A commercial bentonite (primarily smectite) from Fischer Scientific Company (F bentonite) and a natural bentonite from Peru (P bentonite) were used in the preparation of pillared clays with polyoxymetal cations of Al that were subsequently modified with Ce and La. Several Al/metal ratios (5 and 9) were used to investigate the effects on the thermal and hydrothermal stability of these synthetic clays. The structure of these materials was studied by X-ray diffraction. Isotherms were determined by N2 adsorption. Thermal stability was determined using thermogravimetric (TG) measurements and ara-monia-TPD (temperature programmed desorption) was used to obtain acidity data. These materials exhibited basal spacings from 16 to 20 Å, with surface areas from 239 to 347 m2g−1, with microporosity contributing from 50 to 80% of the total surface area. Pillared clays prepared from F bentonite generally showed larger basal spacings and surface areas than those prepared from P bentonite. Pillared clays modified with Ce or La did not show any apparent structural changes relative to the Al-pillared clays. Pillared clays modified with Ce and La had similar acid properties as Al-pillared clays. In contrast, the thermal and hydrothermal stabilities of these materials were greater than Al-pillared clays. However, Ce-pillared clay appears to be more effective than La-pillared clay in delaying the dehydroxylation of pillared clays with increasing temperature. The intercalation of Ce and La into Al-pillared clays improved the thermal stability, which may increase the utility of these materials as catalysts.

Cerium-doped lanthanum magnesium bulk aluminate (La1–xCexMgAl11O19, x = 0.03–0.50; abbreviated as LMA) was prepared via the Pechini sol–gel method after heating at 1200 °C for 2 h. The resulting single-phase ceramics was studied in terms of its structure using X-ray diffraction and optical properties using photoluminescence, its decay time, and radioluminescence spectroscopy. The diffraction and electron microscopy demonstrated LMA's plate-shaped nanocrystals with structure anisotropy and relatively broad particle size distribution. The optical measurements fully manifested the complexity of the LMA crystal structure. The radioluminescence study of cerium-doped LMA is here presented for the first time and, thus, contributes to the basic knowledge of Ce-doped materials. Additionally, the magnetic susceptibility exhibiting paramagnetic behavior of Ce3+ ions is presented. The magnetic data were interpreted in terms of local atomic Hamiltonian involving the crystal field and the Zeeman effect applied on the ground state J = 5/2 multiplet.

Here, we develop and characterize high thermal conductivity/high thermal shock-resistant bulk Ce-doped Al2O3 and propose it as a new phosphor converting capping layer for high-powered/high-brightness solid-state white lighting (SSWL). The bulk, dense Ce:Al2O3 ceramics have a 0.5 at.% Ce:Al concentration (significantly higher than the equilibrium solubility limit) and were produced using a simultaneous solid-state reactive current activated pressure-assisted densification (CAPAD) approach. Ce:Al2O3 exhibits a broadband emission from 400 to 600 nm, which encompasses the entire blue and green portions of the visible spectrum when pumped with ultraviolet (UV) light that is now commercially available in UV light–emitting devices and laser diodes (LD). These broadband phosphors can be used in the commonly used scheme of mixing with other UV-converting capping layers that emit red light to produce white light. Alternatively, they can be used in a novel composite down-converter approach that ensures improved thermal–mechanical properties of the converting phosphor capping layer. In this configuration, Ce:Al2O3 is used with proven phosphor conversion materials such as Ce:YAG as an active encapsulant or as a capping layer to produce SSWL with an improved bandwidth in the blue portion of the visible spectrum. To study the effect of crystallinity on the Ce photoluminescent (PL) emission, we synthesize Ce:YAG ceramics using high-pressure CAPAD at moderate temperatures to obtain varying crystallinity (amorphous through fully crystalline). We investigate the PL characteristics of Ce:Al2O3 and Ce:YAG from 295 to 4 K, revealing unique crystal field effects from the matrix on the Ce dopants. The unique PL properties in conjunction with the superior thermal–mechanical properties of Ce:Al2O3 can be used in high-powered/high-brightness–integrated devices based on high-efficiency UV-LD that do not suffer efficiency droop at high drive currents to pump the solid-state capping phosphors.

