The application of ultrasonics to the evaluation of live cattle has been carried out in bull performance testing for several years. The machine used for this was the Scanogram. The fact that this machine is no longer being produced and the emergence of several new machines has prompted this trial to evaluate seven ultrasonic machines.

A total of 49 bulls, 27 Limousin x Friesian and 22 Charolais x Friesian, were evaluated and slaughtered in four batches of approximately equal size, over four weeks. Each batch was of one breed.

Age, live weight at evaluation and subjective assessments of fatness and conformation were recorded together with fat and muscle measurements by the Delphi (Delphi Instruments Ltd, New Zealand), Meritronics (Merit, Lowson and French, England), Scanogram (Ithaco Incorporated, USA), Vetscan (Company no longer in existence), Kaijo Denki (Medata Systems Ltd, England), Velocity of Sound (Prototype developed at IFR-Bristol, England) and Warren (Prototype developed by J Warren) ultrasonic machines.

In the past selection programmes for pigs have been based on measurements from individually housed animals. The manual weighing of food and refusals to obtain information on individual food intake is labour-consuming, and the housing method different to that found on most commercial farms where growing pigs are housed in groups. The selection of pigs in one environment to be kept in another often leads to a discrepancy between performance results achieved by pig breeders and those obtained in a commercial situation (Merks, 1989).

One hundred and thirty crossbred gilts (Yorkshire × Duroc × Hampshire) were exposed to either natural (40 lux) or supplemental lighting (700 lux) beginning at 8 weeks of age. Gilts received supplemental lighting from 40-W flourescent bulbs from 05·15 to 09·00 h and 16·30 to 20·15 h from 9 September to 22 April. At 4 months of age, all gilts were exposed daily for 15 min to mature boars five times weekly. Twelve gilts from each group were slaughtered at 4, 5, 6 and 7 months of age. All gilts were bled from indwelling cannulas at 20-min intervals for 4 h the day preceding slaughter. In addition, blood samples were drawn weekly from 17 gilts in each group from 7 to 9 months of age and analysed for progesterone to determine age of puberty. Twelve of 17 gilts that received supplemental lighting reached puberty at 228 (s.e. 11) days of age whereas 11 of 16 gilts that received natural lighting reached puberty at 252 (s.e. 7) days of age (P = 0·07). No significant differences occurred in anterior pituitary gland weight or pituitary concentration of LH, mean concentrations of serum LH or number of LH secretory spikes between natural and supplemental-lighted gilts at each month (all P > 005). Concentration of oestradiol-17β and progesterone in follicular fluid was similar between treatment groups within months and follicular size (P > 0·05). Content of GnRH in the stalk-median eminence, preoptic area and hypothalamus proper were also similar between treatment groups (P > 0·05). In summary, supplemental lighting reduced the age of puberty in gilts without a detectable change in pituitary, hypothalamic or ovarian parameters.

Growing pigs were given diets based on barley (whole or milled), which was either untreated or sprayed with an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (270 g sodium hydroxide per kg water) to give 33·8 g sodium hydroxide per kg dry matter. The barley grain was treated with sodium hydroxide while in the whole state. A total of 48 pigs penned individually were given the diets on a restricted scale of feeding from an initial weight of 31·6 kg until slaughter at 81·7 kg live weight. In a metabolism study, eight boars were subjected to the same experimental treatments in two identical 4 × 4 balanced change-over experiments.

The diet containing untreated milled barley gave significantly faster live-weight gain and lower food conversion ratio than the other three diets (P < 0·001). Food conversion ratios were similar for untreated whole barley and sodium hydroxide-treated barley, whether this was whole or milled. Killingout proportion was similar for untreated and treated milled barley but was significantly lower when the diet contained untreated or treated whole barley.

Milling significantly increased the digestibility of energy and nitrogen. Treatment with sodium hydroxide improved the digestibility of energy in the diet with whole barley but not in the diet with milled barley. With both whole and milled barley, treatment with sodium hydroxide increased the digestibility of crude fibre (P < 0·05) but with ground barley the digestibility and retention of nitrogen were reduced considerably by treatment with sodium hydroxide.

It is concluded that treatment of barley with sodium hydroxide did not improve the nutritive value of either milled or whole grain, that it reduced the digestibility of nitrogen and that it severely depressed the utilization of digested energy for growth.

