Key Learning Points
1. Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) is a complex biological process in which an acute injury leads to sequential organ dysfunction.
2. The pathogenesis of MODS is still poorly understood but thought to be due to a dysregulated pro- and anti-inflammatory response to illness.
3. The clinical features of MODS comprise systemic inflammatory response syndrome plus sequential organ failure over hours or days.
4. To date, no clinical treatments have been shown to be beneficial in specifically treating MODS.
5. Evidence-based supportive care, alongside management of the underlying illness, is the current mainstay of treatment.
