Herbicide-resistant weeds threaten modern agriculture production. In Michigan, horseweed (Erigeron canadensis L.; syn. Conyza canadensis (L.) Cronq.) is among the most troublesome weeds, and glyphosate was widely used to control E. canadensis. Due to extreme selection pressure imposed by heavy glyphosate usage, glyphosate-resistant E. canadensis is widespread. New technologies to control resistant E. canadensis are being introduced in the form of multiple herbicide-resistance traits into glyphosate-resistant soybean (e.g. dicamba or 2,4-D choline). These new soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] varieties will likely increase the use of 2,4-D and dicamba thus increasing the resistance selection pressure in E. canadensis. Predicting agronomic factors that drive herbicide-resistance evolution can serve as an effective proactive tool to advise practitioners to modify management strategies. Therefore, the objectives of this study are: 1) conduct dose-response assays to assess current resistance spectrum of E. canadensis collected in Michigan and 2) predict and determine the main factors in row crop production that contribute to resistance evolution in these accessions. Dose-response assays were conducted to evaluate the herbicide sensitivity spectrum to glyphosate, dicamba, and 2,4-D in 20 E. canadensis accessions collected from eight Michigan counties. Out of the 20 accessions, 60% were resistant to glyphosate, 35% to 2,4-D, and 20% to dicamba. Pearson’s correlation coefficient of dose-response values were positive in all comparisons (2,4-D-dicamba, r = 0.35; dicamba-glyphosate, r = 0.15; 2,4-D-glyphosate, r = 0.21). Dose-response data were integrated in odds ratio analyses to access the influence that previous management history had on the occurrence of resistance. Out of the significant pairwise comparisons, 44% were related to crop rotation frequency, 33% to previous herbicide-resistance status, and 22% to location collected. Results highlight that growers have the ability to proactively manage herbicide-resistance evolution progression of E. canadensis in Michigan by adopting integrated weed management techniques to slow successive selection events that occur in low diversity management systems.

Waterhemp has become a serious management challenge for New York (NY) field crop growers. Two putative glyphosate-resistant (GR) waterhemp populations (NY1 and NY2) were collected in 2023 from two soybean fields in Seneca County, NY. The objectives of this research were to (1) confirm and characterize the level of glyphosate resistance in waterhemp populations from NY relative to a known glyphosate-susceptible Nebraska (NE_SUS) population and (2) evaluate the efficacy of various postemergence (POST) herbicides for GR waterhemp control. Based on the shoot dry weight reductions (GR50 values) in a dose-response study, the NY1 and NY2 populations exhibited 5.6- to 8.3-fold resistance to glyphosate compared with the NE_SUS population. In a separate study, POST herbicides such as dicamba, glufosinate, lactofen, and 2,4-D applied alone or in a mixture with glyphosate or glufosinate had provided 89% to 99% control and ≥ 97% shoot dry weight reduction of NY1 and NY2 populations 21 days after treatment (DAT). Greater than 98% control of the NE_SUS population was achieved with tested POST herbicides, except mesotrione (62% control). Furthermore, atrazine, chlorimuron + thifensulfuron, and mesotrione were the least effective in controlling NY1 and NY2 populations (42% to 59% control and 50% to 67% shoot dry weight reductions, respectively). These results confirm the first report of GR waterhemp in NY. Growers should adopt effective alternative POST herbicides tested in this study to manage GR waterhemp.