By fitting a range of numerical values to a model, genetic responses from performance testing male pigs (boars) were examined in a population in which pig farms either conduct their own tests or send boars to a central station for testing. Where selection intensities are the same for station and farm tests the former almost always has an advantage over the latter. Factors which lead to this advantage are genetic differences between farms, genetic sampling within farms and limitations on the accuracy of performance measurement in farm tests. In a large station test response in a trait of 50% heritability is expected to be 15% greater than in tests comprising boars from 10 effective parents on farms whose average genotype contributes 5% of the total genetic variation and whose environmental variation is 25% greater than in the station. In populations with limited station testing space available, farm tests should be able to compensate for their lower efficiency by increasing selection intensities.

On pig farms, a high proportion of the cost of production comes from feed costs. However, the use of alternative ingredients such as legume seeds may help to reduce this cost. In fact, legume seeds are an important source of essential amino acids (EAA) and can therefore be an alternative to oilseed meals. However, the accurate use of these legume seeds requires a precise knowledge of the standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of EAA, which may vary depending on its botanical variety. A meta-analysis was performed on a database compiling data from 41 studies published between 1981 and 2013 and 178 dietary treatments. Models of prediction of the SID of EAA as well as the dietary concentration of digestible standardized EAA (dEAA) were obtained, based on the chemical composition of ingredients reported in the publications. The effect of the type of legume seeds (faba bean, lupin, pea and soya bean), surgical procedures (T-cannula, re-entrant cannulas, post valve T-cannulas and ileo-rectal anastomosis), and BW of pigs (BW⩽25 kg BW>25 kg) were also tested in each model. Results showed that dietary CP and crude fibre (CF) were, respectively, the best predictors of each EAA SID for faba bean, lupin and pea (R2=0.42 to 0.89) and soya bean (R2=0.32 to 0.77). For the dEAA content, the best prediction models included dietary CP and ADF for faba bean, lupin and pea and soya bean, respectively, with R2 ranging from 0.66 to 0.98. Models developed in this study allow predicting the digestibility of EAA in these alternatives feedstuffs.

Two randomized-block experiments were carried out to examine the relative value of wheat and barley as supplements to grass silage for finishing beef cattle. In each experiment unwilted, formic acid-treated silage was offered ad libitum and supplemented with 500 g soya-bean meal and 50 g minerals and vitamins to 44 12-month-old bulls for 157 and 172 days in experiments 1 and 2 respectively. Twelve of the animals also received 2·5 kg rolled spring barley (LB), 12 received 4·0 kg barley (HB) and 20 received 3·25 kg rolled wheat (W). For experiments 1 and 2 respectively the barley contained 796 and 787 g dry matter (DM) per kg; 118 and 105 g crude protein (CP) per kg DM; 47 and 57 g crude fibre per kg DM; the wheat contained 845 and 800 g DM per kg; 112 and 116 g CP per kg DM; 23 and 25 g crude fibre per kg DM; and the silages contained 190 and 177 g DM per kg; 153 and 176 g CP per kg DM; 80 and 104 g ammonia-nitrogen per kg total nitrogen. On average over the two experiments, for treatments LB, HB and W respectively, silage DM intakes were 5·4, 4·7 (s.e. 0·14) and 4·9 (s.e. 0·11) kg/day; total DM intakes 7·9, 8·3 (s.e. 0·14) and 8·1 (s.e. 0·11) kg/day; metabolizable energy intakes 91·4, 97·8 and 94·2 MJ/day; live-weight gains 1·04,1·19 (s.e. 0·029) and 1·10 (s.e. 0·023) kg/day and carcass gams 0·65, 0·77 (s.e. 0·017) and 0·70 (s.e. 0·013) kg/day. It is concluded that the feeding value of wheat was proportionately 0·98 of that of barley for finishing beef cattle when given as a supplement to grass silage, and that the type of cereal offered did not affect silage intake or carcass composition.

Estimates of genetic parameters were obtained for weight, hip height, heart girth and shoulder to pin length measurements on Thai swamp buffalo, recorded at birth and weaning. Direct heritability estimates were 0·26 for weights at both ages and were low for skeletal measurements, ranging from 0·11 to 0·19. Low values could, in part at least, be caused by inaccuracies in recording. All traits were subject to maternal effects, permanent environmental maternal effects on traits recorded at weaning explaining proportionately up to 0·14 of the total variation. Estimates of genetic (direct and maternal) and permanent environmental correlations between traits recorded at the same time were high throughout, ranging from 0·83 to 0·97 for additive genetic effects and being close to unity otherwise. Except for heart girth measured at weaning, there appeared to be comparatively little genetic association between traits recorded at different times, direct additive correlation estimates ranging from 0·18 to 0·55 in contrast to estimates of 0·38 to 0·65 for correlations with heart girth at weaning.

