Space probes suffer from a fundamental problem, which is the limited energy available for their operation. Energy supply is essential for continuous operation and ultimately the most important sub-system for its sustainable functioning. Considering, for instance, the last space probe put on Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko, called “Philae”, which was sent by Rosetta (http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Space_Science/Rosetta), to operate and to monitor comet activity, its operation was jeopardized due to the fact that it landed on a shadowed zone (no direct sunlight). Since its operational energy was only based on solar harvesters, the energy for its operation was limited by solar energy availability. In this paper a study on a viable alternative based on wireless power transmission is presented and discussed at the system level. It is proved that, using current technology, it is possible to create alternatives or supplement to existing power sources such as solar panels to power up these important space probes and to secure their operation.

Here we demonstrate wireless energy transfer that exploits the conductivity and permittivity of soil to create a potential gradient on the surface around an earthed electrode, distributing electrical energy over the area. This generated surface potential can be amplified using a special standing-wave receiver for harnessing the distributed energy. We have experimentally mapped the surface potential around the electrode and plotted the received energy covering an area of 1200 m2. Key operating parameters are determined with a discussion on optimizing the system efficiency. This technique could address the challenge of distributing electrical energy to many low power devices over large outdoor areas without the use of wires.

In this paper, we present a near-field microwave microscopy method for the characterization of dielectric materials samples in the Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) band. The system proposed is composed of a probe coupled to a dielectric resonator (DR) operating in the TE011 mode. Latter this is used to fix the resonance frequency of the resonator at 2.45 GHz. This system is used for the characterization of dielectric samples with accuracy and high spatial resolution, knowing that they do not have predetermined forms, but a small plane surface.The same device is used for a multi-frequency characterization (4–20 GHz) using resonance frequencies of the cavity instead of one resonance frequency of the DR.

A systematic procedure is developed to calculate ground vibration at any specific location in layered medium due to harmonic loadings applied at a circular plate on the medium. In the procedure, the technique decomposing the interaction tractions between excited plate and layered medium will be employed. The decomposed tractions will automatically match boundary values of general solutions of three dimensional wave equations in cylindrical coordinates. In numerical results, the effect of layered stratum on ground vibration will be investigated and how ground vibration in layered medium decreases with depth will be presented. Also, from the numerical results, one can observe ground vibration may not decay monotonically along distance away from vibration source. The presented scheme is proved to be effective and efficient for accurately predicting near-field ground response to harmonic loadings applied at a rigid circular plate on layered medium. Comments on the presented scheme and numerical results will be given.

The direct measurement of the radiation pattern of an antenna is often unreachable. A near-field sampling followed by a near-field/far-field (NF/FF) transformation is therefore substituted. This process is, in most cases, applied to antennas placed in free-space or over a perfect electric conductor. On the contrary, few results concern real environment conditions. Nevertheless, it is well known that the nature of the soil can drastically change the radiating characteristic of an antenna. The lack of information about the behavior of the antenna in real conditions can give rise to substantial errors in the evaluation of the performances of electromagnetic devices. The aim of this paper is then to propose a new NF/FF transformation able to reliably supply the field radiated by an antenna placed over a plane, homogeneous, dielectric, and lossy interface. The method is based on the cylindrical-wave expansion of the electric field. The real soil is taken into account by means of its reflection coefficients. First results are given for simple antennas and for both transverse magnetic and transverse electric polarizations.
