Optimization problems in cancer radiation therapy are considered, with the efficiency functional defined as the difference between expected survival probabilities for normal and neoplastic tissues. Precise upper bounds of the efficiency functional over natural classes of cellular response functions are found. The ‘Lipschitz' upper bound gives rise to a new family of probability metrics. In the framework of the ‘m hit-one target' model of irradiated cell survival the problem of optimal fractionation of the given total dose into n fractions is treated. For m = 1, n arbitrary, and n = 1, 2, m arbitrary, complete solution is obtained. In other cases an approximation procedure is constructed. Stability of extremal values and upper bounds of the efficiency functional with respect to perturbation of radiosensitivity distributions for normal and tumor tissues is demonstrated.

In this paper we extend the results of Meyn and Tweedie (1992b) from discrete-time parameter to continuous-parameter Markovian processes Φ evolving on a topological space.

We consider a number of stability concepts for such processes in terms of the topology of the space, and prove connections between these and standard probabilistic recurrence concepts. We show that these structural results hold for a major class of processes (processes with continuous components) in a manner analogous to discrete-time results, and that complex operations research models such as storage models with state-dependent release rules, or diffusion models such as those with hypoelliptic generators, have this property. Also analogous to discrete time, ‘petite sets', which are known to provide test sets for stability, are here also shown to provide conditions for continuous components to exist.

New ergodic theorems for processes with irreducible and countably reducible skeleton chains are derived, and we show that when these conditions do not hold, then the process may be decomposed into an uncountable orbit of skeleton chains.

We consider a stochastic model for the spread of an epidemic amongst a population split into m groups, in which infectives move among the groups and contact susceptibles at a rate which depends upon the infective's original group, its current group, and the group of the susceptible. The distributions of total size and total area under the trajectory of infectives for such epidemics are analysed. We derive exact results in terms of multivariate Gontcharoff polynomials by treating our model as a multitype collective Reed–Frost process and slightly adapting the results of Picard and Lefèvre (1990). We also derive asymptotic results, as each of the group sizes becomes large, by generalising the method of Scalia-Tomba (1985), (1990).

Under some regularity conditions, in the supercritical Smith–Wilkinson branching process it is shown that as k, the starting population size, tends to infinity, the rate of convergence of qk, the corresponding extinction probability, to zero is similar to that of:

k–θ, if there exists at least one subcritical state in the random environment space; xkk–α, if there exist only supercritical states in the random environment space; exp , if there exists at least one critical state and the others are supercritical in the random environment space.

Here θ, x, α and c are positive constants determined by the process.

In Part I we developed stability concepts for discrete chains, together with Foster–Lyapunov criteria for them to hold. Part II was devoted to developing related stability concepts for continuous-time processes. In this paper we develop criteria for these forms of stability for continuous-parameter Markovian processes on general state spaces, based on Foster-Lyapunov inequalities for the extended generator.

Such test function criteria are found for non-explosivity, non-evanescence, Harris recurrence, and positive Harris recurrence. These results are proved by systematic application of Dynkin's formula.

We also strengthen known ergodic theorems, and especially exponential ergodic results, for continuous-time processes. In particular we are able to show that the test function approach provides a criterion for f-norm convergence, and bounding constants for such convergence in the exponential ergodic case.

We apply the criteria to several specific processes, including linear stochastic systems under non-linear feedback, work-modulated queues, general release storage processes and risk processes.

In the biased annihilating branching process, particles place offspring on empty neighboring sites at rate A and destroy neighbors at rate 1. It is conjectured that for any λ ≥ 0 the population will spread to ∞, and this is shown in one dimension for The process on a finite graph when starting with a non-empty configuration has limiting distribution vλ /(λ +1), the product measure with density λ/(1 +λ). It is shown that vλ /(λ +1) and δ Ø are the only stationary distributions on Moreover, if and the initial configuration is non-empty, then the limiting measure is vλ /(λ +1) provided the initial measure converges.

The supercritical Markov branching process is examined in the case where the minimal version of the process has strictly substochastic transition laws. This provides a nice example of the general construction theory for discrete-state Markov processes.

Entrance laws corresponding to the minimal process are characterised. Limit properties of the processes constructed from these entrance laws are examined. All such processes which are honest and cannot hit zero are ergodic. Otherwise these processes are λ-positive and limit theorems conditional on not having left the positive states are given.

A connection is made with recent work on the general construction problem when a λ-subinvariant measure is given. The case where immigration is allowed is mentioned.

