We give here concrete formulas relating the transition generatrix functions of any random walk on a finite group to the irreducible representations of this group. Some examples of such explicit calculations for the permutation groups A4, S4, and A5 are included.

Let be the mean normal measure of a stationary random set Z in the extended convex ring in ℝd. For k ∈ {1,…,d-1}, connections are shown between and the mean of . Here, the mean is understood to be with respect to the random isotropic k-dimensional linear subspace ξk and the mean normal measure of the intersection is computed in ξk. This mean to be well defined, a suitable spherical lifting must be applied to before averaging. A large class of liftings and their resulting means are discussed. In particular, a geometrically motivated lifting is presented, for which the mean of liftings of determines uniquely for any fixed k ∈ {2,…,d-1}.

A generalization of Markov point processes is introduced in which interactions occur between connected components of the point pattern. A version of the Hammersley-Clifford characterization theorem is proved which states that a point process is a Markov interacting component process if and only if its density function is a product of interaction terms associated with cliques of connected components. Integrability and superpositional properties of the processes are shown and a pairwise interaction example is used for detailed exploration.

The strength and range of interpoint interactions in a spatial point process can be quantified by the function J = (1 - G)/(1 - F), where G is the nearest-neighbour distance distribution function and F the empty space function of the process. J(r) is identically equal to 1 for a Poisson process; values of J(r) smaller or larger than 1 indicate clustering or regularity, respectively. We show that, for a very large class of point processes, J(r) is constant for distances r greater than the range of spatial interaction. Hence both the range and type of interpoint interaction may be inferred from J without parametric model assumptions. We evaluate J(r) explicitly for a variety of point processes. The J function of the superposition of independent point processes is a weighted mean of the J functions of the individual processes.

Matryoshka dolls, the traditional Russian nesting figurines, are known worldwide for each doll’s encapsulation of a sequence of smaller dolls. In this paper, we exploit the structure of a new sequence of nested matrices we call matryoshkan matrices in order to compute the moments of the one-dimensional polynomial processes, a large class of Markov processes. We characterize the salient properties of matryoshkan matrices that allow us to compute these moments in closed form at a specific time without computing the entire path of the process. This simplifies the computation of the polynomial process moments significantly. Through our method, we derive explicit expressions for both transient and steady-state moments of this class of Markov processes. We demonstrate the applicability of this method through explicit examples such as shot noise processes, growth–collapse processes, ephemerally self-exciting processes, and affine stochastic differential equations from the finance literature. We also show that we can derive explicit expressions for the self-exciting Hawkes process, for which finding closed-form moment expressions has been an open problem since their introduction in 1971. In general, our techniques can be used for any Markov process for which the infinitesimal generator of an arbitrary polynomial is itself a polynomial of equal or lower order.

Large samples from a light-tailed distribution often have a well-defined shape. This paper examines the implications of the assumption that there is a limit shape. We show that the limit shape determines the upper quantiles for a large class of random variables. These variables may be described loosely as continuous homogeneous functionals of the underlying random vector. They play an important role in evaluating risk in a multivariate setting. The paper also looks at various coefficients of tail dependence and at the distribution of the scaled sample points for large samples. The paper assumes convergence in probability rather than almost sure convergence. This results in an elegant theory. In particular, there is a simple characterization of domains of attraction.

It is known that the simple slice sampler has robust convergence properties; however, the class of problems where it can be implemented is limited. In contrast, we consider hybrid slice samplers which are easily implementable and where another Markov chain approximately samples the uniform distribution on each slice. Under appropriate assumptions on the Markov chain on the slice, we give a lower bound and an upper bound of the spectral gap of the hybrid slice sampler in terms of the spectral gap of the simple slice sampler. An immediate consequence of this is that the spectral gap and geometric ergodicity of the hybrid slice sampler can be concluded from the spectral gap and geometric ergodicity of the simple version, which is very well understood. These results indicate that robustness properties of the simple slice sampler are inherited by (appropriately designed) easily implementable hybrid versions. We apply the developed theory and analyze a number of specific algorithms, such as the stepping-out shrinkage slice sampling, hit-and-run slice sampling on a class of multivariate targets, and an easily implementable combination of both procedures on multidimensional bimodal densities.

This paper obtains logarithmic asymptotics of moderate deviations of the stochastic process of the number of customers in a many-server queue with generally distributed inter-arrival and service times under a heavy-traffic scaling akin to the Halfin–Whitt regime. The deviation function is expressed in terms of the solution to a Fredholm equation of the second kind. A key element of the proof is the large-deviation principle in the scaling of moderate deviations for the sequential empirical process. The techniques of large-deviation convergence and idempotent processes are used extensively.

