Martenscypridopsis n. gen. and Martenscypridopsis materia n. sp. from Algerian inland waters are described. The new genus belongs to the group of genera in the subfamily Cypridopsinae where the right valve overlaps the left one both anteriorly and ventrally ; it is also the second genus within the subfamily where both sexes completely lack the furca. The new genus includes also the species Martenscypridopsis pygmea (Sars, 1924) n. comb., from South and Central Africa.

Dans le but d'évaluer les perspectives de valorisation de l'algue verte Scenedesmus abundans Chlorophyceae, sa compositionbiochimique a été réalisée sur des cultures soumises à différentes conditions environnementales. Parmi les facteurs retenus, latempérature a le plus d'influence. Les teneurs en protéines sont maximales à 15°C, celles des composés lipidiques et glucidiquesà 25 et 35°C respectivement. L'intensité lumineuse n'affecte pas la composition biochimique globale, si ce n'est une baisse d'environ20 % des substances lipidiques, sous un éclairement de 300 µmol quanta.m-2.s-1. De même, la source azotée a peu d'effetsignificatif sur les teneurs des 3 constituants cellulaires. L'augmentation de la concentration en azote induit un accroissement desteneurs en protéines et en lipides avec cependant une réduction de la production de biomasse, au-delà de 400 mg.l-1 de KNO3.Des modifications de la composition biochimique de Scenedesmus abundans en fonction du stade de croissance ont égalementété observées. En phase de croissance stationnaire, ces modifications se résument en une réduction marquée de la teneur en protéineset, dans une moindre mesure, de la teneur en lipides, accompagnée d'une accumulation importante des hydrates de carbone.Les résultats sont analysés en tenant compte de la notion de rendement de production de chacun des trois types decomposé.

Morphology, ultrastructure and formation of resting cysts of E. agilis H.J. Carter and E. anabaena Mainx are described. TheSEM micrographs of cysts of E. anabaena and E. agilis are presented for the first time. Information on the neuston film formedby these species is given. An ecological database and list of accompanying species is also included.

Three forms of algal mats : subaerial, emersed and submersed, and their species composition, structure and stratification were studied for a period of twelve months (1996-1997) in an irrigation canal at Al-Kharj, Saudi Arabia. The development of the mats is a continuous process in a gradient fashion from the outlet of a piedmont cave-lake to the end of the canal. The growth maxima occurred at the first weir, which is subject to fast water-current and spray-wetted zone. Mats developed as discrete associations, recognizable by their colour and shape. Hard lithified, soft and floppy, and thin crust types of mats developed in their respective zones and comprised separate biotic communities. Ecological factors such as the nature of the microhabitat, water-chemistry, fluctuation in water-flow, depth of water column, splashing and temperature may have influenced their formation. The emersed mats with Phormidium tenue were predominant from November to February, whereas the subaerial mats above with Tolypothrix distorta adhere to the canal wall as a permanent feature. The subaerial mat has stromatolite-like morphology and is considered a nuisance to the water and drainage maintenance.

The river Nile is the main source of drinking water in Egypt. Nutrient loading coupled with year-round warm weather favor the growth of cyanobacteria, several of which can produce cyanotoxins, especially the potent liver toxins called microcystins. Most microcystin resides inside or closely attached to cyanobacteria cells, and are released into the water column as cells lyse from senescence or chemical treatment. The present study evaluated microcystin levels, as measured by immunoassay (ELISA), in both raw and finished drinking water of the river Nile, during the warm season (May-October), near the drinking water intake for Sohag City, Egypt. The results showed that microcystin content within the cells correlated better with type of microcystin-producing cyanobacteria (Gomphosphaeria, Microcystis, Oscillatoria) rather than chlorophyll a. Microcystin concentration in cell-free water correlated significantly with that measured within the cells, with maximum values being recorded in September (0.4-0.78 µg l-1). Microcystin levels in the finished drinking water were low (56.1- 87.1 ng l-1) and were detected only in May and June. The study indicates that microcystin is present in the raw and finished drinking water at Sohag City but that levels did not exceed the World Health Organization (WHO) drinking water guideline level of 1µg l-1 during May-October 1999.

