The L4 nerve root originates from the lumbar spinal cord region, the third of the four regions of the spine from top to bottom. This nerve root is part of the cauda equina as the spinal cord ends at the L1–L2 vertebral level. It eventually exits through the intervertebral foramen between L4 and L5 vertebral bodies.
