A fossil hydrothermal system on Barton Peninsula, King George Island, Antarctica, formed a series of lead-zinc- and pyrite + native sulphur-bearing epithermal quartz ± calcite veins, filling fault-related fractures in hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks of Eocene age. The lead-zinc veins occur within argillic hydrothermal alteration zones, whereas the pyrite + native sulphur veins are found within advanced argillic alteration zones. Fluid inclusion data indicate that the vein formation occurred at temperatures between about 125° and 370°C (sphalerite deposition formed at 123–211°C) from fluids with salinities of 0.5–4.6 wt.% eq. NaCl. Equilibrium thermodynamic interpretation of mineral assemblages indicates that the deposition of native sulphur in the upper and central portions of the hydrothermal system was a result of the mixing of condensates of ascending magmatic gases and meteoric water giving rise to fluids which had lower pH (<3.5) and higher fugacities of oxygen and sulphur than the lead-zinc-depositing fluids at depth. The δ34S values of sulphide minerals from the lead-zinc veins (δ34S = −4.6 to 0.7‰) are much higher than the values of pyrite and native sulphur from the pyrite + native sulphur veins (δ34S = −12.9 to −20.1‰). This indicates that the fluids depositing native sulphur had higher sulphate/H2S ratios under higher fo2 conditions. Sulphur isotope compositions indicate an igneous source of sulphur with a δ34SΣS value near 0‰, probably the Noel Hill Granodiorite. Measured and calculated δ18O and δD values of the epithermal fluids (δ18Owater = −6.0 to 2.7‰, δDwater = −87 to −75‰) indicate that local meteoric water played an important role for formation of lead-zinc and native sulphur-bearing quartz veins.

The study of polychaetes from the Marion Dufresne expedition to the Îles Crozet in 1982 provided 45 species from depths ranging from 50–1055 m. The most abundant was Eunice pennata, found at all depths and in all types of substratum in about 66% of the samples. This species with Laetmonice producta, Harmothoe spinosa and Lanice marionensis made up over 50% of all polychaete specimens. A homogenous polychaete assemblage dominated by the above mentioned group of species was encountered in the shallower stations (100–300 m). A mosaic-like and less abundant polychaete fauna with some characteristic, abundant species: Amage sculpta, Laetmonice wyvillei, Leanira quatrefagesi and Melinna cristata was encountered in the deeper stations (300–1055 m). Clear similarities between the polychaete fauna of Îles Crozet and soft-sediment polychaete assemblages of Marion and Prince Edward Islands were noticed. No such affinity was encountered with the polychaete fauna of Îles Kerguelen. Their position in relation to the Polar Front as well as possible differences in bottom deposits (calcareous versus siliceous) may in part explain these dissimilarities. The biogeographical status of Kerguelen Islands is also discussed.

Amphipod crustaceans constituted 30% of the food biomass from the stomachs of Antarctic tern (Sterna vittata) captured at King George Island in three consecutive seasons. Five species of lysianassoid amphipods occurred in the material: Abyssorchomene plebs, Cheirimedon femoratus, Hippomedon kergueleni, Waldeckia obesa and Orchomenella rotundifrons. All these amphipods are known as necrophages inhabiting the upper and middle sublittoral of western Antarctic. They are commonly caught in masses in baited traps, but never occur in the littoral zone or in tidal pools. It is suggested that the source of the amphipod diet of S. vittata are seal or penguin carcasses and dead fish brought by waves to the tidal zone, serving as a bait for necrophagous amphipod crustaceans when submerged in water before stranding on the beach.

The circulation and water masses of Port Foster, Deception Island, were studied using conductivity-temperature-depth stations inside and outside the semi-enclosed bay and an array of bottom temperature sensors moored around the perimeter of the bay over two weeks in the summer of 2012. Inside Port Foster, the water column is divided into two layers separated by a temperature-forced, seasonal pycnocline at ~40–60 m. The circulation of the upper layer is in an anticlockwise direction, with mean geostrophic currents of ~0.04–0.10 ms-1. The lower layer, from ~60 m to the seabed, shows coastal-trapped waves travelling in a clockwise direction, possibly triggered by local wind gusts. Local sea ice melt in areas surrounding the underwater hot springs of Pendulum Cove appears as a fresh, warm anomaly down to 30 m.