The opportunity to increase soybean yield has prompted Illinois farmers to plant soybean earlier than historical norms. Extending the growing season with an earlier planting date might alter the relationship between soybean growth and weed emergence timings, potentially altering the optimal herbicide application timings to minimize crop yield loss due to weed interference and ensure minimal weed seed production. The objective of this research was to examine various herbicide treatments applied at different timings and rates to assess the effect on weed control and yield in early-planted soybean. Field experiments were conducted in 2021 at three locations across central Illinois to determine effective chemical strategies for weed management in early-planted soybean. PRE treatments consisted of a S-metolachlor + metribuzin premix applied at planting or just prior to soybean emergence at 0.5X (883 + 210 g ai ha−1) or 1X (1,766 + 420 g ai ha−1) label-recommended rates. POST treatments were applied when weeds reached 10 cm tall and consisted of 1X rates of glufosinate (655 g ai ha−1) + glyphosate (1,260 g ae ha−1) + ammonium sulfate, without or with pyroxasulfone at a 0.5X (63 g ai ha−1) or 1X (126 g ai ha−1) rate. Treatments comprising both a full rate of PRE followed by a POST resulted in the greatest and most consistent weed control at the final evaluation timing. The addition of pyroxasulfone to POST treatments did not consistently reduce late-season weed emergence. The lack of a consistent effect by pyroxasulfone could be attributed to suppression of weeds by soybean canopy closure due to earlier soybean development. The full rate of PRE extended the timing of POST application 2 to 3 wk for all treatments at all locations except Urbana. Full-rate PRE treatments also reduced the time between the POST application and soybean canopy closure. Overall, a full-rate PRE reduced early-season weed interference and minimized soybean yield loss due to weed interference.

We evaluated herbicides for controlling the annual grass ventenata [Ventenata dubia (Leers) Coss.], with particular interest in indaziflam, a preemergence cellulose biosynthesis inhibitor. In 2016, indaziflam was applied postemergence alone and in mixture with glyphosate, imazapic, propoxycarbazone-sodium, or rimsulfuron to an improved pasture in southwestern Montana. A non-sprayed control was included for comparison purposes. Canopy cover of each species was assessed annually for 7 yr; cover was grouped by life-form and longevity, and species richness was calculated. Five years (2021) after treatment, the seedbank was assessed. Our results indicated that treatments including indaziflam reduced V. dubia cover 1 to 3 yr and even up to 6 yr after application, with V. dubia cover being zero or close to zero. However, at 7 yr (2023) after treatment, V. dubia was low across all treatments, including the non-sprayed control. Perennial grasses and forbs and annual forbs were generally unaffected by any treatment and did not increase in cover over the 7 yr, even though V. dubia decreased. Two years after treatment, species richness was lowest in treatments that included indaziflam, but at 7 yr, species richness was similar across all treatments. Indaziflam depleted the monocot and dicot seedbank, with fewer than 5 seedlings of any species emerging from treatments that included indaziflam, while other treatments resulted in 60 to 165 seedlings per sample (40 cm3 of soil). In summary, at our study site, a single application of indaziflam controlled V. dubia for 6 yr, appeared to deplete the seedbank at 5 yr, and cover of perennial and annual vegetation and species richness was unaffected. By the end of the study, though, V. dubia cover appeared to be influenced by factors other than herbicide treatments, possibly variable precipitation over time, an exclusion of grazing, and competitive perennial grasses dominating the site.

An experiment was conducted in 2022 and 2023 near Rocky Mount and Clayton, NC, to evaluate residual herbicide-coated fertilizer for cotton tolerance and Palmer amaranth control. Treatments included acetochlor, atrazine, dimethenamid-P, diuron, flumioxazin, fluometuron, fluridone, fomesafen, linuron, metribuzin, pendimethalin, pyroxasulfone, pyroxasulfone + carfentrazone, S-metolachlor, and sulfentrazone. Each herbicide was individually coated on granular ammonium sulfate (AMS) and top-dressed at 321 kg ha−1 (67 kg N ha−1) onto 5- to 7-leaf cotton. The check plots received the equivalent rate of nonherbicide-treated AMS. Before top-dress, all plots (including the check) were treated with glyphosate and glufosinate to control previously emerged weeds. All herbicides except metribuzin resulted in transient cotton injury. Cotton response to metribuzin varied by year and location. In 2022, metribuzin caused 11% to 39% and 8% to 17% injury at the Clayton and Rocky Mount locations, respectively. In 2023, metribuzin caused 13% to 32% injury at Clayton and 73% to 84% injury at Rocky Mount. Pyroxasulfone (91%), pyroxasulfone + carfentrazone (89%), fomesafen (87%), fluridone (86%), flumioxazin (86%), and atrazine (85%) controlled Palmer amaranth ≥85%. Pendimethalin and fluometuron were the least effective treatments, resulting in 58% and 62% control, respectively. As anticipated, early season metribuzin injury translated into yield loss; plots treated with metribuzin yielded 640 kg ha−1 and were comparable to yields after linuron (790 kg ha−1) was used. These findings suggest that with the exception of metribuzin, residual herbicides coated onto AMS may be suitable and effective in cotton production, providing growers with additional modes of action for late-season control of multiple herbicide–resistant Palmer amaranth.