Crossbred gilts were offered rapeseed press cake (RSP) as follows: control (no RSP in diet during growth/ pregnancy/lactation), M-RSP (medium RSP levels: 100/50/100 g/kg RSP) and H-RSP (high RSP levels: 150/80/ 150 g/kg RSP). Plasma concentrations of free thyroxine (FT4), tri-iodothyronine (T3), luteinizing hormone (LH), prolactin (PRL), progesterone (P4) and androstenedione (A4), weights of thyroid gland, ovaries and uterus, length of uterine horns, and number of corpora lutea (CL) were measured in gilts during the mid-luteal phase of their first oestrous cycle. Serum concentrations of FT4, T3, LH and PRL, weights of thyroids, ovaries, uteri, adrenals, kidneys, liver and spleen were measured in female piglets on 2nd and 28th day of lactation. RSP diets, affected thyroid weights, number of CL, uterine horn length, mean concentrations of plasma FT4, T3, PRL, and P4 in gilts. Changes of weights of ovaries in 2-day-old piglets and weights of uterus, adrenal gland and kidneys in 28-day-old piglets from RSP groups were observed.

The data relating to twenty single location trials, involving the progeny of seven sires from one variety mated with random females from another, have been analysed to obtain estimates of sire × location (genotype–environment) interaction for egg production, 23- and 64-week body weights and 32-and 45-week egg weights. In no case was a significant interaction found, indicating genetic correlations not significantly different from unity.

The between- and within-sire components of variance have been calculated for each trait on each location separately. The regressions of these components on the mean levels at the locations have been obtained. Though low and non-significant, they tend to support the use of those locations giving maximum expression of a trait for comparisons involving that trait.

The physiology of indigenous West African cattle has not been investigated thoroughly. The ability of native cattle to survive on dietary regimes drastically deficient by standards based on requirements of temperate zone cattle, indicates an adaptability suggestive of a physiology differing from that of temperate zone cattle. The study reported herein was conducted to provide information on one aspect of this problem; namely the haemoglobin levels of indigenous cattle, as influenced by breed, season of year, growth characteristics and nutrient intake.

The growth of pigs kept continuously or intermittently in metabolism cages was compared with that of animals penned in groups. The ten continuously caged grew more slowly and contained more fat at slaughter than their penned littermates.

The information stored in animal feed databases is highly variable, in terms of both provenance and quality; therefore, data pre-processing is essential to ensure reliable results. Yet, pre-processing at best tends to be unsystematic; at worst, it may even be wholly ignored. This paper sought to develop a systematic approach to the various stages involved in pre-processing to improve feed database outputs. The database used contained analytical and nutritional data on roughly 20 000 alfalfa samples. A range of techniques were examined for integrating data from different sources, for detecting duplicates and, particularly, for detecting outliers. Special attention was paid to the comparison of univariate and multivariate solutions. Major issues relating to the heterogeneous nature of data contained in this database were explored, the observed outliers were characterized and ad hoc routines were designed for error control. Finally, a heuristic diagram was designed to systematize the various aspects involved in the detection and management of outliers and errors.

Eighteen male and 18 female weaned rabbits were randomly allocated to two diets formulated to give energy concentrations of 8 (LE) and 10 (HE) MJ metabolizable energy per kg dry matter and three target slaughter weights (1·5, 2·25 and 3·0 kg live weight) to give a 2 × 2 × 3 factorial design with three replicates. Voluntary food intake and live-weight gain were monitored and the carcasses chemically analysed. The metabolizable energy concentrations of the diets were determined by balance and found to be 9·87 and 6·84 MJ/kg dry matter for diets HE and LE respectively.

Rabbits fed the LE diet consumed more dry matter (P < 0·001) and metabolizable energy (P < 0·01) in total, but grew more slowly than those fed the HE diet (P < 0·001). A diet × slaughter weight interaction occurred (P < 0·01); rabbits of the LE–3 kg treatment took longer to reach target weight as a result of a flattening of their growth curve.

