Lifestyle Medicine is an evidence-based medical discipline that emphasises behaviour change to improve overall health, focusing on mental wellbeing, social connections, healthy eating, physical activity, sleep, and minimising harmful behaviours. The approach bridges clinical practice with public health interventions, targeting both individual and population health. It is effective in preventing, treating, and sometimes reversing chronic diseases through lifestyle modification. Clinicians practising Lifestyle Medicine support actions beyond clinical consultations, advocating for healthy environments and policies. The discipline also addresses the challenges of non-communicable diseases and enhances resilience against infectious diseases. It offers an alternative to over-medicalisation, promoting self-care and lifestyle changes alongside traditional medical treatments. The new medical paradigm recognises the modifiability of gene expression and the importance of lifestyle factors in health outcomes. Lifestyle Medicine is increasingly integrated into medical education and healthcare delivery systems. It aligns with the shift towards person-centred care that focuses on patients’ values and goals, contributing to a more holistic approach to health and wellbeing.

A person-centred approach is central to effective lifestyle discussions, avoiding stigma and blame that can undermine patient motivation and self-efficacy. This involves shifting from a clinician-led model to collaborative consultations that respect patient values and goals, and fosters a partnership between the clinician and the patient. Compassionate care is essential for this approach. To prepare for consultations, health professionals must consider factors such as language, accessibility, and reception staff attitude that can influence the patient’s perception of person-centred care. Health professionals should use open-ended questions and active listening to gather a comprehensive lifestyle history that aligns with patient values and preferences. They should also understand patient concerns and expectations, and use them to build rapport and develop shared treatment goals. Moreover, health professionals must assess relationships and support systems that can significantly impact health outcomes, and explore positive mental states and life satisfaction to assess mental wellbeing comprehensively. By establishing a therapeutic relationship through compassionate history taking, health professionals can lay the foundations for effective behaviour change interventions.

Traditional clinical training has often lacked the leadership and management skills necessary for practitioners to effectively drive change. Despite facing systemic pressures and resource limitations, clinicians can be agents of change by innovating within their work environments. Practising self-care and understanding the benefits of Lifestyle Medicine are essential for healthcare practitioners to sustain their wellbeing and energy for these changes. The transformation of healthcare environments to encourage healthier choices can profoundly affect the wellbeing of both staff and patients. Large-scale change can be fostered by engaging with the community and connecting patients to local groups and activities. The UK has seen examples of successful Lifestyle Medicine projects and we explore some examples of success in this chapter. To innovate in healthcare, one must be clear about their motivation, be prepared to initiate projects without initial funding, plan for their evaluation, and ensure that the projects are enjoyable for all participants involved.
Predicting healthcare costs for chronic diseases is challenging for actuaries, as these costs depend not only on traditional risk factors but also on patients’ self-perception and treatment behaviors. To address this complexity and the unobserved heterogeneity in cost data, we propose a dual-structured learning statistical framework that integrates covariate clustering into finite mixture of generalized linear models, effectively handling high-dimensional, sparse, and highly correlated covariates while capturing their effects on specific subgroups. Specifically, this framework is realized by imposing a penalty on the prior similarities among covariates, and we further propose an expectation-maximization-alternating direction method of multipliers (EM-ADMM) algorithm to address the complex optimization problem by combining EM with the ADMM. This paper validates the stability and effectiveness of the framework through simulation and empirical studies. The results show that our framework can leverage shared information among high-dimensional covariates to enhance fitting and prediction accuracy, while covariate clustering can also uncover the covariates’ network relationships, providing valuable insights into diabetic patients’ self-perception data.
Robust research has established that preexisting physical and mental health conditions increase risk for adverse psychiatric outcomes after disasters. However, it is unclear if increased risk is independent of disaster exposure, and most studies have relied on retrospective reports of pre-disaster functioning.
Methods
In a pre-post sample of high-risk Puerto Rican adults (N = 361) who experienced Hurricanes Irma and Maria, we assessed: 1) whether indicators of pre-disaster depression and physical health conditions were associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) symptoms; and 2) whether the effects of pre-disaster depression and physical health conditions on PTSD and MDD symptoms were indirect via disaster exposure or had exacerbated the effects of disaster exposure on PTSD and MDD symptoms.