New machine-vision technologies like the John Deere See & Spray™ could provide the opportunity to reduce herbicide use by detecting weeds and target-spraying herbicides simultaneously. Experiments were conducted for 2 yr in Keiser, AR, and Greenville, MS, to compare residual herbicide timings and targeted spray applications versus traditional broadcast herbicide programs in glyphosate/glufosinate/dicamba-resistant soybean. Treatments utilized consistent herbicides and rates with a preemergence (PRE) application followed by an early postemergence (EPOST) dicamba application followed by a mid-postemergence (MPOST) glufosinate application. All treatments included a residual at PRE and excluded or included a residual EPOST and MPOST. Additionally, the herbicide application method was considered, with traditional broadcast applications, broadcasted residual + targeted applications of postemergence herbicides (dual tank), or targeted applications of all herbicides (single tank). Targeted applications provided comparable control to broadcast applications with a ≤1% decrease in efficacy and overall control ≥93% for Palmer amaranth, broadleaf signalgrass, morningglory species, and purslane species. Additionally, targeted sprays slightly reduced soybean injury by at most 5 percentage points across all evaluations, and these effects did not translate to a yield increase at harvest. The relationship between weed area and targeted sprayed area also indicates that nozzle angle can influence potential herbicide savings, with narrower nozzle angles spraying less area. On average, targeted sprays saved a range of 28.4% to 62.4% on postemergence herbicides. On the basis of these results, with specific machine settings, targeted application programs could reduce the amount of herbicide applied while providing weed control comparable to that of traditional broadcast applications.

In Georgia plasticulture vegetable production, a single installation of plastic mulch is used for up to five cropping cycles over an 18-mo period. Preplant applications of glyphosate and glufosinate ensure fields are weed-free before transplanting, but recent data suggest that residual activity of these herbicides may pose a risk to transplanted vegetables. Glyphosate and glufosinate were applied preplant in combination with three different planting configurations, including 1) a new plant hole into new mulch, 2) a preexisting plant hole, 3) or a new plant hole spaced 15 cm from a preexisting plant hole (adjacent). Following herbicide application, overhead irrigation was used to remove residues from the mulch before punching transplanting holes for tomato, cucumber, or squash. Visible injury; widths; biomass; and yield of tomato, cucumber, or squash were not influenced by herbicide in the new mulch or adjacent planting configurations. When glyphosate was applied at 5.0 kg ae ha−1 and the new crop was planted into preexisting holes, tomato was injured by 45%, with reduced heights, biomass, and yields; at 2.5 kg ae ha−1 injury of 8% and a biomass reduction was observed. Cucumber and squash were injured by 23% to 32% by glyphosate at 5.0 kg ae ha−1, with reductions in growth and early-season yield; lower rates did not influence crop growth or production when the crop was placed into a preexisting plant hole. Glufosinate applied at the same rates did not affect tomato growth or yield when planted into preexisting plant holes. Cucumber, when planted into preexisting plant holes, was injured by 43% to 75% from glufosinate, with reductions in height and biomass, and yield losses of 1.3 to 2.6 kg ai ha−1; similar results from glufosinate were observed in squash. In multi-crop plasticulture production, growers should ensure vegetable transplants are placed a minimum of 15 cm away from soil exposed to these herbicides.

