Let A be a rational function of one complex variable of degree at least two, and $z_0$ its repelling fixed point with the multiplier $\unicode{x3bb} .$ A Poincaré function associated with $z_0$ is a function meromorphic on ${\mathbb C}$ such that , and In this paper, we study the following problem: given Poincaré functions and , find out if there is an algebraic relation between them and, if such a relation exists, describe the corresponding algebraic curve $f(x,y)=0.$ We provide a solution, which can be viewed as a refinement of the classical theorem of Ritt about commuting rational functions. We also reprove and extend previous results concerning algebraic dependencies between Böttcher functions.

In this paper, we prove the continuity of iteration operators $\mathcal {J}_n$ on the space of all continuous self-maps of a locally compact Hausdorff space X and generally discuss dynamical behaviors of them. We characterize their fixed points and periodic points for $X=\mathbb {R}$ and the unit circle $S^1$. Then we indicate that all orbits of $\mathcal {J}_n$ are bounded; however, we prove that for $X=\mathbb {R}$ and $S^1$, every fixed point of $\mathcal {J}_n$ which is non-constant and equals the identity on its range is not Lyapunov stable. The boundedness and the instability exhibit the complexity of the system, but we show that the complicated behavior is not Devaney chaotic. We give a sufficient condition to classify the systems generated by iteration operators up to topological conjugacy.

As a weak version of embedding flow, the problem of iterative roots is studied extensively in one dimension, especially in monotone case. There are few results in high dimensions because the constructive method dealing with monotone mappings is unavailable. In this paper, by introducing a kind of partial order, we define the monotonicity for two-dimensional mappings and then present some results on the existence of iterative roots for linear mappings, triangle-type mappings, and co-triangle-type mappings, respectively. Our theorems show that even the property of monotonicity for iterative roots of monotone mappings, which is a trivial result in one dimension, does not hold anymore in high dimensions. At the end of this paper, the problem of iterative roots for two well-known planar mappings, that is, Hénon mappings and coupled logistic mappings, are also discussed.

An iterative square root of a self-map f is a self-map g such that $g(g(\cdot ))=f(\cdot )$ . We obtain new characterizations for detecting the non-existence of such square roots for self-maps on arbitrary sets. They are used to prove that continuous self-maps with no square roots are dense in the space of all continuous self-maps for various topological spaces. The spaces studied include those that are homeomorphic to the unit cube in ${\mathbb R}^{m}$ and to the whole of $\mathbb {R}^{m}$ for every positive integer $m.$ However, we also prove that every continuous self-map on a space homeomorphic to the unit cube in $\mathbb {R}^{m}$ with a fixed point on the boundary can be approximated by iterative squares of continuous self-maps.

Representations of the Cuntz algebra ${\mathcal{O}}_{N}$ are constructed from interval dynamical systems associated with slow continued fraction algorithms introduced by Giovanni Panti. Their irreducible decomposition formulas are characterized by using the modular group action on real numbers, as a generalization of results by Kawamura, Hayashi, and Lascu. Furthermore, a certain symmetry of such an interval dynamical system is interpreted as a covariant representation of the $C^{\ast }$-dynamical system of the “flip-flop” automorphism of ${\mathcal{O}}_{2}$.

The Jiles-Atherton (J-A) model is a commonly used physics-based model in describing the hysteresis characteristics of ferromagnetic materials. However, citations and interpretation of this model in literature have been non-uniform. Solution methods for solving numerically this model has not been studied adequately. In this paper, through analyzing the mathematical properties of equations and the physical mechanism of energy conservation, we point out some unreasonable descriptions of this model and develop a relatively more accurate, modified J-A model together with its numerical solution method. Our method employs a fixed point method to compute anhysteretic magnetization. We obtain the susceptibility value of the anhysteretic magnetization analytically and apply the 4th order Runge-Kutta method to the solution of total magnetization. Computational errors are estimated and then precisions of the solving method in describing various materials are verified. At last, through analyzing the effects of the accelerating method, iterative error and step size on the computational errors, we optimize the numerical method to achieve the effects of high precision and short computing time. From analysis, we determine the range of best values of some key parameters for fast and accurate computation.

where the function $\phi $ is in ${{L}_{p}}({{\mathbb{R}}^{s}})(1\,\le \,p\,\le \,\infty )$, $a$ is an infinitely supported sequence on ${{\mathbb{Z}}^{s}}$ called a refinement mask, and $M$ is an $s\,\times \,s$ integer matrix such that ${{\lim }_{n\to \infty }}\,{{M}^{-n}}\,=\,0$. Associated with the mask $a$ and $M$ is a linear operator ${{\text{Q}}_{a,M}}$ defined on ${{L}_{p}}({{\mathbb{R}}^{s}})$ by ${{\text{Q}}_{a,M}}{{\phi }_{0}}\,:=\,{{\sum }_{\alpha \in {{\mathbb{Z}}^{s}}}}\,a(\alpha ){{\phi }_{0}}(M\,\cdot \,-\alpha )$. Main results of this paper are related to the convergence rates of ${{(\text{Q}_{a,M}^{n}{{\phi }_{o}})}_{n=1,2,\ldots }}$ in ${{L}_{p}}({{\mathbb{R}}^{s}})$ with mask $a$ being infinitely supported. It is proved that under some appropriate conditions on the initial function ${{\phi }_{0}}$, $\text{Q}_{a,M}^{n}{{\phi }_{0}}$ converges in ${{L}_{p}}({{\mathbb{R}}^{s}})$ with an exponential rate.

A class of rational functions and sufficient conditions on it such that the Julia set is a Jordan arc, respectively no Jordan arc, are introduced. Further, it is shown that any rational function which has a Jordan arc as Julia set belongs up to Möbius conjugation to this class.

We consider the shift-invariant space, 𝕊(Φ), generated by a set Φ = {Φ1,..., Φr} of compactly supported distributions on R when the vector of distributions ϕ:= {Φ1,..., Φr} T satisfies a system of refinement equations expressed in matrix form as

where a is a finitely supported sequence of r x r matrices of complex numbers. Such multiple refinable functions occur naturally in the study of multiple wavelets.

The purpose of the present paper is to characterize the accuracy of Φ, the order of the polynomial space contained in 𝕊(Φ), strictly in terms of the refinement mask a. The accuracy determines the Lp-approximation order of 𝕊(Φ) when the functions in (Φ) belong to Lp(ℝ) (see Jia [10]). The characterization is achieved in terms of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the subdivision operator associated with the mask a. In particular, they extend and improve the results of Heil, Strang and Strela [7], and of Plonka [16]. In addition, a counterexample is given to the statement of Strang and Strela [20] that the eigenvalues of the subdivision operator determine the accuracy. The results do not require the linear independence of the shifts of Φ.