Nuclear fuel debris generated at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant during the loss of coolant accident in 2011, still resides within the reactor units, constantly cooled by water. Until it is retrieved, the fuel debris will corrode, releasing radioactive elements into the coolant water and the ground surrounding the reactors. To predict the corrosion behaviour of these materials, and to establish parameters for experiments with U-containing and real fuel debris, the corrosion of two surrogate fuel debris materials, with a composition of Ce(1-x)ZrxO2 (x = 0.2 and 0.4), was investigated. Materials were synthesised by a wet chemistry route and pellets were sintered at 1700°C in air atmosphere. Due to the slow corrosion kinetics, aggressive conditions were applied, and corrosion experiments were performed in 9 mol.L-1 HNO3 under static conditions. The incorporation of Zr into the structure of Ce reduced the normalised dissolution rate; from (3.75 ± 0.15) × 10-6 g.m-2.d-1 to (4.96 ± 0.28) × 10-6 g.m-2.d-1 for RL(Ce) of Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 and Ce0.6Zr0.4O2, respectively.

This article reports on the growth kinetics of cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles prepared via a sintering method. By varying the sintering temperatures and periods of time, particle size of CeO2 nanoparticles was tuned from 11 to 100 nm. Ostwald ripening mechanism prevails in the growth process, and the growth kinetics is determined to follow an equation, D5 = 16.25 + 3.6 × 1020 exp(−344.20/RT) in the temperature range of 700 to 1000°C. After dispersing Pt on CeO2 nanoparticles, the size effect for the catalytic performance of the CO oxidation reaction was researched. When temperature and period of time are set at 700 °C and 2 h, respectively, dispersion of Pt onto CeO2 nanoparticles led to the largest quantity of chemisorbed oxygen species on the surface and the best catalytic performance. The findings reported here would provide a feasible path for the preparation of advanced catalysts in the future and moreover to discover novel size-dependent supports for many catalytic applications.

Low-density austenitic Fe-Mn-Al-C steels have high strength, high ductility and a significant weight reduction respect to other alloyed steels. However, this complex system exhibits second-phase precipitation, particularly κ-carbide. It is well-known that the microalloying elements addition to steel generates precipitation hardening, as well as grain refinement effect. It is worth noting that low-density steels can cause cracking during hot-rolling due to high Mn, Al and C contents and segregation in grain boundaries. Hot-rolling conditions play an important role in the dynamic recrystallization mechanisms, and therefore in the austenitic grain size. The main objective of this research work is the metallographic, structural and mechanical characterization of low-density steels microalloyed with Ti/B and Ce/La in hot-rolling condition. For this purpose Fe-(27-30)Mn-(7-8)Al-(1.2-1.8)C (wt.%) low density steels microalloyed with Ti/B and Ce/La were hot-rolled at 1200 °C in two stages. Metallographic, structural and mechanical characterization was carried out by optical (LOM) and scanning electron (SEM) microscopies, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) through quality images, inverse pole figures (IPF) and orientation distribution functions (ODF) maps, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and microhardness Vickers (HV) testing. In general, the first stage of hot-rolling exhibits a strongly bimodal microstructure of dynamically recrystallized austenitic grains, while the second stage shows more uniform recrystallized grain size. In the first stage of hot-rolling the austenite is the predominant phase, while in the second stage the α-ferrite phase is barely visible. Low-density steel microalloyed with Ti/B presented better grain size and microhardness values compared to steel microalloyed with Ce/La. Preferred crystallographic orientations were not found.