Results
Pre-disaster depression and physical health problems were significantly associated with higher post-disaster MDD symptoms (B = 1.50, SE = 0.36, p < .001, and B = 0.21; SE = 0.09, P = 0.016), but not PTSD symptoms. Indirect effects of pre-disaster depression and physical health symptoms via disaster exposure were non-significant, and neither moderated the association of disaster exposure on PTSD and MDD symptoms.
Conclusions
Research is needed to understand other pathways through which pre-disaster health conditions predict post-disaster mental health.
To evaluate the relationship between the food environment in favelas and the presence of arterial hypertension and diabetes among women in the context of social vulnerability.
Design:
A cross-sectional and partially ecological population-based study was conducted in a Brazilian capital city. The healthiness and availability of ultra-processed foods in the food environment were assessed through retailer audits using the AUDITNOVA instrument. The presence of diabetes and arterial hypertension was evaluated based on self-reported prior medical diagnosis. Logistic regression models were applied using generalised estimating equations, adjusted for age, education, race/skin colour and poverty status.
Participants:
1882 adult women of reproductive age (20–44 years).
Results:
It was found that 10·9 % of women were hypertensive and 3·2 % had diabetes. The likelihood of having diabetes and arterial hypertension decreases with higher levels of healthiness in the food environment (diabetes (OR: 0·25; 95 % CI: 0·07, 0·97)/arterial hypertension (OR: 0·45; 95 % CI: 0·24, 0·81)) and increases with greater availability of ultra-processed foods in their living area (diabetes (OR: 2·18; 95 % CI: 1·13, 4·21)/arterial hypertension (OR: 1·64; 95 % CI: 1·09, 2·47)).
Conclusions:
These results suggest that characteristics of the consumer food environment have a significant effect on the occurrence of chronic diseases among socially vulnerable women, adding to the existing evidence in the literature and highlighting the need for integrated health care.
This study extends debates on implications of informal welfare for population health and well-being. It examines whether cultural and ideational precepts such as social capital, affect enrolment in National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) among people living with chronic disease(s) in Ghana. It also explores how NHIS enrolment explains the association between social capital and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) using empirical data from five regions in Ghana. Results indicate that bonding social capital was associated with HRQoL. Bridging and linking social capital were positively and negatively associated with enrolment in NHIS, respectively. Enrolment in the NHIS explained the relationships of trust in neighbours, bridging and linking social capital with HRQoL. Thus, while social capital can improve HRQoL of people living with chronic disease(s), it does so by, among others, influencing their participation in formal health protective services. Culturally driven informal welfare resources are critical to making formal programmes meaningful to people.
Adopting a healthy dietary pattern may be an initial step in combating inflammation-related chronic diseases; however, a comprehensive synthesis evaluating current evidence is lacking. This umbrella review aimed to summarise the current evidence on the effects of dietary patterns on circulating C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in adults. We conducted an exhaustive search of the Pubmed, Scopus and Epistemonikos databases, spanning from their inception to November 2023, to identify systematic reviews and meta-analyses across all study designs. Subsequently, we employed a random-effects model to recompute the pooled mean difference. Methodological quality was assessed using the A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews 2 (AMSTAR 2) checklist, and evidence certainty was categorised as non-significant, weak, suggestive, highly suggestive or convincing (PROSPERO: CRD42023484917). We included twenty-seven articles with thirty meta-analyses of seven dietary patterns, fifteen of which (50 %) exhibited high methodological quality. The summary effects of randomised controlled trials (RCT) found that the Mediterranean diet was the most effective in reducing circulating CRP levels, followed by Vegetarian/Vegan and Energy-restricted diets, though the evidence was of weak quality. In contrast, Intermittent Fasting, Ketogenic, Nordic and Paleolithic diets did not show an inverse correlation with circulating CRP levels. Some results from combined interventional and observational studies, as well as solely observational studies, also agreed with these findings. These dietary patterns show the potential in reducing CRP levels in adults, yet the lack of high-quality evidence suggests future studies may alter the summary estimates. Therefore, further well-conducted studies are warranted.
