The Hele-Shaw–Cahn–Hilliard model, coupled with phase separation, is numerically simulated to demonstrate the formation of anomalous fingering patterns in a radial displacement of a partially miscible binary-fluid system. The composition of injected fluid is set to be less viscous than the displaced fluid and within the spinodal or metastable phase-separated region, in which the second derivative of the free energy is negative or positive, respectively. Because of phase separation, concentration evolves non-monotonically between the injected and displaced fluids. The simulations reveal four areas of the concentration distribution between the fluids: the inner core; the low-concentration grooves/high-concentration ridges; the isolated fluid fragments or droplets; the mixing zone. The grooves/ridges and the fragments/droplets, which are the unique features of phase separation, form in the spinodal and metastable regions. Four typical types of patterns are categorized: core separation (CS); fingering separation (FS); separation fingering (SF); lollipop fingering, in the order of the dominance of phase separation, respectively. For the patterns of CS and FS, isolated fluid fragments or droplets around the inner core are the main features. Fingering formation is better maintained with droplets in the SF pattern if the phase separation is relatively weaker than viscous fingering (VF). Even continuous fingers are well preserved in the case of dominant VF; phase separation results in lollipop-shaped fingers. The evolving trend of the patterns is in line with the experiments. These patterns are summarized in a pattern diagram, mainly by the magnitude of the second derivative of the free energy profile.

When a less-viscous solution of a reactant $A$ displaces a more-viscous solution of another reactant $B$, a fast bimolecular $A + B \rightarrow C$ reaction decreasing locally the viscosity can influence the viscous fingering (VF) instability taking place between the two miscible solutions. We show both experimentally and numerically that, for monotonic viscosity profiles, this decrease in viscosity has opposite effects on the fingering pattern depending on the injection flow rate. For high flow rates, the reaction enhances the shielding effect, creating VF patterns with a lower surface density, i.e. thinner fingers covering a smaller area. In contrast, for lower flow rates, the reaction stabilises the VF dynamics, i.e. delays the instability and gives a less-deformed displacement, reaching in some cases an almost-stable displacement. Nonlinear simulations of reactive VF show that these opposite effects at low or high flow rates can only be reproduced if the diffusivity of $A$ is larger than that of $B$, which favours a larger production of the product $C$ and, hence, a larger viscosity decrease. The analysis of one-dimensional viscosity profiles reconstructed on the basis of a one-dimensional reaction–diffusion–advection model confirms that the VF stabilisation at low Péclet number and in the presence of differential diffusion of reactants originates from an optimum reaction-driven decrease in the gradient of the monotonic viscosity profile.

The impact of a chemical reaction, $A+B \rightarrow C$, on the stability of a miscible radial displacement in a porous medium is established. Our study involves a comprehensive analysis employing both linear stability analysis and nonlinear simulations. Through linear stability analysis, the onset of instability for monotonic as well as non-monotonic viscosity profiles corresponding to the same end-point viscosity are discussed and compared. We establish a $(R_b,R_c)$ phase plane for a wide range of Damköhler number ($Da$) and Péclet number ($Pe$) into stable and unstable regions. Here, $R_b=\ln (\mu _B/ \mu _A)$ and $R_c=\ln (\mu _C/ \mu _A)$ and $\mu _{i}$ is the viscosity of fluid $i$ $\in \{A$, $B$, $C$}. The stable zone in the $(R_b, R_c)$ phase plane contracts with increased $Da$ and $Pe$ but never vanishes. It exists even for $Da \rightarrow \infty$. Interestingly, we obtain a $Da$ independent stable region in the neighbourhood of $R_c=R_b$ where no transition occurs in stability despite changes in reaction rate. The study allows us to acquire knowledge about the transition of the stability for varying $Da, Pe$ and different reactions classified using $R_b, R_c$.

In this paper, we investigate a sink-driven three-layer flow in a radial Hele-Shaw cell. The three fluids are of different viscosities, with one fluid occupying an annulus-like domain, forming two interfaces with the other two fluids. Using a boundary integral method and a semi-implicit time stepping scheme, we alleviate the numerical stiffness in updating the interfaces and achieve spectral accuracy in space. The interaction between the two interfaces introduces novel dynamics leading to rich pattern formation phenomena, manifested by two typical events: either one of the two interfaces reaches the sink faster than the other (forming cusp-like morphology), or they come very close to each other (suggesting a possibility of interface merging). In particular, the inner interface can be wrapped by the other to have both scenarios. We find that multiple parameters contribute to the dynamics, including the width of the annular region, the location of the sink, and the mobilities of the fluids.