This paper investigates new properties concerning the multifractal structure of a class of random self-similar measures. These measures include the well-known Mandelbrot multiplicative cascades, sometimes called independent random cascades. We evaluate the scale at which the multifractal structure of these measures becomes discernible. The value of this scale is obtained through what we call the growth speed in Hölder singularity sets of a Borel measure. This growth speed yields new information on the multifractal behavior of the rescaled copies involved in the structure of statistically self-similar measures. Our results are useful in understanding the multifractal nature of various heterogeneous jump processes.

Suppose that I1, I2,… is a sequence of independent Bernoulli random variables with E(In) = λ/(λ + n − 1), n = 1, 2,…. If λ is a positive integer k, {In}n≥1 can be interpreted as a k-record process of a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables with a common continuous distribution. When In−1In = 1, we say that a consecutive k-record occurs at time n. It is known that the total number of consecutive k-records is Poisson distributed with mean k. In fact, for general is Poisson distributed with mean λ. In this paper, we want to find an optimal stopping time τλ which maximizes the probability of stopping at the last n such that In−1In = 1. We prove that τλ is of threshold type, i.e. there exists a tλ ∈ ℕ such that τλ = min{n | n ≥ tλ, In−1In = 1}. We show that tλ is increasing in λ and derive an explicit expression for tλ. We also compute the maximum probability Qλ of stopping at the last consecutive record and study the asymptotic behavior of Qλ as λ → ∞.

We consider the spectral analysis of several examples of bilateral birth–death processes and compute explicitly the spectral matrix and the corresponding orthogonal polynomials. We also use the spectral representation to study some probabilistic properties of the processes, such as recurrence, the invariant distribution (if it exists), and the probability current.

The purpose of this study is to present a subgeometric convergence formula for the stationary distribution of the finite-level M/G/1-type Markov chain when taking its infinite-level limit, where the upper boundary level goes to infinity. This study is carried out using the fundamental deviation matrix, which is a block-decomposition-friendly solution to the Poisson equation of the deviation matrix. The fundamental deviation matrix provides a difference formula for the respective stationary distributions of the finite-level chain and the corresponding infinite-level chain. The difference formula plays a crucial role in the derivation of the main result of this paper, and the main result is used, for example, to derive an asymptotic formula for the loss probability in the MAP/GI/1/N queue.

In this paper we develop a constructive structure theory for a class of exponential functionals of Brownian motion which includes Asian option values. This is done in two stages of differing natures. As a first step, the functionals are represented as Laguerre reduction series obtained from main results of Schröder (2006), this paper's companion paper. These reduction series are new and given in terms of the negative moments of the integral of geometric Brownian motion, whose structure theory is developed in a second step. Providing a new angle on these processes, this is done by establishing connections with theta functions. Integral representations and computable formulae for the negative moments are thus derived and then shown to furnish highly efficient ways for computing the negative moments. Application of this paper's Laguerre reduction series in numerical examples suggests that one of the most efficient methods for the explicit valuation of Asian options is obtained. The paper also provides mathematical background results referred to in Schröder (2005c).

In this article a collection of random self-similar fractal dendrites is constructed, and their Hausdorff dimension is calculated. Previous results determining this quantity for random self-similar structures have relied on geometrical properties of an underlying metric space or the scaling factors being bounded uniformly away from 0. However, using a percolative argument, and taking advantage of the tree-like structure of the sets considered here, it is shown that conditions such as these are not necessary. The scaling factors of the recursively defined structures in consideration form what is known as a multiplicative cascade, and results about the height of this random object are also obtained.

A forwards induction policy is a type of greedy algorithm for Markov decision processes. It is straightforward to implement and is optimal for a large class of models, especially in stochastic resource allocation. In this paper we consider a model for the optimal allocation of resources in pre-clinical pharmaceutical research. We show that although they are not always strictly optimal, forwards induction policies perform well.

A weighted graph G is a pair (V, ℰ) containing vertex set V and edge set ℰ, where each edge e ∈ ℰ is associated with a weight We. A subgraph of G is a forest if it has no cycles. All forests on the graph G form a probability space, where the probability of each forest is proportional to the product of the weights of its edges. This paper aims to simulate forests exactly from the target distribution. Methods based on coupling from the past (CFTP) and rejection sampling are presented. Comparisons of these methods are given theoretically and via simulation.

The lying oracle problem is a problem of finding the optimal strategies in a two-person game where an oracle predicts the outcomes of coin flips and a player bets on the outcomes. The oracle announces whether the coin will land heads or tails, but may at times lie. We analyze the variant of the game which uses a biased coin, where the probability p that the coin lands heads is common knowledge. We determine optimal strategies for both the oracle and player, and we give an explicit expression for the expected payoff to the player when the coin is flipped n times and the oracle may lie at most k times.
