5 - Cosmopolitan Islam
The Standard Islam of the Scholars
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 18 May 2020
Summary
“Cosmopolitan Islam” refers to the Islam of scholars, an Islam that, as an ideal, is uninflicted by time or location. The myths of Cosmopolitan Islam are unpacked, and this chapter demonstrates that Cosmopolitan Muslims, the authorities who are “professional Muslims,” are also imbedded in local culture – which affects their understanding of even the Official Islam that they teach.
