Summary
For the political evolution of the archipelagoes of Oceania as we know them today, the nineteenth century was of crucial importance. In conventional historiography, the most striking feature of historical development during that century has been the establishment of colonial rule over virtually every archipelago. While the century started with barely any European colonial presence (except for the Marianas, considered an outpost of the Spanish Philippines, and Norfolk Island, considered an outpost of the British penal settlement in Australia), at the turn of the twentieth century every island was being claimed directly or indirectly as falling under the dominion of one of the Western powers.
