study how objectives have to be formalized through management plans, and which kinds of information need to be collected in this respect. We then report management objectives related to MPAs and ARs, and list corresponding observed effects. Finally, we discuss the present role of monitoring and scientific research in the management process and propose a few perspectives for scientific research.

Sturgeon production in Western Europe originating from aquaculture in 1999 was approximately 1300 t revealing an increasing trend. Three species represent 95 % of the annual production: white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) 43 %, Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii) 34 %, and Adriatic sturgeon (Acipenser naccarii) 18 %. The remainder is provided by various species including hybrids. The main countries in decreasing order of production are Italy, France, Spain, Germany and Poland. Fish are fed commercial formulated diet. The most significant changes in the sturgeon industry during recent years have been in the ownership of farms, in the emergence of the pond as a production system, and in the increasing caviar production from farmed sturgeon. In 1999, the production of farmed caviar from France and Italy, originating from Siberian and white sturgeon, respectively was close to 6 t. The number of active sturgeon farms in Western Europe is estimated to be approximately thirty, half of which are hatcheries. This paper presents different strategies and management approaches in sturgeon production and caviar processing. The potential caviar market and its dynamics are assessed and likely changes are discussed. Finally, some of the scientific investigations needed to improve and support this development are highlighted. Five different fields are distinguished: biological reserve, genetics, reproduction, farming, and quality of end products.

Experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of five extenders (sucrose, glucose, fructose, KCl and a saline carp sperm extender) and two cryoprotectants (dimethyl-sulfoxide (DMSO) and methanol) on the cryopreservation of common carp sperm. Freezing of sperm using glucose extender and methanol as cryoprotectant resulted in the highest post-thaw motility, fertilization as well as hatching rates (63 ± 9%, 74 ± 15% and 67 ± 17% vs. 87 ± 5%, 84 ± 14% and 69 ± 14% using fresh sperm, respectively). In general, sugar-based extenders combined with methanol as cryoprotectant yielded higher motility, fertilization and hatching rates than ionic extenders in combination with DMSO. The jelly-like agglutination observed after thawing in samples frozen with sugar-based extenders did not reduce fertilization and hatching rates. Frozen–thawed sperm samples were able to successfully fertilize 10 g (8000) eggs.

Preliminary studies of freshly collected halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) sperm by light microscopy indicated that sperm motility, i.e. the percentage of motile sperm and the duration of fonvard progressive movement, was optimized under conditions of osmotic pressure ranging between 400 and 1100 mOsmol/kg and pH for 6.5-8.5. The quality of sperm, stored in vitro on ice, deteriorated rapidly within a few hours, a charactenstic particularly evident in sperm after freezing and thawing tests. Studies of several cryoprotectants indicated that halibut sperm could be successfully preserved frozen when diluted with 3 parts extender (sucrose: 150 mM, CaCl2: 1.7 mM, MgSO4: 7 mM, glycine: 86 mM and Tris: 30 mM at pH: 8), 10% of 1-2 propanediol and one part sperm (3:l). Additional studies of the motility of seawater-activated halibut sperm were conducted by dark field microscopy under stroboscopic illumination. These observations indicated that fast forward-moving sperm motility, which lasts 60-70 s, is correlated with propagating waves on the full length of the sperm flagellum with an initial beat frequency of 45-50 Hz which abruptly drops to about 10 Hz after 60-80 s. The beat frequency is blocked by KCN (5mM) and NaN3, (1.2mM), on intact sperm. The flagellum beat frequency of demembranated/reactivated sperm is dependent on the ATP concentration in the reactivation solution.

High energy extruded diets were formulated to contain the same level of protein supplied either by soy protein concentrate (SPC) or fish meal. Three experiments were performed in order to measure voluntary feed intake and feed waste, faecal losses and soluble losses of nitrogen and phosphorus in rainbow trout (average body weight: 100 g). Voluntary feed intake and growth performance of fish fed with demand feeders were not different when diets contained 0, 50 or 75 % SPC instead of fish meal. Total replacement of fish meal by SPC led to a significant decrease in feed intake and resulted in poor growth. This was partly due to methionine deficiency in the SPC based diet. With the addition of crystalline DL-methionine in the diets, an improvement of feed intake and growth performance was apparent. Protein digestibility was high, regardless of the protein source. Excretion of ammonia and urea increased with the level of SPC in the diet. Nitrogen losses decreased when methionine was added to the diet containing only SPC as a protein source. Availability of phosphorus increased with the level of SPC in the diets. Daily soluble losses were not affected by the dietary treatments but the pattern of phosphorus excretion after feed intake was modified. The rise in soluble phosphorus in water occurred later when fish were fed diets with soy protein whatever the dietary level of soy protein concentrate.