Une campagne de prélèvements réalisée en 1999, de façon comparable à celle effectuée en 1994, montre que la compositiondes communautés d'oligochètes et de Chironomidés a changé dans cet intervalle de temps en réponse à la baisse des concentrationsen phosphore dans l'eau du Petit Lac, le bassin ouest du Léman (Suisse et France). Les larves de Chironomidés étaient présentesdans 66 % des 159 sites visités en 1999 contre 40 % en 1994 tandis que l'abondance des oligochètes a diminué. De plus,l'abondance relative des taxons indicateurs de conditions oligotrophes (Micropsectra et Spirosperma velutinus) a augmenté en1999. Ces changements indiquent qu'en 1999 la restauration biologique des sédiments profonds se trouve à mi-chemin entrel'état méso-eutrophe des environs de 1980 et l'état oligotrophe d'avant 1950. Cependant, l'ampleur de la restauration n'est pas lamême dans les trois bassins du Petit Lac: elle varie en fonction de l'intensité de la sédimentation organique.

A strictly phylogenetic classification of the supergeneric taxa within the subfamily Timpanoginae includes the Attenellini, n.tribe, consisting of Attenella Edmunds ; the Eurylophellini, n. tribe, consisting of Dentatella Allen, n. stat., and EurylophellaTiensuu ; and the Timpanogini, n. tribe, consisting of Timpanoga Needham and Dannella Edmunds, n. stat. Dentatella danutae McCafferty, n. sp., is described from larvae taken from a stream in southern Québec, Canada. The new species differs from the obviously closely related D. bartoni (Allen) by possibly striking coloration differences as well as numerous slight structural differences.

Le cyclopoïde Mesocyclops ogunnus Onabamiro, 1957 a été identifié dans la retenue de Sidi Salem (Tunisie). C'est la premièreobservation d'une espèce du genre Mesocyclops en Tunisie. Déjà signalé en Algérie, cette nouvelle observation permet deconfirmer le lien entre les aires de répartition africaine intertropicale et euro-asiatique de M. ogunnus (Israël, Ouzbékistan,Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Laos).

Diacyclops cohabitatus Monchenko 1980 known only from the groundwater of the Carpathian mountains in Ukraine is redescribedfrom specimens collected in the Danube alluvial plain, the Lobau, at Vienna. In this area two stygobiont species belongingto the D. languidoides - group co-occur as well. D. cohabitatus can be differentiated from these latter Diacyclops specieson the basis of several morphological traits of antennae, P4 and caudal rami. Its relationship with other members of the D. languidoides- group (e.g. D. languidoides goticus) is discussed.

Le matériel examiné comprend quatre espèces (Psychomyiellodes obscurus Kimmins, P. dentatus Kimmins, P. excavatus Kimmins et P. badalus n. sp.) dont une est nouvelle pour la science et deux sont signalées pour la première fois en Afrique Occidentale : P. dentatus et P. excavatus. L'étude porte sur l'autoécologie et la distribution des espèces sur une rivière de plus de mille km de long, le Mouhoun (Burkina Faso).

A critical comparison of four techniques used to estimate the abundance and biomass of bacteria associated with leaves decaying in a small river in the North-East of Morocco is given. The relative efficiency of the four methods was as follows: homogenisation > direct count > stomacher > sonication. However, each one of these techniques presents its advantages and disadvantages. No technique is perfect by itself.

Streams and rivers on the Vanuatu islands of Espiritu Santo, Pentecost, Éfate and Tanna were sampled for gastropods and thephysical and chemical characteristics of the water were investigated between 25/11/95 and 13/12/95. Twenty three species of neritidand forteen of thiarid prosobranch gastropods were found, together with the pulmonate Physastra nasuta and an opisthobranchspecies Strubellia. Six thiarid, two Clithon and one Neritina species, which are present in the Solomon Islands and SouthEast Asia, but which are absent further south on New Caledonia and the Fiji islands, were found on the Vanuatu islands. Onthe other hand, Septaria bougainvillei and Clithon pritchardi, which are present on the Fiji islands and New Caledonia, werefound no further north than the southern Vanuatu island of Tanna. This suggests that Vanuatu is a transition zone for both northernand southern freshwater snails. Éfate had many more species (26) than the other islands (16-19-. This was partly explainedby its central geographical position and the higher ion content of its streams.