Trifludimoxazin is a novel protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO)-inhibiting herbicide currently under development for foliar and residual control of several problematic weeds in preplant applications for soybean production. Field experiments were conducted in 2017 and 2018 to evaluate the foliar efficacy of trifludimoxazin applied alone and in combination with other herbicides on waterhemp, giant ragweed, and horseweed. Foliar applications of trifludimoxazin alone at 12.5 or 25.0 g ai ha−1 were highly efficacious on glyphosate-resistant waterhemp (94% to 99% control) and moderately effective on giant ragweed (78% to 79% control) and resulted in minor efficacy on horseweed (≤20% control). Combinations of trifludimoxazin with glufosinate, glyphosate, paraquat, or saflufenacil remained highly effective (≥91% control) on waterhemp and giant ragweed. All herbicide mixtures with trifludimoxazin applied to horseweed were classified as additive interactions. Greenhouse experiments and Isobole analysis indicated that trifludimoxazin mixtures with glyphosate and glufosinate on waterhemp and giant ragweed were additive. Mixtures of trifludimoxazin + paraquat were slightly antagonistic under greenhouse conditions when applied to either waterhemp or giant ragweed, whereas trifludimoxazin + saflufenacil was synergistic when applied to giant ragweed. Overall, trifludimoxazin applied alone at 12.5 or 25.0 g ha−1 is effective for managing waterhemp and, to an extent, giant ragweed, but not horseweed, in preplant burndown applications. Furthermore, the addition of glufosinate, glyphosate, paraquat, or saflufenacil to applications of trifludimoxazin does not appreciably reduce weed control for these mixtures. As such, applications of trifludimoxazin alone and in combination with these herbicides may be utilized for effective preplant management of several problematic weeds in soybean.

Palmer amaranth with resistance to dicamba, glufosinate, and protoporphyrinogen oxidase inhibitors has been documented in several southern states. With extensive use of these and other herbicides in South Carolina, a survey was initiated in fall 2020 and repeated in fall 2021 and 2022 to determine the relative response of Palmer amaranth accessions to selected preemergence and postemergence herbicides. A greenhouse screening experiment was conducted in which accessions were treated with three preemergence (atrazine, S-metolachlor, and isoxaflutole) and six postemergence (glyphosate, thifensulfuron-methyl, fomesafen, glufosinate, dicamba, and 2,4-D) herbicides at the 1× and 2× use rates. Herbicides were applied shortly after planting (preemergence) or at the 2- to 4-leaf growth stage (postemergence). Percent survival was evaluated 5 to 14 d after application depending on herbicide activity. Sensitivity to atrazine preemergence was lower for 49 and 33 accessions out of 115 to atrazine applied preemergence at the 1× and 2× rate, respectively. Most of the accessions (90%) were controlled by isoxaflutole applied preemergence at the 1× rate. Response to S-metolachlor applied preemergence indicated that 34% of the Palmer amaranth accessions survived the 1× rate (>60% survival). Eleven accessions exhibited reduced sensitivity to fomesafen applied postemergence; however, these percentages were not different from the 0% survivor group. Glyphosate applied postemergence at the 1× rate did not control most accessions (79%). Palmer amaranth response to thifensulfuron-methyl applied postemergence varied across the accessions, with only 36% and 28% controlled at the 1× rate and 2× rate, respectively. All accessions were controlled by 2,4-D, dicamba, or glufosinate when they were applied postemergence. Palmer amaranth accessions from this survey exhibited reduced susceptibility to several herbicides commonly used in agronomic crops in South Carolina. Therefore, growers should use multiple management tactics to minimize the evolution of herbicide resistance in Palmer amaranth in South Carolina.

Recently, farmers in Brazil have observed a decline in efficacy of glyphosate, chlorimuron, and imazethapyr control of smooth pigweed (Amaranthus hybridus L.). The objectives of this study were to quantify the resistance of Amaranthus in Brazil to glyphosate and acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides, elucidate the mechanism of resistance, and assess the frequency of shifts in sensitivity to glyphosate and chlorimuron in Brazil. Dose–response assays were conducted in a greenhouse with glyphosate, chlorimuron, and imazethapyr. This was followed by sequencing of the EPSPS and ALS genes. Additionally, 740 Amaranthus populations across several Brazilian states were monitored over 4 yr, subjected to a single discriminatory dose of glyphosate and chlorimuron. The populations BR18Asp051 and BR21Asp205 were resistant to glyphosate, chlorimuron, and imazethapyr. The elevated resistance level to glyphosate in these populations is attributed to multiple amino acid substitutions (TAP-IVS) in the EPSPS gene; and cross-resistance to sulfonylureas and imidazolinones is conferred by the Trp-574-Leu substitution in the ALS gene in both populations. Overall, resistance distribution indicated that 88% of the sampled populations were considered sensitive to glyphosate, while 66% were sensitive to chlorimuron. Furthermore, 10% of the samples demonstrated multiple resistance to both active ingredients. A shift in glyphosate sensitivity was observed in four states in Brazil; however, sensitivity shifts to chlorimuron were more widely dispersed in Brazilian agricultural regions.

