Scales and whole otoliths were used for age estimation of juvenile Notothenia rossii specimens collected at Potter Cove, King George Island, South Shetland Islands, between 1983 and 1988. Results from the analysis of both types of material showed 96.7% agreement. Likewise, the examination of otolith cross sections of chosen specimens confirmed in all the cases the age readings obtained from the second whole sagittal otolith. Although the commonly accepted 1 July was used as the birth date of the fish for age calculations, data indicate that 1 October is closer to the biological birth date, since this species hatches in Spring. The length-age range of the fish was 18–44 cm and 3–7 years respectively, which fits well with the known length-age distribution of juvenile specimens of the species in the fjord. A comparison between observed and back-calculated mean length of age group 3 (24.6 and 25 cm respectively) indicated that not only the larger fish but the full size range of this age group was represented in our samples. Mean length data at age presented here are similar to the ones reported for fish from Admiralty Bay, King George Island, but differ from those of fish caught off Elephant Island. The use of whole otoliths for age estimation of juvenile N. rossii proved to be a reliable method with a precision of one year but, this might not be an appropriate technique for adult specimens.

This study describes the ecology and distribution of the only two native Antarctic insects, the chironomid species Parochlus steinenii and Belgica antarctica, both found on Byers Peninsula (Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands). Parochlus steinenii inhabits lakes of the central plateau of Byers Peninsula associated with aquatic mosses on the bottom of lakes and in some streams of the South Beach area. Some streams have stable populations which are able to complete their life cycle while other streams have temporary, unstable populations. Belgica antarctica also inhabits streams running through mosses located in the South Beach area. Our data indicate that this species has a limited dispersal capability which is positively light activated for both adults and pupae. Both Antarctic midge species coexists on Byers Peninsula and share some stretches of streams. Isotopic studies show a non-selective feeding regime for both species with mixed carbon sources associated with both biofilm/microbial mats and mosses.

The keystone role of Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba Dana, in Southern Ocean ecosystems, means it is essential to understand the factors controlling their abundance and secondary production. One such factor that remains poorly known is the role of parasites. A recent study of krill diet using DNA analysis of gut contents provided a snapshot of the parasites present within 170 E. superba guts in a small area along the West Antarctic Peninsula. These parasites included Metschnikowia spp. fungi, Haptoglossa sp. peronosporomycetes, Lankesteria and Paralecudina spp. apicomplexa, Stegophorus sp. nematodes, and Pseudocollinia spp. ciliates. Of these parasites, Metschnikowia spp. fungi and Pseudocollinia spp. ciliates had previously been observed in E. superba, as had other genera of apicomplexans, though not Lankesteria and Paralecudina. In contrast, nematodes had previously only been observed in eggs of E. superba, and there are no literature reports of peronosporomycetes in euphausiids. Pseudocollinia spp., parasitoids which obligately kill their host, were the most frequently observed infection, with a prevalence of 12%. The wide range of observed parasites and the relatively high frequency of infections suggest parasites may play a more important role than previously acknowledged in E. superba ecology and population dynamics.

Dry permafrost - ground with temperature always below 0°C and containing negligible ice - overlying ice-cemented ground has been reported in the Dry Valleys of Antarctica and on Mars. Here we report on a new site (79°49.213'S, 83°18.860'W, 718 m elevation) located on the side of Mount Dolence in Ellsworth Land, Antarctica. Year-round temperature and humidity measurements indicate that dry permafrost is present between depths of 13.5 and 49.0 cm - the location of ice-cemented ground. The mean annual frost point of the ice-cemented ground is -17.0 ± 0.2°C and the mean annual frost point of the atmosphere is -22.7 ± 1°C. The corresponding mean annual temperatures are -19.2°C and -20.3°C. Neither the temperature of the ice-cemented ground nor the air rise above freezing. Both the dry permafrost and the ice table may be habitable. In the dry soil at 3 cm depth there are 80 hours in the summer when temperature exceeds -5°C and water activity exceeds 0.8. At the ice table, temperature exceeds -10°C and water activity exceeds 0.8 for 35 hours in the year. The ice table and the dry permafrost above it would be considered a ‘Special Region’ on Mars. Further microbial investigation of this site is indicated.

