We show how the modular representation theory of inner forms of general linear groups over a non-Archimedean local field can be brought to bear on the complex theory in a remarkable way. Let $\text{F}$ be a non-Archimedean locally compact field of residue characteristic $p$, and let $\text{G}$ be an inner form of the general linear group $\text{GL}_{n}(\text{F})$ for $n\geqslant 1$. We consider the problem of describing explicitly the local Jacquet–Langlands correspondence $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}\mapsto _{\text{JL}}\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$ between the complex discrete series representations of $\text{G}$ and $\text{GL}_{n}(\text{F})$, in terms of type theory. We show that the congruence properties of the local Jacquet–Langlands correspondence exhibited by A. Mínguez and the first author give information about the explicit description of this correspondence. We prove that the problem of the invariance of the endo-class by the Jacquet–Langlands correspondence can be reduced to the case where the representations $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$ and $_{\text{JL}}\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$ are both cuspidal with torsion number $1$. We also give an explicit description of the Jacquet–Langlands correspondence for all essentially tame discrete series representations of $\text{G}$, up to an unramified twist, in terms of admissible pairs, generalizing previous results by Bushnell and Henniart. In positive depth, our results are the first beyond the case where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$ and $_{\text{JL}}\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$ are both cuspidal.

In this paper, we introduce the Newton decomposition on a connected reductive $p$-adic group $G$. Based on it we give a nice decomposition of the cocenter of its Hecke algebra. Here we consider both the ordinary cocenter associated to the usual conjugation action on $G$ and the twisted cocenter arising from the theory of twisted endoscopy. We give Iwahori–Matsumoto type generators on the Newton components of the cocenter. Based on it, we prove a generalization of Howe’s conjecture on the restriction of (both ordinary and twisted) invariant distributions. Finally we give an explicit description of the structure of the rigid cocenter.

We present a new construction of the $p$ -adic local Langlands correspondence for $\operatorname{GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Q}_{p})$ via the patching method of Taylor–Wiles and Kisin. This construction sheds light on the relationship between the various other approaches to both the local and the global aspects of the $p$ -adic Langlands program; in particular, it gives a new proof of many cases of the second author’s local–global compatibility theorem and relaxes a hypothesis on the local mod  $p$ representation in that theorem.

Let $G\subseteq \widetilde{G}$ be two quasisplit connected reductive groups over a local field of characteristic zero and having the same derived group. Although the existence of L-packets is still conjectural in general, it is believed that the L-packets of $G$ should be the restriction of those of $\widetilde{G}$ . Motivated by this, we hope to construct the L-packets of $\widetilde{G}$ from those of $G$ . The primary example in our mind is when $G=\text{Sp}(2n)$ , whose L-packets have been determined by Arthur [The endoscopic classification of representations: orthogonal and symplectic groups, Colloquium Publications, vol. 61 (American Mathematical Society, Providence, RI, 2013)], and $\widetilde{G}=\text{GSp}(2n)$ . As a first step, we need to consider some well-known conjectural properties of L-packets. In this paper, we show how they can be deduced from the conjectural endoscopy theory. As an application, we obtain some structural information about L-packets of $\widetilde{G}$ from those of  $G$ .

We give a classification of irreducible admissible modulo $p$ representations of a split$p$-adic reductive group in terms of supersingular representations. This is a generalization of a theorem of Herzig.

Let V be a vector space over a p-adic field F, of finite dimension, let q be a non-degenerate quadratic form over V and let D be a non-isotropic line in V. Denote by W the hyperplane orthogonal to D, and by G and H the special orthogonal groups of V and W. Let π, respectively σ, be an irreducible admissible representation of G(F) , respectively H(F) . The representation σ appears as a quotient of the restriction of π to H(F)with a certain multiplicity m(π,σ) . We know that m(π,σ)≤1 . We assume that π is supercuspidal. Then we prove a formula that computes m(π,σ)as an integral of functions deduced from the characters of π and σ. Let Π, respectively Σ, be an L-packet of tempered irreducible representations of G(F) , respectively H(F) . Here we use the sophisticated notion of L-packet due to Vogan and we assume some usual conjectural properties of those packets. A weak form of the local Gross–Prasad conjecture says that there exists a unique pair (π,σ)∈Π×Σ such that m(π,σ)=1 . Assuming that the elements of Π are supercuspidal, we prove this assertion.