Cover crop adoption is increasing among growers with the occurrence of herbicide-resistant weed species. A field study conducted at three sites from autumn 2021 through the crop harvest in 2022 in Alabama aimed to evaluate the combined effect of cover crop residue and herbicides for weed control and improved cotton lint yield. The experiment was conducted in split-plot design with main plots consisting of six cover crop treatments: cereal rye, crimson clover, oat, radish, cover crop mixture, and winter fallow. The subplots included four herbicide treatments: (i) preemergence, pendimethalin + fomesafen, (ii) postemergence, dicamba + glyphosate + S-metolachlor, (iii) preemergence followed by postemergence, and (iv) nontreated (NT) check. Cover crops, excluding radish, exhibited greater weed biomass reduction than winter fallow with corresponding herbicide treatments of either preemergence, postemergence, or preemergence + postemergence as compared to control (winter fallow and NT check). Considering preemergence + postemergence treatment, cereal rye, crimson clover, oat, and cover crop mixture provided >95% weed biomass reduction as compared to control. Looking at the overall effect of cover crop, cereal rye outperformed and showed greater weed biomass reduction than radish relative to control. Preemergence + postemergence herbicide treatment resulted in greater lint yield than other treatments. Cotton in cereal rye plots had a greater lint yield than in winter fallow at one out of three locations. In conclusion, integrating herbicides and incorporating high-residue cover crops such as cereal rye is an effective weed management strategy to control troublesome weeds.

Multiple herbicide classes resistant (MHCR) kochia poses a serious concern for producers in the Central Great Plains, including western Kansas. Greenhouse and field experiments were conducted at Kansas State University Research and Extension Centers near Hays and Garden City, KS to evaluate pyridate-based postemergence (POST) herbicide mixtures for controlling MHCR kochia. One previously confirmed MHCR population (resistant to atrazine, glyphosate, dicamba, and fluroxypyr) and a susceptible (SUS) kochia population were tested in a greenhouse study. The kochia population at Hays field site was resistant to atrazine, dicamba, and glyphosate while kochia population at Garden City site was resistant to atrazine and glyphosate. Colby’s analysis revealed synergistic interactions when pyridate was mixed with atrazine, dicamba, dichlorprop-p, fluroxypyr, glyphosate, or halauxifen/fluroxypyr and resulted in ≥94% control and shoot dry biomass reduction of MHCR kochia in a greenhouse study. Similarly, synergistic interactions were observed for MHCR kochia control in fallow field studies at both sites when pyridate was mixed with glyphosate or atrazine. Kochia control was increased from 26% to 90% with the application of glyphosate + pyridate and from 28% to 95% with atrazine + pyridate at both sites as compared to separate applications of glyphosate or atrazine. This is the first report for such a strong synergistic effect for both glyphosate and atrazine mixtures with pyridate on a weed resistant to both. All other pyridate-based herbicide mixtures showed an additive interaction and resulted in better control of MHCR kochia (87 to 100%) as compared to their individual applications (23 to 92%) across both sites except 2,4-D. These results suggest that pyridate can play a crucial role in various POST herbicide mixtures for effective control of MHCR kochia.

Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Watson, AMAPA) is one of the most troublesome weeds in North America due to its rapid growth rate, substantial seed production, competitiveness and the evolution of herbicide-resistant populations. Though frequently encountered in the South, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States, A. palmeri was recently identified in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] fields in Genesee, Orange, and Steuben counties, NY, where glyphosate was the primary herbicide for in-crop weed control. This research, conducted in 2023, aimed to (1) describe the dose response of three putative resistant NY A. palmeri populations to glyphosate, (2) determine their mechanisms of resistance, and (3) assess their sensitivity to other postemergence herbicides commonly used in NY crop production systems. Based on the effective dose necessary to reduce aboveground biomass by 50% (ED50), the NY populations were 42 to 67 times more resistant to glyphosate compared with a glyphosate-susceptible population. Additionally, the NY populations had elevated EPSPS gene copy numbers ranging from 25 to 135 located within extrachromosomal circular DNA (eccDNA). Label rate applications of Weed Science Society of America (WSSA) Group 2 herbicides killed up to 42% of the NY populations of A. palmeri. Some variability was observed among populations in response to WSSA Group 5 and 27 herbicides. All populations were effectively controlled by labeled rates of herbicides belonging to WSSA Groups 4, 10, 14, and 22. Additional research is warranted to confirm whether NY populations have evolved multiple resistance to herbicides within other WSSA groups and to develop effective A. palmeri management strategies suitable for NY crop production.

