Stellar surveys and dynamical models have recently led to important progress on understanding the dynamical structure of the Milky Way’s bar and central box/peanut bulge. This talk briefly reviews the density structure of the bulge and bar from star count tomography, the cylindrical rotation of bulge stars, and the measurements of their stellar masses and pattern speed that have been obtained by fitting dynamical models to the combined star count and line-of-sight velocity data. Recent work deriving absolute proper motions throughout the bulge from the VIRAC survey and Gaia has led to a new 3D measurement of the barred bulge kinematics which is expected to greatly improve the dynamical models, and has already confirmed the relatively slow pattern speed (∼40 kms−1 kpc−1) obtained from the previous dynamical and gas-dynamical modelling.

. We present a significantly improved version of our numerical code JASMINE, that can now solve the Jeans equations for axisymmetric models of stellar systems, composed of an arbitrary number of stellar populations, a Dark Matter halo, and a central Black Hole. The stellar components can have different structural (density profile, flattening, mass, scale length), dynamical (rotational support, velocity dispersion anisotropy), and population (age, metallicity, Initial Mass Function, mass-to-light ratio) properties. These models, when combined with observations, will allow to investigate important issues, such as quantifying the systematic effects of IMF variations, of mass-to-light ratio gradients, and of different stellar kinematic components (e.g. counter rotating disks, kinematically decoupled cores) on luminosity-weighted properties. The developed analytical and numerical framework aims at modeling Early-Type Galaxies, but it can also be applied to dwarf Spheroidal galaxies and Globular Clusters.

The LIGO/Virgo detections of gravitational waves from merging black holes of ≃ 30 solar mass suggest progenitor stars of low metallicity (Z/Z⊙ ≲ 0.3). In this talk I will provide constrains on where the progenitors of GW150914 and GW170104 may have formed, based on advanced models of galaxy formation and evolution combined with binary population synthesis models. First I will combine estimates of galaxy properties (star-forming gas metallicity, star formation rate and merger rate) across cosmic time to predict the low redshift BBH merger rate as a function of present day host galaxy mass, formation redshift of the progenitor system and different progenitor metallicities. I will show that the signal is dominated by binaries formed at the peak of star formation in massive galaxies with and binaries formed recently in dwarf galaxies. Then, I will present what very high resolution hydrodynamic simulations of different galaxy types can learn us about their black hole populations.

The Milky Way is a barred galaxy whose central bulge has a box/peanut shape and consists of multiple stellar populations with different orbit distributions. This review describes dynamical and chemo-dynamical equilibrium models for the Bulge, Bar, and inner Disk based on recent survey data. Some of the highlighted results include (i) stellar mass determinations for the different Galactic components, (ii) the need for a core in the dark matter distribution, (iii) a revised pattern speed putting corotation at ~6 kpc, (iv) the strongly barred distribution of the metal-rich stars, and (v) the radially varying dynamics of the metal-poor stars which is that of a thick disk-bar outside ~1 kpc, but changes into an inner centrally concentrated component with several possible origins. On-going and future surveys will refine this picture, making the Milky Way a unique case for studying how similar galaxies form and evolve.

We investigate here the effect of the selection function on the metallicity distribution function (MDF) as well as on the vertical metallicity gradient by studying similar lines-of-sight using four different spectroscopic surveys (APOGEE, LAMOST, RAVE and Gaia-ESO) which have different targeting strategies and therefore different selection functions. We create mock fields for each survey using two stellar population synthesis models, GALAXIA and TRILEGAL. The effects of the selection function are studied in detail by applying the selection function to the two models and comparing the MDF as well as vertical metallicity gradients of the selected sources with that of the underlying sample. We find a negligible selection function effect on the MDF as well as on the vertical metallicity gradients for APOGEE, RAVE and LAMOST, and estimate a mean vertical metallicity gradient of -0.241±0.028 dex kpc−1.

The metallicity distribution function (MDF) of the stellar components of the Milky Way hold valuable information regarding the processes that have taken place in the evolution of our Galaxy. In this proceeding, we investigate updates concerning the MDF now that the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS) catalogue has been released and that trigonometric distances are available. In particular, vertical changes and skewness of the MDF are investigated, together with the properties of the metal-rich stars in the sample, at different positions in the Galaxy.

