At birth, the Barki lambs used in this experiment were randomly allocated to three groups which numbered 133, 126 and 154 lambs of both sexes weaned at the ages of 10 weeks (Group I), 12 weeks (Group II) and 16 weeks (Group III) respectively.

The most pronounced differences between the three groups of lambs in their body weights took place at the age from 4 to 6 months. Group II lambs performed as well as or even slightly better than the other two groups, which leads to the conclusion that as far as the body weight of lambs is concerned there is no need to extend their suckling period more than 12 weeks.

The three groups of lambs varied little in their mortality rates from 2·5 to 12 months of age.

The incidence of hypomagnesaemic tetany in cattle and sheep can be reduced considerably by increasing the dietary intake of magnesium (Allcroft, R., 1954; Allcroft, W. M., 1947; Bartlett et al., 1954; Stewart, 1954) and the commonest method of supplementing the ration is to provide a mineral mixture containing magnesium oxide. While the feeding of these mineral supplements to animals wintered indoors is relatively straightforward, ensuring that animals grazing on hill and marginal land will obtain a regular supply of the mineral raises a problem. Where animals are receiving silage in addition to natural grazings during the winter, the inclusion of a magnesium compound in the grass at the time of ensiling is one method of increasing the magnesium content of the diet. The oxide and carbonate of magnesium are probably the safest compounds for feeding to stock, but unfortunately these are likely to have an adverse effect on the preservation, resulting in inferior silage. Experiments carried out in small silo units at Boghall Farm proved this to be the case (E.E.S.C.A. Ann. Rep. 1955). Magnesium sulphate is likely to have little effect upon the preservation of silage, and although this compound is not ideally suitable as a magnesium supplement owing to its laxative properties, it was decided to investigate the value of using it in restricted quantity and intimately mixed with the silage, as a suitable means of preventing hypo-magnesaemia when fed during the winter to a herd of 18 outwintered Galloway cows.

Four diets, barley/proprietary protein concentrate (B/PC), barley/maize gluten (B/MG), barley/rapeseed meal (B/RSM) and wheat/'rapeseed meal (W/RSM) were formulated to contain 165 g crude protein and 13·0 MJ metabolizable energy per kg dry matter. In experiment 1, all four diets were offered ad libitum to Charolais × Friesian bulls from 187 kg live weight to slaughter at about 488 kg live weight. In experiment 2, the B/PC and B/RSM were offered ad libitum to Charolais × (Hereford × Friesian) bulls from 222 kg live weight to slaughter at about 491 kg live weight. There were no significant differences between treatments in daily live-weight gain, percentage fat and lean in the live animal, slaughter weight or days on experiment in either experiment. In experiment 1, the carcasses from bulls given B/PC were 14 kg heavier than carcasses from bulls given W/RSM (P<0·05), but only 10 and 7 kg heavier than from bulls given B/MG and B/RSM respectively (P<0·05). The killing-out proportion of bulls given B/PC was significantly greater (P<0·05) than bulls given B/RSM. In experiment 2, carcass weights were similar but the killing-out proportion of bulls given B/PC were again greater (P < 0·001). It is concluded that B/MG and B/RSM were as effective as B/PC as finishing diets and that wheat can be successfully substituted for barley, when offered with rapeseed meal.

Two pairs of uniformly treated identical twins were weighed four times daily for 16 days. In addition, daily growth rate was analysed for 10 pairs of identical twins kept on high and low planes of nutrition over a 16-week period.

Identical twins fluctuated in body weight from hour to hour and day to day in a significantly more similar manner than did unrelated animals. The greater similarity found when all animals were uniformly treated still persisted when identical twins were placed on different planes of nutrition.

The initial work of Brooks and Cole (1970), which showed that a mature boar advances the onset of puberty in gilts, has become known as the ‘boar effect’, and this phenomenon has now been confirmed in numerous studies as reviewed by Hughes (1982), and Kirkwood and Hughes (1982).

Differential gene expression analyses typically focus on departures across mathematical expectations (i.e. mean) from two or more groups of microarrays, without considering alternative patterns of departure. Nevertheless, recent studies in humans and great apes have suggested that differential gene expression could also be characterized in terms of heterogeneous dispersion patterns. This must be viewed as a very interesting genetic phenomenon clearly linked to the regulation mechanisms of gene transcription. Unfortunately, we completely lack information about the incidence and relevance of dispersion-specific differential gene expression in livestock species, although a specific Bayes factor (BF) for testing this kind of differential gene expression (i.e. within-probe heteroskedasticity) has been recently developed. Within this context, our main objective was to characterize the incidence of dispersion-specific differential gene expression in pigs and, if possible, providing the first evidence of this phenomenon in a livestock species. We evaluated dispersion-specific differential gene expression on ovary, uterus and hypophysis samples from 22 F2 Iberian × Meishan sows, where a total of 15 252 probes were interrogated. For each tissue, heteroskedasticity of probe-specific residual variances was evaluated by three pairwise comparisons involving three physiological stages, that is, heat, 15 days of pregnancy and 45 days of pregnancy. Between 2.9% and 37.4% of the analyzed probes provided statistical evidence of within-tissue across-physiological stages dispersion-specific differential gene expression (BF >1), and between 0.1% and 3.0% of them reported decisive evidence (BF >100). It is important to highlight that <8% of the heteroskedastic probes were also linked to differential gene expression in terms of departures among the probe-specific mathematical expectation of each physiological stage. This discarded the disturbance of scale effects in a high percentage of probes and suggested that probe-specific heteroskedasticity must be viewed as an independent phenomenon within the context of differential gene expression. As a whole, our results report a remarkable incidence of dispersion-specific differential gene expression across the whole genome of the pig, establishing a very interesting starting point for further studies focused on deciphering the genetic mechanisms underlying heteroskedasticity.