Melt-front instabilities during the combustion of a spinning polymethylmethacrylate disk in air are investigated. Mainly straight rivulet-type flow patterns were found, though under certain conditions saw-tooth patterns were observed. The measured wavelengths of the instabilities agree with earlier theoretical predictions of driven contact-line instabilities.

We explored the instability dynamics of the viscous fingering interaction in dual displacement fronts by varying the viscosity configuration. Four regimes of rear-dominated fingering, front-dominated fingering, dual fingering and stable were identified. By using the breakthrough time, which refers to the breakup of the dual displacement fronts, the instability dynamics were modelled, and a regime map was developed. These serve as a tool for effectively harnessing the dual displacement fronts for various applications, such as hydrogeology, petroleum, chemical processes and microfluidics.

We study self-similar viscous fingering for the case of divergent flow within a wedge-shaped Hele-Shaw cell. Previous authors have conjectured the existence of a countably infinite number of selected solutions, each distinguished by a different value of the relative finger angle. Interestingly, the associated solution branches have been posited to merge and disappear in pairs as the surface tension decreases. For the first time, we demonstrate how the selection mechanism can be derived based on exponential asymptotics. Asymptotic predictions of the finger-to-wedge angle are additionally given for different sized wedges and surface-tension values. The merging of solution branches is explained; this feature is qualitatively different to the case of classic Saffman–Taylor viscous fingering in a parallel channel configuration. Moreover, because the asymptotic framework does not highly depend on specifics of the wedge geometry, the proposed theory for branch merging in our self-similar problem likely relates much more widely to tip-splitting instabilities in time-dependent flows in circular and other geometries, where the viscous fingers destabilise and divide in two.

Using experiments and a depth-averaged numerical model, we study instabilities of two-phase flows in a Hele-Shaw channel with an elastic upper boundary and a non-uniform cross-section prescribed by initial collapse. Experimentally, we find increasingly complex and unsteady modes of air-finger propagation as the dimensionless bubble speed $Ca$ and level of collapse are increased, including pointed fingers, indented fingers and the feathered modes first identified by Cuttle et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 886, 2020, A20). By introducing a measure of the viscous contribution to finger propagation, we identify a $Ca$ threshold beyond which viscous forces are superseded by elastic effects. Quantitative prediction of this transition between ‘viscous’ and ‘elastic’ reopening regimes across levels of collapse establishes the fidelity of the numerical model. In the viscous regime, we recover the non-monotonic dependence on $Ca$ of the finger pressure, which is characteristic of benchtop models of airway reopening. To explore the elastic regime numerically, we extend the depth-averaged model introduced by Fontana et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 916, 2021, A27) to include an artificial disjoining pressure that prevents the unphysical self-intersection of the interface. Using time simulations, we capture for the first time the majority of experimental finger dynamics, including feathered modes. We show that these disordered states evolve continually, with no evidence of convergence to steady or periodic states. We find that the steady bifurcation structure satisfactorily predicts the bubble pressure as a function of $Ca$, but that it does not provide sufficient information to predict the transition to unsteady dynamics that appears strongly nonlinear.

Gravure printing is a type of printing method that uses metal cylinders with engraved cells that hold ink. The ink is transferred directly to the paper or other material by pressing it against the cylinder. The flow associated with gravure printing includes a flow in a liquid bridge formed in the contact region of the cylinders and a thin-film coating flow of the ink. The flow is governed by viscous and capillary forces. In many cases, the flow is unstable, which leads to the formation of instability patterns on the printed surfaces. The analysis of these instabilities is a very challenging problem, especially since industrial inks are usually rheologically complex. In this experimental and theoretical study, the flow of inks on a rotating cylinder is analysed, accounting for the shear-rate-dependent liquid viscosity. A theoretical solution for the film flow allows us to predict the width of the liquid bridge between two cylinders. Moreover, it is shown that the measured characteristic size of the printed pattern is of the same order as the predicted liquid bridge width. We observe a nearly linear dependence of pattern size and liquid bridge width.