Lake Vanda, a perennially ice-covered Antarctic lake has a highly stratified structure with a pronounced density gradient from 45 m and is anoxic from 68 m down. In order to gain a greater understanding of the carbon cycling in the lake we attempted to measure sulphate reduction in the summer of 1994, but rates were below detectable limits of 1.2 × 106 mol sulphate yr−1. Therefore sulphate reduction was estimated by calculating the rate of sulphide diffusion from the anoxic zone. Sulphate reduction rates were estimated to be 17.7 × 103 mol sulphate yr−1, accounting for 30% of planktonic primary production over the whole lake, but over 100% of primary productivity in the deep chlorophyll maximum. Radiocarbon dating of organic matter in the sediment (565 ± 50 yr bp), suggests that little new organic carbon reaches the sediment from the upper water column. Oxygen diffusion into the anoxic zone could account for only 44% of sulphide reoxidation; therefore, alternative oxidizing potential presumably accounted for the remainder. Sulphate concentration may be controlled by the solubility limit for a mineral phase, perhaps gypsum, as it shows a positive correlation with conductivity. The sulphur species in the anoxic zone are highly enriched in 34S (sulphate δ34S = + 42 to + 46%0, sulphide δ34S = + 13.9%0) which may be explained by either selective removal of sulphide at the oxic/anoxic interface by precipitation of metal sulphides or previous loss ofH2S to the atmosphere. While sulphate reduction is an important part of the carbon cycle within the lake, the oligotrophic nature of Lake Vanda means that all microbiological process rates are very low. The data presented suggest a dynamic and complex history for Lake Vanda and are entirely consistent with present theories of the lake's history.

Analysis of multichannel seismic profiles collected on the continental rise off the Sabrina Coast, East Antarctica, has allowed the determination of the acoustic features that are indicative of major evolution steps of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) and highlights the role of meltwater that originated from Totten Glacier in shaping the margin architecture. The arrival of marine-terminating glaciers into the coastal region was recorded by an enhanced sediment input on the continental rise and the nucleation of channel-levees. Downslope sedimentary processes were dominant throughout the Late Cenozoic, testifying to the progressive growth of a highly dynamic, temperate ice sheet on the continent. The last evolutionary step marks the transition to when a full polar glacial regime occurred. The development of a prograding wedge with steeply dipping foresets on the continental shelf and slope exemplifies sedimentation at this time. Other sub-sea-floor observations indicate that downslope fluxes, triggered by glacial meltwater, were still able to deeply erode and deliver sediments to the rise area. This study's findings have led to the identification of expanded and well-preserved sedimentary successions, which we suggest should be considered as priority targets for future International Ocean Discovery Program deep drilling due to the sensitivity of the ice sheet in this area.

For the first time, photosynthesis of Myriogramme mangini (Gain) Skottsberg, one of the dominant red macroalgae in the sublittoral of Signy Island (South Orkney Islands), was studied in situ under natural irradiance levels in specially developed incubation chambers. M. mangini is adapted to low irradiance levels. Water transparency varied over the year. A maximum attenuation coefficient (kd) of 0.328 m−1 was reached in January, and the water was clearest in September with a kd value of 0.079 m−1. Classification of the water type on a Jerlov scale, gave water type 4 in January and II in May and June. The mean kd value over the year was 0.158 m−1 and the water was classified as Jerlov's water type 1. The euphotic depths (Zeu) for 1%, 0.1% and 0.01% surface irradiance levels were 29.1 m, 43.7 m and 58.3 m, respectively. Photosynthetic characteristics were determined, with the oxygen production rates and irradiance levels measured in situ, using P-I curves. The initial saturation irradiance (Ik) varied significantly from 18.0 ± 1.5 μmol m−2 s−1 in autumn to 10.5 ± 1.8 μmol m−2 s−1 in early spring. Mean photosynthetic capacity (Pg max) ranged from 57.2 ± 1.3 μmol O2 g−1DW h−1 to 63.1 ± 1.6 μmol O2 g−1DW h−1. The photosynthetic efficiency (α) was 3.2 ± 0.2 μmol O2 g−1DW h−1 (μmol m−2 s−1)−1 in autumn and 6.0 ± 1.0 μmol O2 g−1DW h−1 (μmol m−2 s−1)−1 in early spring. Compensation irradiance (Ic) was low and ranged from 2.5 to 2.8 μmol m−2 s−1. Estimates of annual net production rates were 128.1 and 0.6 mmol O2 g−1DW y−1 at 5 m depth and 20 m depth, respectively. A maximum depth of occurrence of M. mangini was predicted at 22.9 m (2.7% of the surface irradiance).

