Summary

Transliteration from Russian follows the system used by the Slavonic and East European Review. In the text soft-signs are omitted in proper names and deviant forms of some proper names are preferred where they have become familiar in English-language texts.

Where possible, references to Dostoyevsky's works and letters are to the Academy edition, which had reached volume 29 at the time this book went to press. Following Professor Catteau's own preference in the French edition of his book, references to Dostoyevsky's notebooks are to the versions published in volumes 77, 83 and 86 of Literary Heritage (Literaturnoye nasledstvo).