The coupled effects of thermodynamic and hydrodynamic instabilities are studied during viscous fingering (VF). We introduced a modified Cahn–Hilliard phase-field model in conjunction with the Korteweg force in the classical VF model and derived consistent governing equations. The free energy of the partially miscible system is described using a modified Flory–Huggins model, which allows us to investigate the temporal evolution of spatial inhomogeneities. The mass flux in the Cahn–Hilliard equations is modified according to modern diffusion theory. The governing equations have been solved through an in-house model implementation using the COMSOL multiphysics software. We successfully demonstrated the transition from the finger-like structures to the droplet formation during spinodal decomposition as demonstrated experimentally in the literature. Our results are also in agreement with earlier numerical results obtained using a classical Landau type mixing energy. We further systematically studied the effects of the Margules parameter (interaction parameter) and the gradient parameter, which is associated to the thermodynamic length scale and capillary number on the VF. Aysmmetric features of the binary mixture are also investigated showing a stronger thermodynamic effect on the system with increasing phase separation and, hence, droplet formation.

The effect of the initial condition upon the transport dynamics of miscible flowing fluids in a porous medium is investigated under viscosity and density contrasts. Such flows have attracted significant attention due to their importance in many fields of science and engineering, such as $\mathrm {CO}_2$ sequestration and aquifer remediation. Using high-resolution two-dimensional numerical simulations, we illustrate the impact of viscosity and density contrasts on the temporal evolution of the spreading and mixing quantities. We show that such impact depends on the initial shape of the source distribution where the solute is injected and on the intensity of the horizontal background flux. We find that rates of mixing are dependent on whether the solute is more or less viscous than the ambient fluid, a result usually not taken into consideration in studies on gravity fingering. At higher background flux, the effects due to horizontal viscous fingering dominate over gravitational fingering. Our computational analysis also suggests a non-trivial relationship between mixing and the length of the plume's interface under fingering instabilities. Finally, we show how a stratified permeability field can interact with these sources of instabilities and affect the transport behaviour of the plume.

We study numerically the characteristics of fluid–fluid displacement in simple mixed-wet porous micromodels using a dynamic pore network model. The porous micromodel consists of distinct water-wet and oil-wet regions, whose fractions are varied systematically to yield a variety of displacement patterns over a wide range of capillary numbers. We find that the impact of mixed-wettability is most prominent at low capillary numbers, and it depends on the complex interplay between wettability fraction and the intrinsic contact angle of the water-wet regions. For example, the fractal dimension of the displacement pattern is a monotonically increasing function of wettability fraction in flow cells with strongly water-wet clusters, but it becomes non-monotonic with respect to wettability fraction in flow cells with weakly water-wet clusters. Additionally, mixed-wettability also manifests itself in the injection pressure signature, which exhibits fluctuations especially at low wettability fraction. Specifically, preferential filling of water-wet regions leads to reduced effective permeability and higher injection pressure, even at vanishingly small capillary numbers. Finally, we demonstrate that scaling analyses based on a weighted average description of the overall wetting state of the mixed-wet system can effectively capture the variations in observed displacement pattern morphology.

Viscous fingering or Saffman–Taylor instability shows fingering interfacial patterns when a more mobile fluid displaces a less mobile one in porous media. The effective interfacial tension (EIT) is like capillary force, acting at the miscible interface on time scales shorter than interface relaxation. It has been numerically reported so far that the fingers are wider with EIT compared with those without EIT. A recent experiment observed finger widening with increasing flow rate in a miscible system with EIT, which is not observed in classical immiscible and miscible systems. In this study, we have numerically investigated the effect of $Pe$ (which corresponds to the injection flow rates in the experiment) on miscible viscous fingering with/without EIT. We have shown that the fingers are monotonically thinner with an increase in $Pe$ in the system without EIT, while finger widening with increasing $Pe$ is observed in the system with EIT. Furthermore, we have also examined a one-dimensional underlying concentration profile and EIT profile by using a one-dimensional diffusion–convection model because EIT is proportional to the squared concentration gradient. We have then shown that the concentration gradient is steeper and, thus, the EIT is larger as $Pe$ is larger. Therefore, this is the first numerical study that can theoretically verify finger widening with increasing flow rate, which occurs only in a miscible system with EIT to the extent of our targeting EIT values, and explain the mechanism by one-dimensional analysis.

