For aerodynamic design optimisation as well as for multidisciplinary design optimisation studies, it is very desirable to limit the number of the geometric design variables. In Ref. 1, a ‘fundamental’ parametric aerofoil geometry representation method was presented. The method included the introduction of a geometric ‘class function/shape function’ transformation technique, CST, such that round nose/sharp aft end geometries as well as other classes of geometries could be represented exactly by analytic well behaved and simple mathematical functions having easily observed physical features. The CST method was shown to describe an essentially limitless design space composed entirely of analytically smooth geometries. In Ref. 2, the CST methodology was extended to more general three dimensional applications such as wing, body, ducts and nacelles. It was shown that any general 3D geometry can be represented by a distribution of fundamental shapes, and that the ‘shape function/class function’ methodology can be used to describe the fundamental shapes as well as the distributions of the fundamental shapes. A number of applications of the ‘CST’ method to nacelles, ducts, wings and bodies were presented to illustrate the versatility of this new methodology. In this paper, the CST method is extended to include geometric warping such as variable camber, simple flap, aeroelastic and flutter deflections. The use of the CST method for geometric morphing of one geometric shape into another is also shown. The use of CST analytic wings in design optimisation will also be discussed.

In the autumn of 1902 the Wright brothers spent just over eight weeks at their test site in the Kill Devil Hills near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, testing their third Glider design. During the trial period they implemented an inter-linked roll-yaw control system. Together with the forward canard surface, this gave them control over vertical and horizontal components of the flight path. They were also able to hone and perfect their piloting skills. In just two days in the final week, they made about 250 glides. The success of the trials instilled the confidence in the Wright brothers to proceed rapidly to the construction of a powered aircraft. Within a month of returning to Dayton, they were writing to engine manufacturers with their specification – an engine that would develop eight to nine brake horse power, weigh no more than 180lb and be free from vibration; they would not find a suitable powerplant and had to design and build their own. The invention of the powered aeroplane in 1903 somewhat overshadows the earlier critical flight control developments, but the birth of flight control in 1902 opened the way for aviation to flourish. With the aid of modern flight science techniques – wind-tunnel testing, computational flight dynamics and piloted simulation, this paper examines the technology of the Wrights' 1902 glider. The research forms a part of the Liverpool Wright Project, aiming to bring to life the Wright brothers' achievements in this centenary period. Wilbur and Orville Wright are recognised by many as the first aeronautical engineers and test pilots. In so many ways they set standards that today's engineers and organisations benefit from. Their work in the period 1901 to 1902 reflects their genius and the paper reviews this work in detail, examining the design, aerodynamic characteristics and flying qualities of the aircraft that first featured a practical three-axis control system.

The buckling of simply-supported sandwich panels, made up from fibre reinforced laminated face plates and honeycomb cores, is considered when they are subjected to uniform end loading. Numerical results are given for both overall buckling and face plate wrinkling for panels having typical carbon fibre faces with the laminations arranged to give effectively orthotropic properties.

One of the early triumphs of the Lanchester-Prandtl wing theory was that it explained the effects of wind tunnel boundaries and provided explicit and simple formulae to correct wind tunnel measurements for these effects. As every aerodynamicist knows, this theory tells us, with the help of “images”, that the boundaries, in the presence of a lifting wing, produce extraneous velocity components in the flow. At least two generations of experimenters have routinely corrected their angles of attack and their measured drag values for the presence of the vertical component.

This paper presents and illustrates an interpolation method for the exchange of displacement data between fluid and structural meshes in a fluid-structure interaction simulation. The method is a local method where element volume conservation is central, and does not rely on information from the structural model. Results are evaluated for several two and three dimensional problems. Comparisons with the infinite plate spline method show that the new method gives a more realistic representation of the recovered surface than currently used methods.

The feasibility of mechanical flapping-wing flight has been studied by analyses and experiments. The key results from this work include the development of an efficient wing with unique features for twisting and lift balance, as well as a lightweight and reliable drive mechanism. These were incorporated into a radio-controlled, engine-powered, flapping-wing aeroplane (ornithopter), whose flight tests have been the proof-of-concept focus of this research. In September 1991, this aircraft achieved successful sustained flights, demonstrating the practicability of this particular solution for mechanical flapping-wing flight.

