The development of new methods of producing hypersonic wind-tunnel flows at increasing velocities during the last few decades is reviewed with attention to airbreathing propulsion, hypervelocity aerodynamics and superorbital aerodynamics. The role of chemical reactions in these flows leads to use of a binary scaling simulation parameter, which can be related to the Reynolds number, and which demands that smaller wind tunnels require higher reservoir pressure levels for simulation of flight phenomena. The use of combustion heated vitiated wind tunnels for propulsive research is discussed, as well as the use of reflected shock tunnels for the same purpose. A flight experiment validating shock-tunnel results is described, and relevant developments in shock tunnel instrumentation are outlined. The use of shock tunnels for hypervelocity testing is reviewed, noting the role of driver gas contamination in determining test time, and presenting examples of air dissociation effects on model flows. Extending the hypervelocity testing range into the superorbital regime with useful test times is seen to be possible by use of expansion tube/tunnels with a free piston driver.

From Lanchester to the A380; from the era of the great pioneers to the integrated engineering teams and sophisticated analyses required to develop todays airliner. The ‘art’ of Aerodynamics has progressed a long, long way in the intervening century, but even with todays computational power it is still relevant to understand the basics and the early theories as developed by Lanchester and his contemporaries. In this lecture, the relevance of some of that early work and the compromises that must be made in optimising a modern wing design will be presented. These will include optimisation of spanwise loading, including trimming effects and winglets, and high and low speed aerodynamic and structural interactions, with examples drawn from the author's career in helping to develop the wings for the HS146 (now the RJX) and the Airbus family.

With the exponentially increasing computer power available over the last 30 years, the ‘art of compromise’ has progressively become the ‘science of optimisation’ and the lecture closes with a brief reference to techniques used to optimise current wing designs for the Airbus family.

Work on the finite element analysis of flat plates in bending has been directed towards elements which satisfy kinematic conditions between the adjacent elements in conjunction with the theorem of minimum potential energy, eg Argyris, Bazeley et al, Clough and Veubeke.

The purpose of this Note is to provide the main details of a triangular element which satisfies equilibrium conditions between the adjacent elements and which is used in conjunction with the complementary energy principle. The bending moments vary linearly within the element and use is made in the derivation of the analogy (see eg Southwell, Fox, Fung and Morley that exists between problems of plane stress and plate bending. In particular, many of the present details are taken directly from the plane stress analysis of Veubeke who, along with Argyris, considers a displacement triangular element with linearly varying strain.

Accurate stress and strain analysis in bolted joints is of considerable interest in order to design more efficient and safer aerospace structural elements. In this paper, a finite element modelling of aluminium alloy 7075-T6 bolted plates, which are extensively used in aircraft structures, is discussed. The ANSYS Finite Element (FE) package was used for modelling the joint and estimating the stresses and strains created in the joint due to initial clamping forces and subsequent longitudinal tensile loadings. A double-lap bolted joint with a single bolt and nut was considered in the study. A three-dimensional (3D) finite element model of the joint was generated, and then subjected to three different simulated clamping forces followed by different levels of longitudinal tensile load. 3D surface-to-surface contact elements were employed to model the contact between the various components of the bolted joint. Friction effects were considered in the numerical analysis; and moreover, the clearance between the bolt and the plates was simulated in the model. FE results revealed beneficial compressive stresses near the hole edge as a result of applying the clamping. It was found that a higher clamping force can significantly decrease the magnitude of the resultant tensile stress at the hole edge and also bearing stress in the joint when subjected to the longitudinal tensile load.

The paper presents a solution to the buckling of infinitely long plates clamped along the edges, together with an extension of the solution obtained by Stein and Fralich for the case when the edges are simply-supported. It is shown that, as a consequence of increasing the edge support from that of a simple support to one in which both deflection and rotation are prevented, the rigidity which an intermediate transverse stiffener must possess in order to support the plate effectively is much reduced. Agreement between the theoretical relationships and existing experimental data is good.

The cycloidal propeller for a Micro-Aerial Vehicle (MAV)-scale cyclogyro in hover was studied using a 2D Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations solver. The effects of the blade dynamic stall, parallel Blade Vortex Interaction (BVI), inflow variation and flow curvature were discussed, based on the results of numerical simulation. The results from the 2D Computational Fluid Dynamics simulation indicated that the blade of the cycloidal rotor is actually performing a pitching oscillation, if observed in a moving reference frame. The dynamic stall vortices shed from the upstream blade cause intense parallel BVI on the downstream blade. The interaction will induce upwash and downwash on the downstream blade. This changes the effective reduced frequency and actually delays the stall of the blade, which is beneficial to the thrust generation. There is also strong downwash in the rotor cage and it changes the inflow velocity experienced by the blade. The downwash and flow curvature can either be beneficial or harmful to the thrust generation. The combined effects of dynamic stall, parallel BVI, inflow variation and flow curvature cause large aerodynamic force peaks and ensure the cycloidal rotors work at very low rotation speeds with high thrust. This guarantees that the cycloidal rotors possess at least the same level of hover efficiency as screw propellers.

