Zircon and apatite fission track (AFT) thermochronology was applied to the James Ross Basin sedimentary rocks from James Ross and Seymour islands. The probable sources of these sediments were generated in Carboniferous to Early Paleogene times (∼315 to 60 Ma). The total depths of individual James Ross Basin formations are discussed. The AFT data were modelled, and the thermal history model was reconstructed for samples from Seymour Island. The first stage after a period of total thermal annealing (when the samples were above 120°C) involved Late Triassic cooling (∼230 to 200 Ma) and is followed by a period of steady cooling through the whole apatite partial annealing zone (PAZ, 60–120°C) to minimum temperature in Paleocene/Early Eocene. The next stage was the maximum burial of sedimentary rocks in the Eocene (∼35 Ma, 1.1–1.8 km) and the final cooling and uplift of Seymour Island sedimentary rocks at ∼35 to 20 Ma.

Flux data from moored sediment trap experiments and mass accumulation rates in sediments were obtained for three sites in the Ross Sea which are currently studied for the formation and transit of High Salinity Shelf Water and Ice Shelf Water. These two data sets were compared to obtain inferences on the coupling between water column processes and sedimentary records. The depth distribution of physical features and concentrations of organic carbon and biogenic silica in box cores and gravity cores were studied. Mass accumulation rates, established on the basis of two conventional 14C dates for each core, range between 7.64 and 19.46 g m−2 yr−1. Although these are productive areas, downward fluxes measured by sediment traps are low: 7.5–25.6, 2.4–17.9 and 0.5–0.9 g m−2 yr−1 for particles, biogenic silica and organic carbon, respectively. The concentrations of biogenic components in surficial sediments are correspondingly low. Simple mass balances were calculated assuming the conservative behaviour of the lithic fraction of sinking materials and sediment. Lateral advection of suspended particles is needed to balance the fluxes at the three sites. Furthermore, the model suggests that the preservation of biogenic components is lower than at other sites of the Ross Sea, probably due to the low accumulation rates that imply a high residence time of biogenic materials at the sediment-water interface.

Deschampsia antarctica Desv. (Poaceae) is the only native Gramineae found in the Antarctic, where it is restricted to the Antarctic Peninsula and its offshore islands. Its ability to survive the harsh climate has attracted the interest of scientists searching for genes associated with freezing tolerance (Alberdi et al. 2002). For continuing research purposes it would be better if plants did not have to be collected from the field, but could be propagated effectively to provide the necessary experimental material D. antarctica normally reproduces both by seed produced by self-fertilization and also vegetatively from tillers (Holderegger et al. 2003). Vegetative propagation is slow and unable to generate enough plant material for laboratory requirements. This difficulty prompted us to develop a rapid micro-propagation method using tissue-culture methods for the production of large numbers of plants in relatively short periods.

Species inventories are essential to the implementation of conservation policies to mitigate biodiversity loss and maintain ecosystem services and their value to the society. This is particularly topical with respect to climate change and direct anthropogenic effects on Antarctic biodiversity, with the identification of the most at-risk taxa and geographical areas becoming a priority. Identification tools are often neglected and considered helpful only for taxonomists. However, the development of new online information technologies and computer-aided identification tools provides an opportunity to promote them to a wider audience, especially considering the emerging generation of scientists who apply an integrative approach to taxonomy. This paper aims to clarify essential concepts and provide convenient and accessible tools, tips and suggested systems to use and develop knowledge bases (KBs). The software Xper3 was selected as an example of a user-friendly KB management system to give a general overview of existing tools and functionalities through two applications: the ‘Antarctic Echinoids’ and ‘Odontasteridae Southern Ocean (Asteroids)’ KBs. We highlight the advantages provided by KBs over more classical tools, and future potential uses are highlighted, including the production of field guides to aid in the compilation of species inventories for biodiversity conservation purposes.

