Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. ‘Vernal′) was seeded broadcast or in drill rows spaced 18 cm apart in the same operation that EPTC (S-ethyl dipropylcarbamothioate) was applied. For broadcast seeding, EPTC was applied as herbicide-treated crop seed, as granules mixed with crop seed, or as granules applied with the crop seed, but with the seed and granules carried in separate boxes on the seeder. For drill-row seeding, EPTC was applied between the rows in subsurface lines as a liquid or granular formulation; and within the rows as herbicide-treated seed, as granules mixed with the seed, or as granules carried in a box separate from the seed. Weed control and crop tolerance with the more effective simultaneous applications of EPTC were similar to those with conventional preplant-incorporated applications. To seed alfalfa (either broadcast or in drill rows) and apply EPTC in one operation, the methods wherein untreated seed and a granular formulation of EPTC were applied together but from separate boxes on the seeder were the most practical, because the mechanical components, the seed, and the formulated herbicide are all commercially available.

The objective of this paper was to evaluate the effect of preplant applications of trifluralin on barley stand and yield, and control of grass weeds in field experiments during 1992 and 1993. Factors examined were: (1) crop planting patterns (conventional drill with rows 15 cm apart and deep-seeder drill with rows 25 cm apart), (2) herbicide application times (22 d before sowing and immediately before sowing), and (3) herbicide application. During 1993, hand-weeded plots also were established. Trifluralin applied preplant at 528 g ai/ha reduced weed density and biomass. Weed control was higher under conventional planting than under the deep planting pattern, and there was no effect of the time of application on herbicide efficacy. There was no herbicide injury to the crop, and grain yield was higher in treated than in untreated plots due to successful weed control.

Three approaches to data analysis were compared to describe competitive interactions between wheat and Italian ryegrass. Replacement series were performed using the two species at total densities of 100, 200, and 400 plants/ m2, and separate monoculture experiments for each species at densities from 33 to 800 plants/m2. Approaches to data analysis included: 1) conventional analysis of replacement series experiments, 2) development of synthetic no-interaction responses from monoculture experiments for comparison with results from mixtures, and 3) responses of the reciprocal yield of individual plants to variation in densities of the two species. Wheat was the superior competitor to ryegrass; however, the three approaches varied in ability to quantify this competitive relationship. The conventional replacement series analysis was least sensitive in describing the influences of either density or proportion on the plant association. The synthetic no-interaction approach provided the most detailed analysis of the influence of proportion on the species interaction. The reciprocal yield approach provided the simplest and most sensitive analysis of the joint influences of density and proportion. The latter approach also provided the most quantitative analysis of the influence of density on the species interaction. Plant density and species proportion are important variables for interpreting the process of plant competition.

In field experiments, chlorsulfuron and CGA 131036 did not injure winter wheat. Both herbicides applied postemergence at 9 and 10 g ai/ha completely controlled flixweed. CGA 131036 controlled cutleaf eveningprimrose 81%, and chlorsulfuron controlled 91%. At similar rates, CGA 131036 was also less effective than chlorsulfuron on henbit and Italian ryegrass. Both controlled wild buckwheat 77% when applied postemergence at 18 g/ha. Neither of the sulfonylurea herbicides controlled prostrate spurge or woolly croton as effectively as 2,4-D. In a bean root bioassay, root growth inhibition by both herbicides was partially alleviated by adding isoleucine and valine.

