This paper introduces a three-substrate layered transmitarray design that avoids the use of vias, aiming to produce broadband orbital angular momentum (OAM) vortex beams within the Ka-band. The suggested element configuration accomplishes a full 360∘ transmission phase while upholding a 1-dB transmission loss, with an overall thickness measuring 3.4 mm (equivalent to 0.34λ0 at 30.0 GHz). Its balanced unit cell arrangement amplifies its effectiveness in applications involving dual polarization. We examine the transmitarray behavior across four OAM modes (+1, +2, +3, +4 ), unveiling notable mode purity at operating frequency. Specifically, a broadband OAM vortex beam is achieved for the +1 mode during simulation. A square aperture transmitarray fed by a horn antenna is fabricated and measured to validate these simulated findings. Experimental results confirm the successful broadband vortex beam generation for $l = +1$ mode across the frequency spectrum from 27.0 to 40.0 GHz, approximately 43.3%. Additionally, the proposed transmitarray achieves a peak gain of 21.7 dBi, accompanied by an 11.8% aperture efficiency. Noteworthy is the consistent maintenance of mode purity above 86%.

A long-range, compact, wideband Ultra High Frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) tag is proposed. The design features a triangular patch, designed to achieve wideband impedance matching. The tag exhibit −10 dB bandwidth from 753 to 917 MHz with a substrate thickness of 1.575 mm. The overall size of the tag is 121 × 30 × 1.575 mm3. The gain and bandwidth for varying substrate thickness is investigated. Further, two parasitic strips are designed alongside the patch to operate the tag more effectively at Federal Communications Commission (FCC) band in simultaneous with European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) band with increased read range. With parasitic strips, the tag exhibits −10 dB bandwidth from 766.5 to 896.5 MHz and 905 to 943.6 MHz which covers the bandwidth requirements in Europe, Asia, and North America. A prototype of the proposed tag is fabricated and experimentally tested with the RFID Higgs 4 IC. The tag provides a read range of over 14 m in 865–870 MHz and 13 m in 902–928 MHz when the tag is operated in free space and a read range of over 10.2 m in 865–870 MHz range and 10.3 m in 902–928 MHz range when mounted on a metallic surface of size of 200 × 200 m2 . The performance parameters of the designed tag are also compared with some commercially available designs.

A single-layer polarization converting metasurface (PCMS) with wideband is presented for polarization conversion and radar cross-section (RCS) reduction. The proposed PCMS is composed of metallic biconic shape resonator imprinted on a metal-backed F4BM dielectric substrate of relative permittivity 2.2 and loss tangent 0.001. The unit cell has a compact size of 0.16$\lambda_\mathrm{o} \times 0.16\lambda_\mathrm{o}$. A comprehensive parametric analysis, angular sensitivity study, bistatic and monostatic RCS analysis are conducted by illuminating the proposed PCMS using linearly polarized (LP) plane waves. The PCMS converts LP electromagnetic waves to their orthogonal polarization state in the frequency band of 8.7–24.8 GHz resulting in polarization conversion ratio over 90% with a fractional bandwidth of 96%. Additionally, the developed structure is applied in chessboard configuration, using phase cancellation techniques for RCS reduction, that achieve 10 dB RCS reduction across a wideband of 7.9–23.4 GHz. The unit cell and its rotated version has a cross-polarization reflection phase difference of (${180}\pm {37}{^\circ}$) in the operating band, which fulfill the criteria for RCS reduction. The chessboard configuration exhibits a scattering pattern with four strong lobes that deviates from the normal incident path because of the phase cancellation in normal direction. The experimental results are in good agreement with the simulated result. Applications for the developed structure include antenna design (gain enhancement and beam steering), target hiding, imaging, and microwave communications.

In this research, a novel polarization reconfigurable fractal antenna with high gain is proposed for wideband applications. This antenna consists of a Koch curve based hexagonal ring patch, two Positive-Intrinsic-Negative (PIN) diodes, and partial ground. The patch is positioned on a Rogers RT/Duroid 5880 substrate (ϵr = 2.2) with overall dimensions 33 × 30 × 1.6 mm3. It has three frequency bands with three different cases i.e., case I, 3–7.91 (90%); case II, 3–7.73 (88.16%); and case III, 3.54–6.7 GHz (61.7%). As a result, the proposed antenna’s impedance bandwidth (IBW) offers constant wideband coverage ranging from 3–7.91 GHz (90%). The axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) is below 3 dB over 3.6–6.9 (62.86%) and 3.33–7.14 GHz (72.78%) for LHCP (Case I) and RHCP modes (Case II), respectively. The value for LP mode (Case III) is 3.54–6.7 GHz (61.7%). A peak realized gains of 4.75, 5.07, and 3.8 dBi are achieved at 6.2, 6.3, and 6 GHz for Case I, Case II, and Case III, respectively. Both linear and circular polarization prototype was developed and the performance was verified through measurements. The design confirms good polarization-reconfigurable characteristics within the band of 3.91 – 7.91 GHz.