Development of a broodstock of Arctic charr was undertaken in experimental tanks supplied with water pumped from Lake Léman (Geneva) at a depth of 36 metres. Spawners were subjected todifferent thermal regimes to determine the effects of temperature on spawning time and gameteviability. In the tanks, the ovulation occurred spontaneously at the same time as the wild fish in the lake. The timing of ovulation was slowed down at 8 °C and above. At 11 °C, ovulation was inhibited. When the water temperature of the rearing tanks was higher than 5 °C for several weeks prior to spawning, the quality of eggs produced by reared females was poorer than those of wild fish because the process of overripening was very rapid above 5 °C. Provided that spawners were reared at 5 °C and examined twice a week to detect ovulation, 80 to 90 percent survival to the eyed stage could be expected for eggs of reared females. The fertilization rate of eggs produced by spawners transferred from 8 to 5 °C in December was high (78%). When the transfer occurred in January, the viability of ova tended to decrease (63%).

The farming of freshwater crayfish (astaciculture) is mainly carried out in the southern states of the USA, and in Australia and Europe. Production levels vary with climate but are in the region of 40 000 to 60 000 tonnes per annum. In addition, at least an equivalent amounts is harvested from the wild, particularly in North America, China, Australia, Kenya, Turkey and Europe. Crayfish farming is usually either of an extensive (ranching) or semi-intensive nature, intensive methods being infrequent, except for the rearing of juveniles for stocking (or restocking of natural waters depleted of crayfish). As crayfish do not have larvae and are polytrophic, they are relatively easy to rear, although fecundity is much lower when compared with other cultured crustaceans. At least 85% of world production is based on the red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, mainly from Louisiana and other southern USA states, but also from China, Kenya and Spain, where it has been introduced. In Australia, three species are of aquacultural importance, the yabbie, Cherax destructor; the marron, C. tenuimanus; and the red claw, C. quadricarinatus. Some very large production units have been built but none have lived up to their promise. The red claw is thought to have considerable aquacultural potential, but, being a tropical species, needs warm water for good growth. In Europe, the only endemic species cultured to any extent is the noble crayfish, Astacus astacus, mainly as juveniles for restocking. It fetches a higher price than other crayfish. The North American signal crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus, has been introduced to most European countries, but farmed production is relatively low. About 98% of crayfish consumed in Europe come from extensive systems or the wild harvest. European crayfish markets were upset by the collapse of the Turkish crayfishery (based on Astacus leptoductylus) due to overfishing and disease in the mid-1980s. The environmental impact of crayfish farming is most noticeable in Europe. Crayfish plague, introduced from North America last century, has devastated populations of the native species in many countries. Its spread has been exasperated by the translocation of foreign crayfish (and probably by fish) for aquacultural purposes. In addition, introduced crayfish frequently escape into the wild and form large populations, often in direct competition with native species. Burrowing and prolific species, such as P. clarkii, can also do considerable environmental damage.

Bycatch of several groups of species and their characteristics are presented for the period 2003 to 2007 for the European purse seine tuna fishery operating in the Atlantic Ocean. Data were collected through French and Spanish observer programmes and represented a total of 27 trips corresponding to 2.9% coverage. Bycatch is defined as non-targeted species and small or damaged target species. Bycatch species composition, main species length, sex ratio and the fate of the most common species are presented first. Stratified ratios relative to landings of major commercial tunas were then used to estimate the total bycatch; these ratios were considered the most appropriate variable for extrapolation. Stratification was based on the fishing mode (free school vs. floating object), season (quarters) and spatial areas. The annual average bycatch was estimated at about 6400 t, corresponding to a mean annual value of 80.8 t per 1000 t of tuna landed or 7.5% of the total catch. Tunas represent 83% (67.2 t/1000 t) of the total bycatch, followed by other bony fishes (10%, 7.8 t/1000 t), billfishes (5%, 4.0 t/1000 t), sharks (1%, 0.9 t/1000 t) and rays (1%, 0.9 t/1000 t). Based on estimates of the annual bycatch, 16% was kept on board and sold in local markets.

Although fish have been kept for more than three centuries as ornamentals, and the development of manufactured feed since 50 years ago has contributed to the tremendous growth of this hobby, nutrition of ornamental fish is based on extrapolation of results derived from food fishes under intensive farming conditions. Some research on nutrient (protein, minerals) requirements of growing freshwater ornamental species (live-bearers) in a production environment has been conducted, mainly in Singapore, with emphasis on the provision of live feed during the early stages of the life cycle. Protein requirements varied from around 30% dietary protein for growing omnivorous goldfish (Carassius auratus) to 50% for the carnivorous discus (Symphysodon aequifasciata). Whereas mineral (phosphorus, iron, magnesium, zinc) requirements have received some attention in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata), few researches have concentrated on vitamin requirements of ornamental species. Requirements for fatty acids have been conducted mainly on marine ornamentals (damselfish, seahorses), and accentuated the need for dietary supplementation of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids. Fish kept in public and home aquaria presents the problem of diversity of species in the same enclosure, each with its own specific requirements and needs. Maintenance energy levels of ornamental fish varied from 0.068 kJ per day for small neon tetras (Paracheirodon innesi) to 0.51 kJ per day for moonlight gouramis (Trichogaster microlepsis) kept at a water temperature of 26 °C. Research on nutrient requirements of ornamental fish urges for suitable measurements other than only growth rate in order to determine optimal dietary inclusion levels.

