The influence of the concentration of carbon black nanoparticles on the mechanical behavior of a structural adhesive was studied to evaluate and understand the stiffness, strength, and deformation behavior of a reinforced epoxy adhesive. Two carbon black nanoparticles with different dielectric properties and sizes (Monarch® 120 and Vulcan® XC72R) were studied. A bi-component structural epoxy adhesive was selected. Specimens with different concentrations of carbon black were manufactured (0, 5, 10, and 20% on volume of resin) for each type of nanoparticle. The specimens were cured in a hydraulic hot-plates press machine. The mechanical behavior of the adhesives was found not to vary significantly as a function of carbon black nanoparticles amount. A scanning electron microscopy analysis was performed to evaluate the fracture surface. The fracture surfaces of specimens were correlated with the mechanical response obtained through tensile tests.

Three classical methods (Pseudo-Avrami, Ozawa, and Mo models) were used to correlate nonisothermal melt and cold crystallization kinetics data of neat poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and PHB/carbon black compounds, measured by differential scanning calorimetry. The applicability of the three models was tested comparing model predictions with experimental data. Results suggest that Pseudo-Avrami model fits the experimental data well. Ozawa model does not fit data well, as verified by the large uncertainties and unphysical values of the fitting parameters. Mo model may be considered adequate if moderately deviations could be tolerated. Datasets of all compositions are included as the Supplementary Information.

Compounds of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and carbon black (CB) with CB content ranging between 0.5 and 10% were prepared in an internal mixer. The effect of heating and cooling rates on the crystallization and melting of PHB/CB compounds was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and its morphology analyzed by optical microscopy (OM). Results showed that PHB and its compounds partially crystallize from the melt during cooling and partially cold crystallize on reheating, with the amount of polymer crystallizing in each stage depending strongly on the cooling rate. Melting is usually shown in DSC scans as complex (double) peaks, which are influenced by the heating/reheating thermal cycles. The melting and cold crystallization temperatures, and the rates of phase change depend strongly on the cooling and heating rates and CB content. CB acts as a nucleating agent, promoting the melt and cold crystallization of PHB as well as increasing the number of spherulites, with a mild effect on the melting transition. Light microscopy images suggest that a secondary crystallization of PHB also occurs during storage at room temperature.

To optimize the structure of the flexible piezoresistive sensor based on conductive polymer composite and widen the workable pressure range, a piezoresistive sensor with a multilayered structure based on carbon nanotubes/carbon black/silicone rubber conductive composite was designed and investigated. Different from the traditional monolayer structure, this novel multilayered sensor consisted of three microstructured piezoresistive composite films. The experimental data showed that the electrical resistance of the sensor varied regularly with a wide range of applied pressure (0–1.8 MPa at least). The high sensitivity, high flexibility, facile fabrication, and low cost were also the advantages of this pressure sensor. In addition, the piezoresistive mechanism was studied and shown to be the synergistic effects of the contact resistance mechanism and bulk resistance mechanism. Factors influencing the piezoresistive properties were also investigated. Moreover, the consecutive loading tests verified the feasibility and stability to use this sensor element for pressure measurement.

A tomographic heating holder for transmission electron microscopy that can be used to study supported catalysts at temperatures of up to ~1,500°C is described. The specimen is placed in direct thermal contact with a tungsten filament that is oriented perpendicular to the axis of the holder without using a support film, allowing tomographic image acquisition at high specimen tilt angles with minimum optical shadowing. We use the holder to illustrate the evolution of the active phases of Pt nanoparticles on carbon black and PtPd nanoparticles on γ-alumina with temperature. Particle size distributions and changes in active surface area are quantified from tilt series of images acquired after subjecting the specimens to increasing temperatures. The porosity of the alumina support and the sintering mechanisms of the catalysts are shown to depend on distance from the heating filament.
