Summary

Parliament, councils (C) and great councils (GC)

At this great council, the clergy of Dublin, Kildare, Ossory and Ferns agreed to contribute to the grant of £60/13/4 towards a total of £66/13/4, needed to buy off Hugh O'Brien.

On 22 January a summons was issued to the archbishop of Dublin, all the other bishops and the following:

On 29 March 1378 the archbishop of Dublin was reimbursed £20 for his expenses in parliament. Absent from this parliament were the archbishop of Tuam and the bishops of Elphin, Emly, Killala, Kilmacduagh and Ardfert, as well as the keepers of the spiritualities of Ross.

The following were fined for non-attendance:

Bishops of Emly, Elphin, Achonry, Kilmacduagh and the guardians of the spiritualities of Ross (100 marks [£66/13/4] each) Dean and chapter and clergy of Cashel (40s.)

The bishop of Ferns was fined £10, though he was unfit to travel.

On 11 September 1380 the archbishops of Dublin, Cashel (or his vicar-general) and Tuam were summoned, along with the guardians of the spiritualities of Armagh and of Meath. The following bishops were also called: Kildare, Leighlin, Ossory, Ferns, Lismore and Waterford, Cork, Limerick, Cloyne, Clogher, Ardfert, Killaloe, Emly, Elphin, Down, Killala, Clonfert, Ross, Connor, Clonmacnoise, Raphoe, Kilmore and Derry. The above-mentioned abbots and priors were also summoned. The clergy granted a full tenth. On 24 December 1380 a royal writ for collection went out in the following words:

Rex venerabili in Christo patri R[oberto] eadem gratia archiepiscopo Dubliniensi, salutem. Cum praelati et clerus terrae nostrae Hiberniae in parliamento habito apud Dubliniam, die Sabbati in crastino Animarum proximo praeterito summonito et tento comparentes, de eorum assensu et libera voluntate inter cetera per ipsos in salvationem et defensionem dictae terrae nostrae, in dicto parliamento ordinata et concessa concesserunt quoddam subsidium, videlicet de temporalibus et spiritualibus suis taxatis, unam decimam pro anno proxime futuro secundum taxam iam currentem, ac de qualibet carrucata terrae temporalium suorum non taxatorum sex solidos octo denarios pro anno praedicto, terris suis taxatis ac non taxatis quas ipsi sumptibus propriis ad mensas suas colunt et glebis ecclesiarum omnino exceptis.
