One rate survives for this parish located six miles west of Tiverton. The Cruwys family was listed as the principal residents in this rate and as the largest landowners in the subsidy of 1581.

Note: The rate, a fair copy, has been written on a sheet of paper which has been folded to make four pages each of which is approximately 8 inches in width and 10¾ inches in length. The numerals are Roman with the exception of the document sequence number. John Cruse was recorded as the wealthiest parishioner in the 1524 subsidy list.

[illegible] a rate made concluded and agreed uppon the thirtith day of November in the year 1604 for the mainetenannce of the Church of Morchard Cruise in the Countie of Devon and for all manners matters and Chardges concernynge the church there by Hugh Croock beinge churchwarden in the behalfe of Mary Mander at more and George her sonne and Thomas Melhuishe Thomas Wright George Bodley and John Chamberlen sidemen for the time beinge there and divers other inhabitance of Morchard Cruise, aforesaid all wch have hereunto sett there hands

Also it is further Concluded agreed and confirmed by all the persons aforesaid that the four said sidemen for the time beinge three or tow of them at the lest shall go wth the warding for the time beinge to gather the forsaid rate and the same collected to remaine in their hands and after ward to be delivered to the warden as occasion shall require to use The same and the sonday next uppon Easter day yearelie they all To geve in their accompts to the pishoners of Morchard aforesaid of their receipts and paiment and the said [ac]counts to be writen then and theare in a Boke to be made and kept.
