Detection of the 21 cm signal from the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) ($z \sim 6 - 10$) amidst the dominant foregrounds, which are 3–4 orders of magnitude greater than the weak cosmological signal, is a challenging task for the existing 21 cm experiments. The detection is further challenged by the large Field of View (FoV) of the instrument used for observation, as it becomes necessary to excise foregrounds present within the FoV to make a successful detection. In response to the challenges faced, in our previous work, we developed and installed a new instrument – the Central Redundant Array Mega-tile (CRAM) – and integrated it within the MWA Phase II configuration. It is a larger antenna tile configuration ($8\times 8$ dipoles) with a smaller FoV at every frequency under consideration and has multiple sidelobes of reduced response when compared with the existing Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) tiles. In this paper, we aim to demonstrate through power spectrum simulations that using the larger tile, such as the CRAM, can reduce the impact of bright radio foregrounds near the field edge. For the pedagogical approach aimed with this work, we developed a power spectrum pipeline to estimate the cylindrically averaged power spectrum. The power spectrum is estimated for MWA-MWA baselines and CRAM-MWA baselines using analytical beams, simulated diffuse sky maps and a semi-numerical 21 cm signal. Employing a drift scanning strategy, we estimate 1D and 2D power spectra for a series of two-minute observations spanning 24 hrs using the diffuse sky maps. Our simulations predict a power reduction at the edge of the EoR wedge. The reduction in foreground power is confirmed with the Fisher analysis of the expected signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) improvement, which reports a higher SNR with the power estimations from CRAM baselines when compared with the regular MWA baselines. The reduced power obtained with the CRAM baselines is consistent with the fact that the larger tile configuration has reduced the impact of foregrounds from near the horizon.

NASA’s all-sky survey mission, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), is specifically engineered to detect exoplanets that transit bright stars. Thus far, TESS has successfully identified approximately 400 transiting exoplanets, in addition to roughly 6 000 candidate exoplanets pending confirmation. In this study, we present the results of our ongoing project, the Validation of Transiting Exoplanets using Statistical Tools (VaTEST). Our dedicated effort is focused on the confirmation and characterisation of new exoplanets through the application of statistical validation tools. Through a combination of ground-based telescope data, high-resolution imaging, and the utilisation of the statistical validation tool known as TRICERATOPS, we have successfully discovered eight potential super-Earths. These planets bear the designations: TOI-238b (1.61$^{+0.09} _{-0.10}$ R$_\oplus$), TOI-771b (1.42$^{+0.11} _{-0.09}$ R$_\oplus$), TOI-871b (1.66$^{+0.11} _{-0.11}$ R$_\oplus$), TOI-1467b (1.83$^{+0.16} _{-0.15}$ R$_\oplus$), TOI-1739b (1.69$^{+0.10} _{-0.08}$ R$_\oplus$), TOI-2068b (1.82$^{+0.16} _{-0.15}$ R$_\oplus$), TOI-4559b (1.42$^{+0.13} _{-0.11}$ R$_\oplus$), and TOI-5799b (1.62$^{+0.19} _{-0.13}$ R$_\oplus$). Among all these planets, six of them fall within the region known as ‘keystone planets’, which makes them particularly interesting for study. Based on the location of TOI-771b and TOI-4559b below the radius valley we characterised them as likely super-Earths, though radial velocity mass measurements for these planets will provide more details about their characterisation. It is noteworthy that planets within the size range investigated herein are absent from our own solar system, making their study crucial for gaining insights into the evolutionary stages between Earth and Neptune.

This work presents the study of multiphase relations of classical Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds for short periods (log P < 1) and long periods (log P > 1). From the analysis, it has been found that the multiphase relations obtained using the models as well as observations are highly dynamic with pulsational phase. The multiphase relations for short and long periods are found to display contrasting behaviour for both LMC and SMC. It has been observed that the multiphase relations obtained using the models agree better with the observations in the PC plane in most phases in comparison to the PL plane. Multiphase relations obtained using the models display a clear distinction among different convection sets in most phases. Comparison of models and observations in the multiphase plane is one way to test the models with the observations and to constrain the theory of stellar pulsation.