It is becoming recognised that before civil aircraft can operate at high density, the most important problem to be solved is that of traffic control. Methods exist by which a single aircraft can navigate from a distant point to an airport and let down to a safe landing under bad weather conditions. Difficulties arise when several aircraft are involved at once and long delays can occur in the neighbourhood of airports carrying high density traffic. In this paper an analysis is made of the traffic problem in an attempt to clarify some of the factors involved.

Measurements made at a Mach number of 0.18 and a chord-based Reynolds number of 4·2 x 106 on a constant-chord model having a NACA 4412 aerofoil section are described and compared with the results of flow field calculations.

Both the experimental arrangement and the difficulties initially experienced in achieving an adequate approximation to two-dimensional flow above the wing are briefly outlined.

The measurements include static pressure distributions on the wing surface and on the wind-tunnel walls above and below the mid-span section of the wing. The main emphasis in the experiment was, however, on defining the development of the upper surface boundary layer through separation (at about 20% chord ahead of the trailing-edge) and on into the wake, making extensive use of laser anemometry to measure mean velocities. In addition, Reynolds stresses were measured in certain parts of the flow field by hot-wire anemometry.

The flow field calculations are of the semi-inverse kind in which an inverse momentum-integral treatment of the shear flow, used to avoid difficulties at separation, is coupled to a direct solution of the inviscid flow problem. The main features of the method are outlined.

For plane turbulent jets and wall jets in uniform streaming flow a simple method, based on a simple empirical formula for the rate of growth which differs from that proposed by Abramovich, is presented. The predictions of length scale, l0, and velocity scale, u0, are in good agreement with experimental results for all ratios of free-stream to jet exit velocity and the eddy viscosity Reynolds number has the correct asymptotic values.

It is shown that the flow in a region of recirculation may be divided into a core, in which the vorticity may be constant, and a boundary layer surrounding the core. An approximate solution is given for the flow inside a circular cylinder with partly fixed and partly moving walls.

Flow patterns which include regions of recirculation occur frequently, for example, behind bluff bodies, in sharp bends, and in sudden expansions in ducts. Little is known about this type of flow, which will be referred to, for brevity, as ‘cavity’ flow. It used to be thought that the velocities in the ‘ cavity ’ were small compared with the stream velocity, but it is now known that the maximum velocity in the cavity may be about 30 per cent. of the stream velocity. This implies that the motion within the cavity cannot be neglected.

Turbulence and gusts cause variations in the aerodynamic forces and moments applied to the structure of aircraft, resulting in passenger discomfort and dynamic loads on the structure that it must be designed to support. By designing Gust Load Alleviation (GLA) systems, two objectives can be achieved: first, realizing higher passenger comfort; and second, reducing the dynamic structural loads, which allows the design of lighter structures. In this paper, a methodology for designing combined feedback/feedforward GLA systems is proposed. The methodology relies on the availability of a wind profile ahead of the aircraft measured by a Doppler LIDAR sensor, and is based on $H_{\infty}$-optimal control techniques and a discrete-time preview-control problem formulation. Moreover, to allow design trade-offs between those two objectives (to achieve design flexibility) as well as to allow specification of robustness criteria, a variant of the problem using multi-channel $H_{\infty}$-optimal control techniques is introduced. The methodology developed in this paper is intended to be applied to large aircraft, e.g. transport aircraft or business jets. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed design methodology in accounting for the measured wind profile to achieve the two mentioned objectives, while ensuring both design flexibility and controller robustness and optimality.

A numerical model is developed for predicting low-velocity impact damage in laminated composites. Stacked shell elements are employed to model laminate plies with discrete interface elements in pre-determined zones to model the onset and propagation of matrix cracks and delamination. These interface elements are governed by a bi-linear cohesive failure law. Cohesive element zone size is determined by a separate finite element analysis using solid elements to identify the stress concentration sites. In order to save the computational effort, low-velocity impact load is modelled by quasi-static loading. Influence of contact force induced friction on shear driven mode II delamination is modelled by a friction model. For a clustered cross-ply laminate, calculated impact force and damage area are in good agreement with the test results. It is shown that matrix cracks should be included in the model in order to simulate delamination in adjacent interface. The practical outcome of this research is a validated modelling approach that can be further improved for predicting low-velocity impact damage in other stacking sequences.