An invariant Φ of a tree T under a k-state Markov model, where the time parameter is identified with the edges of T, allows us to recognize whether data on N observed species can be associated with the N terminal vertices of T in the sense of having been generated on T rather than on any other tree with N terminals. The invariance is with respect to the (time) lengths associated with the edges of the tree. We propose a general method of finding invariants of a parametrized functional form. It involves calculating the probability f of all kN data possibilities for each of m edge-length configurations of T, then solving for the parameters using the m equations of form Φ (f) = 0. We apply this to the case of quadratic invariants for unrooted binary trees with four terminals, for all k, using the Jukes–Cantor type of Markov matrix. We report partial results on finding the smallest algebraically independent set of invariants.

In this paper we introduce a multilevel birth-death particle system and consider its diffusion approximation which can be characterized as a M([R+)-valued process. The tightness of rescaled processes is proved and we show that the limiting M(R+)-valued process is the unique solution of the M([R+)-valued martingale problem for the limiting generator. We also study the moment structures of the limiting diffusion process.

A simple model for the intensity of infection during an epidemic in a closed population is studied. It is shown that the size of an epidemic (i.e. the number of persons infected) and the cumulative force of an epidemic (i.e. the amount of infectiousness that has to be avoided by a person that will stay uninfected during the entire epidemic) satisfy an equation of balance. Under general conditions, small deviances from this balance are, in large populations, asymptotically mixed normally distributed. For some special epidemic models the size of an asymptotically large epidemic is asymptotically normally distributed.

The tail behaviour of the limit of the normalized population size in the simple supercritical branching process, W, is studied. Most of the results concern those cases when a tail of the distribution function of W decays exponentially quickly. In essence, knowledge of the behaviour of transforms can be combined with some ‘large-deviation' theory to get detailed information on the oscillation of the distribution function of W near zero or at infinity. In particular we show how an old result of Harris (1948) on the asymptotics of the moment-generating function of W translates to tail behaviour.

This paper considers a model for the spread of an epidemic in a closed, homogeneously mixing population in which new infections occur at rate βxy/(x + y), where x and y are the numbers of susceptible and infectious individuals, respectively, and β is an infection parameter. This contrasts with the standard general epidemic in which new infections occur at rate βxy. Both the deterministic and stochastic versions of the modified epidemic are analysed. The deterministic model is completely soluble. The time-dependent solution of the stochastic model is derived and the total size distribution is considered. Threshold theorems, analogous to those of Whittle (1955) and Williams (1971) for the general stochastic epidemic, are proved for the stochastic model. Comparisons are made between the modified and general epidemics. The effect of introducing variability in susceptibility into the modified epidemic is studied.

During the last few years, several variants of P. Lévy's formula for the stochastic area of complex Brownian motion have been obtained. These are of interest in various domains of applied probability, particularly in relation to polymer studies. The method used by most authors is the diagonalization procedure of Paul Lévy.

Here we derive one such variant of Lévy's formula, due to Chan, Dean, Jansons and Rogers, via a change of probability method, which reduces the computation of Laplace transforms of Brownian quadratic functionals to the computations of the means and variances of some adequate Gaussian variables.

We then show that with the help of linear algebra and invariance properties of the distribution of Brownian motion, we are able to derive simply three other variants of Lévy's formula.

We consider a game-theoretical solution for an optimal stopping problem which we describe in terms of a job-search problem with an infinite population of candidates and an infinite population of posts of varying value. Each candidate finds posts from the post population at unit rate. If a post found is still vacant, a candidate can either accept it or reject it. The reward to a candidate is the value of the post if one is accepted and zero if he never accepts a post. There are no costs for searching, no discounting of future rewards and no recall of previously found posts. The only pressure on a candidate to accept a post comes from the changing rate at which he finds vacant posts (and the values associated with them) as a result of the actions of the other candidates. It is not possible to define optimality for a single candidate without reference to the policies followed by the other candidates. We say a policy π is an evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS) if it has the following property: if all candidates used π and an individual candidate was given the option of changing his policy, then it would not be to his advantage to do so. We first find the optimal value function and optimal policy for the case of a single candidate operating in an environment where the distribution of posts on offer and the chance of finding one both vary with time in a known way. We then show that for the infinite population there is a unique ESS given by a control-limit policy π c, where the control-limit function c is the solution of a given differential equation with a given initial condition. This function c also gives the expected future reward function for any single candidate when all candidates use π c.