The recognition of a Mesoproterozoic large igneous province (LIP) across large parts of southern Africa has been strengthened by recent geochronology, geochemistry and petrology. The c. 1100 Ma Umkondo province has been recognized across parts of Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Mozambique where tholeiitic sills, dykes and rare lava flows have been correlated into a single magmatic province emplaced in the interval 1108–1112 Ma. The extension of the province into the Dronning Maud Land region of Antarctica has been suggested by several workers, but detailed analyses of geochemistry and petrogenesis are lacking, as are comparative studies. This study investigates 25 dykes and sills of the Borgmassivet intrusions which include several of the major diorite sills of the province, up to 300 m in thickness. The dykes and sills are also considered to be c. 1100 Ma and they were emplaced, in part, synchronously with the Ritscherflya Supergroup sedimentary sequence. The Borgmassivet intrusions are characterized by geochemical signatures that suggest the magmas were either extensively contaminated by continental crust or derived from an enriched lithospheric mantle source, where the enrichment was related to earlier subduction. The limited geochemical range of the Borgmassivet and Umkondo intrusions are probably not consistent with significant levels of crustal contamination. Furthermore, the trace element ratios indicate a source in the sub-lithospheric mantle, followed by gabbroic fractionation and interaction with lithospheric wall rocks.

Within the Jones Mountains, which form part of the Thurston Island crustal block, up to 700 m of Miocene (c. 10 Ma) pillow basalt and palagonitized volcaniclastic rocks unconformably overlie Jurassic granitic basement and Cretaceous volcanic rocks and dykes. New geochemical analyses demonstrate the alkalic nature of the basalts, which range in composition from alkali basalt to basanite. Unradiogenic Sr-isotope ratios (0.7031–0.7034), coupled with low LILE/HFSE ratios (e.g. Th/Ta c. 1.4, Rb/Nb 0.3–0.9) indicate a predominantly asthenospheric source for the basalts. The Jones Mountains basalts are geochemically similar to the alkalic basalts of Marie Byrd Land, but have consistently lower K/Ba and higher Ba/Nb ratios than Late Cenozoic alkalic basalts along the Antarctic Peninsula. These regional variations in geochemical composition apparently reflect differences in tectonic setting and are not the result of lithospheric interaction or partial melting/crystallization effects. The generation of alkalic magmas along the Antarctic Peninsula was causally related to the formation of slab windows following ridge crest-trench collision and the cessation of subduction, whereas the Jones Mountains alkalic basalts may represent the expression of the northward propagation of the head of the Marie Byrd Land plume.

We utilized an automated ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis (ARISA) method as a more rapid alternative to classical morphological/nutritional identification and a less expensive alternative to sequencing for identification and grouping of isolates in culture-based fungal abundance studies. This method is well suited for the study of culturable Antarctic soil fungal communities where both abundance and diversity are relatively low. We optimized template concentration and verified the effect of primer selection from eight commonly used fungal polymerase chain reaction primers on ARISA chromatographs for 46 fungal species commonly isolated from south Victoria Land. A database of Antarctic fungal electropherograms was produced containing each of the species and was used as the first step in a tiered system for species identification. In addition, isolates containing more than one species were identified, allowing isolates not in the database to be sequenced for further analysis. This method unambiguously identified 78% of the fungal taxa in this study and we were able to rapidly determine which isolates should be subjected to further analysis by DNA sequencing. Using this approach, the cost of analysis for abundance studies can be greatly reduced compared to DNA sequencing of each isolate.

The planktonic microbial communities of three meltwater ponds, located on the McMurdo Ice Shelf, were investigated from the end of January 2008 to early April, during which almost the entire pond volumes froze. The ponds were comprised of an upper mixed layer overlying a salt-stabilized density gradient in which planktonic communities were primarily embedded. Plankton comprised all components of the “microbial loop”, though carnivorous protists were rare. As the ponds froze and light became increasingly limited, it was expected conditions would induce physiological changes altering the functional role of autotrophic and heterotrophic microplankton within the ponds. The results showed that microbial groups responded to the onset of winter by declining in abundance, though an exception was the appearance of filamentous cyanobacteria in the water column in March. As freezing progressed, autotrophs declined more rapidly than heterotrophs and grazing rates and abundances of mixotrophic and heterotrophic organisms increased. Grazing pressure on bacteria and picophytoplankton also increased, in part explaining their decline over time. The results indicate that stressors imposed during freezing select for increasing heterotrophy within the remaining microbial communities, although all components of the food web eventually decline as the final freeze approaches.