Pseudorabies has become endemic and represents a widespread problem for pig production in the world, causing great economic losses associated with reproductive failure and neonatal mortality in the pig industry. Most diseases are the results of mutations of functional genes. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from the coding regions of the mediators of pro-inflammatory responses or other candidate genes in pigs could indicate their potential involvement in susceptibility or resistance to PrV (pseudorabies virus) infection. There have been no previous association studies with candidate host genes that may influence PrV phenotypic traits. In order to perform association studies to identify genes contributing to PrV phenotypes, the genotypes of five SNPs from four genes (IL10, CXCL12, BAT2 and EHMT2) were determined for 178 sow samples using a high throughput microarray-based methodology. PrV antibodies were tested by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to determine whether there was an association between antibody levels and particular genotypes. The association between SNP genotypes and the PrV antibody levels were analysed using the Duncan method of one-way ANOVA procedure using the SAS (Statistical Analysis Systems) software package. The results showed that the glycoprotein E-ELISA antibody level of pigs with genotypes 11(AA) and 12(AG) was significantly higher than in pigs with genotype 22(GG) (P < 0.05) of SNP in the gene EHMT2-SNP2. The SNP of EHMT2 may be an effective potential tool to identify susceptible and resistant animals when used in conjunction with traditional selection methods.

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the requirement for dietary crude protein (CP) in growing blue-breasted quail (BBQ). In Experiment 1, 300 1-day-old quails were randomly assigned to 10 groups according to a 2 × 5 factorial arrangement of treatments with two metabolisable energy (ME) levels (12.13 and 13.39 MJ/kg) and five CP concentrations (160, 190, 220, 250 and 280 g/kg) for 8 weeks. In Experiment 2, 300 1-day-old quails were subjected to a different factorial arrangement of treatments with two ME levels (11.51 and 12.13 MJ/kg) and five CP concentrations (210, 220, 230, 240 and 250 g/kg) for 28 days. Experiment 1 revealed that an interaction existed in weight gain between ME and CP levels in weeks 1 to 4. In both ME groups, quails receiving CP of 160 g/kg showed the least weight gains (P < 0.05). No differences (P > 0.05) existed in weight gain between the ME groups in which quails ingested CP of 250 and 280 g/kg, whereas quails consuming CP of 220 g/kg with an ME of 13.39 MJ/kg had smaller weight gain than did those ingesting higher CP concentrations (P < 0.05). Of main effects for weeks 1–4, quails treated with an ME of 12.13 MJ/kg consumed more feed than did those receiving another ME level, whereas quails in both ME treatments showed similar feed efficiencies. For weeks 5 to 8, no difference (P > 0.05) in weight gain, feed intake and feed efficiency was seen regardless of ME levels, and no interaction existed between ME and CP levels. In Experiment 2, the best weight gain and feed efficiency were achieved when the dietary CP concentration was more than 210 g/kg, and quails treated with 11.51 MJ/kg showed better weight gain and feed efficiency (P < 0.05) than did those that received 12.13 MJ/kg. Furthermore, the weight gains and protein intakes on the basis of per MJ from the two experiments were pooled together to estimate the protein intake necessary for the best growth performance by two mathematic models; they were then converted to dietary CP concentrations of 204 (minimum) and 233 g/kg (maximum) when ME was 11.51 MJ/kg. In conclusion, BBQ will achieve good growth performance with dietary CP of more than 204 g/kg on the basis of an ME of 11.51 MJ/kg in weeks 1 to 4.

Since they were first described in 1993, it was found that recombinant variable fragments (rVHHs) of heavy-chain antibodies (HCAbs) from Camelidae have unusual biophysical properties, as well as a special ability to interact with epitopes that are cryptic for conventional Abs. It has been assumed that in vivo raised polyclonal HCAbs (pHCAbs) should behave in a similar manner than rVHHs; however, this assumption has not been tested sufficiently. Furthermore, our own preliminary work on a single serum sample from a llama immunized with a β-lactamase, has suggested that pHCAbs have no special ability to down-modulate catalytic activity. In this work, we further explored the interaction of pHCAbs from four llamas raised against two microbial enzymes and analyzed it within a short and a long immunization plan. The relative contribution of pHCAbs to serum titer was found to be low compared with that of the most abundant conventional subisotype (IgG1), during the whole immunization schedule. Furthermore, pHCAbs not only failed to inhibit the enzymes, but also activated one of them. Altogether, these results suggest that raising high titer inhibitory HCAbs is not a straightforward strategy – neither as a biotechnological strategy nor in the biological context of an immune response against infection – as raising inhibitory rVHHs.

