The Jesus Chapel was located beneath the New Work at the east end of St Paul's Cathedral, and was remembered by that name long after the parish of St Faith had taken control of the space following the dissolution of the Fraternity of the Holy Name, the previous occupants of the Jesus Chapel. Although the chapel disappeared along with the rest of the medieval building following the cataclysm of 1666, archaeological investigations, pre-Fire illustrations and, most importantly, documentary evidence from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries provide invaluable evidence for the appearance of the chapel. This paper utilizes a range of evidence to suggest how the Jesus Chapel may have appeared on the eve of the Reformation; particular attention will be paid to the furnishings and fittings of the building, and to the use (and occasional abuse) of this remarkable place of worship.

Scattered up and down England in museums, churches, and private collections, are a number of small sculptured tablets or panels of alabaster, of which the principal feature is a head lying on a dish or charger, generally flanked by figures of saints and sometimes with other accessories.

These tablets have been more or less a puzzle to antiquaries for a long time, and various conjectures have been put forward as to the meaning of the subjects represented.

The date of the Romanesque fabric of the abbey church of Lessay (Manche, France) has been much debated by architectural historians. Was the eastern arm of the church completed by the time of the burial of Eudes de Capel in the choir on 3 August 1098? Or do features such as the high rib vault and scalloped capitals preclude a date in the late eleventh century? This paper argues that the choir was completed by 1098, and that the master mason of Lessay was acquainted with architectural developments in north-east England in the 1080s and early 1090s, especially those at York Minster, St Mary's Abbey, York, and allied churches.

In the following pages will be found the result of a somewhat careful examination of all the existing ancient sites in the district of Furness, in North Lancashire. The remains themselves are very varied in character, ranging from the rude enclosure of dry-built masonry to the burh of the Anglo-Saxon lord. The accompanying illustrations represent all the most important examples of these; and, as far as I am aware, every site (excepting some groups of cairns, which on parts of the fells are innumerable) will be found described with some detail in the text.

I send you an account of the opening of some Tumuli, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, under my directions, in the autumn of the present Year, and will thank you to lay the same before the Society of Antiquaries at some early meeting. I am happy in this opportunity of adding to the information which the Society has already acquired on the subject of the primaeval remains of our native land;

It is by this time axiomatic that regional studies of pottery types, wares, and fabrics can greatly expand our knowledge of the pottery industry in Roman Britain. Some of the most penetrating studies which have contributed to the subject of Romano-British coarse pottery in recent years have concerned themselves with the peculiar types and wares of individual regions, or with the geographical spread of distinctive products as mirrored in the pattern of their distribution. This outline study of two large and varied classes of common coarse wares, current in the east Midlands towards the end of the Roman period, is designed primarily to provide (a) a brief discussion of a very distinctive burnished grey ware, and (b) to record some results of further work on the remarkable north-east Midland jar types, best known in the forms of Derbyshire and Dales Ware. With the exception of these two, the major late Roman wares of the area have not been systematically studied. Taken with the recent studies on those two wares, it is intended that these notes will form a convenient introduction to the late Roman pottery industry in this region.

In 1876, while the York railway station and goods yard were being planned anew by the North Eastern Railway (now the London and North Eastern Railway), a carved stone was found on the ‘hill near the New Goods Station’, a site of which the exact position, now obscured by still more extensive railway development, is discussed below (see p. 7). The stone was presented by the Directors of the North Eastern Railway to the Yorkshire Philosophical Society, which already owed much to their public spirit; and it was in due course described, in the Society's catalogue, as ‘a fragment of pillar, 2 ft. 8 in. high, ornamented with human heads and basketwork, over which a man is climbing’. In the Society's Annual Report for 1876 it had, however, won no particular description and was doubtless regarded as among ‘the one or two sculptured stones’ blandly recorded as having ‘added to the completeness of the collection of Roman antiquities’.
