In the grammar of Dutch, a sentence is best defined as a prosodic unit the end of which is marked by a distinct falling or rising tone (see section 2.6).
A sentence is said to be complex if it contains more than one clause, where a clause is defined as the maximal sentence constituent containing a single verb, or (in case there are more verbs, one of which is an auxiliary) a single combination of a lexical verb and an auxiliary. (See appendix 3 for a list of the members of the closed class of auxiliaries.)
