Loose limestone blocks of a newly recognized hydrocarbon-seep deposit from the lower Oligocene Jansen Creek Member of the Makah Formation were collected on a beach terrace close to the mouth of Bullman Creek in Washington State, USA. The limestone consists largely of authigenic carbonate phases, including 13C-depleted fibrous cement forming banded and botryoidal crystal aggregates with δ13C values as low as –23.5 ‰. Lipids extracted from the limestone yielded molecular fossils of anaerobic methanotrophic archaea (ANME), dominated by compounds of an ANME-2/DSS consortium with δ13C values as low as −106 ‰, indicating formation at an ancient methane seep. The fossil inventory of the seep deposit is remarkable, consisting almost solely of echinoid remains, whereas typical seep biota are absent. Varying preservation of the echinoid fossils indicates parautochthonous deposition, corroborated by evidence for high fluid flow at the ancient seep, possibly responsible for displacement of echinoids after death. Although a full taxonomic description of the echinoids cannot be given, almost all fossils were assigned to one taxon of irregular spatangoids, except for a single regular echinoid. Abundance and lifestyle of the irregular spatangoids in the Bullman Creek echinoid seep deposit resemble those of the fossil Tithonia oxfordiana from an upper Jurassic seep deposit in France and extant Sarsiaster griegii from modern seeps in the Gulf of Mexico. The Bullman Creek echinoid deposit probably represents a fossil analogue of the Gulf of Mexico Sarsiaster mass occurrence, indicating that the adaptation of spatangoid echinoids to chemosynthesis-based ecosystems ranges back at least to the earliest Oligocene.

Widely distributed species such as Arbacia stellata adjust patterns of their life history according to local conditions. In the present study the reproductive cycle of this species was analysed throughout a sampling year. Gonadal development cycle, sex ratio, actual fecundity and oocyte size distribution were characterized and the relationship of these reproductive characteristics with environmental variables such as sea surface temperature, photoperiod, chlorophyll a and net primary production evaluated. Our results showed that A. stellata is a gonochoric sea urchin. Gametogenesis was classified into six stages for both sexes (immature, growth, pre-maturity I, pre-maturity II, mature and spawning) and no synchrony was observed for the gonads between individuals. The female to male ratio was close to 1:1 in most months. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) showed significant differences between sexes or months; however, the highest values were observed during spring, with positive correlation with chlorophyll a. No significant differences were observed in the maturity index (MI) between sexes, with a positive correlation with temperature but negative with chlorophyll. Actual fecundity showed wide variations throughout the year and correlation with chlorophyll a and temperature. Oocyte size distribution was unimodal and the predominant frequency was that of mature oocytes. The reproductive cycle of A. stellata has a semi-continuous pattern for both sexes and partial spawning throughout the year in the sampling site. We observed nutrient assimilation in the gonads during spring and a larger reproductive activity from late summer to early winter.

In the type area of the Maastrichtian Stage (northeast Belgium, southeast Netherlands), two species of the rare hemiasterid echinoid genus Leymeriaster were known to date. Here we describe a third, L. campestris sp. nov., from the so-called ‘Laagje van Müller’ (Gemmenich Member, Vaals Formation) at Vaals-Eschberg, southern Limburg (the Netherlands), which is of early Campanian age. It differs from its late Maastrichtian congeners in the area, L. maestrichtensis and L. eluvialis, in that the pore pairs in the frontal groove of ambulacrum III are not in small depressions and the adjacent interambulacral margins are not thickened, raised and/or overhanging. It differs from L. maestrichtensis by the lack of a clear notch in the ambitus in ambulacrum III, and from L. eluvialis in the presence of a distinctly longer groove in ambulacrum III. Leymeriaster campestris sp. nov. is the first undoubted species of Campanian Leymeriaster known from northwest Europe.

A single internal mould of the holasterid echinoid Holaster laevis (Brongniart, 1822) constitutes the first record of this species from the upper portion (‘Upper Holland Marl’) of the Holland Formation (Rijnland Group), of middle-late Albian age, in the Winterswijk area (eastern Netherlands). The geographic range of H. laevis can thus be extended to this part of western Europe, with previous records from southern England (Wiltshire, Devon) and the Département Ain in east-central France.

This paper provides the most up to date list of the Cuban echinoid fauna. Habitat, depth range, distribution and localities in Cuba are presented for this group. I present here the most recent list of shallow-water sea urchins for the Cuban Archipelago. This catalogue increases the number of shallow-water sea urchins for Cuba to 23 species (subspecies included) distributed in seven orders and 19 genera. I have added the occurrence of the sea urchin Schizaster floridiensis for Cuban shallow waters, and expand the known regional distribution range for this species. Furthermore, I report here two new depth ranges for Schizaster floridiensis and Astropyga magnifica that now begin at ten and two metres depth respectively.