This paper presents a compact and ultra-wideband high-efficiency microwave rectifier for wireless power transmission (WPT) applications. The input-matching-network utilizes a compact asymmetric coupled transmission line structure, contributing to wideband performance. The rectifier adopts a voltage-doubler topology, resulting in a smooth input impedance across a wide bandwidth. The working principle of the asymmetric coupled transmission line matching network is analyzed. Simulation and measurement are conducted on the proposed rectifier. The fabricated prototype demonstrates a wide bandwidth of 162.5% (0.3–2.9 GHz with the power conversion efficiency (PCE) exceeding 60% at an input power of 18 dBm. Even at an input power of 10 dBm, the measured PCE remains above 50% over the working band. The proposed ultra-wideband rectifier shows promising potential for WPT applications including wireless powering of low-power electronic devices and sensors.

A fourth-order bandpass filter with dual-wide passbands is proposed in this article. The novelty of the proposed work is the realization of a dual-band bandpass filter with closely spaced passbands, wide passband bandwidth, high rejection between the passbands, using a novel combination of open stub tapped series coupled lines (CLs) and shunt transmission line loaded with end connected CLs. The characteristics of the proposed dual-wideband bandpass filter are investigated by adopting even–odd mode analysis. The transmission zeros generated by the transmission line loaded with an end-connected CL and open stub are utilized to achieve a high skirt rate. A rejection better than 55 dB is achieved with a single transmission zero between the two passbands indicating high isolation and close passbands. The dual-wideband filter is designed and manufactured to operate at 1.33 and 2.32 GHz. The experimented 3-dB fractional bandwidths of the two pass frequency bands are 40.6% and 24.13%. The proposed filter’s tested frequency responses agree well with simulated results. The proposed device can be used in various applications such as telecommunications, satellite communications, radar systems, imaging, and spectroscopy.

This paper presents a pattern reconfigurable antenna that accomplishes wideband and multibeam characteristics. The antenna design comprises a cross-slot radiator as the primary element and reconfigurable partially reflecting surface (PRS) layer placed above and below the cross-slot radiator. This configuration allows the antenna to adapt its radiation patterns effectively. The choice of the cross-slot radiator is based on its capability to offer wideband characteristics. The PRS layer consists of a precisely arranged array of 4×4 unit cells, incorporating PIN diodes into both the upper and lower PRS layers. The direction of radiation pattern can be changed by altering operating states of the PIN diodes on the PRS layer. The antenna operates in three distinct states, each exhibiting a unique radiation pattern. The antenna produces broadside, backward, and bidirectional radiation patterns. It demonstrates effective pattern reconfigurability across the frequency range of 3.10–3.86 GHz (21.71%), with a peak gain of 9.60 dBi. The simulated and measured results of the antenna are found to be in good agreement.

This paper presents a method for measuring whole-body specific absorption rate (WBSAR) of millimeter-wave base stations (BSs) in a reverberation chamber (RC). The absorbed power in the phantom from the equipment under test (EUT) and hence WBSAR is determined as the difference between the total radiated power with and without the phantom. A chamber transfer function is determined and used to include only the absorption in the phantom due to direct illumination from the EUT, i.e., excluding absorption due to the RC multipath reflections. The measurement method was evaluated at 28 GHz using a horn antenna and a commercial massive multi-input–multi-output BS. The experimental results are in good agreement with simulations. The proposed method allows for measurements of WBSAR within 3 minutes, which is much shorter than traditional approaches. The method is suitable for compliance assessments of BS products with the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection 2020 electromagnetic field exposure guidelines, which extend the applicability of WBSAR as basic restrictions up to 300 GHz.

This article presents an innovative design for a low-profile, high-gain circularly polarized (CP) antenna using a single-layer metasurface (MTS). The proposed design incorporates an MTS layer, comprising a 4 × 4 array of hexagonal-shaped patches, printed on the top layer of the substrate. The bottom layer features a coplanar waveguide-fed slotted ground. Circular polarization and broadside radiation are achieved through the application of characteristic mode analysis (CMA). CMA is employed to simultaneously excite desired modes, aiming for wideband circular polarization and gain enhancement. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of the design, with compact dimensions of 0.67λ0 × 0.67λ0 × 0.04λ0. The measurements demonstrate an impressive impedance bandwidth of 84.3% within the 3.7–9.1 GHz. Additionally, a 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth of 18.6% is observed between 4.96 and 5.98 GHz and 3.74% between 8.38 and 8.7 GHz. The antenna exhibits excellent radiation pattern characteristics, featuring a maximum gain of 10.08 dBi at 7.1 GHz. The radiation pattern is symmetrical with broadside directionality, making the antenna well-suited for sensing applications.