Cape Dubouzet is mainly composed of a volcanic-subvolcanic complex of extrusive rhyolitic breccias, a banded rhyolite and a semi-annular body of dacite porphyry rich in xenoliths of metamorphic rocks. Major and REE geochemistry indicate that the volcanic rocks are calc-alkaline and that they are genetically related by fractional crystallization of a plagioclase-bearing assemblage from a common magma. Rb-Sr data suggest that the rhyolitic complex is of Middle-to-Late Jurassic age, and that it is intruded by Late Cretaceous stocks of banded diorite and gabbro. All these rocks are partially covered by moraines whose clasts are of local provenance. Xenoliths in the dacite porphyry suggest that the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula is underlain by a metamorphic complex composed of amphibolites, meta-tonalites and pelitic gneiss containing garnet, sillimanite, cordierite, hercynite, and andalucite. Such rocks are not known in the Scotia metamorphic complex, nor in the Trinity Peninsula Group and its low grade metamorphic derivatives, which also occur as rare xenoliths in the dacite. Previous dating of xenoliths collected from the moraines suggested a late Carboniferous age for this amphibolite-grade metamorphism. Both the Jurassic-Cenozoic magmatic arc of the Antarctic Peninsula and the accretionary complex rocks of the Trinity Peninsula Group were thus developed, at least in part, over pre-existing continental crust.

Marambionella andreae gen. et sp. nov. from the La Meseta Formation (Upper Eocene–?Lower Oligocene) on Seymour Island is the first fossil clupeid found in Antarctica and the first articulated teleost from the Antarctic Paleogene. It shows a mosaic of similarities and differences compared with various clupeid genera. This and the uncertainty about the polarity of characters within clupeids do not allow precise assessment of the phylogenetic relationships of Marambionella.

Knowledge regarding interactions between predators and their prey is fundamental for understanding underlying links between climate change and ecosystem responses, including predator demographics, in the Southern Ocean. This study reports data on reproductive performance, total population size and diet composition for macaroni and chinstrap penguins breeding at Nyrøysa on Bouvetøya during the summers of 1996–97, 1998–99, 2000–01 and 2007–08. The breeding populations of these two species at Nyrøysa decreased significantly over the study period, with an 80% decline for chinstraps and a 50% decline for macaroni penguins, despite relatively high levels of chick production. During this period macaroni penguins at this site ate a diverse diet, dominated by myctophid fish and two krill species, whereas chinstrap penguins were Antarctic krill specialists. The population changes are probably primarily due to the expanding Antarctic fur seal population, and also to landslides that are the result of increased melting on the island which have destroyed penguin breeding sites. Additional impacts from global warming of the ocean might also be playing a role and could exacerbate the decline in these penguin populations if krill and other prey are negatively impacted in the future in this region. The local chinstrap penguin population would probably be most heavily affected given its narrow feeding niche and small current population size.

