Using probabilistic tools, we prove that any weak* continuous semigroup $(T_t)_{t \geqslant 0}$ of self-adjoint unital completely positive measurable Schur multipliers acting on the space $\mathrm {B}({\mathrm {L}}^2(X))$ of bounded operators on the Hilbert space ${\mathrm {L}}^2(X)$, where X is a suitable measure space, can be dilated by a weak* continuous group of Markov $*$-automorphisms on a bigger von Neumann algebra. We also construct a Markov dilation of these semigroups. Our results imply the boundedness of the McIntosh’s ${\mathrm {H}}^\infty $ functional calculus of the generators of these semigroups on the associated Schatten spaces and some interpolation results connected to ${\mathrm {BMO}}$-spaces. We also give an answer to a question of Steen, Todorov, and Turowska on completely positive continuous Schur multipliers.

This work studies the asymptotic behavior of a waves coupled system with a boundary dissipation of the fractional derivative type. We prove well-posedness and polynomial stability based on the semigroup approach, the energy method, and the result of stability.

We define positively expansive semigroups of linear operators on Banach spaces. We characterize these semigroups in terms of the point spectrum of the infinitesimal generator. In particular, we prove that a positively expansive semigroup is neither uniformly bounded nor equicontinuous. We apply our results to the Lasota equation.

We examine a semigroup analogue of the Kumjian–Renault representation of C*-algebras with Cartan subalgebras on twisted groupoids. Specifically, we represent semigroups with distinguished normal subsemigroups as ‘slice-sections’ of groupoid bundles.

The goal of the paper is to obtain analogs of the sampling theorems and of the Riesz–Boas interpolation formulas which are relevant to the discrete Hilbert and Kak–Hilbert transforms in $l^{2}$ .

We prove the existence and asymptotic behaviour of the transition density for a large class of subordinators whose Laplace exponents satisfy lower scaling condition at infinity. Furthermore, we present lower and upper bounds for the density. Sharp estimates are provided if an additional upper scaling condition on the Laplace exponent is imposed. In particular, we cover the case when the (minus) second derivative of the Laplace exponent is a function regularly varying at infinity with regularity index bigger than $-2$ .

We construct two bounded functional calculi for sectorial operators on Banach spaces, which enhance the functional calculus for analytic Besov functions, by extending the class of functions, generalising and sharpening estimates and adapting the calculus to the angle of sectoriality. The calculi are based on appropriate reproducing formulas, they are compatible with standard functional calculi and they admit appropriate convergence lemmas and spectral mapping theorems. To achieve this, we develop the theory of associated function spaces in ways that are interesting and significant. As consequences of our calculi, we derive several well-known operator norm estimates and provide generalisations of some of them.

We establish a Wold-type decomposition for isometric and isometric Nica-covariant representations of the odometer semigroup. These generalize the Wold-type decomposition for commuting pairs of isometries due to Popovici and for pairs of doubly commuting isometries due to Słociński.

We study the asymptotic behaviour of the powers of a composition operator on various Banach spaces of holomorphic functions on the disc, namely, standard weighted Bergman spaces (finite and infinite order), Bloch space, little Bloch space, Bloch-type space and Dirichlet space. Moreover, we give a complete characterization of those composition operators that are similar to an isometry on these various Banach spaces. We conclude by studying the asymptotic behaviour of semigroups of composition operators on these various Banach spaces.

Uniformization transforms a pseudo-Poisson process with unequal intensities (leaving rates) into one with uniform intensity. Self-transitions is the price to pay. Two intensities arise when one considers an absorbing barrier of a Markov process as a body in its own right: a pair of Markov processes intertwined by an extended Chapman–Kolmogorov equation naturally arises. We show that Sauer's two-state space empathy theory handles such intertwined processes. The price of self-transitions is also avoided.

A commuting family of subnormal operators need not have a commuting normal extension. We study when a representation of an abelian semigroup can be extended to a normal representation, and show that it suffices to extend the set of generators to commuting normals. We also extend a result due to Athavale to representations on abelian lattice ordered semigroups.

