Cryptosporidium is an intracellular parasite that belongs to the phylum Protozoa and subphylum Apicomplexa (Sporozoa). It was first described by from the digestive tract of laboratory mice (Garcia 2001), and has been found in several animal groups including fishes, reptiles, birds and mammals, including humans (Jellison et al. 2002).

Levels of polyhydric alcohols and oligosaccharides in the lichens Umbilicaria decussata and Usnea sphacelata were measured in samples obtained from unpolluted and polluted sites on Bailey Peninsula, Windmill Islands, Budd Coast. Undisturbed lichen possessed levels of these compounds (33 and 20 mg g-1 dry weight respectively) typical of those found in lichens from temperate climates. Plants from sites severely polluted by alkaline cement dust, derived from concrete mixing activities, possessed significantly lower levels (P < 0.01) of these intracellular constituents. Levels of chlorophyll a in Umbilicaria decussata were significantly correlated with total polyols + sugars (r2 = 0.88). We suggest that environmental impacts on Antarctic vegetation may be measured by parallel determinations of these two parameters on sensitive lichen species such as Umbilicaria decussata.

A geophysical data set including some 1400 km of reflection seismic profiles and 17000 km of gravity lines was recorded in the waters north-west of the Antarctic Peninsula during the austral spring cruise of RV Polarstern (October to December 1987). These data form a contribution to the earlier and continuing studies dealing with the tectonics of Bransfield Strait, the structure of the South Shetland Trench, and the segmentation of the adjacent oceanic crust. The seismic profiles and gravity data illustrate among other features the differential extension of Bransfield Strait and the structure and morphology of the former converging plate boundary, which vary corresponding to the time of the last ridge trench collision. Observations have been made about the active character of several oceanic fracture zones in time which meet the former plate boundary.

Heterotrophic soil protists encompass lineages that are both evolutionarily ancient and highly diverse, providing an untapped wealth of scientific insight. Yet the diversity of free-living heterotrophic terrestrial protists is still largely unknown. To contribute to our understanding of this diversity, we present a checklist of heterotrophic protists currently reported from terrestrial Antarctica, for which no comprehensive evaluation currently exists. As a polar continent, Antarctica is especially susceptible to rising temperatures caused by anthropogenic climate change. Establishing a baseline for future conservation efforts of Antarctic protists is therefore important. We performed a literature search and found 236 taxa identified to species and an additional 303 taxa identified to higher taxonomic levels in 54 studies spanning over 100 years of research. Isolated by distance, climate and the circumpolar vortex, Antarctica is the most extreme continent on Earth: it is not unreasonable to think that it may host physiologically and evolutionarily unique species of protists, yet currently most species discovered in Antarctica are considered cosmopolitan. Additional sampling of the more extreme intra-continental zones will probably result in the discovery of more novel and unique taxa.

The community composition of zooplankton with an emphasis on copepods was assessed in the frontal zones of the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean (SO) during summer 2013. Copepods were the dominant group in both the bongo net and multiple plankton sampler across the entire region. High zooplankton abundance was recorded along each transect in the Polar Front (PF). Community structure in this front was dominated by common taxa, including Ctenocalanus citer, Clausocalanus spp., Calanoides acutus, Calanus propinquus, Calanus australis and Rhincalanus gigas, which together accounted for > 62% of the total abundance. Calocalanus spp., Neocalanus tonsus and C. propinquus were indicator species in the Sub-Tropical Front (STF), Sub-Antarctic Front and PF, respectively. A strong contrast in population structure and biovolume was observed between then PF and the STF. The community structure of smaller copepods was associated with the high-temperature region, whereas communities of larger copepods were associated with the low-temperature region. Thus, it seems probable that physical and biological characteristics of the SO frontal regions are controlling the abundance and distribution of zooplankton community structure by restricting some species to the warmer stratified zones and some species to the well-mixed zone.

The thrust of this paper is that James Croll should be more generously lauded for his remarkable contribution to the study of ice ages, glacier flow and the nature of the Antarctic ice sheet. Croll was the first to calculate the link between fluctuations of the Earth’s orbit and glacial/interglacial cycles, and to identify the crucial role of positive feedback processes necessary to transform minor insolation changes into major climatic changes. He studied the mechanisms of glacier flow and explained flow over horizontal land surfaces at a continental scale, including the excavation of rock basins. Croll relied on a quantitatively based deductive approach. One of his most remarkable achievements was his study of the thickness, thermal regime and dynamics of the Antarctic ice sheet (1879). This contains important insights, which are relevant today, and yet the paper was published before anyone had landed on the continent!