This paper presents a new approach to vectoring jet thrust using a miniature fluidic actuator that provided spatially distributed mass addition. The fluidic actuators used had no moving parts and produced oscillatory flow with a square wave form at frequencies up to 1·6kHz. A subsonic jet with an exit diameter of 3·81cm was controlled using single and dual fluidic actuators, each with an equivalent circular diameter of 1·06mm. The fluidic nozzle was operated at pressures between 20·68 and 165·47kPa. The objectives of the present work included documentation of the actuation characteristics of fluidic devices, assessment of the effectiveness of fluidic devices for jet thrust vectoring, and evaluation of mass flow requirements for vectoring under various conditions. Measurements were made in the flow field using a pitot probe for the vectored and unvectored cases. Some acoustic measurements were made using microphones in the near-field and for selected cases particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements were made. Thrust vectoring was obtained in low speed jets by momentum effects with fluidic device mass flow rates of only 2 × 10–4kg/sec (0·6% of main jet mass flow per fluidic oscillator). Although a single fluidic device produced vectoring of the primary jet, the dual fluidic device configuration (with two fluidic devices on either side of the jet exit) produced mass flux enhancement of 28% with no vectoring. Our results indicate that fluidic actuators have the potential for use in thrust vectoring, flow mixing and industrial flow deflection applications.

The primary structure of an aeroplane usually consists basically of a set of tubular beams. The main structural box of the wing or tailplane is a well-known example: a semi-monocoque fuselage is another. For any given loading condition of the aircraft the material in the tube is stressed mainly in tension, in shear, or in compression, depending on its location in the tube cross section.

The aim of the designer is to make the material fulfil these three functions in the most economical manner. In tension, he is limited only by the quality of material available. In shear, this is again substantially the case, although it is well known that very light shear webs over great depths do not develop as high an effective failing stress as do more sturdy webs. This property of dependence on the intensity of loading is much more marked in the case of the compression structure, which is liable to instability in various ways.

This paper presents a new algorithm that predicts the quantity of fuel burned by an aircraft flying at a constant speed and altitude. It considers the continuous fuel burn rate variation with time caused by the gross weight (and centre of gravity position) modification due to the fuel burn process itself. The algorithm was developed for use by the Flight Management System (FMS) and employs the same aircraft performance data as the existing FMS fuel burn prediction algorithms. The new fuel burn method was developed for aircraft models that use the centre of gravity position as well as for models that do not consider the centre of gravity position. This algorithm was developed for normal flight conditions. Algorithm performances were evaluated for two aircraft models: one for models that use an aircraft’s centre of gravity position – a more complex and computing intensive method, and one for those that do not use the centre of gravity position. The validation data were generated based on the information produced on a CMC Electronics – Esterline FMS platform that used identical aircraft models and performance data for identical flight conditions.

Mixing systems have many applications in gas turbines and aircraft jet propulsion, e.g. mixing zones in combustion chambers, ejectors for jet lift thrust augmentors and supersonic propulsion systems. A further application similar to that of combustion chamber mixing is that of mixing the cold and hot exhausts of a bypass jet engine. These are both characterised by mixing at constant static pressure and approximately constant total pressure as opposed to the more general case of unequal pressures in ejector systems (Fig. 1).

The exhaust mixing process as used in Rolls-Royce bypass jet engines, e.g. Spey and Conway, enables the potential of the bypass principle, in terms of minimum weight and fuel consumption, to be exploited by a simple practical device.

This is achieved by mixing the two streams in a common duct of fairly short dimensions with a corrugated metal interface on the inlet side. The consideration of these practical systems forms the main topic of this paper.

'Better, faster, cheaper’ (BFC) emerged in the 1990s as a new paradigm for aerospace products. In this paper, we examine some of the underlying reasons for BFC and offer some thoughts to help frame the thinking and action of aerospace industry professionals in this new era. Examination of literature on industrial innovation indicates that aeronautical products have evolved to a ‘dominant design’ and entered the ‘specific phase’ of their product life cycle. Innovation in this phase centers on: incremental product improvement, especially for productivity and quality; process technology; technological innovations that offer superior substitutes. The first two of these are aligned with BFC objectives.