Knowledge of copepod abundance and distribution has been limited, particularly in the Indian Ocean sector, as the use of coarse sampling gear has meant that copepods were frequently lost from the catch. This study analyses samples obtained from Prydz Bay using a fine mesh (300 μm) Rectangular Midwater Trawl (RMT1) net during summer 1992–93. Results demonstrate that a net of mesh 4.5 mm used in previous studies underestimates total copepod abundance by a factor of 38. The abundance of the smaller species has been underestimated the most. New estimates of copepod biomass indicate that copepods represent approximately 27% of krill biomass. Copepod and krill distributions are shown to be discrete at 82.4% dissimilarity. Mean temperature accounted for 33.6% of the variation in copepod distribution while two of the species showed a slight correlation with chlorophyll a pigment data. These results highlight the numerical importance of copepods and the species' distributions in the East Antarctic marine ecosystem.

A suite of 21 elements, namely Al, As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, La, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Sr, Ti, V and Zn, was investigated in a sediment core from the Ross Sea, Antarctica. The experimental results were treated by chemometric techniques. The elemental composition of core H2 was found to be mainly dominated by terrigenous elements, but it is also influenced by biological factors, such as the presence of corals. No evidence of anthropogenic contamination was observed, even in the top layer of the sediment. Furthermore, the modified Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) three-step sequential extraction procedure was applied to evaluate metal mobility and availability. The results confirmed the separation between higher and lower sections of the core and showed the presence of Fe as amorphous and crystalline oxide and of Mn mostly as nodules. The high percentages of metals extracted into the fourth fraction indicate their strong binding with the sediment matrix. Finally, BCR procedure was compared to Tessier's protocol which made it possible to distinguish between mobile and mobilizable fraction. Therefore, in general partitioning procedure must be chosen taking into account the nature of the sample and the aim of the research.

Oxygen isotope ratios in the shell of a Recent Antarctic marine bivalve Laternula elliptica are shown and their potential for environmental reconstruction is discussed. The shell δ18O profiles of this species represent the seasonal change in melted ice water inflow. Oscillations in the shell δ18O values reflect seasonal change in seawater δ18O values, caused by an addition of meltwater in summer. Since annual temperature variation is minimal and the inflow of the regional ice-melt is the dominant control on the shell δ18O values, the oxygen isotope record of L. elliptica is a quantitative indicator of the palaeo-ice-melting events in the Antarctic continental margin.

Correlation of Rodinian and Gondwanan crustal domains relies on a thorough knowledge of those vestiges preserved today. The Bunger Hills hold a critical place in East Antarctica, recording the Mesoproterozoic assembly of Australo-Antarctica in Rodinia and the Neoproterozoic–Cambrian amalgamation of Indo- and Australo-Antarctica in Gondwana. It is situated in a region of disputed overlap between the different components of Rodinia and Gondwana, where there is little consensus on the location of sutures in this region and thus often speculative geological interpretations. The Bunger Hills therefore provide an opportunity to better understand the tectonic setting and palaeogeography during the assembly of these supercontinents. Recent work has confirmed that the Bunger Hills are one of few rare outcrops in Wilkes Land, East Antarctica that can be directly correlated with the broader Musgrave–Albany–Fraser–Wilkes Orogen (MAFWO). Whilst other constituent terranes of the MAFWO have been intensely studied, our geological knowledge of the Bunger Hills was comparatively limited until recently. In light of recent geological and geophysical developments, this contribution serves as an updated and concise standalone reference for the present state of knowledge of the Neoarchean–Cambrian evolution of the Bunger Hills region.

Biogeographical patterns among deep sea benthic communities in the Drake Passage remain poorly understood as a consequence of poor sampling resolution and the spatial remoteness of many sea floor features. Hard-bottom features, including at least 20 seamounts, remain uncharacterized with respect to their benthic megafaunal community assemblages. Here, we present community assemblage patterns from several locations across the Drake Passage to better understand the faunal relationships between deep sea floor communities in the region. Towed camera surveys were conducted on nine topographical features ranging from shelf environments on the southern Chilean Margin, the western Antarctic Peninsula shelf and seamounts in the central Drake Passage. These are the first quantitative measurements of megafaunal abundance at two seamount complexes in the central Drake Passage and multivariate analyses are used to examine the factors influencing species distributions. Three biogeographical groupings were identified based on species assemblages and environmental variables specific to major water mass boundaries in the region: sub-Antarctic Mode Water (318–523 m), Antarctic Intermediate Water (504–1128 m) and Circumpolar Deep Water (1837–3034 m). Further examination of megafaunal associations between sea floor structures may provide clues as to how sub-Antarctic communities are connected throughout the greater Southern Ocean.