A Pliocene (2.6–3.5 Ma) age is determined from glacial sediments studied in a 20 m long, 4 m deep trench excavated in Heidemann Valley, Vestfold Hills, East Antarctica. The age determination is based on a combined study of amino acid racemization, diatoms, foraminifera, and magnetic polarity, and supports earlier estimates of the age of the sedimentary section; all are beyond 14C range. Four till units are recognized and documented, and 16 subunits are identified. All are ascribed to deposition during a Late Pliocene glaciation that was probably the last time the entire Vestfold Hills was covered by an enlarged East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS). Evidence for other more recent glacial events of the ‘Vestfold Glaciation’ may have been due to lateral expansion of the Sørsdal Glacier and limited expansion of the icesheet margin during the Last Glacial Maximum rather than a major expansion of the EAIS. The deposit appears to correlate with a marine deposition event recorded in Ocean Drilling Program Site 1166 in Prydz Bay, possibly with the Bardin Bluffs Formation of the Prince Charles Mountains and with part of the time represented in the ANDRILL AND-1B core in the Ross Sea.

The aim of this study was to clarify the trophic patterns of the key species Pleuragramma antarctica in the Dumont d’Urville Sea, through its development and possible changes according to sampling locations. Variability in diet composition of larvae, juvenile and adult P. antarctica was analysed using fatty acid markers. Analysis of lipid class in P. antarctica reflected lipid accumulation with increasing size at all sampling stations. The fatty acid composition of triacylglycerol highlighted ontogenetic changes in the diet. Phytoplankton markers, such as C16PUFA:C16 and EPA:DHA ratios >1, and carnivorous markers in larvae suggested an omnivorous diet. Comparison between the fatty acid signature of P. antarctica older stages (juveniles and adults) and zooplankton species using OPLS-discriminant analysis indicated that juveniles fed mainly on euphausiid larvae and to a minor extent on copepods, and confirmed that non-herbivorous copepods were the main prey for adults. Our results suggest that different feeding patterns and a generalist strategy in P. antarctica with juveniles feeding on bigger prey than adults, probably as a result of prey availability according to their vertical segregation pattern.

Polar regions represent a unique environment for the study of mercury cycling in the global ecosystem. Our research was focused on the assessment of the origin and mobility of mercury in the geochemical cycle in Maritime Antarctic (James Ross Island) by means of atomic absorption spectrometry. Mercury content in a set of extrusive (subaerial, subaqueous) and intrusive (dyke) alkaline basalts ranged between 1.6 µg kg-1 (for samples without xenoliths) and 8 µg kg-1 (for samples containing crustal xenoliths). The mercury content in alkaline basalts indicates a very low concentration of mercury in peridotitic mantle sources. Samples of regolith from James Ross Island were subjected to a comprehensive analytical procedure proposed for ultra-trace mercury concentrations involving fractionation and thermal analysis. Total mercury contents in regolith (2.7–11.3 µg kg-1) did not deviate from the natural background in this part of Antarctica. Additionally, the obtained results are about two orders of magnitude smaller than values formerly assumed for primary mercury contents in basaltic lavas. Our results from Antarctica were compared with mercury contents in basaltic rocks from Greenland and the findings were confirmed. It seems that the input of mercury of geological origin into the polar ecosystem is apparently lower than expected.

Although spiders are a diverse and ecologically important group of predators across the sub-Antarctic islands, relatively little is known about their biology. Here we provide data on the abundance, body size variation and sex ratio of an indigenous spider, Myro kerguelenensis, across an altitudinal gradient on Marion Island. In so doing we test explicitly the hypotheses that density will decline with declining resource availability at higher elevations, and that a converse Bergmann body size cline will be found in this species. Density of M. kerguelenensis decreased with altitude and ranged from a mean density of 5.3 (SD 3.42) individuals per m2 at 50 m a.s.l. to a mean density of 0.83 (SD 1.15) individuals per m2 at 600 m a.s.l. Mean female sternum width was 1.39 mm (SD 0.44) and mean male sternum width was 1.40 mm (SD 0.22). No evidence for Bergmann or converse Bergmann clines was found. At increasing altitudes, sex ratios became increasingly female-biased with populations at 600 m a.s.l. comprising 0.87 (SD 0.28) females, on a proportional basis, possibly as a result of resource limitation and an increase in the prevalence of sexual cannibalism. The food web implications of this study are highlighted.

