This volume arose from a conference held at Trevelyan College in Durham in June 2002. The conference was organised under the auspices of the AHRB Research Centre for North-East England History and brought together many of the leading scholars in the field, the fruits of whose recent research is published here. Several people have helped to transform a series of conference papers into publishable essays, and we would like to single out the important contributions of Helen Dunsford of the University of Northumbria and Ben Dodds of the University of Durham. We would also like to express our gratitude to Margaret McAllister, who administered the conference, and to David Rollason, who, in his capacity as the director of the Centre for North-East England History, has done much to foster a collaborative model of research which we hope is evident in the essays that follow.