Deertongue is a perennial, warm-season grass, and is problematic in naturalized areas of golf courses due to limited control options. Research was conducted to evaluate several herbicides for deertongue control in naturalized areas consisting primarily of fine fescue. Greenhouse studies assessed 24 herbicide admixtures and indicated that fluazifop, glyphosate, imazapic, and thiencarbazone + iodosulfuron + dicamba (TID) reduced deertongue biomass by >80% at 10 wk after initial treatment (WAIT). Subsequent field trials were conducted on golf course naturalized areas. The first site was on a woodland edge and was partially shaded for 6 h each day, and the second trial site was 50 m away from the woodland edge and not subjected to more than 1 h of daily shade. At 9 WAIT, fluazifop at 420 g ai ha−1 applied once or three times at 3-wk intervals and topramezone at 37 g ai ha−1 applied thrice at 3-wk intervals injured fine fescue by ≤10% at both sites. Glyphosate applied at 1,120 g ae ha−1, imazapic at 105 g ai ha−1, and imazapic at 53 g ai ha−1 tank-mixed with glyphosate at 560 g ae ha−1 injured fine fescue by ≥50% under shaded conditions, whereas glyphosate alone did not injure fine fescue under sunny conditions. Fine fescue was completely recovered by 52 WAIT from injury following herbicide treatments, except for glyphosate-containing treatments at the shaded site and glyphosate + imazapic at both sites. At 52 WAIT, glyphosate-containing treatments and sequential applications of fluazifop controlled deertongue by ≥93% and reduced shoot density to ≤5 shoots m−2 averaged over both sites. Fluazifop at 420 g ha−1 applied thrice at 3-wk intervals selectively controls deertongue with excellent safety to fine fescue. Glyphosate also controls deertongue, but unacceptably injures fine fescue when managed under shaded conditions. Future research will assess how different light intensities influence fine fescue epicuticular wax deposits and associated response to glyphosate.

Integrated weed management practices that reduce selection for resistance on herbicides are critical to delay resistance. To quantify the reduction in selection for resistance placed on Palmer amaranth from 2,4-D applied postemergence in cotton, an experiment was conducted three times in Georgia during 2020 and 2021 evaluating the benefits of (i) a cover crop, (ii) preemergence herbicides, and (iii) timeliness of applications. When a timely total-postemergence program of glyphosate + 2,4-D was applied three times over the season in a conventionally tilled system, 281,690 glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth plants ha–1 were exposed to 2,4-D. Over 61,500 of these plants were exposed to multiple 2,4-D applications. Altering the production system to conservation tillage, and including a rolled-rye cover crop, reduced the total number of plants exposed to 2,4-D for the season by 72% and the number of plants exposed multiple times by 60%. Even more effective, including a mixture of residual preemergence herbicides reduced the number of plants exposed to 2,4-D at least once over 99.9%, and reduced multiple exposures over 99.3% for the season; this benefit was observed for both conventional and conservation tillage systems. Delaying the initial application of the total-postemergence program did not influence the number of Palmer amaranth plants treated at least once but increased the number of plants treated multiple times by a factor of 3.7 times. As a result of early-season weed competition, cotton height and yield reductions were also associated with both lack of preemergence residuals and delayed postemergence applications. When considering the goal of minimizing the number of Palmer amaranth treated with a postemergence application of 2,4-D in a cotton system, the preemergence was the most effective option followed by (fb) the cover crop fb making timely postemergence applications. However, the most effective approach was to utilize each of these tactics in the same growing season.