Aging is associated with increasing oxidative stress and declining antioxidant defences, making the body susceptible to various chronic conditions. Cruciferous vegetables contain glucoraphanin, which is metabolised into sulforaphane (SFN) in the gut(1). SFN activates a mechanism enhancing antioxidant defences that may contribute to a reduction in risk of age-related chronic diseases. Our hypothesis proposes that consuming cruciferous vegetables releases hepatic extracellular vesicles (EVs), which carry with a cargo of antioxidant proteins, into the systemic circulation(2) that are transported to ‘at risk’ tissues. We seek to characterise the antioxidant protein content of EVs from blood samples of healthy human volunteers from a prospective dietary intervention study trial called (GLOBE). The GLOBE study employs a randomised, single-blind, two-arm crossover design and involves 12 healthy male or female adults aged >55 years, at the time of enrolment, have a BMI in the range of 18.5-30 kg/m2, and have self-reported healthy (are not suffering from current illness like cancer, and gastrointestinal diseases including coeliac, Crohn’s, colitis, and irritable bowel syndrome) and not using any medications like antacids, laxatives and antibiotics which can interfere with normal digestive or metabolic processes. The dietary intervention consists of two commercially available treatments, one of which is a glucoraphanin-rich vegetable soup, while the other vegetable soup lacks glucoraphanin. Our initial focus lies in optimizing and standardizing a method for routinely characterizing EVs derived from healthy volunteers participating in dietary intervention studies. We specifically aim to extract EVs from a minimal plasma volume (2ml) using size exclusion chromatography (SEC). Subsequently, we intend to employ this method to analyse EVs obtained from 161 plasma samples collected from 12 participants during the GLOBE study for different time points like 0, 120, 240, 360, 480 min, 24 and 48 hr. Our goal is to gain insight into the role of EVs as part of the mechanisms by which consuming a moderate quantity of cruciferous vegetables may confer health benefits. Our research carries the potential to establish a standardised approach to the characterisation of EVs from healthy individuals which has several applications in nutrition research.
Research on the link between diet and multimorbidity is scarce, despite significant studies investigating the relationship between diet and individual chronic conditions. This study examines the association of dietary intake of macro- and micronutrients with multimorbidity in Cyprus's adult population. It was conducted as a cross-sectional study, with data collected using a standardised questionnaire between May 2018 and June 2019. The questionnaire included sociodemographic information, anthropometrics, medical history, dietary habits, sleep quality, smoking habits, and physical activity. The participants were selected using a stratified sampling method from adults residing in the five government-controlled municipalities of the Republic of Cyprus. The study included 1137 adults with a mean age of 40⋅8 years, of whom 26 % had multimorbidity. Individuals with multimorbidity consumed higher levels of sodium (P = 0⋅009) and vitamin A (P = 0⋅010) compared to those without multimorbidity. Additionally, higher fibre and sodium intake were also observed in individuals with at least one chronic disease of the circulatory system or endocrine system, compared to those with no chronic diseases in these systems (P < 0⋅05). Logistic regression models revealed that individuals with ≥2 chronic diseases compared to 0 or 1 chronic disease had higher fat intake (OR = 1⋅06, 95 % CI: 1⋅02, 1⋅10), higher iron intake (OR = 1⋅05, 95 % CI: 1⋅01, 1⋅09), lower mono-unsaturated fat intake (OR = 0⋅91, 95 % CI: 0⋅86, 0⋅96), and lower zinc intake (OR = 0⋅98, 95 % CI: 0⋅96, 0⋅99). Future research should replicate these results to further explore the intricate relationships between nutrient intake and multimorbidity. Our study's findings suggest that specific dietary components may contribute to preventing and managing multimorbidity.
The world remains off-track for the sustainable development goal (SDG) target 3.4, which calls for a one-third reduction in noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) mortality by 2030. This paper presents benefit–cost analyses of various NCD interventions in low-income (LICs) and lower–middle-income (LMCs) countries. We looked at 30 interventions recommended by the Disease Control Priorities Project, including six intersectoral policies (e.g., taxes) and 24 clinical services. We used a previously published model to estimate intervention costs and benefits through 2030, discounted at 8%. We focused on interventions with benefit–cost ratios (BCRs) > 15 and their contribution toward achieving the SDG target. We found that intersectoral policies often provided great value for money, with BCRs ranging from 40 (trans-fat bans) to 100 (tobacco excise taxes). However, seven clinical interventions (e.g., basic treatment of cardiovascular disease or breast cancer) also had BCRs > 15. The overall population impact of clinical interventions over the 2023–2030 period would be much higher than that of the intersectoral policies, which can take many years to reach their peak effects. Fully implementing the best-investment interventions would accelerate progress toward SDG 3.4 everywhere, but only one in 10 countries would achieve the target. This strategy would require an additional US$ 2.4 billion annually across all LICs and LMCs. We conclude that there are several cost-beneficial opportunities to tackle NCDs in LICs and LMCs. In countries with very limited resources, the best-investment interventions could begin to address the major NCD risk factors and build greater health system capacity, with benefits continuing to accrue beyond 2030.
