For the class of continuous games where σi and fi {σi, φ(σ1, …, σN)} are the strategy of and payoff to player i for i = 1, …, N, it is proved that the set of weak type I optima defined in Paper I conicide with the set of solution of a matrix condition. The latter condition restricts the equilibrium solutions of an adjustment process. Numerical results for N = 2 and N = 3 indicate that the set of all equilibrium solutions coincides with the above sets. The optima of types I to IV from Paper I are described fairly completely for the given class of games.

A boundary-value problem for cell growth leads to an eigenvalue problem. In this paper some properties of the eigenfunctions are studied. The first eigenfunction is a probability density function and is of importance in the cell growth model. We sharpen an earlier uniqueness result and show that the distribution is unimodal. We then show that the higher eigenfunctions have nested zeros. We show that the eigenfunctions are not mutually orthogonal, but that there are certain orthogonality relations that effectively partition the set of eigenfunctions into two sets.

When faced with the task of solving hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs), high order, strong stability-preserving (SSP) time integration methods are often needed to ensure preservation of the nonlinear strong stability properties of spatial discretizations. Among such methods, SSP second derivative time-stepping schemes have been recently introduced and used for evolving hyperbolic PDEs. In previous works, coupling of forward Euler and a second derivative formulation led to sufficient conditions for a second derivative general linear method (SGLM), which preserve the strong stability properties of spatial discretizations. However, for such methods, the types of spatial discretizations that can be used are limited. In this paper, we use a formulation based on forward Euler and Taylor series conditions to extend the SSP SGLM framework. We investigate the construction of SSP second derivative diagonally implicit multistage integration methods (SDIMSIMs) as a subclass of SGLMs with order $p=r=s$ and stage order $q=p,p-1$ up to order eight, where r is the number of external stages and s is the number of internal stages of the method. Proposed methods are examined on some one-dimensional linear and nonlinear systems to verify their theoretical order, and show potential of these schemes in preserving some nonlinear stability properties such as positivity and total variation.

We consider a two-step Sal’nikov reaction scheme occurring within a compressible viscous gas. The first step of the reaction may be either endothermic or exothermic, while the second step is strictly exothermic. Energy may also be lost from the system due to Newtonian cooling. An asymptotic solution for temperature perturbations of small amplitude is presented using the methods of strained coordinates and multiple scales, and a travelling wave solution with a sech-squared profile is derived. The method of lines is then used to approximate the full system with a set of ordinary differential equations, which are integrated numerically to track accurately the evolution of the reaction front. This numerical method is used to verify the asymptotic solution and investigate behaviours under different conditions. Using this method, temperature waves progressing as pulsatile fronts are detected at appropriate parameter values.

In this short paper, it is shown that the geodesic deviation equation admits a “constant of the motion” and so can be solved exactly. We also derive an expression for the energy E of relative motion between two freely falling test particles. We can infer that, in general, E will not be a linear superposition of kinetic and potential energies.

Under suitable hypotheses on the function f, the two constrained minimization problems:

are well known each to be dual to the other. This symmetric duality result is now extended to a class of nonsmooth problems, assuming some convexity hypotheses. The first problem is generalized to:

in which T and S are convex cones, S* is the dual cone of S, and ∂y denotes the subdifferential with respect to y. The usual method of proof uses second derivatives, which are no longer available. Therefore a different method is used, where a nonsmooth problem is approximated by a sequence of smooth problems. This duality result confirms a conjecture by Chandra, which had previously been proved only in special cases.

We study the structure of solutions of an initial value problem arising in the study of steadily rotating spiral waves in the kinematic theory of excitable media. In particular, we prove that under certain conditions there is a unique global positive monotone increasing solution.

In this paper, we consider a class of systems governed by second order linear parabolic delay-partial differential equations with first boundary conditions. Our main results are reported in Theorems 3.1 and 3.2. As in [9, Theorems 4.1 and 4.2], the coefficients and forcing terms of the system considered in Theorem 3.1 are linear in the control variables. On the other hand, the forcing terms of the system considered in Theorem 3.2 are allowed to be nonlinear in the control variables at the expense of dropping the control variables in the cost integrand.

We derive a nonlinear Schrödinger equation for the propagation of the three-dimensional broader bandwidth gravity-capillary waves including the effect of depth-uniform current. In this derivation, the restriction of narrow bandwidth constraint is extended, so that this equation will be more appropriate for application to a realistic sea wave spectrum. From this equation, an instability condition is obtained and then instability regions in the perturbed wavenumber space for a uniform wave train are drawn, which are in good agreement with the exact numerical results. As it turns out, the corrections to the stability properties that occur at the fourth-order term arise from an interaction between the mean flow and the frequency-dispersion term. Since the frequency-dispersion term, in the absence of depth-uniform current, for pure capillary waves is of opposite sign for pure gravity waves, so too are the corrections to the instability properties.