Prediction of solar activity cycles is challenging because physical processes inside the Sun involve a broad range of multiscale dynamics that no model can reproduce and because the available observations are highly limited and cover mostly surface layers. Helioseismology makes it possible to probe solar dynamics in the convective zone, but variations in differential rotation and meridional circulation are currently available for only two solar activity cycles. It has been demonstrated that sunspot observations, which cover over 400 years, can be used to calibrate the Parker-Kleeorin-Ruzmaikin dynamo model, and that the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) method can be used to link the modeled magnetic fields to sunspot observations and make reliable predictions of a following activity cycle. However, for more accurate predictions, it is necessary to use actual observations of the solar magnetic fields, which are available only for the last four solar cycles. In this paper I briefly discuss the influence of the limited number of available observations on the accuracy of EnKF estimates of solar cycle parameters, the criteria to evaluate the predictions, and application of synoptic magnetograms to the prediction of solar activity.

There is a strong correlation between coronal mass ejection transients and chromospheric H-α activity. Solar physicists hope to ascertain what causes coronal disturbances, and in our current investigation we are trying to address that problem by assessing the likelihood that a coronal disturbance is associated with other manifestations of the same abrupt, perturbing event such as a flare. The correlation, if any, between filament and flare can be derived by a method of image processing. Our next approach is to give the results of statistical research by studying a century of chromospheric Hα observations. This poster describes the concept and preliminary experiences of deriving the characteristics of a filament and a flare.

High-precision pulsar timing is central to a wide range of astrophysics and fundamental physics applications. When timing an ensemble of millisecond pulsars in different sky positions, known as a pulsar timing array (PTA), one can search for ultra-low-frequency gravitational waves (GWs) through the spatial correlations that spacetime deformations by passing GWs are predicted to induce on the pulses’ times-of-arrival (TOAs). A pulsar-timing model, requires the use of a solar-system ephemeris (SSE) to properly predict the position of the solar-system barycentre, the (quasi-)inertial frame where all TOAs are referred. Here, I discuss how while errors in SSEs can introduce correlations in the TOAs that may interfere with GW searches, one can make use of PTAs to study the solar system. I discuss work done within the context of the European Pulsar Timing Array and the International Pulsar Timing Array collaborations. These include new updates on the masses of planets from PTA data, first limits on masses of the most massive asteroids, and comparisons between SSEs from independent groups. Finally, I discuss a new approach in setting limits on the masses of unknown bodies in the solar system and calculate mass sensitivity curves for PTA data.

In this article we described CoLiTec software for full automated frames processing. CoLiTec software allows processing the Big Data of observation results as well as processing of data that is continuously formed during observation. The scope of solving tasks includes frames brightness equalization, moving objects detection, astrometry, photometry, etc. Along with the high efficiency of Big Data processing CoLiTec software also ensures high accuracy of data measurements. A comparative analysis of the functional characteristics and positional accuracy was performed between CoLiTec and Astrometrica software. The benefits of CoLiTec used with wide field and low quality frames were observed. The efficiency of the CoLiTec software was proved by about 700.000 observations and over 1.500 preliminary discoveries.

The existence of multiple subclasses of type Ia supernovae (SNeIa) has been the subject of great debate in the last decade. In this work, we show how machine learning tools facilitate identification of subtypes of SNe Ia. Using Deep Learning for dimensionality reduction, we were capable of performing such identification in a parameter space of significantly lower dimension than its principal component analysis counterpart. This is evidence that the progenitor system and the explosion mechanism can be described with a small number of initial physical parameters. All tools used here are publicly available in the Python package DRACULA (Dimensionality Reduction And Clustering for Unsupervised Learning in Astronomy) and can be found within COINtoolbox (https://github.com/COINtoolbox/DRACULA).

Using data from the WISE All-Sky Survey, we have found >100 new infrared excess sources around main-sequence Hipparcos stars within 75 pc. Our empirical calibration of WISE photospheric colors and removal of non-trivial false-positive sources are responsible for the high confidence (>99.5%) of detections, while our corrections to saturated W1 and W2 photometry have for the first time allowed us to search for new infrared excess sources around bright field stars in WISE. The careful calibration and filtering of the WISE data have allowed us to probe excess fluxes down to roughly 8% of the photospheric emission at 22μm around saturated stars in WISE. We expect that the increased sensitivity of our survey will not only aid in understanding the evolution of debris disks, but will also benefit future studies using WISE.