A mesoscale experiment was conducted in the Ross Sea near the shelf break in summer 1997–98 within the framework of the activities of the CLIMA Project of the Italian National Program for Antarctic Research (PNRA), focus on study the shelf—slope interaction between the shelf waters and the CDW in correspondence of the Antarctic Slope Front. This paper deals with the dissolved oxygen distribution and with the application of conservative tracers NO and PO related to the physical variables, improving understanding of mixing processes study in correspondence of the shelf break. Experimental data showed the presence of both Ice Shelf Water overflowing the shelf and Circumpolar Deep Water intruding onto the shelf. Dissolved Oxygen (DO), NO and PO resulted useful as chemical tracers in outlining the mixing processes and bottom water formation spreading off continental shelf break of the Ross Sea, in which seems to be evidence that ISW plays an important role. In fact, a plume of ISW was observed flowing down the continental slope to the deep ocean. From chemical tracers we estimate its magnitude to be about 0.4 ± 0.2 Sv.

Meiofaunal community structure in coastal sediments of Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea) was related to quantity and biochemical composition of sedimentary organic matter. The sediments were generally characterized by large amounts of chloropigments and labile compounds (dominated by proteins), indicating high inputs of primary organic matter. Meiofaunal densities were very high and comparable to those from the most productive areas worldwide. Sediments with high densities of the scallop had low meiofaunal densities especially in the top 2 cm, suggesting that scallop clapping contributed to meiofauna resuspension. However, it is not possible to exclude the probability that meiofauna are part of the scallop beds apparently have an important role in structuring meiofaunal communities with nematodes dominant where Adamussium colbecki is absent, and gastrotrichs dominant (44–51%) in A. colbecki beds, reaching the highest density reported so far.

The diet of Heard Island cormorants was investigated by examination of casts over three summer seasons. The diet was composed mainly of benthic organisms, with polychaetes being the most common prey for the greater part of the population. Fish were taken commonly only by the small breeding population at the western end of the island, whereas elsewhere only 22% of casts contained any fish remains at all. The diet is therefore different from that reported for Phalacrocorax atriceps at other localities.

Accurate assessment of the abundance of pinnipeds from visual surveys requires estimation of both the available (hauled-out) and unavailable (in-water) components of the population (Eberhardt et al. 1979). Continental estimates of the abundance of the four Antarctic seals are based on limited information on haul-out behaviour. In developing continental estimates, Erickson & Hanson (1990) corrected visual surveys of the hauled-out component of the species' populations using data from observational studies of haulout behaviour by Erickson et al. (1989). Erickson & Hanson (1990) point out that, because the observational studies did not account for an unknown fraction of seals that remained in the water during the peak haul-out period, their abundance estimates are minimum values. Further, Erickson & Hanson (1990) corrected the visual surveys for all four species using haul-out data for the crabeater seal only, as observational data for the other species were not available. This assumes that haul-out patterns are constant across species, which is largely untested. Consequently, there is potential for bias, in both a relative and absolute sense, in the estimated abundance of Antarctic seals.

During the 18th Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition (CHINARE-18, 2001–2002), a 102.18 m ice core was drilled at site LGB69 (70°50′06.6′′S, 77°04′28.9′′E, 1850 m a.s.l., accumulation rate 70 cm yr-1), located to the east of the Lambert Glacier basin. This ice core has been analysed for chemical composition. Based on the high definition of seasonal variations of major ions, the ice core was dated to cover 293 years (ad 1708–2001), with errors at the bottom end within ± 2 years. The non-sea salt SO42- time series provides a proxy for historical volcanic eruptions preserved in the core, and high non-sea salt SO42- concentrations are well correlated to some documented volcanic events, such as Tambora (ad 1815), Cosiguina (ad 1835), Krakatoa (ad 1883) and Tarawera (ad 1886).

The rapid warming observed in the western Antarctic Peninsula gives rise to a fast disintegration of ice shelves and thinning and retreat of marine-terminating continental glaciers, which is likely to raise global sea levels in the near future. In order to understand the contemporary changes in context and to provide constraints for hindcasting models, it is important to understand the Late Quaternary history of the region. Here, we build on previous work on the deglacial history of the western Antarctic Peninsula and we present four new cosmogenic 10Be exposure ages from Horseshoe Island in Marguerite Bay, which has been suggested as a former location of very fast ice stream retreat. Four samples collected from erratic pink granite boulders at an altitude of ~80 m above sea level yielded ages that range between 12.9 ± 1.1 ka and 9.4 ± 0.8 ka. As in other studies on Antarctic erratics, we have chosen to report the youngest erratic age (9.4 ± 0.8 ka) as the true age of deglaciation, which confirms a rapid thinning of the Marguerite Trough Ice Stream at the onset of Holocene. This result is consistent with other cosmogenic age data and other proxies (marine and lacustrine 14C and optically stimulated luminescence) reported from nearby areas.