Tiafenacil is registered in the United States for use in annual crops such as corn and soybean, but not on orchard crops. Field studies were conducted to determine orchard crop safety and efficacy of tiafenacil on important California orchard weeds. To evaluate crop safety, tiafenacil was applied at 74, 148, and 222 g ai ha−1 alone and with 38 g ai ha−1 of tolpyralate three times per year at the base of almond, pistachio, prune, and walnut trees. The first treatment was applied 2 mo after the trees had been transplanted. In all four tree crop experiments, treatments were applied once in May 2020, then three times again during the winter of 2021 and 2022 at 21-d treatment intervals. There were no visual foliar injury symptoms or treatment-related effects on tree trunk diameter change even at the highest tested rate of tiafenacil applied seven times over three growing seasons. In a separate study of weed control, in most instances, tiafenacil applied at 12 g ai ha−1 performed similarly to that of tiafenacil plus glufosinate. Control of glyphosate-resistant hairy fleabane with tiafenacil applied alone at 25 g ai ha−1 was 65% by 14 d after treatment. Tiafenacil applied at 50 g ai ha−1 to hairy fleabane performed similarly to glufosinate plus glyphosate. In a greenhouse study, tiafenacil applied at 12 g ha−1 provided 95% to 100% control of barnyardgrass and junglerice, and there was no significant difference between tiafenacil applied alone or with glufosinate. Saflufenacil applied alone or in a mixture with glufosinate was not as effective as the tiafenacil treatments for grass weed control. Based on experiments conducted over three growing seasons in four tree fruit and tree nut crops, tiafenacil crop safety appeared to be acceptable even at up to 2- or 3-fold the expected use rate.

The adsorption mechanism of iso-propylammonium (PAH+), the cationic component of Roundup, by various homoionic montmorillonites and the structures of the associations obtained in the interlayer space were investigated, using infrared, X-ray, and carbon analysis methods. Adsorption from aqueous and ethanol solutions of Roundup was studied. The infrared spectra were compared with those obtained by the treatment of montmorillonites with ethanol and CCl4 solutions of the free iso-propylamine (PA). The adsorption of PA from ethanol gives rise to protonation of the amine. PA sorbed from CCl4 solution forms an ammonium-amine association. Adsorption of PAH+ from alcohol solution of Roundup occurs by the mechanism of cation exchange. With transition metal exchangeable cations, PAH+ is sorbed in excess, forming hydrogen bonds between NH3+ groups and hydroxyls resulting from dissociation of water molecules. The process of adsorption of PAH+ from aqueous solutions of Roundup depends on the concentration of the solution. If montmorillonite is reacted with 0.5% solution of Roundup, PAH+ is adsorbed by exchanging metal cations and the adsorption capacity of the clay does not exceed the c.e.c. If the montmorillonite is reacted with 5.0% solution of Roundup, the PAH+ exchanges protons originating from the hydrolysis of the interlayer water. Protons which are transferred from the interlayer space to the water solution are accepted by the anion component of Roundup. The amounts of PAH+ adsorbed from concentrated Roundup solutions are much higher than the cation exchange capacity of montmorillonite. Hydrogen bonds are formed between the ammonium and water or hydroxyl groups on the interlayer space. With the trivalent exchange ions Al and Fe, which tend to polymerize in the interlayer space, excess sorption gives rise to hydrogen bonding of NH3+ to oxygen of the polymer.

The reaction between the herbicide “Roundup,” (PAH)3G, which is the commercial name of the iso-propylammonium salt of glyphosate (H3G, N-phosphonomethyl glycine), and montmorillonite was studied. The adsorption of the anionic component of Roundup glyphosate anion, G−3, from an ethanol solution is achieved by repeated immersion of the clay film in the alcohol solution followed by drying for 6–12 hr after each immersion. During the adsorption process the surface acidity of the interlayer space must be sufficiently high to protonate the anion. A zwitterion glyphosate is thereby formed in the interlayer space. Association forms are obtained in the interlayer space in which the COOH and the PO3H groups are linked to the exchangeable cations through water bridges. Adsorption of the glyphosate anion from aqueous solution of Roundup occurs when this anion forms a neutrally or positively charged complex with the exchangeable cation. This may occur with Al- and Fe-montmorillonite, when the molar ratio glyphosate:metal is such that a complex with a 1:1 ratio can be formed in the interlayer space. To clarify the reaction mechanism, adsorption of glycine by montmorillonite from ethanol solution was also studied. The associations obtained between glyphosate and exchangeable cations are less variable than those obtained between glycine and exchangeable cations in the interlayer space of montmorillonite. The following species of adsorbed glycine were identified: glycinium cation, zwitterion glycine, glycine complexed with metal cations either as a monodentate or as a bidentate ligand. In the latter case a chelate is formed.

