‘This is a determinacoun of a doctor of divinite ayaynst theim that says it is not lawfull to haue holy writte & other bookes in englishe.’ The Compendyous Treatise, or ‘First seiþ Bois’, a Wycliffite tract on Bible translation. Reworking of part of a Latin tract by Richard Ullerston in Vienna, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek MS 4133, dated 1401 (Anne Hudson, ‘The Debate on Bible Translation, Oxford 1401’, English Historical Review 90 (1975), pp. 1–18). Ed. Curt F. Bühler, ‘A Lollard Tract: On Translating the Bible into English’, Medium Ævum 7 (1938), pp. 170–183, from Camb. Trinity Col B.14.50, collated with six other MSS, including MS 298 below; he was not aware of the present MS. Text also printed Deanesly, pp. 439–445 from the same MS (pace IMEP 11, which notes that Deanesly used Camb. Trinity Col B.1.26). Wells Rev. 2:529 [55]; IPMEP 37. The present text is a s. xvi copy in two hands. The section which in Bühler's edition is lines 229–240, appears in the present MS at the very end of the text (on pp. 232–233), but it has been marked off with brackets and the words ‘ante ad tale signum #’ in the margin. There is also a mark ‘#’ for insertion and the words ‘ut postea’ on p. 231.