There are no longitudinal studies investigating determinants of incident and persistent depressive symptoms in Southeast Asia.
Aims
To estimate the proportion and correlates of incident and persistent depressive symptoms in a prospective cohort study among middle-aged and older adults (≥45 years) in Thailand.
Method
We analysed longitudinal data from the Health, Aging, and Retirement in Thailand (HART) surveys in 2015 and 2017. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Logistic regression was used to calculate predictors of incident and persistent depressive symptoms.
Results
In total, 290 of 4528 participants without depressive symptoms in 2015 had incident depressive symptoms in 2017 (9.8%) and 76 of 640 adults had persistent depressive symptoms (in both 2015 and 2017) (18.3%). In adjusted logistic regression analysis, having diabetes (adjusted odds ratio AOR = 1.48, 95% CI 1.07–2.05), musculoskeletal conditions (AOR = 1.56, 95% CI 1.01–2.41) and having three or more chronic conditions (AOR = 2.55, 95% CI 1.67–3.90) were positively associated and higher subjective economic status (AOR = 0.47, 95% CI 0.31–0.72) and social participation (AOR = 0.66, 95% CI 0.49–0.90) were inversely associated with incident depressive symptoms. Having a cardiovascular disease (AOR = 1.55, 95% CI 1.01–2.39) and having three or more chronic conditions (AOR = 2.47, 95% CI 1.07–5.67) were positively associated and social participation (AOR = 0.48, 95% CI 0.26–0.87) was inversely associated with persistent depressive symptoms.
Conclusions
One in ten middle-aged and older adults had incident depressive symptoms at 2-year follow-up. The prevalence of incident and/or persistent depression was higher in people with a lower subjective economic status, low social participation, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders, cardiovascular conditions and a higher number of chronic diseases.
This study aimed to identify patterns of anthropometric trajectories throughout life and to analyse their association with the occurrence of sarcopenia in people from the Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil). It is a cross-sectional study involving 9670 public servants, aged 38–79 years, who answered the call for new data collection and exams, conducted approximately 4 years after the study baseline (2012–2014). Data sequence analysis was used to identify patterns of anthropometric trajectory. A theoretical model was elaborated based on the directed acyclic graph (DAG) to select the variables of minimum adjustment in the analysis of the causal effect between trajectory and sarcopenia. Poisson regression with robust variance was adopted for data analysis. The patterns of change in the anthropometric trajectory were classified in stable weight (T1); change to normal weight (T2); change to excess weight (T3); weight fluctuation (T4) and change to low weight (T5). The prevalence of sarcopenia in men and women who changed the anthropometric path for the low weight was twice as large when compared to participants with a stable weight trajectory. A protective effect of the excess weight trajectory was observed for the occurrence of sarcopenia in them. The results pointed to the need for health policies that encourage the proper management of body components in order to prevent and control obesity, as well as to preserve the quantity and quality of skeletal muscle mass throughout life, especially in older adults.

Objectives
To describe the rationale and methods for a cluster-randomized trial (CRT) in primary care clinics (PCC) comparing a computer-assisted psychoeducational (CAPE) intervention to usual care (UC) for depressed patients with hypertension or diabetes.
Methods
Two-arm, single-blind CRT in Santiago, Chile. Eight PCC will be randomly assigned to the intervention or UC. A total of 360 depressed individuals aged 18 or older PHQ-9 scores ≥ 15 and hypertension or diabetes will be recruited. Patients with alcohol/substance abuse; current treatment for depression, bipolar disorder, or psychosis; illiteracy; severe impairment; and residents in long-term care facilities will be excluded. Patients in the intervention will receive eight CAPE sessions by trained therapists, structured telephone calls to track progress, and usual medical care for chronic diseases. Psychologists and psychiatrists will regularly supervise therapists. To ensure continuity of care, the PCC team will meet monthly with a research team member. Patients in UC will receive standard medical and depression treatment. Three, six, and twelve months after enrollment, outcomes will be assessed. The primary outcome will be a 50% reduction in baseline PHQ-9 scores at six months. Intention-to-treat analyses will be used.
