Lithium batteries and beyond. Li batteries have become key for current and future electric vehicles, mobile devices, and grid storage. The articles in this issue of MRS Bulletin address recent progress in systems beyond Li-ion-based ones, which represent possible next-generation batteries for electric vehicles, and new multifunctional materials that can be tailored to provide future electrical energy storage applications. The articles include assessments of battery performance involving complex, interrelated physical, and chemical processes between electrode materials and electrolytes.