We present a high-resolution spatial study of ocean surface carbon dioxide partial pressure (pCO2), temperature and salinity coupled with a seismic survey performed in subpolar waters with a variable presence of glaciers along the coastal margins of Admiralty Bay and the Bransfield Strait, northern Antarctic Peninsula, during the late spring season. Three zones were identified in this bay. The shallow and relatively fresh SHALLOW GLACIER THAW zone in the inner portion of the bay had high freshwater inputs from active glacial meltwater channels, representing higher pCO2 levels (median ~438 μatm) than the shallow and relatively salty SHALLOW zone without glaciers along the margins and dominated by macroalgae communities at the bottom, which showed relatively low pCO2 levels (median ~371 μatm). The deep and relatively salty CENTRE zone was highly influenced by seawater intrusions from the Bransfield Strait, representing intermediate pCO2 levels (median ~397 μatm). The net sea-air CO2 fluxes in late spring obtained from the high-resolution surface survey in Admiralty Bay indicate a condition of near neutral air-sea CO2 flux, with a median (25–75% interquartile range) value of -0.07 mmol m-2 day-1 (ranging from -12.21 to +4.33 mmol m-2 day-1), contrasting with the slight source to the atmosphere estimated from measurements only in the CENTRE zone. This finding suggests that temperature-sensitive metabolic and physical-chemical processes may cause significant variability in the ocean surface distribution of CO2 over short shoreline distances in the northern Antarctic Peninsula.

Population growth of the southern giant petrel Macronectes giganteus from South America has been linked with an increase in fishing activities. It was demonstrated recently that a population from Elephant Island, Antarctic Peninsula, largely overlaps its non-breeding distribution with zones of high fishing intensity off South America. This study investigated the assumption that the increase in this population since the 1980s is related to an increase in fisheries off South America. Our results show that the population size is proportional to the increase in demersal and squid fisheries. These fisheries produce a considerable amount of discards, which can be used by non-breeding southern giant petrels as a food source during unfavourable conditions in winter. This may enhance the adult survival rates with potential carry-over effects on population size. Our study shows that we need to further understand the effects of fishery discards/offal on scavenging seabirds of the Southern Ocean, and highlights the importance of understanding the carry-over effects of seabird–fisheries interactions during the non-breeding phase in population dynamics.

Vertical displacements of emerged land caused by oceanic tidal loading are of the order of several tens of millimetres in polar regions. They constitute a long wavelength signal, the amplitude of which is comparable to elevation changes that might be associated with climate-driven changes in ice-sheet volume. Using bilinear interpolation on a 1° by 1° global grid, we examine the amplitudes and phases of vertical displacements caused at any given epoch by the eight most important ocean tide constituents of recent ocean tide models, extrapolated to high latitudes. This permits estimation of the oceanic tidal loading corrections to measurements made by a satellite altimeter along the satellite ground track. We have done so systematically over Antarctica, for a scenario flight of ICESAT, which carries the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS), whose primary science goal is to monitor ice-sheet mass balance. Ocean loading tide corrections near the coast of Antarctica can reach several centimetres; overall they average about 10 min.

This study estimates energy and mass balance at the edge of the Antarctic ice sheet close to a non-glaciated area. An automatic weather station was installed on the ice sheet, near an ice free area of Schirmacher Oasis in Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica. Hourly snow-meteorological parameters were recorded and observed during the summer of the year 2007–08. Hourly radiative and turbulent energy fluxes were estimated at the ice surface. An ultrasonic sensor was used to measure accumulation or ablation at the glacier surface. Ground Penetrating Radar was also used to measure the changes in ice thickness at the observation point. The net radiative flux was the main heat source and the latent heat flux was the main heat sink for the ice sheet with seasonal average values of 98 W m-2 and -86.7 W m-2 respectively. There was a high ablation rate for the ice sheet near the non-glaciated area with a seasonal mean of 0.0172 m w.e. per day. Over the period 10 November 2007–7 February 2008 the mass balance was -1.53 m w.e. Good correlation (r2 = 0.97) was observed between estimated and observed hourly ablation of the glacier. Sublimation and melt processes contributed 16.5% and 83.5% respectively to the net summer ablation.