The concepts of ‘value’ and ‘best lifecycle value’ are introduced as conceptual frameworks. Value is offered as a metric for BFC. Risk management is intimately tied to achieving value and needs to be integrated into aeronautical processes. The process technology area is addressed by considering ‘lean’ practices for design, engineering and manufacturing. Illustrative results of process improvements from the seven-year Lean Aerospace Initiative research programme at MIT indicate opportunities to achieve BFC. Concluding remarks offer some challenges to industry, government and academics in aeronautical design, engineering and manufacturing.

A Matrix Eigenvalue Calculation is rich in information content but expensive in computer time. This is why, in a typical vibration problem, there are many more elements than masses, or rather, many more elementary deflections than degrees of freedom for vibrations.

The paper presents the results of measurement of the static pressure, total pressure and swirl in the flow through an S-shaped duct of typical air intake proportions mounted in a wind tunnel and tested at different incidences and different through-flow ratios. In order to reduce the magnitude of swirl at high incidence, two methods have been studied - one, to change the distribution of pressures by means of a spoiler and two, to re-energize the separated flow with an inflow of free stream air through auxiliary inlets. Measurements were also made, at 0° incidence, with a perforated spoiler intended to simulate roughly the taking in of low energy flow from the fuselage boundary layer. The results show a small degree of swirl at low incidence which takes the classical pattern of two contra-rotating flows, and a large degree of swirl at high incidence, in the form of a single rotating flow. Of the anti-swirl devices, the spoiler is the more powerful and can be sized either to reverse the swirl direction or to eliminate the swirl completely. A parameter of swirl coefficient, SC60, has been suggested. Values of SC60 at 30° incidence are 0.188 for the duct as designed, 0.068 for the arrangement with auxiliary inflow and −0.039 with a solid spoiler of width 0.15 times throat width. The various arrangements tested, together with results of an earlier study, shed useful light on the general nature of swirl in an S-duct, its method of generation and its final form and magnitude. A further experiment will be made on a duct having both a horizontal and a vertical offset.

The paper presents the numerical and experimental validation of a hybrid actuation control concept – fuzzy logic proportional-integral-derivative (PID) plus conventional on-off – for a new morphing wing mechanism, using smart materials made of shape memory alloy (SMA) as actuators. After a presentation of the hybrid controller architecture that was adopted in the Part 1, this paper focuses on its implementation, simulation and validation.

The PID on-off controller was numerically and experimentally implemented using the Matlab/Simulink software. Following preliminary numerical simulations which were conducted to tune the controller, an experimental validation was performed. To implement the controller on the physical model, two programmable switching power supplies (AMREL SPS100-33) and a Quanser Q8 data acquisition card were used. The data acquisition inputs were two signals from linear variable differential transformer potentiometers, indicating the positions of the actuators, and six signals from thermocouples installed on the SMA wires. The acquisition board’s output channels were used to control power supplies in order to obtain the desired skin deflections. The experimental validation utilised an experimental bench test in laboratory conditions in the absence of aerodynamic forces, and a wind-tunnel test for different actuation commands. Simultaneously, the optimised aerofoils were experimentally validated with the theoretically-determined aerofoils obtained earlier. Both the transition point real time position detection and visualisation were realised in wind tunnel tests.

An important prerequisite for the design, assessment and certification of aircraft and their associated control systems is a quantitative specification of the environment in which the aircraft is intended to operate, for example, atmospheric gust. Gust loads on aircraft may induce detrimental influences such as increased aerodynamic and structural loads, structural deformation and decreased flight dynamic performance. This paper presents a systematic and comprehensive overview of important concepts and applications of gust loads on aircraft. This overview includes a brief research background, concepts, research techniques, influences and load alleviation measures of gust. Finally, we summarise some potential improvements in the future work. It is also recommended to learn from previous experiences to avoid aviation accidents due to flight through atmospheric gusts and turbulence.