Results
A previous, small-scale pilot study provided valuable insights for study design.
Conclusions
This study will provide first-hand evidence on the effectiveness of a CAPE for depressed patients with chronic diseases at PCC in a Latin American country.
This study aimed to determine the risk factors for chronic diseases and to identify the potential influencing mechanisms from the perspectives of lifestyle and dietary factors. The findings could provide updated and innovative evidence for the prevention and control of chronic diseases.
Design:
A cross-sectional study.
Setting:
Shanghai, China.
Participants:
1005 adults from Yangpu district of Shanghai participated in the study, and responded to questions on dietary habits, lifestyle and health status.
Results:
Residents suffering from chronic diseases accounted for about 34·99 % of the respondents. Logistic regression analysis showed that age, diet quality, amount of exercise and tea drinking were related to chronic diseases. Age > 60 and overeating (Diet Balance Index total score > 0) had negative additive interaction on the occurrence of chronic disease, while overexercise (Physical Activity Index > 17·1) and tea drinking had negative multiplicative interaction and negative additive interaction on the occurrence of chronic disease. Diet quality, physical activity and tea drinking were incomplete mediators of the relationship between types of medical insurance residents participating in and chronic diseases.
Conclusions:
The residents in Yangpu District of Shanghai have a high prevalence of chronic diseases. Strengthening access of residents to health education and interventions to prevent chronic diseases and cultivating healthy eating and exercise habits of residents are crucial. The nutritional environment of the elderly population should be considered, and the reimbursement level of different types of medical insurance should be designed reasonably to improve the accessibility of medical and health services and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
We aimed to identify the prevalence of affective and anxiety disorders across different rare disease and identify correlates of psychopathology. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis. We systematically searched Medline, PSYNDEX, PsycINFO for observational studies examining clinically diagnosed affective and/or anxiety disorders in adults with rare chronic diseases. Two researchers reviewed titles and abstracts independently and, for eligible studies, independently extracted data. The prevalence rates were pooled using a random intercept logistic regression model. We published a review protocol (http://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/display_record.php?ID=CRD42018106614CRD42018106614). We identified and screened 34 402 records for eligibility and considered 39 studies in the qualitative and 37 studies in the quantitative analysis, including N = 5951 patients with 24 different rare diseases. Heterogeneity between studies was large. Prevalence rates ranged widely between studies, with pooled prevalence estimates of 13.1% (95% CI 9.6–17.7%; I2 = 87%, p < 0.001) for current and 39.3% (95% CI 31.7–47.4%; I2 = 84%, p < 0.001) for lifetime major depressive disorder, 21.2% (95% CI 15.4–28.6%; I2 = 90%, p < 0.001) for current and 46.1% (95% CI 35.8–56.8%; I2 = 90%, p < 0.001) for lifetime affective disorders, and 39.6% (95% CI 25.5–55.6%; I2 = 96%, p < 0.001) for current and 44.2% (95% CI 27.0–62.9%; I2 = 94%, p < 0.001) for lifetime anxiety disorders. Sensitivity analyses excluding studies of low quality revealed nearly the same results. We conducted the first systematic review examining affective and anxiety disorders in adults with different rare diseases and found high prevalence rates. Supporting patients in disease adjustment can be crucial for their overall health and well-being.
Severe mental disorders (SMD) are associated with higher morbidity rates and poorer health outcomes compared to the general population. They are more likely to be overweight, to be affected by cardiovascular diseases, and to have higher risk factors for chronic diseases.
Objectives
To assess physical health in a sample of patients with SMD and to investigate which mental health-related factors and other psychosocial outcomes could be considered predictors of poor physical health.
Methods
Patients referring to the psychiatric outpatients unit of the University of Campania “L. Vanvitelli” were recruited, and were assessed through validated assessment instruments exploring psychopathological status, global functioning and stigma. Physical health was assessed with an ad-hoc anthropometric schedule. A blood sample has been collected to assess levels of cholesterol, blood glucose, triglycerides, and blood insulin.
