Summary
Gilles Deleuze, one of the most significant French philosophers of the last century, drew profoundly on Spinoza as he challenged and reconceived the assumptions of metaphysics and epistemology. His wide-ranging oeuvre includes texts on art, literature, and cinema; works on psychoanalysis and politics co-authored with Félix Guattari; and critical commentaries on Spinoza, Leibniz, Kant, Nietzsche, and Bergson. Expressionism in Philosophy: Spinoza (1968/1990) is a substantial study of Spinoza’s doctrines of substance and attributes, mind–body parallelism, and finite existence, while Spinoza: Practical Philosophy (1970/1988) explores the ethical and political dimensions of Spinoza’s thought. Deleuze’s interpretation of Spinoza is hugely influential, especially in continental philosophy where it has been seminal for how Spinoza’s thinking is understood and used.