New petrographic and geochemical insights from inoceramid bivalve shells of lower Campanian (Marambio Group, James Ross Basin, Antarctica) show that they suffered significant palaeoenvironmental stress just before their disappearance in the southern high latitudes. Inoceramid data have mainly been derived from shell fragments of the large form Antarcticeramus rabotensis Crame & Luther, collected at stratigraphical levels marking the early disappearance of inoceramids in the James Ross Basin (10 m.y. before the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary in Antarctica). Cathodoluminescence studies and minor and trace element intra-shell variations in A. rabotensis shells, along with their whole shell geochemistry (major, minor, and trace elements, including REE), have revealed evidence of only weak diagenesis but significant palaeoenvironmental stress. The most relevant evidence of such adverse palaeoenvironmental conditions in A. rabotensis shells is reflected by marked growth interruptions in the normal shell layering, including the occurrence of a previously undetected inner aragonitic nacreous layer formed of alternating aragonitic and calcitic sublayers. The weak diagenesis produced characteristic geochemical intra-shell variations, which have subsequently been detected in the inoceramid shell microstructure, especially in the inner aragonitic nacreous layer.

We measured the hydrogen and oxygen isotope composition (δ2H and δ18O) of precipitation and stream water from the Soft Plume River at multiple spatiotemporal scales on sub-Antarctic Marion Island, Indian sector of the Southern Ocean. Monthly precipitation δ2H and δ18O values ranged from -43.7‰ to -14.7‰ and from -7.0‰ to -3.3‰ (n=13), respectively. Stream water values ranged from -48.0‰ to -25.4‰ for δ2H and from -7.6‰ to -4.0‰ for δ18O (n=92). The monthly precipitation data yielded a local meteoric water line with the equation δ2H=8.4δ18O+11.4. There was no clear seasonality in isotope composition present in precipitation and stream water. Along the stream, no significant difference was observed between sites. However, δ2H and δ18O values were lower and more variable at the highest site. This is probably the result of the ‘amount effect’, where more precipitation fell at a higher elevation compared with a downstream site in the catchment. The findings illustrate spatiotemporal patterns in precipitation and stream water isotopes and provide insight into mechanisms affecting their composition on sub-Antarctic Marion Island.

The necessity for uniform reference systems for conventional maps (analogue) and geographic information systems (digital) is discussed. It is recommended that the following scales and projections are used for Antarctic maps: general maps at scales smaller than 1:1 000 000 should use a stereographic projection. Maps up to a scale of 1:1 000 000 should be compiled according to the specifications of the International Map of the World (IMW) 1:1 000 000. Ellipsoids are used as reference surfaces for the various map projections. Differences of the ellipsoidal parameters of the WGS72 and WGS84 systems have to be considered if accuracies better than 10 m are required. Geographic information systems may store data in vector or raster format and in geographic or in geodetic coordinates. For a raster format which is referred to the geographic (spheroidal) grid the term of ‘geographic raster’ is introduced, in contrast to the ‘geodetic raster’ which is referred to a plane cartesian coordinate system. The Institut für Angewandte Geodäsie (IfAG) is establishing the ‘Geocoded Information System Antarctica’ (GIA) using digital satellite image recordings. Internal storage of data in the GIA is in the form of the geodetic raster (and not by spheroidal coordinates). For the scale range 1:250 000 to 1:1 000 000 the size of the raster element is 60 m × 60 m. For smaller scales, satellite image data of a raster width of 240 m × 240 m are preferred.