Market research predicts a large growth in numbers of passengers as well as airfreight volume for the aircraft industry. An expected concomitant increase in competition for the European aircraft industry demands that the efficiency of new aircraft has to be drastically improved. One approach to achieve this is the aerodynamic optimisation of the wing. The fixed wing is designed optimally only for one flight condition. This flight condition is described by the parameters altitude, Mach number and aircraft weight which vary continuously during the mission of the aircraft. Therefore, the aircraft is just periodically near the chosen design point. To compensate for this major disadvantage, an adaptive wing for optimal adaptation and variation of the profile geometry to the actual flight conditions is under development. DaimlerChrysler Aerospace Airbus, DaimlerChrysler Research and the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) are working as project partners on concepts for a variable camber and a local spoiler bump. In this paper structural concepts developed by the German Aerospace Centre for both objectives will be presented. The concepts are designed under the aspect of adaptive structural systems and require a high integration of actuators, sensors and controllers in the structure. Special aspects of the design will be discussed and first results, analytical, numerical as well as experimental, will be presented. Part of the concept design is also the development of new actuators optimised for the specific problem. A new actuator concept for the spoiler bump based on a cylindrical tube and activated either by pressure or multifunctional materials (e.g. shape memory alloys) will additionally be shown.

It is shown that, if the well-known mixing-length formula is regarded simply as a relationship between the velocity and the stress distributions in the wall region of a turbulent flow, then a truly universal distribution of mixing length is sufficient to describe the experimentally observed departures of the velocity distribution from the usual law of the wall as a result of severe pressure gradients and transverse surface curvature. Comparisons have been made with a wide variety of experimental data to demonstrate the general validity of the mixing-length model in describing the flow close to a smooth wall.

An extension of the re-laminarisation criterion of Patel and Head, and some experimental evidence, suggest that the thick axisymmetric boundary layer on a slender cylinder placed axially in a uniform stream cannot be maintained in a fully turbulent state for values of the Reynolds number, based on friction velocity and cylinder radius, below a certain critical value.

The Clean Sky Joint Undertaking is currently managing two large-scale research and innovation programmes under FP7 and Horizon 2020 to contribute to the strengthening of the European aeronautical sector ensuring global leadership and competitiveness. This paper describes the research and demonstration programmes in Clean Sky (2008–2017) and Clean Sky 2 (2014–2024) related to propulsion technologies for the next-generation aircraft. The bulk of this work is addressed in Clean Sky 1 under the “Sustainable And Green Engines” (SAGE) programme and under the “ENGINES” programme in Clean Sky 2. The High-Level Objectives are described for each engine architecture as well as the targets in terms of CO2 and noise reduction versus a year 2000 reference unless stated otherwise. An overview of the new engine concepts that would satisfy the ACARE objectives is presented, including the main technologies which are to be developed to ensure the successful demonstration of each of those new engine concepts.

A method is described for obtaining the displacements (and hence the stresses) of a linear elastic system under a given transient load in a more accurate and more expeditious manner than is possible by the standard method. For simplicity, ho account is taken of damping forces in describing the method.

The method is of interest to engineers and others who require to obtain numerical answers to problems of the type described above. It depends upon the fact that in many practical cases of transient loads the inertia forces in the series of normal modes of an elastic system converge rapidly, compared with the series of “normal” loadings in terms of which the spatial distribution of the applied load can be expressed.

There is increased interest in new classes of mini- and micro-UAVs with sizes ranging from one metre to ten centimetres. Many envisioned applications of such UAVs require them to be able to fly close to the ground in complex environments. The difficulties associated with flying in such environments coupled with the reduced payload capacity of such airframes means that new methods of sensing and control need to be considered. Good models for such methods are found in the world of flying insects. One particular visual cue used by insects is optic flow, which is the apparent visual motion seen by the insect as a result of its motion through the environment. This paper discusses several research efforts aimed at developing new sensing and control algorithms inspired by insect vision and flight behaviors. These efforts are part of DARPA's controlled biological and biomimetic systems (CBBS) programme. In these (and related) efforts, many elegant control stratagems have been discovered which suggest that simple reflexive schemes combined with the measurement of optic flow may be sufficient to provide many aspects of autonomous navigation in complex environments. Furthermore, these efforts are implementing these behaviors in real flying UAV platforms by using novel hardware and software to measure optic flow, and inserting optic flow measurements into a control loop using a combination of ‘best engineering approaches’ with inspiration taken from biology. This has resulted in fixed and rotary-wing mini-UAVs that are able to hold an altitude and perform terrain following.
