This article re-examines the association between democratization and the cost of borrowing abroad in the first era of globalization. Using two representative datasets the literature offers but employing an improved method for panel event study, we find that democratization's impact on the costs of foreign borrowing is uncertain. In one case, the estimated coefficients are similar to the sign and magnitude of the original study but with larger standard errors, rendering the impact statistically insignificant. In the other case, the estimated coefficients hover around zero and are not statistically different from zero.
Parasites are important components of biodiversity and contributors to ecosystem functioning, but are often neglected in ecological studies. Most studies examine model parasite systems or single taxa, thus our understanding of community composition is lacking. Here, the seasonal and annual dynamics of parasites was quantified using a 5-year metabarcoding time-series of freshwater plankton, collected weekly. We first identified parasites in the dataset using literature searches of the taxonomic match and using sequence metadata from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) nucleotide database. In total, 441 amplicon sequence variants (belonging to 18 phyla/clades) were classified as parasites. The four phyla/clades with the highest relative read abundance and richness were Chytridiomycota, Dinoflagellata, Oomycota and Perkinsozoa. Relative read abundance of total parasite taxa, Dinoflagellata and Perkinsozoa significantly varied with season and was highest in summer. Parasite richness varied significantly with season and year, and was generally lowest in spring. Each season had distinct parasite communities, and the difference between summer and winter communities was most pronounced. Combining DNA metabarcoding with searches of the literature and NCBI metadata allowed us to characterize parasite diversity and community dynamics and revealed the extent to which parasites contribute to the diversity of freshwater plankton communities.
Modelling paleo-glacier networks in mountain ranges on the millennial timescales requires ice flow approximations. Hybrid models calculating ice flow by combining vertical shearing (shallow ice approximation) and longitudinal stretching (shallow shelf approximation) have been applied to model paleo-glacier networks on steep terrain, yet their validity has not yet been assessed quantitatively. Moreover, hybrid models consistently yield higher ice thicknesses than Last Glacial Maximum geomorphological reconstructions in the European Alps. Here, we compare results based on the hybrid Parallel Ice Sheet Model (PISM) and the Stokes model Elmer/Ice on the Rhine Glacier, a catchment of the former European Alpine Icefield. For PISM, we also test two magnitudes of flux limitation in a scheme that reduces shearing velocities. We find that the flux limitation typically used in PISM yields significantly reduced shearing speeds and increases ice thicknesses by up to 500 m, partly explaining previous overestimations. However, reducing the ice flux limitation allows the hybrid model to minimize this mismatch and captures sliding speeds, ice thicknesses, ice extent and basal temperatures in close agreement with those obtained with the Stokes model.
An estimated Markov-switching DSGE modeling framework that allows for parameter shifts across regimes is employed to test the hypothesis of regime-dependent credibility of Hong Kong's linked exchange rate system. The baseline model distinguishes two regimes with respect to the time-series properties of the risk premium. Regime-dependent impulse responses to macroeconomic shocks reveal substantial differences in spreads. To test the sensitivity of the results, a number of robustness checks are performed. The findings contribute to efforts at modeling exchange rate regime credibility as a nonlinear process with two distinct regimes.
Cognitive remediation is a promising pathway for ameliorating cognitive impairment of patients with schizophrenia. Here, we investigate predictors of improvement in problem-solving ability for two different types of cognitive remediation – specific problem-solving training and training of basic cognition. For this purpose we conducted a re-analysis of a randomized controlled trial comparing these two training approaches. The main outcome measure was improvement in problem-solving performance. Correlational analyses were used to assess the contribution of clinical, cognitive and training-related predictors. In the problem-solving training group, impaired pre-training planning ability was associated with stronger improvement. In contrast, in the basic cognition training group antipsychotic medication dose emerged as a negative predictor. These results demonstrate that predictors for successful cognitive remediation depend on the specific intervention. Furthermore, our results suggest that at least in the planning domain patients with impaired performance benefit particularly from a specific intervention. (JINS, 2014, 20, 1–6)
The recent increase in Chinese house prices has led to concerns that China is vulnerable to asset price shocks. In this paper, we apply recently developed recursive unit root tests to spot the beginning and the end of potential speculative bubbles in Chinese house price cycles. Overall, we find that except for 2009–10 actual house prices are not significantly disconnected from fundamentals. Thus, the evidence for speculative house price bubbles in China is in general weak.
Homework assignments have been a key component of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for decades, but very few studies examined the effect of compliance on outcome in regard to smoking behaviour. To fill this gap in the existing literature, the present report evaluated the role of homework compliance on short-term outcome in the context of evidence-based care for smoking cessation. Compliance with out-of-session assignments was assessed in a four-session CBT-nicotine replacement therapy protocol for smoking cessation among adult daily smokers (n= 94). Consistent with expectation, homework compliance was associated with better short-term outcomes, including amount of cigarettes consumed as well as abstinence. Importantly, these effects remained after controlling for a wide range of potentially confounding variables (e.g., motivation to quit, nicotine dependence at intake, attendance problems, and in-session participation). Estimates of quantity versus quality of homework compliance did not differentially predict outcomes. Out-of-session homework assignments incrementally predict short-term smoking abstinence in the context of evidence-based care for smoking cessation.
Logging and poaching have dramatically reduced chimpanzee density and distribution in the Republic of Congo. Most chimpanzee translocations attempted in the past failed because a number of biological and non-biological factors can influence success. Biological considerations include knowledge of behaviour, disease, habitat requirements and genetics. We critically review genetic considerations in pre- and post-release phases of translocations and apply them to a welfare-based chimpanzee release project in the Republic of Congo which aimed to re-establish orphan chimpanzees in the wild with a native chimpanzee population. We analyze genetic diversity and relatedness in released animals and devise a genotyping strategy for monitoring of released individuals and their future offspring. Fifty-nine confiscated chimpanzees from different areas of the Republic of Congo were typed for 20 microsatellites using plucked hair as the DNA source. Genetic diversity was high, with an average expected heterozygosity of 81%, and three to 18 alleles per locus. Between 1996 and 1998, 19 individuals were released, and genetic analysis showed that these are unrelated (mean r ± jack-knifed SD = −0.014 ± 0.001). Using FST and population admixture analysis, we identified population structure in wild chimpanzees. For long-term genetic monitoring of released and native chimpanzees, we identified a set of six informative markers, which are easy to score using basic techniques.