We present here evidence for the existence of a citation advantage within astrophysics for papers that link to data. Using simple measures based on publication data from NASA Astrophysics Data System we find a citation advantage for papers with links to data receiving on the average significantly more citations per paper than papers without links to data. Furthermore, using INSPEC and Web of Science databases we investigate whether either papers of an experimental or theoretical nature display different citation behavior.

Longitudinal administration of neuropsychological instruments are often used to assess age-related changes in cognition. Informative loss to follow-up may bias the results of these studies. Herein, we use auxiliary data to adjust for informative loss to follow-up. In the Einstein Aging Study, memory was assessed annually in a community sample of adults age 70+, free of dementia at baseline, using the free recall from the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test, and via telephone using the Memory Impairment Screen for Telephone (the auxiliary data). Joint linear mixed models were used to assess how the effect of the APOE ε4 genotype may be affected by informative missingness in the in-person data. A total of 620 EAS participants contributed 2085 person years of follow-up to the analyses. Memory decline rates estimated in joint models were 19% greater in ε4 negative participants and 27% greater in ε4 positive participants compared to traditional approaches; the effect of APOE ε4 on memory decline was 37% greater. Joint modeling methods can help address bias caused by informative missing data in the estimation of the effect of risk factors on cognitive change, and may be applicable to a broader range of outcomes in longitudinal aging studies. The initial shear field plays a central role in the formation of large-scale structures, and in shaping the geometry, morphology, and topology of the cosmic web. We discuss a recent theoretical framework for the shear tensor, termed the ‘peak/dip picture’, which accounts for the fact that halos/voids may form from local extrema of the density field – rather than from random spatial positions; the standard Doroshkevich's formalism is generalized, to include correlations between the density Hessian and shear field at special points in space around which halos/voids may form. We then present the ‘peak/dip excursion-set-based’ algorithm, along with its most recent applications – merging peaks theory with the standard excursion set approach.

We describe the Bayesian \barcode\ formalism that has been designed towards the reconstruction of the Cosmic Web in a given volume on the basis of the sampled galaxy cluster distribution. Based on the realization that the massive compact clusters are responsible for the major share of the large scale tidal force field shaping the anisotropic and in particular filamentary features in the Cosmic Web. Given the nonlinearity of the constraints imposed by the cluster configurations, we resort to a state-of-the-art constrained reconstruction technique to find a proper statistically sampled realization of the original initial density and velocity field in the same cosmic region. Ultimately, the subsequent gravitational evolution of these initial conditions towards the implied Cosmic Web configuration can be followed on the basis of a proper analytical model or an N-body computer simulation. The BARCODE formalism includes an implicit treatment for redshift space distortions. This enables a direct reconstruction on the basis of observational data, without the need for a correction of redshift space artifacts. In this contribution we provide a general overview of the the Cosmic Web connection with clusters and a description of the Bayesian BARCODE formalism. We conclude with a presentation of its successful workings with respect to test runs based on a simulated large scale matter distribution, in physical space as well as in redshift space.

Mock galaxy catalogues are essential to the error analysis of cosmological measurements from big galaxy surveys covering thousands of square degrees in the sky, like BOSS, WiggleZ, DES, or Euclid. The PTHalos mock galaxy catalogues were used in the BOSS survey to analyse the BAO measurement from the CMASS (z∼ 0.57) and LOWZ (z∼ 0.32) galaxy samples, which provided the best estimate to date of the cosmic distance scale from galaxy surveys at these redshifts. We review the PTHalos mocks galaxy catalogues and their key contributions to these analyses.

The primordial power spectrum is an indirect probe of inflation or other structure-formation mechanisms. We introduce a new method, named PRISM, to estimate this spectrum from the empirical cosmic microwave background (CMB) power spectrum. This is a sparsity-based inversion method, which leverages a sparsity prior on features in the primordial spectrum in a wavelet dictionary to regularise the inverse problem. This non-parametric approach is able to reconstruct the global shape as well as localised features of the primordial spectrum accurately and proves to be robust for detecting deviations from the currently favoured scale-invariant spectrum. We investigate the strength of this method on a set of WMAP nine-year simulated data for three types of primordial spectra and then process the WMAP nine-year data as well as the Planck PR1 data. We find no significant departures from a near scale-invariant spectrum.