Giant smutgrass [Sporobolus indicus (L.) R. Br. var. pyramidalis (P. Beauv.) Veldkamp] is an invasive species in grasslands, and herbicide application has been the most efficient management method to suppress this weed. Experiments were conducted in 2017 and 2018 to determine the effects of wiping glyphosate and hexazinone on S. indicus var. pyramidalis. A dose–response experiment using a handheld weed wiper was established with 20 treatments comprising two herbicides (glyphosate and hexazinone), uni- and bidirectional wiping methods, and 5 herbicide concentrations (6.25% v/v, 12.5% v/v, 25.0% v/v, 50.0% v/v, and 100% v/v basis). Data were collected 30 and 60 d after treatment (DAT). An ATV-mounted roto-type weed-wiper experiment was established in a strip-plot arrangement, with mowing as the horizontal strip, the wiping method (unidirectional vs. bidirectional) randomized as the vertical strip with three dosages of each herbicide for a total of 12 wiping treatments. Data were collected at 35 and 90 DAT. The percent plant mortality was calculated using differences in pre- and posttreatment plant counts. ANOVA and log-logistic linear regression were used to analyze the data. The dose–response experiment showed that S. indicus var. pyramidalis mortality increased with herbicide concentration, and mortality was greater with the bidirectional wiping method compared with the unidirectional method. Treatments wiped bidirectionally with glyphosate at 70% v/v, hexazinone at 30% v/v, and hexazinone at 60% v/v resulted in S. indicus var. pyramidalis mortality ranging from 75% to 98% by 90 DAT across all locations. The ATV-mounted weed-wiper experiment showed that mowing before herbicide application with weed wipers decreased the efficacy of both herbicides. Overall, both experiments indicate that S. indicus var. pyramidalis should be wiped bidirectionally using either glyphosate (70% v/v) or hexazinone (at least 30% v/v) to obtain satisfactory control. Further work should be conducted to determine whether seasonality impacts the response of S. indicus var. pyramidalis to mowing and the application of these herbicides.

Invasion by nonnative woody species poses a major threat to the environment, biodiversity, and economies worldwide. Nahuel Huapi National Park in Argentina is a protected area for habitat conservation that harbors several invasive Pinaceae species, where Douglas-fir [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco] is one of the most aggressive and abundant conifer tree invaders. Management of invasions in protected areas must include efficient, easy to deploy, and cost-effective techniques, while reducing the impact on native ecosystems. Because the region has no control measures applied other than conventional felling, we analyzed the effectiveness of two systemic herbicides (glyphosate and aminopyralid + triclopyr) at two different concentrations, applied with the drill and fill method. We then quantified defoliation of P. menziesii trees 6, 12, and 24 mo after application and performed an economic cost analysis to determine profitability. For the application, the trees were grouped into diameter at breast height classes and randomly assigned to one of the four treatments. Herbicide doses were adjusted according to tree size. We found that glyphosate at high concentrations completely defoliated 33% of the trees after 6 mo and 87% after 12 and 24 mo. Glyphosate at low concentrations defoliated almost 30% of the trees after 24 mo, most of which were smaller trees. The aminopyralid + triclopyr treatment did not produce significant defoliation at any of the tested concentrations. When compared with conventional felling, the drill and fill method was found to reduce removal costs by 98%. We observe that differences in costs are mainly due to dead trees that remain standing, decompose slowly, and do not generate costs associated with their removal and debris management. Drill and fill is a suitable method for treating scattered trees in a native forest community, with reduced environmental consequences compared with other removal techniques currently applied within conservation areas of the Patagonian forest.