Sungo Bay (China) has a mean depth of 10 m, a total area of 140 km2 and is occupied by several types of aquaculture, whilst opening to the ocean. The production of scallops (Chlamys farreri) cultured on long lines is estimated to exceed 50 000 tonnes (total weight) per year. Selection of sites for scallop growth and determination of suitable rearing densities have become important issues. In this study, we focused on the local scale (e.g. 1000 m) where rearing density, food concentration and hydrodynamics interact. We have developed a depletion model coupling a detailed model of C. farreri feeding and growth and a one-dimensional horizontal transport equation. The model was applied to assess the effect of some environmental parameters (e.g. food availability, temperature, hydrodynamism) and spatial variability on growth, and to assess the effect of density according to a wide range of hydrodynamical and environmental conditions. In the simulations, food concentrations always enabled a substantial weight increase with a final weight above 1.5 g dry weight. Compared to a reference situation without depletion, a density of 50 ind m–3 decreased growth between 0% and 100%, depending on current velocity when maximum current velocity was below 20 cm s–1. The mean ratio between food available inside and outside the cultivated area (depletion factor) varied with the percentage of variation in scallop growth that was due to density. Our model suggests that scallop growth was correlated with maximum current velocity for a given density and current velocity below 20 cm s–1. The model was integrated within a Geographical Information System (GIS) to assist in making decisions related to appropriate scallop densities suitable for aquaculture at different locations throughout the bay. Concepts (depletion), methods (coupling hydrodynamics and growth models), and the underlying framework (GIS) are all generic, and can be applied to different sites and ecosystems where local interactions must be taken into account.

A total of 212 carnivorous coastal fish species from New Caledonia, represented by 7335 individuals, were analysed for their diet. Fifty two prey items were identified and later grouped into broader taxonomic categories refered as “prey types”. For each fish species 6 biological traits were defined: maximum adult size, major biotope, schooling behaviour, home range, nycthemeral behaviour, degree of crypticity. A general linear model was fit to the diet data taking into account these traits, and depth of capture and fish family. This model was applied to the average number of prey types/stomach and to the volume of 5 prey types: nekton, crustaceans, molluscs, echinoderms, worms. A second analysis was performed on the effect of observed size on diet composition, taking into account these traits and taxonomy. This analysis was restricted to species with at least five individuals, representing 113 species from 33 families. More detailed information is given for the three major families, Serranidae, Lutjanidae and Lethrinidae and intra-family variations are illustrated for Lethrinidae. All the factors tested had significant effects on diet, fish size and taxonomy being the two major factors. The five prey types analysed in detail displayed marked differences according to the factors studied. In particular nekton increased in importance with fish size, whereas crustaceans decreased and molluscs presented a dome shaped relationship. Nekton and crustaceans made the bulk of the diet of most species, with molluscs being at times important. Echinoderms and worms were never a major food item and were eaten only by a restricted range of species.

Among mollusc pathogens, paramyxeans are an important group of protistan parasites belonging to the genera Marteilia and Marteilioides. Marteilia refringens and M. sydneyi are of particular concern given their potential impact on mollusc aquaculture world-wide. Aber disease and QX disease are currently listed by the OIE, the World Organisation for Animal Health. After more than thirty years of existence in the scientific literature, these organisms still pose questions and research challenges to investigators. This paper reviews current knowledge of the group and key references. The review was focused on taxonomy, epidemiology, pathology and potential control methods for these organisms in order to enhance understanding of paramyxean infection issues in mollusc aquaculture.

This paper presents some features of turbot sperm and compares them with data reported in the literature on other freshwater and marine fish. In captivity, turbot spermiation period lasts 6 months. When compared to other fish species, turbot males are characterized by low values of maximum gonadosomatic index (0.6-0.8%) and are poor sperm producers in terms of volume (0.2-2.2 ml), concentration (0.7-11.0 × 109 spermatozoa/ml) and total sperm number released per stripping (0.2-12.0 × 109 spematozoa). Compared to most freshwater species, the duration of cell movement is long (1-17 min). The spermatozoon of turbot can be considered to be of a primitive type. A very high protein content (8.8 mg/ml) is found in the seminal fluid of turbot. Increasing collection frequency of turbot males, from monthly to fortnightly and weekly stripping, results in the release of successive samples presenting decreasing semen volume and spermatozoa concentration. Similar spermatozoa concentration and total volume of semen produced per turbot, during a 2 month experimental period, are released from males submitted to an annual light and temperature cycle, compared to those receiving a 6 month contracted light and temperature schedule.