The circum-Antarctic clam Laternula elliptica (King & Broderip 1831) is the largest infaunal bivalve of the Southern Ocean. It mostly lives in water depths of less than 100 m (highest densities from 20–30 m; e.g. Ahn 1994), in soft or semi-consolidated substrates from sandy mud to gravelly sand (Soot-Ryen 1951, Nicol 1966). Animals are deep-burrowing (to >0.5 m; Zamorano et al. 1986) and consequently have large siphons. These are fused, highly muscular and covered by thick, rugose periostracum, and are capable of partial retraction only (Burne 1920). The ecology of L. elliptica was likened by Ralph & Maxwell (1977) to that of Mya arenaria L. in northern temperate and Arctic waters.

Snowpit samples collected at the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) Divide location in January 2013 were analysed to investigate the levels and variations of perchlorate concentrations in Antarctic snow. During 2008–12, the perchlorate concentration in WAIS Divide snow ranged between 6–180 ng l–1 and followed a seasonal cycle. The highest concentrations appeared in the autumn, and the lowest in winter and spring. No apparent correlation was observed between perchlorate and nitrate or chloride concentrations in snow. Since perchlorate is believed to form in the atmosphere when chlorine species are oxidized in reactions involving ozone, perchlorate concentrations were hypothesized to be high during the spring, based on the assumption that stratospheric ozone depletion enhances tropospheric perchlorate production. The data show that perchlorate concentrations in snow were sharply reduced during stratospheric ozone depletion events; the evidence, therefore, does not support the hypothesis. Instead, the results suggest a stratospheric origin of perchlorate in Antarctic snow.

Late Cretaceous–early Tertiary subduction-related fore-arc volcanic rocks are exposed in a north–south linear belt along the length of Alexander Island. The age and tectonic setting of these rocks is well understood; they are not considered to represent “normal” arc magmas but were generated in the fore-arc as a result of ridge subduction. Due to their distinct composition and mode of formation, they are no longer considered to be genetically related to the Antarctic Peninsula magmatic arc. They are therefore removed from the Antarctic Peninsula Volcanic Group and placed in a newly defined Alexander Island Volcanic Group. The group is made up of the Monteverdi, Staccato, Walton, Colbert, Elgar and Finlandia formations, which vary widely in lithology, facies and age. The Colbert and Elgar formations are subdivided into nine and three members respectively. Type localities, representative lithologies and age of each of the formations are discussed. The Staccato and Colbert Magmatic complexes are defined to include volcanic and plutonic rocks that are considered to be coeval. The Rouen Intrusive complex combines the plutonic rocks from the Rouen Mountains and Rothschild Island on the basis of age and chemistry.

McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, is home to a unique marine biota with an ecology that has evolved in this frigid environment over millions of years. The region is one of the least disturbed, and possibly the last pristine, marine ecosystem on Earth. Here, the results of three seasons of fishing in the shallow nearshore waters of McMurdo Sound are reported. A shift in the composition of small fish species at one site, Inaccessible Island, has been observed in just five years. The shift in shallow water species composition occurred during a period that followed the maturation of a commercial fishery for the Antarctic toothfish, Dissostichus mawsoni Norman, a predator of smaller fish, and the presence of a large iceberg, termed B-15, at the mouth of McMurdo Sound during the early 2000s that trapped the annual sea ice in the area leading to the unusual accrual of multi-year sea ice. The data presented here provide a current record of species composition and physiological condition of small, shallow water fishes at three sites in McMurdo Sound, providing a current baseline for the assessment of future changes wrought by environmental changes and unprecedented fishery pressures in the Ross Sea.