This paper proposes a design method for designing a wideband filtering power amplifier (PA) based on terminated coupled line structure (TCLS). This method generates four transmission zeros and three transmission poles by loading stepped impedance resonator and short-circuit stubs on the four ports of TCLS, which greatly optimizes the in-band return loss and stopband suppression of the output matching network. In addition, the effective suppression of the second harmonic also increases the efficiency of the PA. In order to verify the effectiveness and superiority of this design method, a wideband bandpass filtering PA is designed and manufactured in 2.9–3.7 GHz. Measurement results show that the saturated output power is from 40.1 dBm to 41.2 dBm, the drain efficiency is greater than 60.3%, and the gain is 10–11.2 dB.

A novel wideband nonuniform metasurface antenna with stable gain is demonstrated. The nonuniform metasurface is composed of square patches and rings and is excited by a slot antenna. Based on characteristic mode analysis, two characteristic modes with same current direction are selected to achieve stable radiation performance in a wide frequency range. The wideband operation is achieved by assembling the resonant modes of the metasurface and slot antenna. The measured results show that the −10 dB impedance bandwidth of the proposed antenna is from 4.3 to 8.4 GHz (64.57%), and the 2 dB gain bandwidth is from 4.3 to 6.2 GHz (36.2%) with a peak gain value of 9.42 dBi. Moreover, broadside radiation performance is achieved.

In this article, the cylindrical conformation of a linearly polarized cavity-backed magnetoelectric (ME) antenna is studied. Starting from a planar ME antenna presenting a wide bandwidth due to a specific design of its feeding probe, the impact of conformation is shown; the coupling between the ME dipole and the cavity walls is demonstrated to be the key element to keep a wideband behavior. Conformal antennas offering the same impedance bandwidth as the planar antenna are presented operating at Global Navigation Satellite System frequencies (1.164–1.61 GHz). As a result of the conformation, the antenna size has to be reduced to maintain the coupling and a wideband behavior. A prototype conformed to a 44-mm radius cylinder was built using low-cost additive manufacturing. External dimensions of 62 × 62 × 35 mm3 (0.285 × 0.285 × 0.16λ03, where λ0 is the wavelength at 1.38 GHz) were obtained, showing a ground plane area reduction of 46% compared to the planar antenna with the same materials. The conformal antenna also exhibits very steady radiation properties with a gain of around 4.5 dBi and a very similar and stable 3 dB beamwidth around 113° in E- and H-planes. A relatively good agreement is found between measurements and simulation.

A low-profile wideband circularly polarized (CP) metasurface antenna is demonstrated for C-band applications. The metasurface consists of 4 × 4 square patches with Z-shaped slots. Characteristic mode analysis is used to investigate the modal behavior of the metasurface, and a pair of degenerate modes is chosen as the operating modes. The CP radiation is realized by exciting a pair of degenerate modes of the metasurface through a slot antenna, which is used as a feed structure with a 90° phase difference. The CP bandwidth is further widened by combining the resonance modes of the metasurface and slot antenna. The measured results show that the −10 dB impedance bandwidth of the antenna is 3.47–4.76 GHz, and the 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth is 3.5–4.9 GHz with a peak gain of 6.9 dBic. Moreover, the antenna exhibits well left-hand CP radiation performances with a low profile of 0.046λ0.

A distributed basic matching network (MN) designed method that can achieve multioctave bandwidth and highly efficient power amplifier (PA) for multiband applications is presented in this letter. The distributed network unit with a left-rotating T-type structure is employed to construct the wideband MN, whose topology and circuit parameters are acquired through optimization. Finally, the impedance realized by the designed MN falls into the target impedance region obtained by using multi-harmonic bilateral pull technique in the desired frequency band. For the proof of the method, a broadband highly efficient PA has been designed, fabricated, and measured using commercialized GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMT). The measured results show that the implemented PA achieves a bandwidth of 137.8% from 0.7 to 3.8 GHz. The drain efficiency is between 59% and 70% with an output power of greater than 39 dBm and a gain ranging from 9 to 12.1 dB.

A new compact wideband filtering balun based on substrate-integrated suspended line technology is presented in this brief. The proposed device is composed of a λg/4 suspended stripline open-circuited stub, a λg/2 suspended stripline resonator, and a λg/2 suspended slotline resonator. These striplines and slotline are encapsulated in an electromagnetic (EM) shielding box consisting of air cavity, surrounding substrate layers, and metal layers to achieve EM shielding performance. By properly exciting the suspended stripline and slotline resonators, three transmission poles are generated to achieve high frequency selectively. The intrinsic 180∘ phase difference between the two output ports can be obtained by using the electric field distribution caused by the perpendicular coupling between the suspension stripline and the slotline resonator. The wideband passband is achieved with magnitude balance and out-of-phase properties. To validate our proposal, a wideband filtering balun operating at 2.56 GHz with fractional bandwidth of 65.6% is designed and fabricated.