A measure-valued diffusion approximation to a two-level branching structure was introduced in Dawson and Hochberg (1991) where it was shown that conditioned on non-extinction at time t, and appropriately rescaled, the process converges as t → ∞to a non-trivial limiting distribution. Here we discuss a different approach to conditioning on non-extinction (popular in one-level branching) and relate the two limiting distributions.

One expects, intuitively, that the total damage caused by an epidemic increases, in a certain sense, with the infection intensity exerted by the infectives during their lifelength. The original object of the present work is to make precise in which probabilistic terms such a statement does indeed hold true, when the spread of the disease is described by a collective Reed–Frost model and the global cost is represented by the final size and severity. Surprisingly, this problem leads us to introduce an order relation for -valued random variables, unusual in the literature, based on the descending factorial moments. Further applications of the ordering occur when comparing certain sampling procedures through the number of un-sampled individuals. In particular, it is used to reinforce slightly comparison results obtained earlier for two such samplings.

In this paper, we study the superposition of finitely many Markov renewal processes with countable state spaces. We define the S-Markov renewal equations associated with the superposed process. The solutions of the S-Markov renewal equations are derived and the asymptotic behaviors of these solutions are studied. These results are applied to calculate various characteristics of queueing systems with superposition semi-Markovian arrivals, queueing networks with bulk service, system availability, and continuous superposition remaining and current life processes.

Several queueing processes may be modeled as random walks on a multidimensional grid. In this paper the equilibrium distribution for the case of a two-dimensional grid is considered. In previous research it has been shown that for some two-dimensional random walks the equilibrium distribution has the form of an infinite series of products of powers which can be constructed with a compensation procedure. The object of the present paper is to investigate under which conditions such an elegant solution exists and may be found with a compensation approach. The conditions can be easily formulated in terms of the random behaviour in the inner area and the drift on the boundaries.

Let X1, X2, · ··, Xn be a sequence of n random variables taking values in the ξ -letter alphabet . We consider the number N = N(n, k) of non-overlapping occurrences of a fixed k-letter word under (a) i.i.d. and (b) stationary Markovian hypotheses on the sequence , and use the Stein–Chen method to obtain Poisson approximations for the same. In each case, results and couplings from Barbour et al. (1992) are used to show that the total variation distance between the distribution of N and that of an appropriate Poisson random variable is of order (roughly) O(kS(k)), where S(k) denotes the stationary probability of the word in question. These results vastly improve on the approximations obtained in Godbole (1991). In the Markov case, we also make use of recently obtained eigenvalue bounds on convergence to stationarity due to Diaconis and Stroock (1991) and Fill (1991).

In a recent paper, van Doorn (1991) explained how quasi-stationary distributions for an absorbing birth-death process could be determined from the transition rates of the process, thus generalizing earlier work of Cavender (1978). In this paper we shall show that many of van Doorn's results can be extended to deal with an arbitrary continuous-time Markov chain over a countable state space, consisting of an irreducible class, C, and an absorbing state, 0, which is accessible from C. Some of our results are extensions of theorems proved for honest chains in Pollett and Vere-Jones (1992).

In Section 3 we prove that a probability distribution on C is a quasi-stationary distribution if and only if it is a µ-invariant measure for the transition function, P. We shall also show that if m is a quasi-stationary distribution for P, then a necessary and sufficient condition for m to be µ-invariant for Q is that P satisfies the Kolmogorov forward equations over C. When the remaining forward equations hold, the quasi-stationary distribution must satisfy a set of ‘residual equations' involving the transition rates into the absorbing state. The residual equations allow us to determine the value of µ for which the quasi-stationary distribution is µ-invariant for P. We also prove some more general results giving bounds on the values of µ for which a convergent measure can be a µ-subinvariant and then µ-invariant measure for P. The remainder of the paper is devoted to the question of when a convergent µ-subinvariant measure, m, for Q is a quasi-stationary distribution. Section 4 establishes a necessary and sufficient condition for m to be a quasi-stationary distribution for the minimal chain. In Section 5 we consider ‘single-exit' chains. We derive a necessary and sufficient condition for there to exist a process for which m is a quasi-stationary distribution. Under this condition all such processes can be specified explicitly through their resolvents. The results proved here allow us to conclude that the bounds for µ obtained in Section 3 are, in fact, tight. Finally, in Section 6, we illustrate our results by way of two examples: regular birth-death processes and a pure-birth process with absorption.
