This book has been written as part of the project “IDEALE Interplay between National Defence, Security and Low-Carbon Energy Policies: A Sustainability Transitions Perspective.” It has been funded by the Research Council of Finland (decision numbers 322667, 328717, and 352972) and the Finnish Environment Institute Syke.

I am grateful to many colleagues for their contributions to different parts of the project, making this book possible. First, I want to thank Johan Schot, in the capacity of my former foreperson in the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU), for influencing the formation of the project idea and supporting the development of the project proposal. My thinking on the potential negative side of sustainability transitions and the impact of defence policy on energy transitions was inspired by Johan. Second, I want to thank Marja Helena Sivonen, for being a lovely project partner and friend with whom to explore the topic of this book. She has gathered the empirical material with me, commented on the contents of the book, and been the coauthor in several peer-reviewed scientific articles that the project has produced. Thank you also to Claire Mosoni, who, as a part-time project member, provided information for the Estonia chapter and read through and commented on the other chapters.

I want to thank several people for commenting on different versions of this book’s chapters. I am indebted to Suvi Huttunen for reading the whole book draft at the end and providing excellent comments. My thanks go also to Matthew Hannon, Phil Johnstone, Laur Kanger, Jukka Leskelä, Jani Lukkarinen, Marianne Ryghaug, Ben Shafran, Gert Siniloo, and Veli-Pekka Tynkkynen for providing valuable comments on selected chapters. I, of course, remain responsible for any remaining inaccuracies. I also want to thank Bipashyee Ghosh, who helped to create an index for the book, and Satu Turtiainen, for making the figures look professional. Huge thanks go to all the people who agreed to be interviewed for this project. Without their input, the analyses carried out would not have been possible.

During the project I had the pleasure of coauthoring an article with Marie Claire Brisbois, Emma Hakala, Dhanasree Jayaram, and Marco Siddi. This process was instrumental in me getting more acquainted with security studies and becoming aware of the concept of positive security, on which I draw a great deal in this book. I have also had many discussions with colleagues in the European Union Cascades project and the European Consortium for Political Research Energy Group that have informed my thinking. I want to thank my former and current forepersons, Mikael Hildén and Johan Munck af Rosenschöld, for their valuable support, and my family for the joy and love they have given during the writing of this book. Finally, I want to remember a dear colleague, David Lazarevic, who passed away on September 1, 2023. He was my go-to person in the Finnish Environment Institute to debate and deliberate concepts and issues related to sustainability transitions. This book is dedicated to the memory of David.