The main factor contributing to hydroplaning on slick runways is the existence of a squeeze film in the contact area between tyre and surface. The situation may be improved by optimising surface texture so that the asperities break through the water film in a minimum time. Two techniques are described for characterising surface texture: a superposition solution based on viscous channel flow and a dimensionless number approach involving size, spacing and shape factors. The “feel” of a surface is quantitatively obtained, and an outflow meter is described which, by directly measuring the mean hydraulic radius of runways, provides a comparison of their drainage abilities.

The long-term goal is to design and manufacture optimal ‘on-demand’ vortex generators, ‘dimples’ that can produce vortices of prescribed strength and duration for the real-time control of aerodynamic flows that are either undergoing transition or are fully turbulent, attached or separating. Electro-active polymers (EAP) are ideal for a dimple control surface, offering high strain rate, fast response, and high electromechanical efficiency. EAP can also be used as the basis of a resistanc – or capacitance – change pressure sensor, development of which has just begun. In terms of manufacture, inkjet printing of EAP also offers a paradigm shift such that a monolithic control surface is a very real possibility. Important features for integration into a control system are robustness and a predictable, repeatable motion. With these objectives in mind, the suitability of EAP-based actuators is assessed both mechanically and aerodynamically. The ultimate goal is to integrate these devices, along with shear-stress and pressure sensors and distributed control, also under development, into a flexible ‘smart skin’ which could be incorporated into an airframe structure. The response of a laminar boundary layer to forcing is investiagted using mechanical dimples.

This paper describes the current status of knowledge regarding the impact of aviation on the atmosphere. The growth of the aviation industry is likely to continue in the future and at present there are significant concerns that this will adversely affect climate and local air quality in the vicinity of airports. Indeed, it is possible that air quality may become a constraint to increased capacity of some large hub airports. Currently the radiative forcing impact from aircraft emissions, other than CO2, are not accounted for in the International Civil Aviation Organization emission trading scheme proposals. Taking only this approach, emissions trading could, in theory, increase the radiative forcing, rather than decrease it. The study of improved ‘environmentally friendly’ flight is still in its infancy, however any proposed and actual new developments, in terms of technology and operational practice, should include an environmental assessment.

Circumstances can arise in which a rectangular panel, forming part of a structure, is subject to non-uniform in-plane compression, and in which it is important that instability of the panel should not occur. Problems of this nature occur, for example, in the structure of modern highspeed aircraft subject to the transient thermal stresses that can arise from rapid changes of speed or altitude.

Trailing edge blowing over a Coanda surface has been utilised as a circulation control mechanism for increasing the lift of an aircraft wing. Typically, high energy air is blown from a narrow spanwise slot over the rounded trailing edge of a wing and the air supply is modulated to effect a degree of lift control on the wing. This configuration produces an aerodynamic force in a uni-directional sense only. An alternative novel flow control actuator is described which utilises a simple variable geometry Coanda surface with upper and lower spanwise blowing slots to achieve fully proportional bi-directional control in the manner of a conventional flap. A prototype device has been wind-tunnel tested and is shown to have substantially linear response characteristics and to be as efficient as an equivalent flap surface. The performance of a flow control actuator suitable for small UAV applications is described.

A double Fourier series solution is presented for the buckling of simply supported orthotropic and isotropic skew plates, subjected to in-plane compressive and shear edge loads. All the boundary conditions, including the vanishing of the normal bending moment along the edges, are satisfied. Numerical results, suitable for design purposes, are presented graphically for a number of independent parameters such as skew angle, ratio of flexural rigidities and aspect ratio. The results show that the buckling strength is substantially effected by the skew angle, and to a lesser extent, by the ratio of the flexural rigidities and aspect ratio. In contrast with positive shear edge loads, which tend to decrease the skew angle, negative shear edge loads appear to reduce the buckling strength of orthotropic and isotropic skew plates.

The “frozen stress” techniques of photoelasticity can give a complete knowledge of the stress, system in a solid body, but the examination of the stresses requires more time and care than in corresponding flat plate tests. In tests on tubes with transverse circular holes, sponsored by The Royal Aeronautical Society, all practicable geometrical shapes are examined and the maximum stress is measured in tension, bending and torsion. The results are comprehensive and show the inadequacy of previous results. In all cases the maximum stress occurs inside the bore of the hole. The accuracy of all the graphs of stress concentration factors is better than five per cent.

An improved version (HLLC) of the Harten, Lax, van Leer Riemann solver (HLL) for the steady supersonic Euler equations is presented. Unlike the HLL, the HLLC version admits the presence of the slip line in the structure of the solution. This leads to enhanced resolution of computed slip lines by Godunov type methods. We assess the HLLC solver in the context of the first order Godunov method and the second order weighted average flux method (WAF). It is shown that the improvement embodied in the HLLC solver over the HLL solver is virtually equivalent to incorporating the exact Riemann solver.