Two wideband bandstop filters (BSFs) for single and dual-band are proposed and then extended to reflectionless BSFs based on the analysis from input impedance/admittance perspective. Also, topologies of higher-number-stopband input-reflectionless BSF are provided to broaden the design scope. Open/shorted coupled lines are adopted to obtain multi transmission zeros and desired stopband bandwidth by adjusting the even-/odd-mode impedance of coupled lines. Resistor-loaded coupled lines are connected with Port 1 to absorb unwanted signals and obtain input-reflectionless behavior. For validation of the proposed theory analysis, BSFs with corresponding absorptive prototypes are constructed and measured.

This work proposes a novel, extremely miniaturized wideband linear–circular and linear–cross metasurface-enabled reflective polarizer. This design comprises a Meander-line structure with horizontal dipoles as the top frequency selective surface, printed on a 1 mm thin-grounded FR-4 substrate. The x/y-polarized incident electromagnetic wave is converted as circularly polarized from 10.60 to 10.92 GHz (LHCP/RHCP), 12.12 to 17.32 GHz (RHCP/LHCP), and 22.72 to 37.76 GHz (LHCP/RHCP) during reflection with 2.97, 35.33, and 49.74% Fractional Bandwidth (FBW). In addition, this design shows linear–cross conversion with a minimum 90% polarization conversion ratio from 11.41 to 12, 19.01 to 22.34, and 40.74 to 46.82 GHz with an FBW of 5.04, 16.11, and 13.89%. The device performance is considerably stable under different oblique incidences, and the polarizer's unitcell is compact with a structural periodicity of 0.089 × 0.064 $\lambda _L^2$, and ultra-thin low-profile substrate thickness of 0.035λL. The proposed prototype is fabricated, and the measured results are in good agreement with the simulated one. This article also mentions how this polarizer could be tuned for dual-band K- and Ka-band satellite applications. The authors believe that the design's novelty lies in the multiband conversion with circular-polarization orthogonality, a highly miniaturized unitcell's volume of 0.199 $\lambda _L^3$/1000, and better angular stability made this design a potential candidate for real-time satellite applications.

Main aim behind this study is to utilize 3D printing technique for designing and fabrication of a flexible wideband Vivaldi antenna for the upcoming 5 G systems. Frequency bands starting from 24 up to 65 GHz are receiving particular attention as they have potential for both high data rate communications and high-resolution radar applications. A Vivaldi antenna is used for its very wideband properties and planar design. The radiating structure covers a bandwidth of 25–65 GHz for a match better than −10 dB and demonstrates reasonably high gain and efficiency performance. The simulated radiation efficiency of the antenna remains above 90% for the entire bandwidth. Hence, the main advantage of this approach is that wideband or switched transceivers for future 5 G communications can be integrated using this concept without the need of complex matching networks.

In this paper, a novel metasurface-based Fabry−Perot cavity antenna loaded with toroidal metal structures is presented. The antenna is compact, wideband, and has high directivity and a high front-to-back ratio. The idea of the antenna is based on loading a microstrip narrow band patch antenna resonating at 4.5 GHz by a single layer metasurface superstrate and with a toroidal metal structure. The metasurface superstrate comprises a periodic array of square patch cells. Compared to conventional microstrip antenna, the front to back lobe ratio is increased from 7 to 20 dB and the directivity is increased by 7 dB. Also, the antenna impedance bandwidth is 34% which is increased four times. This is the first-ever antenna with enhanced bandwidth and directivity using a single layer of metasurface and that too made up of periodic cell array and has application as an energy harvester.

In this paper, a wideband quadrature hybrid coupler is presented. The proposed structure has a multi-layer microstrip topology. In this topology, there are three substrate layers including prepreg material and four conductive layers. In order to achieve equal power division between through and coupled arms of the directional coupler while maintaining a 90° phase shift, aperture coupling between the resonators located at both top and bottom layers is utilized. So as to avoid any unwanted effects of prepreg material in such multilayer topology, via shielding around resonators are inserted. In this study, coupling from input ports to output ports is accomplished by the shielded butterfly shaped slot etched to the ground layer of top and bottom layers. The proposed design operates within 3–12 GHz. The acquired phase imbalance between the coupled ports is <±2.5°. The results of the manufactured quadrature hybrid coupler agree well with the simulated results.