Rabbits fed the LE diet had lower killing-out proportions (P < 0·05), heavier gut weights (P < 0·05) and gut contents (P < 0·05), but lighter livers than those fed the HE diet. Killing-out proportion progressively increased with increasing slaughter weight. External offal weight as a proportion of live weight tended to increase while internal offal weight as a proportion of live weight tended to decrease as slaughter weight increased. The carcasses of rabbits slaughtered at 3 kg had lower moisture contents (P < 0·001), greater fat contents (P < 0·001) and lower ash contents (P < 0·05) than other slaughter treatments. A significant diet × slaughter weight interaction occurred in fat content, with rabbits of the LE–3 kg treatment having proportionally more fat. With age at slaughter as a covariate, rabbits fed the HE diet had proportionally more fat (P < 0·05).

Least squares analyses were undertaken on 1519 gestation lengths of cows mated to Beef Shorthorn, Hereford, Charolais, German Simmental or British Friesian bulls. Gestation length was influenced largely by breed of sireand byindividual sires within breeds. Approximately 100 calvings are required to give a mean value with a standard error of 0·50 day. Heritability of gestation length was estimated to be 0·24±0·05. It is recommended that Artificial Insemination organizations survey and publish the mean gestation lengths of their bulls and that dairy farmers modify, where necessary, pre-partum feeding in the light of this information.

The efficiency of part lactation test day (TD) records in first parity for the genetic evaluation of bulls and cows using a random regression model (RRM) and a fixed regression model (FRM) was studied, modelling the random and fixed lactation curves by Legendre polynomials. The data set consisted of 9 242 783 TD records for first lactation milk yield of 1 134 042 Holstein Friesian heifers. The efficiency of both models with part lactation TD records was examined by comparing predicted transmitting abilities (PTAs) for 305-day milk yield for 114 bulls and their 4697 daughters, from analyses where the maximum number of TD records of these daughters was restricted to the initial 2, 4 or 6 TDs with those estimated from 10 TDs. The correlations of PTAs estimated from 2, 4 or 6 TDs with those from 10 TDs computed for cows and bulls within each model were very similar. A rank correlation of 0·91 (0·92 FRM) was obtained for cows between PTAs based on 2 TDs and those from 10 TDs. The correlation increased to 0·96 with 4 TDs and 0·98 with 6 TDs. For bulls, correlations between PTAs estimated from 4 or 6 TDs with those estimated from 10 TDs were high at 0·98 and 0·99 respectively. With 2 TDs, the correlation was 0·95. The average under-prediction of PTAs with 2, 4 or 6 TDs relative to 10 TDs was generally higher and more variable with a FRM compared with a RRM for highly persistent cows and bulls. A similar trend was observed for mean over-prediction of PTAs, except for the initial predictions based on 2 TDs when the RRM gave a higher mean over-prediction for bulls and their daughters with low persistency but high initial TD records. The range of over and under-predictions were large (up to 200 kg milk) for some bulls when only 2 TDs were included in both models. A moderate correlation of 0·64 was obtained between persistency evaluations estimated from 10 TDs with those estimated from 2 TDs. The correlation increased to 0·71 with 4 TDs included and 0·85 with 6 TDs. The moderately high correlation between 6 TDs and 10 TDs of 0·85 was unexpected given the high correlation of 0·99 between PTAs for yield estimated from 6TDs with those estimated from 10 TDs.

Energy intake and nitrogen balance studies have been conducted on 12 lambs fed ad libitum on four all-concentrate diets of equal crude-protein content in an experiment of latin square design. Each diet contained one cereal, either barley or oats and one protein supplement, either white-fish meal or soya bean meal.

Protein supplements had no influence on energy intake, but intake was significantly higher when the lambs were given barley rather than oat diets.

There were highly significant differences in the degree of utilization of digested nitrogen between diets containing fish meal and soya bean meal, and between diets containing barley and oats.

The energy: nitrogen ratio of urine was inversely related to the proportion of urinary nitrogen present as urea and directly related to the degree of utilization of digested nitrogen.

