Platelet-rich plasma has gained interest over the two last decades, mainly because of its role in regenerative medicine. This work aimed to assess the role of intra-operative local application of platelet-rich plasma gel in the improvement of quality of voice after microlaryngeal surgery.

This was a prospective comparative study that included 40 patients undergoing microlaryngeal surgery for benign vocal fold lesions. There were two groups divided equally into study group A and control group B. The assessment of voice was performed by videostroboscopy and acoustic analysis pre-operatively and at two weeks and one and three months post-operatively.

The data demonstrated that all the stroboscopic and acoustic parameters showed significant improvement in both groups. Group A showed significant improvement regarding acoustic parameters at the third post-operative follow up when compared with group B.

Platelet-rich plasma has a beneficial effect on voice quality following microlaryngeal surgery based in particular on acoustic parameters.

Tonsillectomy is a painful surgery performed in cases of recurrent tonsillitis. Application of platelet-rich plasma to diminish the pain and morbidity post-tonsillectomy is gaining importance. This study evaluated post-operative pain and morbidity after autologous platelet-rich plasma application on the tonsil beds during tonsillectomy.

Participants were randomised into group 1 (n = 28, peri-operative platelet-rich plasma intervention) and group 2 (n = 28, control). Post-tonsillectomy, patients were assessed (day 0, 1, 2, 3, 7 and 14) for pain, healing and time taken to return to normal activity. Data were analysed by independent t-test and chi-square test with p ≤ 0.05 as the significance level.

A significant decrease in the mean pain score up to day 7 (p < 0.05) and tonsillar fossae healing on days 2 and 3 (p < 0.05) post-tonsillectomy was noted. The majority of the patients returned to their routine activities after a week post-tonsillectomy.

Platelet-rich plasma application was effective in accentuating healing and reducing post-tonsillectomy pain and morbidity.

A single-centre, single-blinded prospective experimental study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of autologous platelet-rich plasma applied to the tonsillar bed post-operatively in reducing post-operative pain and haemorrhage.

Platelet-rich plasma, prepared prior to surgery, was applied with calcium gluconate to one randomly chosen tonsillar fossa. Pain and haemorrhage were analysed, using a visual analogue scale and a pre-defined grading scale respectively, four times on the day of surgery at 2-hourly intervals, and thrice on the following day.

The pain score and haemorrhage grade on the test side were lower than on the control side. These findings were statistically significant.

This pilot study, conducted in India, revealed valid positive results for a promising new technology. The manual preparation of platelet-rich plasma could be automated in the future to allow a larger sample size.

Perforations of the tympanic membrane are treated with various surgical techniques and materials. This study aimed to determine the efficacy of platelet-rich plasma during underlay myringoplasty.

The study included 40 patients. Autologous platelet-rich plasma was applied in-between temporalis fascia graft and tympanic membrane remnant during underlay myringoplasty in group 1 (n = 20). The outcome was evaluated after three months and compared with group 2 (n = 20), a control group that underwent routine underlay tympanoplasty.

After three months’ follow up, graft uptake was 95 per cent in group 1 and 85 per cent in group 2 (p < 0.03). Mean hearing threshold gain was 18.62 dB in group 1 and 13.15 dB in group 2. This difference was statistically significant (p < 0.01).

Platelet-rich plasma, with its ease of preparation technique, availability, low cost, autologous nature and good graft uptake rate, justifies its use in tympanoplasty type I procedures.

Platelet-rich plasma is a novel material that is being used more frequently in many surgical specialties.

A literature review on the current and potential uses of platelet-rich plasma in otolaryngology was performed.

There is limited evidence on the use of platelet-rich plasma in otolaryngology compared with other specialties: only 11 studies on various subspecialties (otology, rhinology and laryngology) were included in the final review.

Based on the limited number of studies, we cannot draw safe conclusions about the value of platelet-rich plasma in otolaryngology. Nevertheless, the available literature suggests that platelet-rich plasma holds promise for future research and may have a number of clinical applications.