Results
75 patients have been recruited, with a mean age of 45.63±11.84 years. 30% of the sample had a diagnosis of psychosis, 27% of depression and 43% of bipolar disorder. A higher BMI is predicted by higher number of hospitalizations, a reduced score at MANSA (p<.000), and PSP (p<.05), and higher score at ISMI and BPRS (p<.05). A higher cardiovascular risk is predicted by a reduced MANSA score (p<.000), a higher ISMI score and a poorer adherence to pharmacological treatments (p<.05). Higher ISMI score (p<.0001) and number of hospitalizations (p<.05) are predictors of insulin-resistance.
Conclusions
Our study shows that psychosocial domains negatively influence physical health outcome. It is necessary to disseminate an integrated psychosocial intervention in order to improve patients’ physical health.
To analyze scientific literature on the development and implementation of the Chronic Care Model (CCM) in treating chronic diseases in the Italy context. Besides, to evaluate the effects of the activities carried out by the operators participating in the CCM on clinical care.
Background:
Italy is the second country globally for longevity, with 21.4% of citizens over 65 and 6.4% over 80. The CCM fits into this context, a care model aimed primarily at patients suffering from chronic diseases, especially in emergencies, as the recent COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods:
PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cinahl, and Cochrane Library scientific databases were consulted, and the records selected as relevant by title and abstract by nine independent scholars, and disagreements were resolved through discussion. Finally, the studies included in this review were selected based on the eligibility criteria.
Results:
Twenty potentially relevant studies were selected, and after applying the eligibility criteria and screening by the Critical Appraisal Skills Program tool, eight included in this review. The studies showed the effectiveness of CCM for managing patients with heart failure in primary care settings and significant improvements in clinical outcomes, the reduction of inappropriate emergency room access for chronic patients, and the improvement of patients’ overall health with diabetes. The CCM organizational model is effective in improving the management of metabolic control and the main cardiovascular risk factors. Furthermore, this modality also allows doctors to dedicate more space to patients in the disease’s acute phase.
Conclusion:
The CCM, with its fundamental pillars of empowering self-management of care, could represent a valid alternative to health management. The managers of health services, especially territorial ones, could consider the CCM for the improvement of the treatments offered.
Dietary intake and tissue levels of carotenoids have been associated with a reduced risk of several chronic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, obesity, brain-related diseases and some types of cancer. However, intervention trials with isolated carotenoid supplements have mostly failed to confirm the postulated health benefits. It has thereby been speculated that dosing, matrix and synergistic effects, as well as underlying health and the individual nutritional status plus genetic background do play a role. It appears that our knowledge on carotenoid-mediated health benefits may still be incomplete, as the underlying mechanisms of action are poorly understood in relation to human relevance. Antioxidant mechanisms – direct or via transcription factors such as NRF2 and NF-κB – and activation of nuclear hormone receptor pathways such as of RAR, RXR or also PPARs, via carotenoid metabolites, are the basic principles which we try to connect with carotenoid-transmitted health benefits as exemplified with described common diseases including obesity/diabetes and cancer. Depending on the targeted diseases, single or multiple mechanisms of actions may play a role. In this review and position paper, we try to highlight our present knowledge on carotenoid metabolism and mechanisms translatable into health benefits related to several chronic diseases.
Chronic diseases and preexisting conditions shape daily life for many archaeologists both in and out of the field. Chronic issues, however, can be overlooked in safety planning, which more often focuses on emergency situations because they are considered mundane, or they are imperceptible to project directors and crews until a serious problem arises. This article focuses on asthma, diabetes, and depression as common medical conditions that impact otherwise healthy archaeologists during fieldwork, with the goal of raising awareness of these conditions in particular, and the need to be more attentive to chronic diseases in general. Archaeological fieldwork presents novel situations that put those with chronic diseases and preexisting conditions at risk: environmental hazards, remoteness from medical and social resources and networks, lack of group awareness, and varying cultural norms. As a result, if chronic diseases are not attended to properly in the field, they can lead to life-threatening situations. Managing the risk presented by these conditions requires a group culture where team members are aware of issues, as appropriate, and collaborate to mitigate them during fieldwork. Descriptions of how chronic diseases affect archaeologists in the field are followed by “best practice” recommendations for self-management and for group leaders.