One of the most significant issues in hydrodynamic interfacial instabilities is the growth rate of the interfacial perturbations, which plays an important role in both scientific research (e.g. supernova explosion) and engineering applications (e.g. inertial confinement fusion). Yet the underlying mechanisms of such flow phenomena remain unclear or controversial. In this paper the decoupled mechanisms of two effects are found to dominate the interface growth of the single-mode Rayleigh–Taylor instability (RTI) and Richtmyer–Meshkov instability (RMI) via Layzer's potential-flow model. One is the inertial effect induced by the interfacial density gradient and the acceleration, and the other is the frontal distortion effect stemming from interface shape evolution. The former determines the dominant features of interface evolution, while the latter influences the local concavity and convexity of growth rate such as the overshoot phenomenon. These two effects can be approximated as a linearly decoupled analytical solution if their nonlinear interaction term is neglected. With the decoupled solution, the theoretical growth rates agree well with high-fidelity numerical simulation results. The present result indicates that the long-time evolution of fluid interface in both RTI and RMI at all density ratios can be accurately predicted if both inertia and frontal distortion effects are taken into account. Furthermore, the strong dependence of instability evolution on initial amplitude is quantified based on the effects of decoupling, which sheds light on the physical origin of the overshoot phenomenon.

Fluid interfacial instability induced by gravity or external acceleration, known as the Rayleigh–Taylor instability, plays an important role in both scientific research and industrial application. How to control this instability is challenging. Researchers have been actively exploring the suppression method of applying electric fields parallel to dielectric fluid interfaces. The instability is characterized by the penetration of fingers at the interface. The velocities at the finger tips are the most important quantities since they characterize how fast the penetration occurs. The dynamics of the fingers is nonlinear. We present a nonlinear perturbation procedure for determining the amplitude and velocity of fingers at a Rayleigh–Taylor unstable interface between two incompressible, inviscid, immiscible and perfectly dielectric fluids in the presence of a horizontal electric field in two dimensions. The analytic formulas are displayed explicitly up to the third order of the initial disturbance. The comparison with the data from numerical simulations based on the vortex sheet method shows the theoretical formulas can capture well the nonlinear behaviour of the fingers. It is known that the interplay between the electric field and the fluids can lead to the suppression of interfacial instability. We further analyse the electrical force along the interface and show how this force leads to the instability suppression in our setting. It has been reported numerically in the literature that switching the electric permittivities of the fluids leads to quantitative differences in finger velocity. We show theoretically this phenomenon can only be explained by the nonlinear behaviour of the system.

An initially perturbed interface between two fluids of different densities is usually unstable when driven by an acceleration or a shock wave; it is known as a Rayleigh–Taylor instability or a Richtmyer–Meshkov instability. One of the most significant issues in these instabilities is the spatiotemporal development of fingers generated at the interface, which plays an important role in both scientific research (e.g. supernova explosion) and engineering applications (e.g. inertial confinement fusion). Accurate theoretical solution of these interfacial fingers remains as an unsolved and challenging problem since Taylor's seminal work more than seven decades ago. This paper reports a unified theory established for such phenomena by combining the classical potential-flow theory and a dual-source model to address the long-standing difficulty highlighted by the initial-value sensitivity and strong nonlinearity. It is the first time for a theory to accurately predict the long-time developments in both growth rate and shape curvature of interfacial fingers at all density ratios in two and three dimensions. Moreover, the new theory clearly reveals the nonlinear coupling mechanism for interfacial evolution, and especially explains the origin of overshot in the growth rate curve.