We consider first-order hyperbolic systems on an interval with dynamic boundary conditions. These systems occur when the ordinary differential equation dynamics on the boundary interact with the waves in the interior. The well-posedness for linear systems is established using an abstract Friedrichs theorem. Due to the limited regularity of the coefficients, we need to introduce the appropriate space of test functions for the weak formulation. It is shown that the weak solutions exhibit a hidden regularity at the boundary as well as at interior points. As a consequence, the dynamics of the boundary components satisfy an additional regularity. Neither result can be achieved from standard semigroup methods. Nevertheless, we show that our weak solutions and the semigroup solutions coincide. For illustration, we give three particular physical examples that fit into our framework.

We show Exel’s tight representation of an inverse semigroup can be described in terms of joins and covers in the natural partial order. Using this, we show that the ${C}^{\ast } $-algebra of a finitely aligned category of paths, developed by Spielberg, is the tight ${C}^{\ast } $-algebra of a natural inverse semigroup. This includes as a special case finitely aligned higher-rank graphs: that is, for such a higher-rank graph $\Lambda $, the tight ${C}^{\ast } $-algebra of the inverse semigroup associated to $\Lambda $ is the same as the ${C}^{\ast } $-algebra of $\Lambda $.

In this article we study the Cesàro operator

$$C\left( f \right)\left( Z \right)=\frac{1}{Z}\int_{0}^{Z}{f\left( \zeta \right)d}\zeta,$$

and its companion operator $\mathcal{T}$ on Hardy spaces of the upper half plane. We identify $\mathcal{C}$ and $\mathcal{T}$ as resolvents for appropriate semigroups of composition operators and we find the norm and the spectrum in each case. The relation of $\mathcal{C}$ and $\mathcal{T}$ with the corresponding Cesàro operators on Lebesgue spaces ${{L}^{p}}\left( \mathbb{R} \right)$ of the boundary line is also discussed.

The purpose of this paper is to show the existence of a generalized solution of the photon transport problem. By means of the theory of equicontinuous ${{C}_{0}}$-semigroup on a sequentially complete locally convex topological vector space we show that the perturbed abstract Cauchy problem has a unique solution when the perturbation operator and the forcing term function satisfy certain conditions. A consequence of the abstract result is that it can be directly applied to obtain a generalized solution of the photon transport problem.

Let $T$ be a sectorial operator. It is known that the existence of a bounded (suitably scaled) ${{H}^{\infty }}$ calculus for $T$, on every sector containing the positive half-line, is equivalent to the existence of a bounded functional calculus on the Besov algebra $\Lambda _{\infty ,1}^{\alpha }({{\mathbb{R}}^{+}})$. Such an algebra includes functions defined byMikhlin-type conditions and so the Besov calculus can be seen as a result on multipliers for $T$. In this paper, we use fractional derivation to analyse in detail the relationship between $\Lambda _{\infty ,1}^{\alpha }$ and Banach algebras of Mikhlin-type. As a result, we obtain a new version of the quoted equivalence.

We give a simplified proof of the complex inversion formula for semigroups and, more generally, solution families for scalar-type Volterra equations, including the stronger versions on unconditional martingale differences (UMD) spaces. Our approach is based on (elementary) Fourier analysis.

A regular semigroup (cf. [4, p. 38]) is a C0-semigroup T(⋅) that has an extension as a holomorphic semigroup W(⋅) in the right halfplane , such that ||W(⋅)|| is bounded in the ‘unit rectangle’ Q:=(0, 1]× [−1, 1]. The important basic facts about a regular semigroup T(⋅) are: (i) it possesses a boundary groupU(⋅), defined as the limit lims → 0+W(s+i⋅) in the strong operator topology; (ii) U(⋅) is a C0-group, whose generator is iA, where A denotes the generator of T(⋅); and (iii) W(s+it)=T(s)U(t) for all s+it ∈ (cf. Theorems 17.9.1 and 17.9.2 in [3]). The following converse theorem is proved here. Let A be the generator of a C0-semigroup T(⋅). If iA generates a C0-group, U(⋅), then T(⋅) is a regular semigroup, and its holomorphic extension is given by (iii). This result is related to (but not included in) known results of Engel (cf. Theorem II.4.6 in [2]), Liu [7] and the author [6] for holomorphic extensions into arbitrary sectors, of C0-semigroups that are bounded in every proper subsector. The method of proof is also different from the method used in these references. Criteria for generators of regular semigroups follow as easy corollaries.