A delayed predator-prey system with Holling type III functional response is investigated. It is proved that the system is uniformly persistent under some appropriate conditions. By means of suitable Lyapunov functionals, sufficient conditions are derived for the local and global asymptotic stability of a positive equilibrium of the system. Numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the feasibility of our main results.

We present an application of optimal control theory to a simple SIR disease model of avian influenza transmission dynamics in birds. Basic properties of the model, including the epidemic threshold, are obtained. Optimal control theory is adopted to minimize the density of infected birds subject to an appropriate system of ordinary differential equations. We conclude that an optimally controlled seasonal vaccination strategy saves more birds than when there is a low uniform vaccination rate as in resource-limited places.

A new method of field quantization, in which the number operator has the form a*a, is proposed. Representations of this method are considered, particularly in reference to what conditions unique-vacuum state representations are required to satisfy.

This paper establishes an estimate for the asymptotic behaviour of the spectrum of a direct strain feedback (DSF) control system. The results show that the system operator corresponding to the closed loop system cannot have an analytic extension and that the decay rate for the system energy is not proportional to the feedback constant.

This paper deals with a class of network optimization problems in which the flow is a function of time rather than static as in the classical network flow problem, and storage is permitted at the nodes. A solution method involving discretization will be presented as an application of the ASG algorithm. We furnish a proof that the discretized solution converges to the exact continuous solution. We also apply the method to a water distribution network where we minimize the cost of pumping water to meet supply and demand, subject to both linear and nonlinear constraints.

In this paper we shall describe a numerical method for the solution of curve flow problems in which the normal velocity of the curve depends locally on the position, normal and curvature of the curve. The method involves approximating the curve by a number of line elements (segments) which are only allowed to move in a direction normal to the element. Hence the normal of each line element remains constant throughout the evolution. In regions of high curvature elements naturally tend to accumulate. The method easily deals with the formation of cusps as found in flame propagation problems and is computationally comparable to a naive marker particle method. As a test of the method we present a number of numerical experiments related to mean curvature flow and flows associated with flame propagation and bushfires.

Using Melnikov's method, the existence of chaotic behaviour in the sense of Smale in a particular time-periodically perturbed planar autonomous system of ordinary differential equations is established. Examples of planar autonomous differential systems with homoclinic orbits are provided, and an application to the dynamics of a one-dimensional anharmonic oscillator is given.

Both Evans et al. and Li et al. have presented preconditioned methods for linear systems to improve the convergence rates of AOR-type iterative schemes. In this paper, we present a new preconditioner. Some comparison theorems on preconditioned iterative methods for solving L-matrix linear systems are presented. Comparison results and a numerical example show that convergence of the preconditioned Gauss-Seidel method is faster than that of the preconditioned AOR iterative method.

In this paper we consider an infinite horizon, continuous time model of economic growth. We prove two theorems; one on the existence of optimal paths of capital accumulation and the other on the dependence of the set of optimal paths on the initial capital stock (sensitivity analysis). In the existence result the underlying technology set is nonconvex and only its “investment’ slices are convex. The proof is direct, without any use of necessary conditions. In the sensitivity analysis, the technology set is convex and so we have that the value function is concave. Then having that, we show that the set of optimal paths is an upper semicaontinuous multifunction of the initial capital stock.

A mathematical model is developed for the process of gas exchange in lung capillaries, taking into account the transport mechanisms of molecular diffusion and the facilitated diffusion of the species due to haemoglobin. We have assumed here equilibrium conditions which enable us to neglect advection effects. The nth order one-step kinetics of oxygen uptake by haemoglobin, proposed by Sharan and Singh [8], have been incorporated. The solution of this coupled nonlinear facilitated diffusion-reaction problem together with the physiologically-relevant boundary conditions is obtained in the closed form.

It is found that about 97.15% of total haemoglobin has combined with oxygen and 2.85% free pigment is left, which is present as carbaminohaemoglobin, met haemoglobin, carboxy haemoglobin etc. It is also shown that the percentage of free haemoglobin at a given PO2 and PCO2 is independent of total haemoglobin content present in the blood.

The well-known Hill's empirical relation is deduced from our solution. The results obtained from our model, based on physical formulation, are in good agreement with the documented data [6] and those computed from the Kelman [3] empirical relation.

In a paper published in 1949, E. R. Love [10] found an integral relation between a separated solution (in oblate spheroidal coordinates) to a particular mixed boundary-value problem and a solution to the same problem using an integral representation. This note examines further representations of the same type which occur in some simple two and three-dimensional potential problems.