The adhesion of two surfaces relies on the propagation of an adhesion front. What is the dynamics of the front when both surfaces are coated with a thin layer of viscous liquid? Standard criteria from fingering instabilities would predict a stable front since viscous fluid pushes away air of low viscosity. Surprisingly, the front propagation may be unstable and generally leads to growing fingers. We demonstrate with model experiments where the two adhering surfaces are slightly tilted by an angle $\alpha$ that the origin of this interfacial instability relies on feeding the front from the surrounding thin film. We show experimentally that the typical wavelength of the instability is mainly dictated by the thickness of the oil layers $h$. In this wedge geometry, the propagation dynamics is found to follow a $t^{1/2}$ dependence and to saturate for an extension length of the order of $h/\alpha$.

We consider the axisymmetric displacement of an ambient fluid by a second input fluid of lower density and lower viscosity in a horizontal porous layer. If the two fluids have been segregated vertically by buoyancy, then the flow becomes self-similar with the input fluid preferentially flowing near the upper boundary. We show that this axisymmetric self-similar flow is stable to angular-dependent perturbations for any viscosity ratio. The Saffman–Taylor instability is suppressed due to the buoyancy segregation of the fluids. The radial extent of the segregated flow is inversely proportional to the viscosity ratio. This horizontal extension of the intrusion eliminates the discontinuity in the pressure gradient between the fluids associated with the viscosity contrast. Hence at late times, viscous fingering is shut down even for arbitrarily small density differences. The stability is confirmed through numerical integration of a coupled problem for the interface shape and the pressure gradient, and through complementary asymptotic analysis, which predicts the decay rate for each mode. The results are extended to anisotropic and vertically heterogeneous layers. The interface may have relatively steep shock-like regions, but the flow is always stable when the fluids have been segregated by buoyancy, as in a uniform layer.

A numerical insight into the radial displacement of two viscously stable reactants undergoing an infinitely fast chemical reaction is obtained. This work broadens the numerical knowledge about the interaction between chemical reaction and hydrodynamic instability. A suitable transformation is utilised to deal with an infinite dimensionless parameter and reduce computational cost. Viscous fingering instability originates when the product has a different viscosity than the reactants. We calculate the onset time $t_{on}$ when the instability begins to appear for different reactants by varying the log mobility ratio $R_c$ and the Péclet number $Pe$. Based on $t_{on}$, we divide the time domain into stable and unstable zones with respect to instability. This helps to characterise reactants so as to have a flow with/without instability. For a fixed $Pe$ and $\vert R_c \vert$, it is found that $t_{on}$ is early for $R_c > 0$ in contrast to the result for rectilinear displacement. This results in a wider stable zone for $R_c < 0$. Interestingly, it is found that the stable zone can be made independent of $Pe$ by using a careful rescaling and we obtain the dependence of the onset time of instability on $R_c$ and $Pe$ as $t_{on} \propto (\vert R_c\vert Pe^{\beta _1}-\beta _2)^{\beta _3}$ where the constant of proportionality and $\beta _i$, $i=1,2,3$, depend upon the sign of $R_c$. In the unstable zone, we find that the length of the fingers depends upon the sign of $R_c$, which is not observed for any radial displacement of reactants undergoing a slow or moderately fast chemical reaction.

A two-dimensional model for the evolution of the fire line – the interface between burned and unburned regions of a wildfire – is formulated. The fire line normal velocity has three contributions: (i) a constant rate of spread representing convection and radiation effects; (ii) a curvature term that smooths the fire line; and (iii) a Stefan-like term in the direction of the oxygen gradient. While the first two effects are geometrical, (iii) is dynamical and requires the solution of the steady advection–diffusion equation for oxygen, with advection owing to a self-induced ‘fire wind’, modelled by the gradient of a harmonic potential field. The conformal invariance of this coupled pair of partial differential equations, which has the Péclet number $\textit {Pe}$ as its only parameter, is exploited to compute numerically the evolution of both radial and infinitely long periodic fire lines. A linear stability analysis shows that fire line instability is possible, dependent on the ratio of curvature to oxygen effects. Unstable fire lines develop finger-like protrusions into the unburned region; the geometry of these fingers is varied and depends on the relative magnitudes of (i)–(iii). It is argued that for radial fires, the fire wind strength scales with the fire's effective radius, meaning that $\textit {Pe}$ increases in time, so all fire lines eventually become unstable. For periodic fire lines, $\textit {Pe}$ remains constant, so fire line stability is possible. The results of this study provide a possible explanation for the formation of fire fingers observed in wildfires.