The land-fast ice and the platelet ice layer off Adélie Land are inhabited by a dense and diversified diatom community. Along with Bacillariophyceae, Archaeomonadaceae sensu Deflandre are present and relatively abundant. These modern siliceous nanostructures are similar to the nanofossils described by geologists in marine sediments from upper Cretaceous to Pliocene, Pleistocene and recently in Holocene and modern sediments, and are probably related to chrysophyte cysts. The two most abundant taxa were Achaeomonas cf areolata Deflandre and Litheusphaerella cf spectabilis Deflandre. The other taxa were not common. Despite the taxonomic uncertainty of immature forms, the diversity of archaeomonads was high. Three new species of Archaeomonas are described. The morphology of A. cf areolata is highly variable, showing a possible diversification over geologic time. Litheusphaerella cf spectabilis also shows some differences between fossil and modern specimens. Recent studies confirm that archaeomonads are extant in diverse marine water bodies and recent sediments. There is growing evidence that these siliceous structures represent possible reliable proxies of sea ice extent, even if their presence in geologic time is not always linked exclusively to sea ice. Further studies are needed to elucidate the exact origin of these cysts and their real taxonomic affinities.

The design of a computer-controlled climatic simulation cabinet used for mechanical weathering studies on Antarctic rocks is described. It is argued that if the results of simulations are to be applicable to field situations they should be firmly based on field environmental conditions. Some weathering results from a laboratory simulation based upon microclimatic data collected from the maritime Antarctic are presented and it is shown that they could not have been obtained from field measurements alone. Further simulation studies are required for the Antarctic and it is argued that the nature of Antarctic research is such that it is particularly conducive to this type of approach.

A dynamic-thermodynamic sea ice model is used and coupled with an atmospheric general circulation model to simulate the seasonal cycle of the global sea ice distribution. We have run the coupled system and obtain a creditable seasonal simulation of the Antarctic sea ice. To understand the role of ice advection on the seasonal cycle of Antarctic sea ice in the coupled system, results from the thermodynamiconly (T) sea ice model have been compared with those from the dynamic thermodynamic (DT) sea ice model. The seasonal cycle of sea ice differs between the two models. When ice motion is eliminated sea ice becomes more compact and thinner, and sea ice is more extensive in summer. A number of previous studies have examined the effect of ice dynamics on sea ice simulations with prescribed atmospheric conditions. Here experiments have been performed with a fully coupled atmosphere sea ice system and also using prescribed daily atmospheric forcing and monthly mean atmospheric forcing, to examine the differences of the sensitivity of the ice advection between the coupled and forcing models. Similar differences have been observed between DT and T in the forcing models but the magnitude is smaller than in the fully coupled model, and with monthly mean atmospheric forcing the difference is least. These differences highlight the importance of the inclusion of ice advection when undertaking studies using a fully interactive atmosphere sea ice model, or using prescribed daily/monthly atmospheric conditions to force a sea ice model for the Antarctic.

The Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG) in 1982, 1986, and 1996, operated a Proton Precession Magnetometer (PPM) at its Antarctic stations Dakshin Gangotri/Maitri (located at ∼70°S, ∼12°E). Comparison of the average quiet-time value of total intensity F for these years with values of F obtained at the same geographic location (interpolated from iso-intensity contours of F on World Magnetic Charts and IGRF Maps) for earlier years, suggested that over the last 75 years at this location, F has dropped from ∼49 000 nT in 1922, to ∼40 000 nT in 1996 i.e. ∼120 nT per year. Further inspection at nearby Antarctic stations reveals a drop of ∼108 nT yr−1 at Novolazarevskaya, ∼100 nT yr−1, at Georg Forster and ∼95 nT yr−1 at Syowa; Mawson situated still further away shows a drop of ∼72 nT yr−1, while Dumont d'Urville located very near the magnetic pole showed a drop of ∼50 nT yr−1 until 1994. A study of the observed F values over the past five decades at 23 observatories from the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions indicates that contours of yearly decrease in F follow a definite pattern, with maximum decrease lying in a belt encompassing Maitri. These observations are of importance in the light of modelling works at the Earth's Core–Mantle boundary pointing to two prominent regions of reverse magnetic flux (RMF) occurring beneath South America, South Africa and a large part of Antarctica, and which may merge sometime to cause reversal of the present geomagnetic field polarity. The importance of continuous monitoring of F at various locations in Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions is brought out in this work. It is equally important to understand the cause behind this rapid decrease in F.