We show that the residue at s=0 of the standard intertwining operator attached to a supercuspidal representation π⊗χ of the Levi subgroup GL2(F)×E1 of the quasisplit group SO*6(F) defined by a quadratic extension E/F of p-adic fields is proportional to the pairing of the characters of these representations considered on the graph of the norm map of Kottwitz–Shelstad. Here π is self-dual, and the norm is simply that of Hilbert’s theorem 90. The pairing can be carried over to a pairing between the character on E1 and the character on E× defining the representation of GL2(F) when the central character of the representation is quadratic, but non-trivial, through the character identities of Labesse–Langlands. If the quadratic extension defining the representation on GL2(F) is different from E the residue is then zero. On the other hand when the central character is trivial the residue is never zero. The results agree completely with the theory of twisted endoscopy and L-functions and determines fully the reducibility of corresponding induced representations for all s.

Let G be a reductive p-adic group. Given a compact-mod-center maximal torus S⊂G and sufficiently regular character χ of S, one can define, following Adler, Yu and others, a supercuspidal representation π(S,χ) of G. For S unramified, we determine when π(S,χ) is generic, and which generic characters it contains.

Let F be a p-adic field. Consider a dual pair where SO(2n+1)+ is the split orthogonal group and is the metaplectic cover of the symplectic group Sp(2n) over F. We study lifting of characters between orthogonal and metaplectic groups. We say that a representation of SO(2n+1)+ lifts to a representation of if their characters on corresponding conjugacy classes are equal up to a transfer factor. We study properties of this transfer factor, which is essentially the character of the difference of the two halves of the oscillator representation. We show that the lifting commutes with parabolic induction. These results were motivated by the paper ‘Lifting of characters on orthogonal and metaplectic groups’ by Adams who considered the case F=ℝ.

This paper gives the classification of the Whittaker unitary dual for affine graded Hecke algebras of type E. By the Iwahori–Matsumoto involution, this is also equivalent to the classification of the spherical unitary dual for type E. Together with some results of Barbasch and Moy (D. Barbasch and A. Moy, Unitary spherical spectrum for p-adic classical groups, Acta Appl. Math. 44 (1996), 3–37; D. Barbasch, The spherical unitary spectrum of split classical real and p-adic groups, Preprint (2006), math/0609828) and Ciubotaru (D. Ciubotaru, The Iwahori spherical unitary dual of the split group of type F4, Represent. Theory 9 (2005), 94–137), this work completes the classification of the Whittaker Iwahori-spherical unitary dual or, equivalently, the spherical unitary dual of any split p-adic group.

In this paper, we present a conjecture on a relation between the Zelevinski involutions for reductive groups over a p-adic field and the conjectural A-packets. As evidence for this conjecture, we prove that the Zelevinski involutions, which are regarded as operators on the space of virtual characters, commute with the endoscopic transfers under the assumption of the fundamental lemma for groups and for Lie algebras.

We determine essentially completely the theta correspondence arising from the dual pair ${\it PGL}_3 \times G_2 \subset E_6$ over a p-adic field. Our first result determines the theta lift of any non-supercuspidal representation of PGL3 and shows that the lifting respects Langlands functoriality. Our second result shows that the theta lift $\theta(\pi)$ of a (non-self-dual) supercuspidal representation $\pi$ of PGL3 is an irreducible generic supercuspidal representation of G2; we also determine $\theta(\pi)$ explicitly when $\pi$ has depth zero.