We present an evolutionary model for the origin of Andromeda II, a dwarf spheroidal satellite of M31. The model is an extension of the scenario proposed by Łokas et al. (2014) involving a major merger between two gas-rich disky dwarf galaxies.

Stars in low-mass dwarf galaxies show a larger range in their chemical properties than those in the Milky Way halo. The slower star formation efficiency make dwarf galaxies ideal systems for testing nucleosynthetic yields. Not only are alpha-poor stars found at lower metallicities, and a higher fraction of carbon-enhanced stars, but we are also finding stars in dwarf galaxies that appear to be iron-rich. These are compared with yields from a variety of supernova predictions.

Gravitational waves (GW) are a natural consequence of Einstein's theory of gravity (general relativity), and minute distortions of space-time. Gravitational Wave Astronomy is an emerging branch of observational astronomy which aims to use GWs to collect observational data about objects such as neutron stars and black holes, about events such as supernovae and about the early universe shortly after the big bang.This field will evolve to become an established component of 21st century multi-messenger astronomy, and will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with gamma-ray, x-ray, optical, infrared and radio astronomers in exploring the cosmos. In this paper, we state a recent theoretical study on GW sources, and present the results of our studies on the field using a binary population synthesis (BPS) approach, which was designed to investigate the formation of many interesting binary-related objects, including close double white dwarfs, AM CVn stars, ultra-compact X-ray binaries(UCXBs), double neutron stars, double stellar black holes. Here we report how BPS can be used to determine the GW radiation from double compact objects.

This short review is intended to be a snapshot of some recent observational facts and open questions regarding the study of chemical evolution in the innermost regions of the Milky Way, as traced by spectroscopy of cool giant and supergiant stars.

Only twelve of the > 76 Local Group galaxies contain globular clusters, showing a broad range of specific frequencies. Here we summarize the properties of these globular cluster systems. Many host galaxies contain very old globulars, but in some globular cluster formation may have been delayed. An age range of several Gyr is common. Except for the inner regions of the spirals, old globular clusters tend to be metal-poor. Increasingly, light element variations and hints of multiple stellar populations are being found also in extragalactic globulars. There is ample evidence for globular cluster accretion from dwarfs onto massive galaxies, but its magnitude has yet to be quantified. Caution is needed to avoid overinterpreting indirect evidence.

This review will attempt to draw a state of the art observational picture of the Galactic bulge. The main chemical, kinematic and evolutionary properties of the gas and stellar populations in the barred bulge and towards the Galactic center region will be discussed in the context of the possible formation scenarios. Future perspectives for our comprehension of the complex structure of the Galactic bulge from ongoing and foreseen optical and infrared surveys will be also highlighted.

Studies of stellar populations have been reinvigorated during the last decade by the advent of large-area sky surveys such as SDSS, 2MASS, RAVE, and others. These data, together with theoretical and modeling advances, are revolutionizing our understanding of the nature of the Milky Way, and galaxy formation and evolution in general. The abundance of substructure in the multi-dimensional space of various observables, such as position, kinematics, and metallicity, is by now proven beyond doubt, and demonstrates the importance of mergers in the growth of galaxies. Unlike smooth models that involve simple components, the new data reviewed here clearly exhibit many irregular structures, such as the Sagittarius dwarf tidal stream and the Virgo and Pisces overdensities in the halo, and the Monoceros stream closer to the Galactic plane. These recent developments have made it clear that the Milky Way is a complex and dynamic structure, one that is still being shaped by the merging of neighboring smaller galaxies. Here we summarize developments over the last decade in our mapping of the stellar content of the Milky Way, as well as recent attempts to map the dark matter halo by Loebman et al. (2012) and ISM dust distribution by Berry et al. (2012). We also briefly discuss the next generation of wide-field sky surveys, exemplified by Gaia and LSST, which will improve measurement precision manyfold, and comprise billions of individual stars.

The formation and evolution of the heavy neutron-capture elements (Z > 37) are to date not well understood. Therefore, abundance and galactic chemical evolution (GCE) studies of these heavy elements may carry key information to this open question. Strontium (Sr) is one of the two heavy elements (Sr and Ba) that show intrinsically very strong absorption lines even in extremely metal-poor stars (and remains detectable at low spectral resolution). Hence, the 4077 Å Sr II line provides a unique insight into the behaviour of heavy neutron-capture elements at all metallicities and resolutions. Here the focus is on strontium, its 3D and NLTE (non-local thermodynamic equilibrium) corrections, as well as chemical evolution.

