House flies (Musca domestica L.) are key pests of poultry and are managed worldwide with a variety of insecticides. However, extensive and injudicious use of insecticides has led to the development of resistance in many insect pests. Insecticide mixtures can increase the efficacy of the product and/or delay the development of resistance, thus making them a useful tool for pest control. In addition to their efficacy when used alone, mixtures of emamectin benzoate, spinosad or nitenpyram with either lambda-cyhalothrin or profenofos were assessed against a susceptible strain of house flies collected from poultry farms. The analysis revealed that combination indices for lambda-cyhalothrin/emamectin benzoate and lambda-cyhalothrin/spinosad mixtures were significantly >1, indicating an antagonistic effect. In contrast, the indices for all the tested ratios of lambda-cyhalothrin/nitenpyram were significantly < 1, suggesting a synergistic effect. For mixtures containing profenofos, combination indices varied significantly. For example, synergism was observed in a 1:1 mixture containing lambda-cyhalothrin and emamectin benzoate, but antagonism occurred when a higher proportion of the latter insecticide was used. Conversely, synergism in a mixture containing profenofos and nitenpyram was observed only when a lower proportion of the second insecticide was used. The present results suggest that ideal insecticide mixtures must be empirically determined and alternative strategies such as mosaics, rotations and cultural control should be considered for the management of the house fly.

The larval haemolymph of three cyclorrhaphous dipteran flies, Sarcophaga ruficornis Fab., Musca domestica L. and Chrysomya megacephala Fab., possesses five different types of haemocytes: prohaemocytes; plasmatocytes; granulocytes; spherulocytes; oenocytoids. In addition, vermicytes are found in the haemolymph of S.ruficornis and adipohaemocytes in the haemolymph of M. domestica. The total haemocyte counts in the three dipteran flies show an increasing trend throughout the larval stage, attaining a peak value in the freshly formed white puparium stage and declining thereafter. The differential haemocyte count shows a decline in the number of prohaemocytes with an increase in the number of plasmatocytes, granulocytes and spherulocytes.

Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae) is a vector of a range variety of pathogens infecting humans and animals. During a year, housefly experiences serial population bottlenecks resulted in reduction of genetic diversity. Population structure has also been subjected to different selection regimes created by insect control programs and pest management. Both environmental and genetic disturbances can affect developmental stability, which is often reflected in morphological traits as asymmetry. Since developmental stability is of great adaptive importance, the aim of this study was to examine fluctuating asymmetry (FA), as a measure of developmental instability, in both wild populations and laboratory colonies of M. domestica. The amount and pattern of wing shape FA was compared among samples within each of two groups (laboratory and wild) and between groups. Firstly, the amount of FA does not differ significantly among samples within the group and neither does it differ between groups. Regarding the mean shape of FA, contrary to non-significant difference within the wild population group and among some colonies, the significant difference between groups was found. These results suggest that the laboratory colonies and wild samples differ in buffering mechanisms to perturbations during development. Hence, inbreeding and stochastic processes, mechanisms dominating in the laboratory-bred samples contributed to significant changes in FA of wing shape. Secondly, general patterns of left–right displacements of landmarks across both studied sample groups are consistent. Observed consistent direction of FA implies high degrees of wing integration. Thus, our findings shed light on developmental buffering processes important for population persistence in the environmental change and genetic stress influence on M. domestica.

A housefly elicits an escape in response to an approaching target (Holmqvist & Srinivasan, 1991). This study tests if the giant fiber pathway, which mediates a light-off escape response in a fruitfly (Wyman et al., 1985), also mediates escape to an approaching target in a housefly. Visual stimuli simulating an approaching or receding dark disk were presented to houseflies, Musca domestica, in both behavioral and physiological experiments. Freely behaving flies escaped in response to an expanding dark disk but not to a contracting dark disk. In restrained flies, the giant fiber, here called the giant descending neuron (GDN), was recorded from intracellularly and the tergotrochanteral muscle (TTM), which provides the main thrust in an escape jump, was recorded from extracellularly. During electrical stimulation of the brain, by means of stimulating electrodes inserted into the ventral part of each compound eye, a single spike in the GDN drives the TTM. However, when the TTM responds to visual stimulation that elicits an escape response in a behaving fly, the GDN shows no activity. Similarly to the behavioral results, the TTM of restrained flies showed muscle potentials in response to an expanding dark disk, but not to a contracting disk. However, freely moving flies elicit escapes more than 100 ms on average before the first TTM spike, suggesting that this type of escape does not start with a jump powered by the TTM. In conclusion, this visually evoked escape response in the housefly is not likely to be mediated by the giant fiber pathway. The findings suggest that there exist at least two pathways mediating visually evoked escape responses in flies.

Soil samples collected from six localities in Pakistan—Peshawar, Quetta, Loralai, Sibi, Lahore and Sheikhupura—were screened for insecticidal Bacillus spp. Bacillus coagulane, B. megaterium and B. alvei, which constituted 50%, 33% and 17% of the Bacillus isolates respectively, were isolated and their toxicity was evaluated against larvae of the house fly, Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae). The most toxic bacterial isolate of the three was B. alvei (98.7% mortality) and the least toxic was B. megaterium (89.3% mortality). Extracts of experimental larvae showed the presence of strains of the respective species of Bacillus in all cases, indicating that the observed mortality in the house flies was caused by the Bacillus species.

Plant essential oils possess diversified insecticidal properties. Under screening programme of survey of bioactive agents for insect control 31 essential oils from different botanicals (2% in acetone), were studied for repellency and direct toxicity (insecticidal) against laboratory bred houseflies, Musca domestica L. The essential oils obtained from Ocimum gratissimum L., Thymus serpyllum L., Illicium verum Hooks, f., Myristica fragrans Houtt., Curcuma amada Roxb. showed 100% repellent activity, and Acorus calamus L. and Thymus serpyllum L. showed about 40% insecticidal activity. Results were compared with N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide, dimethyl phthalate, malathion, pyrethrum extract, thymol, mineral oil and piperonylbutoxide. Biochemical studies of these promising oils may emerge new leads in developing future pesticides.

Coprophagous beetles belonging to two genera, Onitis and Heliocopris, were collected and fed on proglotids and eggs of Taenia saginata. The beetles' faeces was collected after 24 hr onwards and examined for Taenia eggs. The flight range and behaviour of the beetles was investigated using cow rumen contents as bait for starved marked beetles. Results indicate that coprophagous beetles could play a role in dissemination of taeniasis.