Binational genetic evaluation between Germany and France were performed for each type trait using a single-trait MACE (multiple across-country evaluation) model. Daughter yield deviations (DYD) of bulls having 30 equivalent daughter contributions or more were the data for parameter estimation. Full pedigree information of bulls was used via sire and dam relationships. In general, across-country genetic correlation estimates were in agreement with what is observed by Interbull. The estimated correlations were over 0.93 for stature, rump angle, udder depth, front teat placement, teat length and rear teat placement. These traits have been classified in both countries for a long period of time. However, some other type traits were included later in the French type classification system (most of them since 2000): chest width, body depth, angularity, rump width, rear leg rear view, fore udder and rear udder height. The estimated correlations for these traits were relatively low. In order to check changes in genetic correlations over time, data from bulls born until the end of 1995 were discarded. Higher genetic correlation estimates between both countries were obtained by using more recent data especially for traits having lower genetic correlation, e.g. body depth correlation increased from 0.55 to 0.83. Once genetic correlations were estimated, binational genetic evaluation between Germany and France were performed for each type trait using DYD of bulls. The rankings of bulls obtained from this evaluation had some differences with Interbull rankings but a similar proportion of bulls from each country was found. Finally, more computationally demanding binational evaluations were performed using yield deviations of cows for binational cow comparison. The rankings obtained were influenced by the number of daughters per bull and heritabilities used in each country.

Two field trials were conducted with 138 and 123 bacon-weight pigs respectively from one farm to determine the effect on bacon yield of feeding the animals sugar solutions prior to slaughter. Three treatments were tested: immediate slaughter on arrival at the abattoir; lairage overnight with access to water only (15 h); and overnight lairage with access to a sugar solution (6 h) followed by water only (9 h) prior to slaughter. A glucose syrup solution was used in one trial and a sucrose solution of similar hexose-equivalent concentration (550 g/kg) in the other. Access to either of the sugar solutions, relative to water only or immediate slaughter, increased bacon yield. This was entirely due to glucose-fed pigs having a higher carcass yield (2·3 % and 1·5 % respectively) and a trend in this direction for the sucrose-fed animals (0·9% and 1·0% respectively). Carcasses of glucose-fed pigs actually gained less weight than those of their counterparts during the curing process, but this did not occur with the sucrose solution. Access to sucrose relative to water only and immediate slaughter increased liver weights by 32% and 42% respectively. Lower hepatic responses were obtained with glucose syrup (18% and 12%). Both sugar solutions reduced muscle ultimate pH (0·1 to 0·2 unit) relative to water only in overnight lairage.

A by-product of the distilling industry designated ‘distillers’ grains plus solubles' was evaluated using forty-eight growing pigs. The product was included at 0, 14·7 and 25% in three diets in which the proportion of other constituents was adjusted to give similar concentrations of TDN, dry matter and crude protein.

The performance and carcass quality of pigs receiving 0% and 14·7% of the by-product in the diet was similar, but inclusion at 25% significantly reduced growth rate (g/day) from 632 for the 0% diet to 578.

An experiment was conducted with 84 suckling Scottish Blackface twin lambs on an improved hill pasture with a history of cobalt deficiency and molybdenum/sulphur-induced copper deficiency. The dams of 13 pairs of twins were treated with 90 mg copper at parturition (Cue) and one member of each pair was given a cobalt bullet (Co + ). One member of each of a further 29 pairs was treated periodically with 5 to 15mg copper to maintain plasma copper concentrations >0·6mg/l (Cu+) while their siblings received no supplementary copper (Cu). Fourteen of these pairs also received a cobalt bullet (Co + ). Lambs not treated with cobalt are designated Co−.

The Cue treatment increased milk copper concentrations, but only for a short time, and resulted in transitory increases in lamb plasma copper concentrations and rate of live-weight gain. At the end of the grazing phase, at approximately 20 weeks of age, Cu+ lambs had gained 0-28 kg more weight than Cue lambs and 158 kg more than Cue lambs, and had higher liver copper concentrations. Cu+ and Cue lambs had heavier and fatter empty bodies and carcasses than Cu− lambs. The cobalt treatment produced no effects at this stage.

Fifty-four of the lambs were housed and given dried grass pellets ad libitum. After 83 days liver copper concentrations were higher in Co− than Co+ lambs, and in Cu+ than in Cu− and Cue lambs. The copper treatments had no effect on rate or efficiency of live-weight gain, but Co− lambs gained weight more quickly and more efficiently than Co+ lambs.