Organochlorine contaminants (OCs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were investigated in the eggs of five bird species from the South Shetland Islands. Additionally, OCs and PBDEs were also analysed in embryos of two species. The concentration ranges in eggs were (ng g-1 wet weight) 2.11 to 541 for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), <0.25 to 0.88 for PBDEs, 2.45 to 405 for p,p’-DDE and 1.50 to 603 for mirex. The PCBs were predominant in the eggs of Macronectes giganteus, Catharacta antarctica and Larus dominicanus, whereas hexachlorobenzene (HCB) was the major compound found in the eggs of Pygoscelis antarcticus and Sterna vittata. The PBDE congeners were detected only in the eggs of C. antarctica (PBDE 47 and 153) and S. vittata (PBDE 47). There were differences in OC concentrations of up to two orders of magnitude between M. giganteus embryos which were related to the development stage and OC concentrations in the respective eggs. Trophic ecology and post-breeding dispersal exerted an influence on contaminant patterns. Comparisons with data from the literature indicate an increase in the concentrations of some OCs over recent years.

Atmospheric surface pressures on the East Antarctic ice sheet are examined as a contribution to a new regional climatology based on automatic weather stations (AWS). Monthly mean pressures along two meridional AWS lines show near the coast a semi-annual oscillation with equinoctial minima, which become submerged inland under a larger annual oscillation, asymmetrically shaped around a summer solstice peak. Such a peak could arise when air surrounding the ice sheet is heated and enabled to spread out over the ice. This concept has provided a classical prediction of the ice sheet's mean elevation; in this paper the theory is expressed in a more modern form. After the summer “flood” the vertical tropospheric circulation driving the progressive katabatic surface layer drainage from the ice sheet should create relatively higher pressures below the convergence region over the ice sheet center and lower pressures near the coast. In fact the observed mean monthly surface pressures decrease with elevation more slowly than follows from substituting the observed mean temperature-elevation gradients (“topographical lapse rates”) in the hydrostatic equation. However, below the surface inversion along the sloping ice sheet surface the hydrostatic balance is shown to be governed by temperatures higher than observed at the surface. Hydrostatic pressures are calculated with climatic estimates of the inversion strength. Their differences from the observed monthly mean surface pressures represent non-hydrostatic residuals which can be added to pressures at the coast to form elevation-free (“sea level”) pressure profiles. These show both the expected coastal troughs and high pressure over an ice sheet summit (Dome C).

Here we describe a new terrestrial mammal from the Eocene of Seymour Island (Isla Marambio) represented by a lower left third molar and assigned to a new species of Sparnotheriodontidae, an ungulate family with a broad palaeobiogeographical distribution in South America. The specimen was found in the Cucullaea I allomember of the La Meseta Formation, in a new mammalian locality (IAA 2/16). Notiolofos regueroi sp. nov. shares a brachyodont, lophoselenodont and bicrescentic molar pattern with N. arquinotiensis, recorded for a stratigraphic sequence of 17.5 Ma in Antarctica. The criteria for the species differentiation are the absence of mesial and labial cingulids, the larger paraconid, the wider talonid basin, the accentuated distal projection of the hypoconulid, the centroconid development and the smaller size. Together with the astrapotherian Antarctodon sobrali, they represent the medium to large terrestrial mammals of the early Eocene Antarctic landscape that was mostly dominated by closed forests of Nothofagus. Dental wear facets and differences in their body mass are inferred and discussed as possible evidence of niche differentiation. Additionally, the presence of land mammals with Patagonian affinities in the Eocene of Antarctica reinforces the Cretaceous–Palaeocene presence of the Weddellian Isthmus, a functional land corridor between Antarctica and South America.

Satellite imagery, synoptic-scale analyses and automatic weather station data were used to study a subsynoptic-scale cyclone that developed over the Ross Sea and Ross Ice Shelf areas of Antarctica. A pre-existing subsynoptic-scale midtropospheric cyclone descended from southern Victoria Land into the semi-permanent baroclinic environment over the south-western corner of the Ross Sea. The subsynoptic-scale cyclone then developed into a frontal system travelling south-eastward over the Ross Ice Shelf and decayed five days later over Marie Byrd Land. It is concluded that stretching of the subsynoptic-scale low, while descending over 2000 m from the high plateau down to sea level, increased its cyclonic vorticity via conservation of potential vorticity. This, along with a cold katabatic outbreak into the northern part of the circulation, provided the mechanisms for its initial development. Subsequently, cold boundary-layer air over the Ross Ice Shelf spiralled into the subsynoptic-scale cyclone supporting its further development. An upper-level synoptic-scale cyclone that approached the area provided the upper-level support for its ESE displacement and development.