AZ31 magnesium alloy sheets were A-TIG-welded through a coating of flux, which contained different ratios of Ce powder and nano-sized SiC as reinforcement particles and equal mass of TiO2 as activating fluxes. The microscopic analysis results illustrated that relatively low content of Ce in the reinforcement particles caused the formation of Al3Ce precipitates and refined the grains of α-Mg phase together with β-Mg17Al12 and SiC particles. The increase in microhardness and ultimate tensile strength of the joints was 6.2% and 19.2%, respectively, when reinforcement particles contain 20 wt% Ce compared to the joints coated without Ce. By studying the electrochemical test results, when using 20 wt% Ce + 80 wt% SiC as reinforcement particles, the corrosion current density was the lowest and the corrosion resistance reached the largest value, reflecting the improvement of corrosion property of the joint affected by Ce element.

Novel cerium-loaded MnTiOx/attapulgite (Ce/MnTiOx/ATP) and cerium-doped MnTiOx/attapulgite (Ce–MnTiOx/ATP) catalysts for low-temperature selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) with ammonia (NH3-SCR) were synthesized by co-precipitation methods. The results of catalytic activity testing for the as-prepared Ce–MnTiOx/ATP and Ce/MnTiOx/ATP indicated that the Ce–MnTiOx/ATP catalyst exhibited better catalytic performance with over 80% NOx conversion within a wide temperature window between 170 and 350°, and the highest NOx conversion attained for the Ce–MnTiOx/ATP catalyst was 97.5%. A series of characterization illustrated that the Ce–MnTiOx/ATP catalyst exhibited a higher specific surface area, oxygen vacancy, redox ability, and acid site as compared to that of the Ce/MnTiOx/ATP catalyst. The performance tests showed that the Ce–MnTiOx/ATP catalyst exhibited not only better SO2 & H2O resistance but also higher N2 selectivity and good stability. Therefore, the Ce–MnTiOx/ATP catalyst was testified to be a promising catalyst for NH3-SCR.

To free ourselves from the use of fossil fuels that are highly polluting, life-threatening and not easily regenerated, new technologies are being developed to obtain alternative energy sources more efficiently. Among these technologies, there is the option to improve the performance of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) to make them highly energy efficient. Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) have attracted much attention because they are environmentally benign, sustainable, generate low emissions and have relative low cost. However, conventional SOFCs with yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte require high operating temperatures (800-1000°C), which often lead to material degradation problems. Given that the greatest disadvantage of SOFCs is their high operating temperature, samples of CeO2 were synthesized by spray pyrolysis method and doped with Sm2O3 and Eu2O3 to improve the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte so that it can operate at lower temperatures without losing its efficiency. The samples were analyzed using SEM, EDS, TEM. Further research will be made by small angle DRX, AFM, EIS and a prototype will be built to test the working temperature of the electrolyte.

Recently, low-density steels have received increased attention as promising alternatives for automotive applications of the next generation of Advanced High-Strength Steels (AHSS), considering that vehicle´s weight decrease has been the subject of intense interest. It is well-known that the addition of rare earth metals (REM) has a remarkable effect on shape control and the modification of inclusions. Also, REM additions affect the grain size refinement as well as the tendency to form oxides and sulfides. The aim of this research work was to determine the effect of REM (Ce, La) addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the Fe-30Mn-8Al-1.8C low-density steel in as-cast condition. In order to clarify the REM effect on the Fe-Mn-Al-C system, non-microalloyed (LD-NM) and REM microalloyed (LD-REM) specimens were examined in detail by means of light optical and scanning electron microscopy for microstructural characterization. In the same way, the primary and secondary phases founded in the studied steels were identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Meanwhile, in order to evaluate the mechanical properties, ten microhardness measurements were carried out on the overall bulk by the Vickers hardness testing. In general, the results showed a dendritic refinement effect due to the addition of REM to low-density steel. REM acted as effective inoculants agents which reduced the primary and secondary arm spacing. Also, the strong segregation tendency at the grain boundaries in the liquid phase was limited. XRD profiles revealed the presence of austenite, ferrite, κ and DO3 phases. Low density steel microalloyed with REM showed a moderate increase in hardness compared to the non-microalloyed steel in the as-cast condition.