The potential of antibodies raised against insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) as a treatment to enhance the anabolic actions of IGF-1 has been demonstrated in both rodent and ruminant models. We investigated whether treatment of genetically normal rats with anti-IGF-1 immunoglobulin (Ig, raised in cattle) would enhance growth and if anti-IGF-1 Ig treatment would ameliorate live-weight loss in genetically normal rats offered a severely protein-restricted diet. Scatchard analysis was used to characterise ammonium sulphate precipitated bovine anti-IGF-1 Ig. Anti-IGF-1 Ig binding to 125I-IGF-1 yielded an almost linear Scatchard plot, with a Hill co-efficient of 0.951 ± 0.012, indicating a single class of IGF-1 binding sites. The affinity of anti-IGF-1 Ig for IGF-1 was 2.14 ± 0.66 × 109 l/mol. The non-immune Ig preparation did not bind IGF-1. Rats were offered either a diet with a normal protein level (20%) or protein restricted (4% protein), and each dietary group was further treated with twice-daily i.p. injections of either diluent phosphate buffered saline, non-immune Ig or anti-IGF-1 Ig. Dietary protein level had a significant effect on live-weight gain, but there was no effect of non-immune Ig or anti-IGF-1 Ig on live-weight gain. Treatment with anti-IGF-1 Ig prevented the significant depression of cumulative dietary intake observed in diluent, and non-immune Ig treated groups offered the 4% protein diet. The cumulative dietary intake of the anti-IGF-1 Ig treated, 4% dietary protein group did not differ significantly from those of the groups offered the 20% protein diet. In addition, within the 4% dietary protein group, rats treated with non-immune Ig exhibited a cumulative feed intake that was intermediate between that of the diluent treated and anti-IGF-1 Ig treated groups (P < 0.05). Size exclusion chromatography was used to characterise in vitro125I-IGF-1 binding in end-point plasma from each treatment group. In comparison to control groups, anti-IGF-1 Ig treatment resulted in substantially increased 125I-IGF-1 binding in the 30 to 40 kDa region and a concomitant reduction in elution of free 125I-IGF-1. Protein restriction markedly depressed IGF-1 binding at ∼150 kDa in the plasma of diluent and non-immune Ig treated groups. Anti-IGF-1 Ig treatment was effective in preventing this decrease in ∼150 kDa binding. Thus, anti-IGF-1 Ig appears to have a beneficial effect on dietary intake in protein-restricted rats, which is associated with induced changes in IGF-1 binding profiles in plasma.

Experiments were conducted to observe the taste responses of male and female calves to various levels of sodium salts, chloride solutions, and trace minerals. Animals were penned individually and given a completely pelleted ration ad libitum. Trace mineralized salt was freely available.

Using water as a basis for determination, a non-discrimination zone was established. This zone represented an intake ranging from 63 to 37%. Preference threshold was set at 80% of intake, while the rejection threshold was set at 20% of intake. Responses were determined by expressing the intake of the test solution as a percentage of the total intake during the test period. Responses at a given chemical concentration were measured during two 8-hr periods.

Taste response observations were made on the following: 0·02, 0·08, 0·32 or 1·25% sodium chloride (NaCl), sodium sulphate (Na2SO4), sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), sodium carbonate, monobasic sodium phosphate (NaH2PO4), dibasic sodium phosphate (Na2HPO4), ammonium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, and manganese chloride. In addition, observations were made when 0·02, 0·08, 0·32 or 1·25% NaHCO3, Na2SO4, or Na2HPO4 were offered in opposition to equal concentrations of NaCl. The responses to 5, 10, 20, 40 and 60 p.p.m. concentrations of cupric chloride, zinc chloride, molybdenum trioxide and cobaltous chloride were observed also.

Sibs of five to 11 twin pairs each of five breeds were either slaughtered as veal or as yearling bulls. Highly significant breed differences were evident in the carcass tissue proportions which could be explained on the basis of differences in the physiology of dairy and dual-purpose animals, the former depositing more fat and more bone than dual-purpose breeds. Among the dual-purpose breeds the carcasses of the Pinzgauer (Pi) tended to rank between the carcasses of the Fleckvieh (FV), Braunvieh (BV), Grauvieh (GV) and those of the Friesian (Fr).

The dual-purpose breeds FV, BV, GV had more meat in the hindquarter and in the shoulder than the FR while these in turn had more meat in the brisket and in the flank and shank muscles. Again the Pi group tended to rank between the aforementioned groups.

Within breeds, large differences between twin pairs indicated high heritabilities for carcass tissue proportions and ratios. The heritability of commercial cut proportions was fairly high but the genetic variance was small, the genetic coefficient of variation being less than 0-02. The different degrees of sexual maturity and of carcass maturity also caused differences in the distribution of meat in the carcasses of young male animals.

Significant mean squares for interactions between treatments and breeds, and genetic correlations of less than unity between performance of twin genotypes in veal and in bulls, indicated age and/or rearing system by genotype interactions between and within breeds for various slaughter traits.

Phenotypic correlations between various slaughter traits were low except where part-whole relationships were involved. It is suggested that slaughter at comparable maturity in the respective treatments was the cause of the weak connection between the traits.
