Using multigraded Castelnuovo–Mumford regularity, we study the equations defining a projective embedding of a variety $X$. Given globally generated line bundles $B_{1}, \dotsc, B_{\ell}$ on $X$ and $m_{1}, \dotsc, m_{\ell} \in \mathbb{N}$, consider the line bundle $L := B_{1}^{m_{1}} \otimes \dotsb \otimes B_{\ell}^{m_{\ell}}$. We give conditions on the $m_{i}$ which guarantee that the ideal of $X$ in $\mathbb{P}(H^{0}(X,L)^{*})$ is generated by quadrics and that the first $p$ syzygies are linear. This yields new results on the syzygies of toric varieties and the normality of polytopes.

The number of flags in a complete fan, or more generally in an Eulerian poset, is encoded in the cd-index. We prove the non-negativity of the cd-index for complete fans, regular CW-spheres and Gorenstein* posets.

We give a purely algebraic proof of the hypersurface case of the Toric Residue Mirror Conjecture recently proposed by Batyrev and Materov.

We introduce a new approach to the study of a system of algebraic equations in $(\mathbb{C}^\times)^n$ whose Newton polytopes have sufficiently general relative positions. Our method is based on the theory of Parshin's residues and tame symbols on toroidal varieties. It provides a uniform algebraic explanation of the recent result of Khovanskii on the product of the roots of such systems and the Gel'fond–Khovanskii result on the sum of the values of a Laurent polynomial over the roots of such systems, and extends them to the case of an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic.
