Deinde fateor in minore nunc esse fama, quam pro ipsius meritis, aut pro laudatoris commodo. Neque id valde mirandum, quum et vitæ splendore caruerit, et ejus scripta, privatarum causarum finibus fere contenta, res historicas et politicas non nisi obiter attingant. Quod autem ei plurimum apud nos recentiores nocuit, (nam apud antiquos ejus laus mansit integra,) sunt ejus virtutes ejusmodi, ut quo magis existimatores idoneos delectant, tanto minus a lectorum turba sentiantur. Neque parum ejus lumini offecit exemplarium gravis corruptela.