Nanosized CeO2-CuO (CeCu, 2:1) and CeO2-CoO (CeCo, 2:1) were synthesized by co-precipitation from nitrate precursors using 25% ammonia solution (NH4OH) as the precipitating agent. The catalysts were calcined in air at 800°C for 4h to evaluate the thermal stability. Powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) techniques were used for catalyst characterization. A Thermo Gravimetric/Differential Thermal Analyzer (TG/DTA) was used to determine the catalytic efficiency and soot oxidation activity. Ce-composite nanoparticles heightens the redox properties of the catalyst relative to undoped ceria. The Ce-composite samples exhibited excellent soot catalytic combustion performance by decreasing activation energy of soot oxidation.

In the present work, the evolution of microstructure and mechanical properties of high-strength low-alloy D6AC steel containing the Ce element was synthetically investigated by means of electron backscatter diffraction, scanning electron microscope, Transmission electron microscope, and tensile and impact tests. The experimental results show that adding a certain amount of Ce into HSLA-D6AC steel can refine grains and martensite laths, as well as increase the fine VC precipitates, which not only enhance the strength of the steel but also improve the toughness and plasticity. Meanwhile, the morphology of martensite in HSLA-D6AC steel changes from twin martensite to dislocation martensite. It is found that after adding Ce, HSLA-D6AC steel exhibits a distinct necking stage in the tensile test, and the impact toughness value increases from 83 to 136 J. With the appearance of some more and deeper homogeneous dimples, the quasi-cleavage fracture transforms into a ductile fracture characterized by microvoid coalescence, demonstrating that HSLA-D6AC steel with the Ce element achieves excellent comprehensive mechanical properties.

Agricultural soils are among the depositories of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs). Soil exposure to ENMs occurs through the intentional use of nano-agrochemicals, as well as through incidental contamination from industrial-waste release, irrigation with wastewater or gray water, amendment with ENMs-loaded sludge (soil conditioning to stimulate plant growth), or atmospheric fallouts. Concerns about ENM interactions with plants raise two questions. (1) Are ENMs taken up from soil by plants? (2) If they are taken up, do they remain in the nanoform within plant tissues? Experiments with crop plants have demonstrated that some ENMs such as TiO2 are taken up by roots and translocated to aboveground tissues, including fruits, without biotransformation. CeO2 ENM is also taken up by the roots; however, although most of it remains as ENM, it releases cerium ions that are incorporated into organic compounds. CeO2 ENM has been shown to be translocated from roots to seeds in soybean grown in soil amended with such ENM. On the other hand, ZnO ENM is transformed at the soil/root interface, leading to tissue Zn enrichment. Overall, most ENMs are taken up by plants with either low or no transformation, and accumulate in tissues.

Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine aim to achieve functional restoration of tissue or cells damaged through disease, aging, or trauma. Advancement of tissue engineering requires innovation in the field of three-dimensional scaffolding and functionalization with bioactive molecules. Nanotechnology offers advanced materials with patterned nano-morphologies for cell growth and different molecular substrates that can support cell survival and functions. Cerium oxide nanoparticles (nanoceria) can control intracellular as well as extracellular reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. Recent findings suggest that nanoceria can enhance long-term cell survival, enable cell migration and proliferation, and promote stem cell differentiation. Moreover, the self-regenerative property of nanoceria permits a small dose to remain catalytically active for an extended time. This review summarizes the possibilities and applications of nanoceria in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Mn-doped CeO2 electrolytes formulated as Ce1-xMnxO2-x (0.05 ≤ x ≤ 0.25) were prepared via soft chemical technique which involved co-precipitation of Mn2+ and Ce4+ using oxalic acid as the precipitant. The optimized pH for a stable incorporation of Mn dopant into ceria was found to be pH = 10. The solubility limit of MnO in the CeO2 fluorite lattice structure was suggested to be x = 0.20. The phase composition, morphology properties and elemental analysis of the oxalate and derived-powder was characterized using X-ray diffraction, SEM and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) respectively. The electrical conductivity of sintered samples of Mn-doped CeO2 ceramics were investigated in air using AC impedance spectroscopy. The bulk conductivities of the Mn-doped CeO2 ceramics sintered at 1200 °C at a test temperature of 800 °C were determined to be 4.223 x 10-4 ohm-1 cm-1 for Mn content x = 0.10 with activation energy, Ea = 0.88 eV.