The East Antarctic Craton contains only one substantial outcrop of Palaeozoic–Mesozoic strata between 0° and 150°E; this lies in Mac. Robertson Land, on the eastern margin of the northern Prince Charles Mountains. These rocks are known as the Amery Group (Mond 1972, McKelvey & Stephenson 1990) and comprise dominantly fluviatile sandstones, with subordinate shales, coals and conglomerates. The lower formations of the Amery Group, the Radok Conglomerate and Bainmedart Coal Measures, contain a diverse Stage 5 palynomorph assemblage indicating a Baigendzhinian–Tatarian age (late Early–Late Permian, hereafter abbreviated as mid–Late Permian; Dibner 1978).

Pingüinera Stream is one of the two main lotic environments of Cierva Point (Antarctic Specially Protected Area No. 134) on the Danco Coast, Antarctic Peninsula. It originates in a large snowfield, flows through a penguin rookery, moss and grass banks, discharging into Cierva Cove. During late Antarctic summer 2003, we sampled the stream at six locations along its course. Abiotic features characterize it as a clear water system, yet receiving a very high amount of PO4-P and NH4-N from the rookery. These nutrients decrease downstream mainly due to uptake by epilithic algae and oxidation of NH4+ to NO3-, consequently lowering pH and dissolved O2, which was always under-saturated. Strong correlations between all these parameters support these findings. The epilithic algal community shows both temporal and spatial changes in biomass, composition and relative frequencies. Dominant species at the higher reach of the stream are cyanobacteria, mainly Chamaesiphon subglobosus (Rostafinski) Lemm. and a mesh of Leptolyngbya spp. filaments. The chlorophyta Prasiola calophylla (Carmich.) Menegh. dominates the community in oxygenated, fast-flowing reaches. Comparison with the other main stream from Cierva Point, which is not influenced by the rookery, shows that growth and survival of the epilithic community in this area is limited by factors other than nutrient concentrations.

The Dome C (Concordia) station in Antarctica (75°06′S, 123°21′E, 3233 m above mean sea level) has a unique opportunity to test the quality of remote-sensing measurements and meteorological analyses because it is situated well inside the Eastern Antarctic Plateau and is less affected by local phenomena. Measurements of tropospheric temperature and water vapour (H2O) together with the integrated water vapour (IWV) performed in 2010 are statistically analysed to assess their quality and to study the yearly correlation between temperature and H2O over the entire troposphere. The statistical tools include yearly evolution, seasonally-averaged mean and bias, standard deviation and linear Pearson correlation. The datasets are made of measurements from the ground-based microwave radiometer H2O Antarctica Microwave Stratospheric and Tropospheric Radiometer (HAMSTRAD), radiosonde, in situ sensors, the space-borne infrared sensors Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) on the MetOp-A platform and the Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS) on the Aqua platform, and the analyses from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF). Despite some obvious biases within all these datasets, our study shows that temperature and IWV are generally measured with high quality whilst H2O measurement quality is slightly worse. The AIRS and IASI measurements do not have the vertical resolution to correctly probe the lowermost troposphere, whilst HAMSTRAD loses sensitivity in the upper troposphere-lower stratosphere. Within the entire troposphere over the whole year, it is found that the time evolution of temperature and H2O is highly correlated (> 0.8). This suggests that, in addition to the variability of solar radiation producing an obvious diurnal cycle in the planetary boundary layer in summer and an obvious seasonal cycle over the year, the H2O and temperature intra-seasonal variabilities are affected by the same processes, e.g. related to the long-range transport of air masses.

Specimens of 22 species of pycnogonids belonging to twelve genera and seven families were collected during a cruise near Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands. Twenty two of the 94 stations yielded pycnogonids: the new species Ammothea hesperidensis is described fully, illustrated, and compared with similar species. The family Nymphonidae provided both the greatest diversity of species (seven) and number of specimens (35). The most abundant species were Achelia hoekii and Nymphon australe.