We describe a new association for Antarctica, involving an holothuroid host, Bathyplotes bongraini Vaney, 1914, and a parasitic polynoid polychaete, Eunoe opalina McIntosh, 1885, which lives on the host body. Both species have never been recorded in the study area, the Ross Sea. The ecological definition of this partnership is difficult to assess, being a mix of phoresis, protective association, parasitism and, possibly, kleptocommensalism. Eunoe opalina emerges also as a true predator, ingesting several food items that do not belong to the diet of Bathyplotes. We compare this association with analogous examples known from shallow tropical environments as well as bathyal and abyssal depths. Given the conspicuous similarities between the deep water and high latitude examples of this kind of association, a possible common origin is hypothesized. Although the role of such a kind of parasitic relationships in Antarctic communities remains to be fully evaluated, it seems evident that, at high latitudes, where trophic levels are simplified and food webs do not have much redundancy, the impact of such a ‘multitasking’ predator-parasite as E. opalina might be of a greater magnitude than its shallow water tropical counterpart.

A detailed profile of the ice fabric, the deuterium content and the sodium concentration of a 1.64 m long, first-year sea-ice core from Breid Bay, near Syowa station (Antarctica), is described. The core consists mainly of frazil ice (77%), a common feature observed in recent extended studies of the first-year sea-ice cover in the Weddell Sea area. Neither snow ice, nor platelet ice is present. The remainder of the core consists of congelation ice. The typical substructure of ice plates/brine lamellae occurs only at the bottom of the core. Otherwise fine-grained congelation ice is ‘sandwiched’ between layers of frazil. It lacks the intracrystalline substructure but shows a strong textural elongation and c-axis clustering in the horizontal plane. The evolution processes of the first-year sea-ice cover in Breid Bay are analysed. The dynamical component, demonstrated to play a major role in the eastern Weddell Sea, seems to be of minor importance in this area, where thermodynamics satisfactorily explains the isotopic, chemical and textural characteristics of the core. It is proposed that the topmost part of the core consists of frazil ice produced by wind- and wave-induced turbulence. Once a consolidated ice cover is provided, the growth proceeds at a slower rate, through congelation ice formation and frazil ice production, initiated by thermohaline convection processes in the water column. The lower alternate layers of fine grained congelation ice and frazil ice could result from cyclic thermal and salinity regimes at the ice-water interface, connected with the major meteorological events of the year.

The diet of grey-headed albatrosses at Diego Ramírez was analysed and compared to that of the sympatric black-browed albatross. Diet composition was inferred from an analysis of prey hard parts present in 103 chick regurgitates obtained during breeding seasons 2000, 2001 and 2002. The squid Martialia hyadesi predominated in the diet samples in 2001 and 2002 (89% and 81% of reconstituted mass), but was absent from the 2000 samples. Reconstituted mean mass per sample in 2000 was significantly lower than in 2001 and 2002. Chick growth rate during 2000 was also the lowest recorded. This suggests that M. hyadesi plays an important role in the breeding performance of grey-headed albatrosses at Diego Ramírez. Low presence of M. hyadesi in grey-headed albatrosses' diet at South Georgia in 2000, a year with significant low breeding success, suggests ocean-wide processes affecting the availability of this prey to both populations simultaneously. Overlap in diet composition, and inferred feeding areas, between the sympatric albatross species at Diego Ramírez was minimal. Grey-headed albatrosses fed mainly on species associated with the Antarctic Polar Front, whereas black-browed albatrosses consumed benthopelagic species frequently caught in fishing operations in southern Chile.