This is a preliminary report of a neutron scattering experiment used to investigate 4f electron behavior in Ce.

Ce0.35Zr0.65−xRExO2 (RE = Y and La; x = 0 and 0.10) and Ce0.35Zr0.50Y0.075La0.075O2 were prepared by a coprecipitation method. The textures, structures, oxygen storage capacity (OSC), and redox properties of all samples were investigated using Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area characterization, x-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, temperature-programmed technique, and oxygen pulse reaction. The results showed that the fresh Ce0.35Zr0.65O2 has cubic phase, 434 μmol/g of OSC, 82 m2/g of surface area, and good redox properties; after aging at 1000 °C, Ce0.35Zr0.65O2 still has cubic phase, 418 μmol/g of OSC, and 50 m2/g of surface area; when Y3+ or La3+ is added to CeO2–ZrO2, the aged Ce0.35Zr0.65−xRExO2 (RE = Y and La; x = 0 and 0.10) still remains cubic phase, high OSC, and large surface area (47 m2/g); when Y3+ and La3+ are simultaneously added into CeO2–ZrO2, a stable solid solution with cubic phase is formed and has 459 μmol/g of OSC; and the aged Ce0.35Zr0.50Y0.075La0.075O2 reaches to 60 m2/g of surface area and has 390 μmol/g of OSC.

The well-known high irradiation resistance of fluorite-structured oxides is examined on the nanoscale by focused electron beam irradiation of ceria nanoparticles. It is found that ceria is amongst the nanomaterials most resistant to electron beam perforation with mainly swelling and amorphisation damage observed, along with grain reorientation effects. A comparison to reference nano-materials, shows that cubic zirconia behaves similarly resistant but that ultra-fine holes can be drilled, unlike for ceria, while SiC on the other hand can be perforated easily. Ablation of carbon films around electron beam impact zones is found accelerated in ceria, as compared to SiC, and discussed as a potential catalytic effect.

We have investigated the atomistic structure of radiation-induced defects in CeO2 formed under 200 keV electron irradiation. Dislocation loops on {111} habit planes are observed, and they grow accompanying strong strain-field. Atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) observations with high angle annular dark-field (HAADF) and annular bright-field (ABF) imaging techniques showed that no additional Ce layers are inserted at the position of the dislocation loop, and that strong distortion and expansion is induced around the dislocation loops. These results are discussed that dislocation loops formed under electron irradiation are non-stoichiometric defects consist of oxygen interstitials.

Bismuth-Antimony alloys have been shown to have high ZT values below room temperature, especially for single crystals. For polycrystalline samples, impurity doping and magnetic field have proven to be powerful tools in the search for understanding and improving thermoelectric performance. Nanopolycrystalline Bi0.88Sb0.12 doped with 0.05, 0.5 and 3 % Ce were prepared by ball milling and dc hot pressing techniques. Electrical resistivity, Seebeck coefficient, thermal conductivity, carrier concentration, mobility, and magnetization are measured in a temperature range of 5-350 K and in magnetic fields up to 9 Tesla. The effects of Ce doping on the thermoelectric properties of Bi0.88Sb0.12 in zero magnetic field are discussed.