We use the full SED of a well observed dwarf galaxy, I Zw 18, to evaluate what inferences can be made about very high-redshift galaxies from their UV SED's alone.

Based on the database of 56 supernovae (SNe) events discovered in 3838 galaxies of the southern hemisphere, we compute the rate of SNe of different types along the Hubble sequence normalized to the optical and near-infrared (NIR) luminosities as well as to the stellar mass of the galaxies. We find that the rates of Type Ia SNe show a dependence on both morphology and colors of the galaxies, and therefore, on the star-formation activity. The rate of SNe Ia can be explained by assuming that at least 15% of Ia events in spiral galaxies originate in relatively young stellar populations. We also find that the rates show no modulation with nuclear activity or environment.

At high-z the most superdense massive galaxies are supposed to be the result of gas-rich mergers resulting in compact remnant (Khochfar & Silk (2006); Naab et al. (2007)). After this, dry mergers are expected to be the mechanism that moves these very massive galaxies towards the current stellar mass size relation. Whitin these merging scenarios, a non-negligible fraction (1-10%) of these galaxies is expected to survive since that epoch retaining their compactness and presenting old stellar populations in the past universe.Using the NYU Value-Added Galaxy Catalog (DR6), we find only a tiny fraction of galaxies (~0.03%) with re ≤ 1.5 kpc and M* ≥ 8x1010M⊙ in the local Universe (z~0.2). Surprisingly, they are relatively young (~2Gyr) and metal rich ([Z/H]~0.2) These results have been published in Trujillo et al. (2009)

We have examined in detail both the resolved and integrated stellar content of a representative sample of galaxies in the Virgo cluster to constrain plausible formation/evolution scenarios for them. Systematic variations in age and metallicity gradients along the Hubble sequence are found such that the gradients become more negative for later types. Combined with correlations of the above stellar properties with both structure and environment, these data highlight the significance of merging in the assembly of massive spheroids and environmental phenomena (gas removal/interactions) in the evolution of disks and dwarf systems. Our data also provide useful perspectives on a number of important topics in the recent literature.

The Galactic bulge is the central spheroid of our Galaxy, containing about one quarter of the total stellar mass of the Milky Way (Mbulge = 1.8 × 1010M⊙; Sofue, Honma & Omodaka 2009). Being older than the disk, it is the first massive component of the Galaxy to have collapsed into stars. Understanding its structure, and the properties of its stellar population, is therefore of great relevance for galaxy formation models. I will review our current knowledge of the bulge properties, with special emphasis on chemical abundances, recently measured for several hundred stars.

Gaia will provide parallaxes and proper motions with accuracy ranging from 10 to 1000 microarcsecond on up to one billion stars. Most of these will be disk stars: for an unreddened K giant at 6 kpc, it will measure the distance accurate to 2% and the transverse velocity to an accuracy of about 1 km/s. Gaia will observe tracers of Galactic structure, kinematics, star formation and chemical evolution across the whole HR diagram, including Cepheids, RR Lyrae, white dwarfs, F dwarfs and HB stars. Onboard low resolution spectrophotometry will permit – in addition to an effective temperature estimate – dwarf/giant discrimination, metallicity measurement and extinction determination. For the first time, then, Gaia will provide us with a three-dimensional spatial/properties map and at least a two-dimensional velocity map of these tracers. (3D velocities will be obatined for the brighter sources from the onboard RV spectrograph). This will be a goldmine of information from which to learn about the origin and evolution of the Galactic disk. I briefly review the Gaia mission, and then show how the expected astrometric accuracies translate into distance and velocity accuracies and statistics. I then briefly examine the impact Gaia should have on a few scientific areas relevant to the Galactic disk, specifically disk structure and formation, the age–metallicity–velocity relation, the mass–luminosity relation, stellar clusters and spiral structure. Concerning spiral arms, I note how a better determination of their locations and pattern speed from their OB star population, plus a better reconstruction of the Sun's orbit over the past billion years (from integration through the Gaia-measured gravitational potential) will allow us to assess the possible role of spiral arm crossings in ice ages and mass extinctions on the Earth.