Studies were conducted at the Vegetable Substation in Kibler, AR, in 1992 and 1993, in the same plots, to evaluate weed suppression by spring-seeded cover crops and to determine the effects of cover crop and imazethapyr on no-till southern pea. A plot without cover, conventionally tilled before planting southern pea, served as control. Weed control treatments, applied as subplots in each cover crop, included a weedy check, handweeded check, and half and full rates of imazethapyr (0.035 and 0.07 kg/ha) followed by sethoxydim (0.22 kg/ha). Biomass of Palmer amaranth 6 WAR without herbicides, was less in Italian ryegrass and sorghum-sudangrass residues than in oat residue and no cover crop. Over the years, Palmer amaranth density increased 333% without cover crops and 28% with cover crops. Rice flatsedge density increased four to five times in oat and sorghum-sudangrass residues but remained the same in Italian ryegrass residue. In general, Italian ryegrass residue suppressed the most weeds. Oat residue was least suppressive. Italian ryegrass and sorghum-sudangrass also reduced southern pea stand. Regardless of cover crop and year, half and full rates of imazethapyr followed by sethoxydim equally reduced density of Palmer amaranth, goosegrass, large crabgrass, southwestern cupgrass, and rice flatsedge compared with the untreated check. Residual control of Palmer amaranth by imazethapyr was higher at the full rate than the reduced rate, regardless of cover crop. Half rate of imazethapyr followed by sethoxydim controlled 94 to 100% of Palmer amaranth, rice flatsedge, large crabgrass, and southwestern cupgrass late in the season, regardless of cover crop in 1992 and 1993. Southern pea yield in untilled plots with cover crops was two to three times lower than yield in plots with preplant tillage and no cover crops mostly because of reduction in crop stand in the presence of cover crops.

The effects of the imidazolinone herbicide AC 263,222 on crops that may be rotated with soybean were studied in the greenhouse and field. Corn, grain sorghum, cotton, rice, wheat, soybean, and Italian ryegrass were planted directly into treated soil after AC 263,222 was incorporated. In the field, AC 263,222 at rates as high as 35 g ai ha–1 did not reduce shoot weight or emergence of these species. Some visual injury occurred, but was 20% or less 28 d after planting for all crops. Crops were more sensitive in the greenhouse, where reductions in both shoot and root dry weight were observed. AC 263,222 at 13, 13, and 7 g ha–1 reduced corn, grain sorghum, and Italian ryegrass shoot weights, respectively. Cotton, rice, and wheat tolerated rates from 27 to 55 g ha–1. Biomass reduction occurred with all crops at 55 g ha–1 and above. Because AC 263,222 will be registered for use in soybean at 9 to 18 g ha–1, and potential rotational crops were planted immediately after soil treatment, problems with injury to these crops are not expected.

Metolachlor, applied to the surface of leaching columns as dicalcium phosphate tablets, was recovered over a period of 25 d compared with 2 and 3 d for emulsifiable concentrate and granular formulations, respectively. In similar studies, approximately 27% of napropamide was recovered from tablets during the same period. Adding an adjuvant to the napropamide tablet mixture increased the recovery rate to 55%. Tablet hardness and size had little effect on the release rate of napropamide. Tablets containing 4% ai napropamide released greater amounts of herbicide at a single collection period than did tablets containing 1% ai. Adding an adjuvant to the napropamide tablet mixture significantly improved Italian ryegrass control in the area adjacent to herbicide placement.

Sethoxydim {2-[1-(ethoxyimino)butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one} is used to control weedy grasses in red fescue (Festuca rubra L. # FESRU and F. rubra ssp. commutata), an important seed crop in Oregon. The sethoxydim rate required to reduce growth rate of 11 cultivars of red fescue and four cultivars of bentgrass (Agrostis tenuis Sibth. # AGSTE and A. stolonifera L. var. palustris # AGSST), a common contaminant in red fescue fields, by 50% (GR50) was determined in greenhouse and laboratory experiments. Field experiments compared only red fescue cv. ‘Pennlawn’ and bentgrass cv. ‘Penncross'. The GR50 values for Pennlawn red fescue in the field, the greenhouse, and the laboratory were 30 kg ai/ha, 15 kg/ha, and 5300 μM, respectively. Penncross bentgrass was approximately 400, 1400, and 12 900 times more susceptible than Pennlawn red fescue in the field, in the greenhouse, and in laboratory experiments, respectively. Plants were at different growth stages in the different experiments. The xylene and surfactant used as a solvent for the technical grade sethoxydim was as toxic to red fescue without sethoxydim as when sethoxydim was included. Cultivars of red fescue differed in their response to sethoxydim, but cultivars of bentgrass did not. The GR50's of other species tested in the greenhouse were >4 kg/ha for annual bluegrass (Poa annua L. # POAAN), 0.22 kg/ha for tall fescue (F. arundinacea Schreb. # FESAR), 0.37 kg/ha for downy brome (Bromus tectorum L. # BROTE), and 0.017 kg/ha for Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam. # LOLMU).