As part of a survey of the rotifer fauna of Burundi, Lecanidae from Kashira and the floodplain of the river Rusizi in Northwest Burundi are reported. Thirty-four species of Lecane were found. Twenty-five of them are new to Burundi, raising the total Burundian Lecane record to thirty-five. Three species, Lecane aeganea Harring, 1914, L. eswari Dhanapathi, 1976 and L. subulata (Harring & Myers, 1926) are new to the African fauna, the presence of L. baimaii Sanoamuang & Savatenalinton, 1999 in Africa is confirmed. The fauna consists mainly of cosmopolitan and tropicopolitan taxa, accompanied by several Eastern Hemisphere taxa, and one each of pantropical, endemic and arctic-temperate taxa. The latter, occurring in a high-altitude locality, may be a glacial relict.

A new genus, Coffmania in the tribe Pentaneurini of the subfamily Tanypodinae with two new species from Darjeeling-Sikkim Himalayas in India is described and illustrated with male and female imagines, pupa and larva. Systematics of the genus and ecology of the species have also been discussed.

The seventh in a series on the Leptophlebiidae (Ephemeroptera) of New Caledonia, this papers treats three new genera(Paraluma, Oumas, and Amoa) and 12 new species. For Paraluma gen.n., the type species P. cancellata sp.n., P. triangularissp.n., P. gilva sp.n. and P. minuta sp.n. are described from male and female imagos and nymphs, P. pulla sp.n. from male imagosand nymphs, and P. maculata sp.n. from male and female imagos. For Amoa gen.n., the type species A. fronini sp.n., A. subsolanosp.n. and A. orthogonia sp.n. are described from male and female imagos and nymphs, A. cressonensis sp.n. from nymphsonly and A. hebes sp.n. from the male imago only. Oumas orbis gen.n. sp.n. is described from male and female imagos andnymphs.

The 138 species and subspecies of Ephemeroptera now known to occur in Mexico, of which 35, approximately 25 %, areendemic, are listed along with distributional annotations. New Mexican records are included for Americabaetis lugoi Waltz &McCafferty, Baetodes velmae Cohen & Allen, Drunella coloradensis (Dodds), Farrodes otiesa Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty,Plauditus virilis (McDunnough), Tricorythodes fictus Traver, T. texanus Traver, and Varipes lasiobrachius Lugo-Ortiz &McCafferty, the latter of which also constitutes a new continental record for the genus Varipes Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty inNorth America. Traverella sallei (Navás), n. comb., is transferred from the genus Thraulus.

Water chemistry and macroinvertebrates of four high mountain lakes (alt. 1657-1784 m) were investigated. The lakes areultraoligotrophic with naturally slightly acidic water. In three lakes these water level changed substantially during the year while in one it remained constant. Moreover, trophic status was higher in one than in the other three. Oligochaeta and Chironomidae dominated the invertebrate fauna of all lakes. Benthic faunal composition depended mainly on ecological factors such as substrate, trophic status, and hydroperiod. It appears that anthropogenic acidification has so far not affected faunal composition.

L'étude de la faune madicole est fort peu avancée aux tropiques. En Guadeloupe, l'étude d'un vaste habitat madicole typique dans le massif de la Soufrière a été entreprise. La faune comporte un nombre d'éléments eumadicoles ou au moins madicophiles : Hydracariens, Diptères, et surtout Trichoptères. Parmi les 10 espèces de Trichoptères appartenant à ces catégories, plusieurs sont soit des nouveautés pour la faune de la Guadeloupe, soit représentées par des [math] pas encore décrites au niveau de l'espèce pour être nommées ; le cas le plus remarquable est celui de la stricte coexistence de deux espèces de Byrsopteryx, dont une décrite comme nouvelle, et qui se distinguent par la coloration des ailes et par la structure des tergites abdominaux, leurs genitalia [math] semblant être identiques. Les Trichoptères de 4 cours d'eau auparavant non échantillonnés et appartenant à des zones différentes ont été collectés à la lumière UV, ce qui permet certaines comparaisons. La description de deux espèces endémiques pour la Guadeloupe est complétée. 47 espèces de Trichoptères sont actuellement connues de Guadeloupe.

