Localization in Periodic Potentials

  • This book provides a comprehensive treatment of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation with a periodic potential; in particular, the localized modes supported by the periodic potential. It takes the mean-field model of the Bose–Einstein condensation as the starting point of analysis and addresses the existence and stability of localized modes. The mean-field model is simplified further to the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations, the nonlinear Dirac equations, and the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations. One of the important features of such systems is the existence of band gaps in the wave transmission spectra, which support stationary localized modes known as the gap solitons. These localized modes realise a balance between periodicity, dispersion and nonlinearity of the physical system. Written for researchers in applied mathematics, this book mainly focuses on the mathematical properties of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation. It also serves as a reference for theoretical physicists interested in localization in periodic potentials.

  • After a forty-year lull, the study of word-values in groups has sprung back into life with some spectacular new results in finite group theory. These are largely motivated by applications to profinite groups, including the solution of an old problem of Serre. This book presents a comprehensive account of the known results, both old and new. The more elementary methods are developed from scratch, leading to self-contained proofs and improvements of some classic results about infinite soluble groups. This is followed by a detailed introduction to more advanced topics in finite group theory, and a full account of the applications to profinite groups. The author presents proofs of some very recent results and discusses open questions for further research. This self-contained account is accessible to research students, but will interest all research workers in group theory.

  • Written to complement standard texts on commutative algebra, this short book gives complete and relatively easy proofs of important results, including the standard results involving localisation of formal smoothness (M. André) and localisation of complete intersections (L. Avramov), some important results of D. Popescu and André on regular homomorphisms, and some results from A. Grothendieck's EGA on smooth homomorphisms. The authors make extensive use of the André–Quillen homology of commutative algebras, but only up to dimension 2, which is easy to construct, and they deliberately avoid using simplicial methods. The book also serves as an accessible introduction to some advanced topics and techniques. The only prerequisites are a basic course in commutative algebra and the first definitions in homological algebra.

  • This 2010 book was the first devoted to the theory of p-adic wavelets and pseudo-differential equations in the framework of distribution theory. This relatively recent theory has become increasingly important in the last decade with exciting applications in a variety of fields, including biology, image analysis, psychology, and information science. p-Adic mathematical physics also plays an important role in quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, the theory of strings, quantum gravity and cosmology, and solid state physics.   • This volume provides a systematic presentation of the theory of differential tensor algebras and their categories of modules. It involves reduction techniques which have proved to be very useful in the development of representation theory of finite dimensional algebras. The main results obtained with these methods are presented in an elementary and self contained way. The authors provide a fresh point of view of well known facts on tame and wild differential tensor algebras, on tame and wild algebras, and on their modules. But there are also some new results and some new proofs. Their approach presents a formal alternative to the use of bocses (bimodules over categories with coalgebra structure) with underlying additive categories and pull-back reduction constructions. Professional mathematicians working in representation theory and related fields, and graduate students interested in homological algebra will find much of interest in this book.

  • This is the first elementary introduction to Galois cohomology and its applications. The first part is self-contained and provides the basic results of the theory, including a detailed construction of the Galois cohomology functor, as well as an exposition of the general theory of Galois descent. The author illustrates the theory using the example of the descent problem of conjugacy classes of matrices. The second part of the book gives an insight into how Galois cohomology may be used to solve algebraic problems in several active research topics, such as inverse Galois theory, rationality questions or the essential dimension of algebraic groups. Fusion Systems in Algebra and Topology

  • A fusion system over a p-group S is a category whose objects form the set of all subgroups of S, whose morphisms are certain injective group homomorphisms, and which satisfies axioms first formulated by Puig that are modelled on conjugacy relations in finite groups. The definition was originally motivated by representation theory, but fusion systems also have applications to local group theory and to homotopy theory. The connection with homotopy theory arises through classifying spaces which can be associated to fusion systems and which have many of the nice properties of p-completed classifying spaces of finite groups. Beginning with a detailed exposition of the foundational material, the authors then proceed to discuss the role of fusion systems in local finite group theory, homotopy theory and modular representation theory. This book serves as a basic reference and as an introduction to the field, particularly for students and other young mathematicians.

  • The biennial meetings at São Carlos have helped create a worldwide community of experts and young researchers working on singularity theory, with a special focus on applications to a wide variety of topics in both pure and applied mathematics. The tenth meeting, celebrating the 60th birthdays of Terence Gaffney and Maria Aparecida Soares Ruas, was a special occasion attracting the best known names in the area. This volume contains contributions by the attendees, including three articles written or co-authored by Gaffney himself, and survey articles on the existence of Milnor fibrations, global classifications and graphs, pairs of foliations on surfaces, and Gaffney's work on equisingularity.
