It is a classic result of Segerberg and Maksimova that a variety of $\mathsf {S4}$-algebras is locally finite iff it is of finite depth. Since the logic $\mathsf {MS4}$ (monadic $\mathsf {S4}$) axiomatizes the one-variable fragment of $\mathsf {QS4}$ (predicate $\mathsf {S4}$), it is natural to try to generalize the Segerberg–Maksimova theorem to this setting. We obtain several results in this direction. Our positive results include the identification of the largest semisimple variety of $\mathsf {MS4}$-algebras. We prove that the corresponding logic $\mathsf {MS4_S}$ has the finite model property. We show that both $\mathsf {S5}^2$ and $\mathsf {S4}_u$ are proper extensions of $\mathsf {MS4_S}$, and that a direct generalization of the Segerberg–Maksimova theorem holds for a family of varieties containing the variety of $\mathsf {S4}_u$-algebras. Our negative results include a translation of varieties of $\mathsf {S5}_2$-algebras into varieties of $\mathsf {MS4_S}$-algebras of depth 2, which preserves and reflects local finiteness. This, in particular, shows that the problem of characterizing locally finite varieties of $\mathsf {MS4}$-algebras (even of $\mathsf {MS4_S}$-algebras) is at least as hard as that of characterizing locally finite varieties of $\mathsf {S5}_2$-algebras—a problem that remains wide open.

We prove that the opposite of the category of coalgebras for the Vietoris endofunctor on the category of compact Hausdorff spaces is monadic over $\mathsf {Set}$. We deliver an analogous result for the upper, lower, and convex Vietoris endofunctors acting on the category of stably compact spaces. We provide axiomatizations of the associated (infinitary) varieties. This can be seen as a version of Jónsson–Tarski duality for modal algebras beyond the zero-dimensional setting.

We show that the universal minimal proximal flow and the universal minimal strongly proximal flow of a discrete group can be realized as the Stone spaces of translation-invariant Boolean algebras of subsets of the group satisfying a higher-order notion of syndeticity. We establish algebraic, combinatorial and topological dynamical characterizations of these subsets that we use to obtain new necessary and sufficient conditions for strong amenability and amenability. We also characterize dense orbit sets, answering a question of Glasner, Tsankov, Weiss and Zucker.

It is a classic result in modal logic, often referred to as Jónsson-Tarski duality, that the category of modal algebras is dually equivalent to the category of descriptive frames. The latter are Kripke frames equipped with a Stone topology such that the binary relation is continuous. This duality generalizes the celebrated Stone duality for boolean algebras. Our goal is to generalize descriptive frames so that the topology is an arbitrary compact Hausdorff topology. For this, instead of working with the boolean algebra of clopen subsets of a Stone space, we work with the ring of continuous real-valued functions on a compact Hausdorff space. The main novelty is to define a modal operator on such a ring utilizing a continuous relation on a compact Hausdorff space.

Our starting point is the well-known Gelfand duality between the category ${\sf KHaus}$ of compact Hausdorff spaces and the category $\boldsymbol {\mathit {uba}\ell }$ of uniformly complete bounded archimedean $\ell $ -algebras. We endow a bounded archimedean $\ell $ -algebra with a modal operator, which results in the category $\boldsymbol {\mathit {mba}\ell }$ of modal bounded archimedean $\ell $ -algebras. Our main result establishes a dual adjunction between $\boldsymbol {\mathit {mba}\ell }$ and the category ${\sf KHF}$ of what we call compact Hausdorff frames; that is, Kripke frames equipped with a compact Hausdorff topology such that the binary relation is continuous. This dual adjunction restricts to a dual equivalence between ${\sf KHF}$ and the reflective subcategory $\boldsymbol {\mathit {muba}\ell }$ of $\boldsymbol {\mathit {mba}\ell }$ consisting of uniformly complete objects of $\boldsymbol {\mathit {mba}\ell }$ . This generalizes both Gelfand duality and Jónsson-Tarski duality.

The purpose of this paper is to compare the notion of a Grzegorczyk point introduced in [19] (and thoroughly investigated in [3, 14, 16, 18]) to the standard notions of a filter in Boolean algebras and round filter in Boolean contact algebras. In particular, we compare Grzegorczyk points to filters and ultrafilters of atomic and atomless algebras. We also prove how a certain extra axiom influences topological spaces for Grzegorczyk contact algebras. Last but not least, we do not refrain from a philosophical interpretation of the results from the paper.

The standard topological representation of a Boolean algebra via the clopen sets of a Stone space requires a nonconstructive choice principle, equivalent to the Boolean Prime Ideal Theorem. In this article, we describe a choice-free topological representation of Boolean algebras. This representation uses a subclass of the spectral spaces that Stone used in his representation of distributive lattices via compact open sets. It also takes advantage of Tarski’s observation that the regular open sets of any topological space form a Boolean algebra. We prove without choice principles that any Boolean algebra arises from a special spectral space X via the compact regular open sets of X; these sets may also be described as those that are both compact open in X and regular open in the upset topology of the specialization order of X, allowing one to apply to an arbitrary Boolean algebra simple reasoning about regular opens of a separative poset. Our representation is therefore a mix of Stone and Tarski, with the two connected by Vietoris: the relevant spectral spaces also arise as the hyperspace of nonempty closed sets of a Stone space endowed with the upper Vietoris topology. This connection makes clear the relation between our point-set topological approach to choice-free Stone duality, which may be called the hyperspace approach, and a point-free approach to choice-free Stone duality using Stone locales. Unlike Stone’s representation of Boolean algebras via Stone spaces, our choice-free topological representation of Boolean algebras does not show that every Boolean algebra can be represented as a field of sets; but like Stone’s representation, it provides the benefit of a topological perspective on Boolean algebras, only now without choice. In addition to representation, we establish a choice-free dual equivalence between the category of Boolean algebras with Boolean homomorphisms and a subcategory of the category of spectral spaces with spectral maps. We show how this duality can be used to prove some basic facts about Boolean algebras.

Profinite algebras are exactly those that are isomorphic to inverse limits of finite algebras. Such algebras are naturally equipped with Boolean topologies. A variety ${\cal V}$ is standard if every Boolean topological algebra with the algebraic reduct in ${\cal V}$ is profinite.

We show that there is no algorithm which takes as input a finite algebra A of a finite type and decide whether the variety $V\left( {\bf{A}} \right)$ generated by A is standard. We also show the undecidability of some related properties. In particular, we solve a problem posed by Clark, Davey, Freese, and Jackson.

We accomplish this by combining two results. The first one is Moore’s theorem saying that there is no algorithm which takes as input a finite algebra A of a finite type and decides whether $V\left( {\bf{A}} \right)$ has definable principal subcongruences. The second is our result saying that possessing definable principal subcongruences yields possessing finitely determined syntactic congruences for varieties. The latter property is known to yield standardness.

We prove that the category of boolean inverse monoids is dually equivalent to the category of boolean groupoids. This generalizes the classical Stone duality between boolean algebras and boolean spaces. As an instance of this duality, we show that the boolean inverse monoid Cn associated with the Cuntz groupoid Gn is the strong orthogonal completion of the polycyclic (or Cuntz) monoid Pn. The group of units of Cn is the Thompson group Vn,1.