We investigated the abundance, diversity and community structure of mayflies (Ephemeroptera), stoneflies (Plecoptera) andblackflies (Diptera : Simuliidae) in the Sébaou basin (Algeria). Fifty-five species were collected (i.e. 22 mayflies, 14 stonefliesand 19 blackflies species) in 18 sampling sites located in both main streams and tributaries of the Sébaou river (Great Kabylie,North Algeria). Analysis of species diversity of the three considered taxa showed an altitudinal gradient with maximal diversityin the piedmont and low altitude mountain areas (from 200 to 500 m), which provided the most heterogeneous habitats to thebenthic fauna. In contrast, the low diversity of the lowland sites was due to high water temperatures, reduced summer dischargeand anthropogenic disturbances. In the same way, the low diversity of the high mountain areas can be attributed either to lowwater temperatures or high fluctuation in daily temperature. Three species assemblage groups are revealed, the first two are relatedto an upstream-downstream gradient, with headwater sites characterised by stoneflies species and middle stream sites by ahigh mayfly and blackfy diversity and abundance. The third group was identified as spring sites characterised by a low abundanceand occurrence of stonefly species.Both altitudinal species diversity gradient and species assemblage of the Sébaou wadi were different from European and temperateareas, revealing that the accentuated North African Mediterranean climate could induce changes to both species and communitystructure. These results provide insights to the influence of some environmental features on aquatic insect species distributionand community structure in North African streams.

Des simulies ont été récoltées entre 1985 et 1991 dans les principaux réseaux hydrographiques du Haut Atlas. Les stades préimaginauxdes simulies représentent un élément important de la faune benthique de ces cours d'eau. Des larves et des nymphesont été récoltées dans 54 stations (entre 450 m et 3800 m d'altitude) qui regroupent une grande variété d'eaux courantes, depuisles ruisselets jusqu'aux grandes rivières.La communauté des simulies du Haut Atlas compte 24 espèces ; six sont nouvelles pour la science. Cinq espèces ont été décritesprécédemment. La description de Simulium (Eusimulium) mellah Giudicelli & Bouzidi n. sp. est donnée dans le présent travail.Le nombre d'espèces de simulies connues actuellement du Haut Atlas est remarquablement élevé, comparé à celui d'autres régionsd'Europe et du bassin méditerranéen ; à l'inverse, on note une relative pauvreté en espèces dans les autres groupes d'invertébrésvivant dans les eaux courantes de ce massif.Beaucoup d'espèces sont communes avec la faune des simulies de l'Europe occidentale et surtout de l'Europe méditerranéenne.La faune des simulies du Haut Atlas est nettement paléarctique, dominée par des éléments à distribution ouest-méditerranéenneet circumméditerranéenne ; elle comprend aussi quelques éléments africains. Quatre espèces sont endémiques, cantonnéesdans les torrents et les sources de haute altitude.Des informations sur la biogéographie, l'écologie et la répartition des espèces sont fournies.Les affinités et les relations écologiques entre 23 espèces et 50 stations ont été déterminées par une analyse factorielle des correspondances.Cinq groupements d'espèces et de stations ont été reconnus : un premier groupement caractérise les cours d'eaufroids (torrents et sources) aux altitudes supérieures (entre 2660 et 3200 m) ; les deuxième et troisième groupements correspondentau crénal et aux secteurs initiaux du rhithral (entre 1600 et 2700 m) et à une communauté d'espèces sténothermes d'eau froide; le quatrième groupement réunit les espèces eurythermes à large répartition dans les réseaux hydrographiques et il correspondaux rivières de montagne (hypo-métarhithral) entre 1200 et 2600 m d'altitude ; le cinquième groupement contient les espècesthermophiles et potamophiles qui habitent le cours inférieur des rivières (entre 600 et 1600 m).Une analyse factorielle des correspondances a été réalisée sur des prélèvements mensuels d'invertébrés récoltés de déc. 1985à déc. 1986 dans les différents microhabitats, définis par la combinaison courant-substrat, de deux secteurs épipotamiques. Lepremier axe factoriel (F1) représente une échelle de vitesse de courant. Les stades aquatiques des 7 espèces de Simulies présentesse disposent le long de cet axe en fonction de leur rhéopréférendum.