Data on the content and speciation of mercury (Hg) in the soils of Antarctica are scarce and vary greatly between the regions studied, but overall Hg concentrations found were generally very low. We investigated the Hg quantity and speciation by solid-phase Hg pyrolysis and chemical fractionation in selected maritime Antarctic soils, comparing ornithogenic and non-ornithogenic areas of the Fildes and Ardley peninsulas of King George Island. The total Hg contents ranged from 4.3–256 ng g-1, and values for ornithogenic soils were the highest recorded for Antarctic soils. A close correlation between Hg and organic matter was observed in the ornithogenic soils, with levels decreasing with depth. In the non-ornithogenic soils, a correlation between Hg content and soil depth was also observed, but the values were found to increase with depth. Thermograms showed that all Hg was in the 2+ oxidation state and was predominantly linked to organic matter, corroborating the chemical fractionation results for the ornithogenic soils. These results show the need for further refined studies about the interactions of Hg with organic matter in order to better understand the biogeochemistry of this metal in the Antarctic environment.

In 1991 Chamsocephalus gunnari <1 year old were sampled at Shag Rocks on 18 January and off five bays on the north-east coast of South Georgia between 19 January and 12 February. Two separate size-groups of 31–46 mm and 55–87mm standard length (SL) were found at Shag Rocks. However, samples taken off Possession Bay, South Georgia, within two days of those at Shag Rocks, contained only one size-group of 25–57 mm SL. Samples taken at other locations at South Georgia also contained only single size-groups between 24–63 mm SL. The mean and median length of the large size-group at Shag Rocks are significantly larger (P<0.001) than those at South Georgia. For those at South Georgia there was an apparent growth of around 0.76% SL d−1, which is comparable with previous reports of their growth rate during the first year. Based on this growth rate, the differences between the average size of the larger size-group of C. gunnari at Shag Rocks and those at South Georgia indicates that they hatched at periods separated by about three months. This and other published evidence suggests there may be separate populations of C. gunnari at Shag Rocks and South Georgia.

Algal communities colouring snow and ice were studied at fourteen sites on Cierva Point (Danco Coast, Antarctic Peninsula). Chlorophyta were the dominant group in cryobiontic communities, both in species richness and abundance. Cyanobacteria and diatoms, in turn, showed a higher species number at low altitude, well drained temporary snow fields, probably denoting a cryoxenic character. Descriptions of the six species newly recorded for Antarctica are given, and the taxonomic position of some Scotiella, Trochiscia and Koliella species is discussed. Further research is needed to assess the importance of various stress factors in the progressive drop in species richness and biosynthesis of secondary carotenoids associated with a change in snow colour from green to orange-red to pink-red.

In the 1980s, penguins dominated the prey remains of sub-Antarctic skuas Stercorarius antarcticus breeding on Marion Island, whereas on neighbouring Prince Edward Island burrowing petrels made up >95% of prey remains in nest middens. This difference resulted at least in part from the impact of introduced cats Felis catus on Marion Island’s burrowing petrel populations. Cats were introduced to Marion Island in 1949, and prior to their eradication in 1991, they killed an estimated 450 000 petrels each year, greatly reducing the densities of petrels breeding on the island. A repeat survey of skua prey remains showed that penguins still dominated the prey of breeding sub-Antarctic skuas on Marion Island in the summer of 2010–11, two decades after cats were eradicated from the island. The proportion of penguin remains decreased slightly compared to 1987–88, but this might be expected given the decreases in penguin numbers on Marion Island over this period. Regurgitated pellets confirmed the dominance of penguin prey on Marion Island. Taken together with the decrease in skua numbers on Marion Island over the last two decades, our results suggest that there has been little recovery in the population of at least summer-breeding burrowing petrels since cats were eradicated.
