Summary
The jugular foramen is a large cavity positioned at the base of the skull, with its posterior border being the occipital bone and its anterior border being the petrous portion of the temporal bone. Through its aperture passes the glossopharyngeal (innervates the swallowing muscles), vagus (provides parasympathetic innervation to the heart), and accessory nerves (innervates muscles that allow for shrugging shoulders) as well as the jugular vein.