Nonfungicidal effects of agricultural fungicides on crop plants have been reported previously; however, there are few reports of nontarget effects of fungicides on weedy species. Field research trials in Oregon demonstrated that the growth of several broadleaf weeds was reduced after multiple applications of the fungicide propiconazole. Greenhouse experiments confirmed that preemergence applications of propiconazole reduced the biomass accumulation of several common broadleaf and grass weeds 15 to 63%. Laboratory experiments were performed on redroot pigweed, the most sensitive species, to examine the effects of propiconazole on germination and early seedling growth. Redroot pigweed germination and total seedling length (root plus shoot) were reduced at propiconazole concentrations above 37 and 0.36 mg/L, respectively. Growth-regulating effects of fungicides such as propiconazole on the germination and early growth of weeds may contribute to integrated weed management, especially when adequate moisture ensures the presence of germinating seeds and small seedlings throughout the growing season.

We have assessed the utility of morphological and microsatellite markers for tracing field hybridization between Lolium multiflorum and Lolium perenne in cereal-enclosed gene flow plots. The presence of awns on the inflorescence of F1 hybrids was found to be a reliable, but underscoring, indicator of L. multiflorum paternity in L. perenne derived seed as determined by inheritance of species-specific alleles at the microsatellite locus ‘H01 H06’ in these progeny. A positive correlation was evident in the experimental treatment between the number of pollen donor plants in a given plot and the frequency of hybrid F1 seed harvested from pollen receptor plants in that plot. These experiments have established the utility of naturally occurring heritable markers for the measurement of gene flow rates in field Ryegrass populations, with particular significance for risk assessment modeling of potential gene flow from transgenic grass cultivars.

Recent advances in the cytogenetics of the Lolium–Festuca complex provide new opportunities for understanding and manipulating complex physiological mechanisms such as drought and cold resistance. This paper describes breeding programmes involving hybrids between two species: L. multiflorum, which offers good early growth and high nutritive value, and F. arundinacea, which is more stress tolerant. The programmes are designed to allow a rapid recovery of the Lolium genome and to restrict numbers of recombinants derived from Festuca. Use of genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) and an isozyme marker demonstrates how gene complexes from any part of the Festuca genome can be introgressed into Lolium. This enables us to construct genotypes combining desirable traits of both Lolium and Festuca species. By introgressing different Festuca genes into Lolium, quantitative traits such as tolerance to drought and cold can be ‘dissected’ into their different components, to clarify their function. Festuca genes for stress tolerance can be located by genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) and assigned to regions of chromosome arms in Lolium. Two Lolium genotypes are described, in which genes for drought resistance transferred from the F. pratensis sub-genome of F. arundinacea onto chromosome 2 of Lolium. The two drought-resistant lines have the high water conductance of Festuca on their adaxial leaf surface and the low abaxial conductance of Lolium. The paper also describes how androgenesis of L. multiflorum × F. arundinacea hybrids has led to the selection and characterization of genotypes with coacclimation to drought and freezing stress, in some cases exceeding that in the Festuca parent.

A mutation of a gene (discovered in Festuca pratensis Huds. and designated sid ) confers indefinite greenness on senescing leaves. Via intergeneric hybrids with Lolium multiflorum L. and Lolium perenne L., the mutant gene (sidy) has been introgressed into a range of Lolium backgrounds. Using genomic in situ hybridization we have identified segments carrying sidy in recombinant chromosomes of Lolium–Festuca introgression lines. We also used L. perenne lines segregating 1[ratio ]1 for the staygreen character to tag the gene with molecular markers. In two mapping populations a total of 84 genotypes were screened with isoenzymes, RAPD primers, RFLP probes and AFLP primer pairs. Over 180 polymorphic loci were identified, representing 10 linkage groups spanning 600 cM. Two AFLP markers are linked to sid at 4·6 and 14·9 cM, close enough to be usable for marker-assisted selection. Introgression of sidy into Lolium temulentum L. resulted in the production of near-isogenic inbreeding lines suitable for comparative studies of gene expression. Using a variation of the method of representational difference analysis a very small number of cDNAs have been identified as promising candidates for sid, or genes directly regulated by sid.