Over a century ago microfaunal diversity was first recorded by James Murray in lakes at Cape Royds, Ross Island, Antarctica. The report stands as the seminal study for today’s biodiversity investigations, and as a baseline to evaluate changes in faunal communities and introductions. In the present study, Cape Royds lakes were revisited and the mitochondrial c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene and morphology were used to compare diversity of Rotifera, Tardigrada and Nematoda with the records Murray published in the early 1900s. Cyanobacterial mats and the water column were sampled for microfauna from the five largest lakes using methods described by Murray. Across all five lakes similar patterns were observed for species distribution of all three phyla reported by Murray over 100 years ago. Some changes in species assemblages were identified within and between lakes, but there were no new introductions of named species for the Cape Royds region. Some of the species included by Murray in his monograph have been recently redescribed as Antarctic endemics, but others still retain their original name from the Northern Hemisphere holotypes and are also in need of revision to adequately determine the true endemism for these faunal groups.

The permanent ice covers of the McMurdo Dry Valley lakes, Antarctica, are colonized by a diverse microbial assemblage. We collected ice cores from Lakes Fryxell, Hoare and Bonney. Propidium monoazide (PMA) was used in combination with quantitative PCR (qPCR) and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) to examine membrane integrity of prokaryotes in these extreme environments. PMA selectively penetrates cells with compromised membranes and modifies their DNA resulting in the suppression of PCR amplification. Our results based on analysis of 16S rRNA genes demonstrate that despite the hostile conditions of the Dry Valleys, the permanent ice covers of the lakes support a ‘potentially viable’ microbial community. The level of membrane integrity, as well as diversity, was higher in samples where sediment was entrapped in the ice cover. Pronounced differences in the fraction of cells with intact and compromised cell membranes were found for Lake Fryxell and east lobe of Lake Bonney, both expressed in differences in DGGE banding patterns and qPCR signal reductions. Limitations in the ability to distinguish between intact or compromised cells occurred in samples from Lake Hoare and west lobe of Lake Bonney due to low DNA template concentrations recovered from the samples.

The WorldView-2 (WV2) instrument, operated by DigitalGlobe, is the only high-resolution multispectral sensor currently capable of imaging the entirety of the Transantarctic Mountains (TAM), making it a valuable resource for remote compositional investigations. Through the utility of both field- and laboratory-based verification techniques, this study shows that biotic and abiotic chemical variations can be readily observed and mapped remotely. Within the McMurdo Dry Valleys (MDV), primary compositional variability, intra-lithologic compositional heterogeneity and variations in surface weathering and oxidation can be successfully identified and mapped, providing confidence in both the spectral capabilities of the WV2 instrument and the methodologies associated with calibrating and correcting these data. These studies within the MDV provide confidence in extending these analyses to more remote regions of the TAM, including the vicinity of Shackleton Glacier. The identification of comparable geochemical variations in these remote locations provides valuable additions to the currently available geologic maps at much lower spatial resolutions. This work confirms the utility of the WV2 instrument to identifying, quantifying and mapping geochemical variations throughout the TAM, supporting future field work and providing geospatial context for localized field and laboratory analyses.

The Mesozoic-Cenozoic volcanic arc of the Antarctic Peninsula is represented on Adelaide Island by a sedimentary and volcanic succession intruded by plutons. 40Ar-39 Ar step-heating age spectra have been obtained from volcanic rocks and hornblende separates from sedimentary clasts of plutonic origin. These spectra show evidence for some argon loss, but, in general, have plateau ages which are consistent with the mapped stratigraphy and with other geochronological controls, suggesting that they approximate to original ages. As a result the following events in the evolution of Adelaide Island can be recognized:

1) mostly marine Mesozoic sedimentation, 2) Early Cretaceous (c. 141 Ma) plutonism (recorded in clasts from conglomerates), 3) Cretaceous volcanism, 4) Late Cretaceous (possibly Tertiary) sedimentation, 5) Early Tertiary volcanism, which was acidic in eastern outcrops and intermediate elsewhere, and 6) Eocene intermediate volcanism and deposition of arc-derived conglomerates. Volcanism was possibly coeval with known Palaeocene-Eocene plutonic activity on Adelaide Island (part of the Antarctic Peninsula Batholith) and with volcanism of similar age in northern Alexander Island and the South Shetland Islands. The volcanism on Adelaide Island and the South Shetland Islands, at least, was associated with a westward migration of the Antarctic Peninsula arc.