Heart urchins (Echinoidea: Spatangoida) are considered infaunal, deposit feeding sea urchins that utilize the surrounding sediment as a source of nutrients. Sediment occupies most of the digestive tract lumen but never enters the gastric caecum, a prominent structure that is filled with a transparent fluid. The aim of this study was to shed light on the nature of the fluid found inside the gastric caecum of a well-studied spatangoid species, Echinocardium cordatum. Our conclusions are based on a three-step-approach: firstly, by following the movement of dyed seawater from the mouth up to the caecal lumen; secondly, by comparing the osmolarity of various body fluids; and thirdly, by describing the particulate content of the gastric caecum. In addition, we employed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to reveal the absence of sediment within the gastric caecum. Our osmolarity measurements show that the coelomic fluid is significantly more concentrated than the caecal fluid, which in turn has an osmolarity similar to seawater. MRI reveals that the gastric caecum, in contrast to the rest of the digestive tract, is always devoid of sediment. Light and electron microscopy observations reveal the presence of a variety of detrital particles suspended in the caecal fluid that are identical to those occurring in seawater sampled over the seafloor. We argue that the fluid filling the gastric caecum must be predominantly seawater, and we propose a scenario that explains seawater circulation in E. cordatum. In this context, the gastric caecum could act as an internal trap for suspended particulate organic matter. We hypothesize that spatangoid sea urchins could have adopted internal suspension feeding as a secondary feeding mode in addition to deposit feeding.

Many different polychaete-echinoderm relationships have been described, from tropical to polar environments. Most of these associations have been generally defined as ‘commensal’, with polychaetes guests usually found on the oral surface of their hosts or, in a very few cases, even inside the host's body. Here we present an inquilinistic association involving two Antarctic species, the polychaete Gorekia crassicirris (Willey, 1902) (Polynoidae) and the irregular sea urchin Abatus nimrodi (Koheler, 1911) (Schizasteridae) found in the Ross Sea. This record is only the second worldwide for this kind of association, after that of the polychaete Benthoscolex cubanus which lives in the gut of the spatangoid Archeopneustes hystrix in Caribbean waters. Gorekia crassicirris seems to be a polyxenous species as it was also observed on another schizasterid, Brachysternaster chescheri Larrain, 1985 in the Weddell Sea. Considering that A. nimrodi is absent from that area and that the two sea urchin species have a disjoint distribution, it is possible that a ‘host-switch’ phenomenon occurred at some stage. We review the available literature to compare the Antarctic pairing with the other known examples of similar associations.

Eight taxa of marine invertebrates, including two new bivalve species, are described from the Low Head Member of the Polonez Cove Formation (latest early Oligocene) cropping out in the Vauréal Peak area, King George Island, West Antarctica. The fossil assemblage includes representatives of Brachiopoda (genera Neothyris sp. and Liothyrella sp.), Bivalvia (Adamussium auristriatum sp. nov., ?Adamussium cf. A. alanbeui Jonkers, and Limatula (Antarctolima) ferraziana sp. nov.), Bryozoa, Polychaeta (serpulid tubes) and Echinodermata. Specimens occur in debris flows deposits of the Low Head Member, as part of a fan delta setting in a high energy, shallow marine environment. Liothyrella sp., Adamussium auristriatum sp. nov. and Limatula ferraziana sp. nov. are among the oldest records for these genera in King George Island. In spite of their restrict number and diversification, bivalves and brachiopods from this study display an overall dispersal pattern that roughly fits in the clockwise circulation of marine currents around Antarctica accomplished in two steps. The first followed the opening of the Tasmanian Gateway at the Eocene/Oligocene boundary, along the eastern margin of Antarctica, and the second took place in post-Palaeogene time, following the Drake Passage opening between Antarctic Peninsula and South America, along the western margin of Antarctica.

A phylogenetic analysis of Jurassic irregular echinoids is realized to explore the origin and early evolution of this important subset of echinoids. The phylogeny is based on 39 characters and considers data from apical system architecture, the corona including tuberculation and spines, Aristotle's lantern, and general test shape. Results corroborate the monophyly of Irregularia, and clarify the phylogenetic interrelationships existing between the main groups of irregular echinoids. Specializations of the Aristotle's lantern, spines, tubercles and phyllodes constitute the apomorphies for different taxa, as for the whole of Irregularia. The phylogenetic signal yielded by these characters highlights the importance of the environmental context of the origin and diversification of irregular echinoids. The definition of ‘irregularity’ is re-examined, rejecting exocyclism and characters of the apical system as appropriate synapomorphies, and stressing the importance of other characters, particularly the high density and small size of tubercles and spines. A new clade name, Infraclypeidae [P], and phylocode designations (stem-based diagnoses) are proposed for the clades Irregularia, Eognathostomata, Microstomata, Neognathostomata and Atelostomata. Other groupings formerly used (Pygasteroida, Galeropygidae and Menopygidae) are considered paraphyletic.