The chronic effects of exposing sea bass (average initial weight 100 g) to ammonia in water at 22 °C were first evaluated over a 61-day period (period 1, P1) during which nine different groups were submitted to nine ambient ammonia levels ranging from 0.014 to 0.493 mg l–1 NH3-N (0.53–16.11 mg l–1 total ammonia nitrogen (TA-N)) and fed using self-feeders. At the end of P1, the fish were starved for 10 days (P2). Their recovery capacity was tested over 43 days (P3) after which the exogenous ammonia supply was stopped in all treatments and the fish were allowed to feed. After 20 days of exposure a highly significant effect of ammonia was evident from the decrease in feeding activity, voluntary feed intake (VFI) and specific growth rate (SGR), and the increase in the feed conversion ratio (FCR). Ammonia exposure had no effect on circadian feeding rhythm or hourly actuation profiles. At the end of P1, the fish seemed to have adapted to all ambient ammonia concentrations tested since feeding and growth parameters were independent of ammonia levels. But they were unable to compensate for growth losses. Physiological adjustments were observed: plasma TA-N concentrations were positively related to ambient TA-N while there was no major disturbance in plasma urea. Plasma tri-iodo-thyronine concentrations were affected by ambient ammonia concentrations and there were no significant changes in hydromineral balance. During P2, oxygen consumption and urea excretion did appear to have been affected by ambient ammonia. When the exogenous supply of ammonia was stopped (P3), fish exhibited hyperphagia and compensatory growth. In fish previously exposed to the highest ammonia levels, SGR and VFI were highest, and their FCR was improved. At the end of the experiment the final average weights were similar in all of the treatments (range 337–396 g). Depending on the concentrations used, ammonia exposure may enhance subsequent fish appetite and growth rate and have a similar effect on growth performances as restricting feeding level. Within the range tested, no detrimental effect of ammonia on the metabolic capacity of the fish, measured by oxygen consumption and urea excretion, or on their physiological status was recorded, and the fish had a good recovery capacity. In the conditions of the experiment, the non-observable effect concentration (NOEC) was 6 mg l–1.

This paper presents the spatial indicators used in the European project FISBOAT. These are statistics intended to capture spatial patterns of fish populations, using fish density data collected during scientific surveys. To handle diffuse population limits, indicators are designed not to depend on arbitrary delineation of the domain. They characterize the location (centre of gravity and spatial patches), occupation of space (inertia, isotropy, positive area, spreading area and equivalent area) and microstructure. Collocation between different populations is summarized by a global index of collocation. These spatial indicators have the potential to be used in a monitoring system to detect changes in spatial distribution. They could be helpful for relating the spatial distribution properties of fish stocks to their dynamics, their habitats, or to climate change.

The common carp is one of the main aquaculture species in the world. Despite this, most of the production is carried out using unselected strains. Selective breeding for fast growth has not proven to be effective in this species, but other traits (disease resistance, shape) could be successfully selected for. Most heritability estimates in the literature are unreliable due to environmental biases, but complementary results from population genetics and comparison of strains seem to indicate that there should be a potential for selective breeding in this species, including selection for growth rate, provided the base populations are variable enough (e.g. synthetic strains). New techniques such as parentage assignment with microsatellites and use of doubled haploid progenies may help describe much more accurately, without environmental bias, the genetic determination of traits of interest in the carp. This could be a new opportunity to design efficient breeding programs in this important species.

Each summer the presence of large concentrations of bait fish in the area of the central Azores Islands gives rise to mixed-species feeding aggregations usually at dawn and dusk. The encircling of prey initiated by common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), often mixed with spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis), results in the formation of a compact ‘ball’ of several thousands prey fish close to the surface. Other dolphins, in particular the bottlenose (Tursiops truncatus), also eat the prey fish, whose high concentration makes them easy to capture. Large tunas (Thunnus thynnus, Thunnus albacares) sometimes participate in the phenomenon. Seabirds (mainly cory’s sheawaters, Calonectris diomedea borealis) are always present throughout the few minutes during which the entire collective food hunt takes place. A model of the phenomenon, based on 15 observations, is proposed. It comprises 4 stages: a preparation phase, an intensification phase, a mature phase, and a dispersion phase. These observations allow a better understanding of the tuna-dolphin aggregation process. They show that it is the tunas that generate and beneficiate from the aggregation with dolphins, rather than the contrary.
